101  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Heatsink Kits for Antminer S1, Has anyone used these? on: March 19, 2014, 11:45:02 PM
Why is everyone buying 1500 RPM max fans and putting them on the rear of ANTMINERs and think they do ANYTHING?     Huh

The fans that come WITH ANTMiners are good for almost 4000 RPM!  I would just trust a datacenter-intended fan any day over this "enthusiast" crap made to OC your i7...

I've just been buying the same model my Avalons had for $8:  (and honestly, if you compare an Avalon "module" to an ANTMiner "module" you can tell where the basic layout came from!)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=201054730658

Not the right power connector but the fan is comparable to the "OEM" ANTMiner fan...

Think about it this way, that Cougar fan is 60CFM.  That fan I linked to is 130CFM.  WANT COOLING?  GAME OVER.

Aussie - have you tried getting a molex to fan adapter and running the ANTMINER fan @ 100%?  If you are having overheating issues, thats one way to fix it!

(and yes, it will be LOUD)

102  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Nearly burned down my home due to mining farm (tips on how to stay safe ) on: March 18, 2014, 07:28:11 PM

IMO properly providing and monitoring clean power with overrated cable is the best way to prevent fires.

I run overclocked AntMiners at 200GH/s (400 MHz) with a 2nd 120mm high volume fan added as an exhaust off of Corsair RM 550W power supplies, the PSU and all power cables remain cool, miners run steadily at 38C (100F) in a room kept around 20C (68F) during winter and around 22C (72F) during summer.

Here is a shot of a external digital display thermometer monitoring 2 AntMiner S1s:

windpath -
Where did you get those temp displays?  How much they run?  Those are sweet!

One thought though - is that the modular 550W Corsair supply that has both PCI-E 6-pins off one cable?  If so I would find a different way to wire it!  (see my 8-pin mobo trick mentioned below)
My policy on ANTS is to have dedicated wires to each module.  I ended up going with Corsair RM650 supplies ($40 refurbs off eBay) as I found the RM550 was only giving me 11.55V and I get 11.8V on all the 650s.
-----------------------------------------------

Good prevention list (even though I didn't quote it) --  Between a buddy and myself we have purchased 5TH of ANTMiner S1s and have a few other ideas to add:

1)  Buy a Voltmeter.  Check the voltage each PSU puts out every now and then.  The first sign of a failing PSU is generally a voltage drop.  Have a supply drop from 11.8V to 11.2?  Take it out of service!  I think 11.6 or 11.7V is the lowest "tested at the ant" voltage I feel comfortable with.  My buddy runs a few with 11.5V just fine.

2)  Buy a Killawatt meter.  Check the draw from the wall.  I had an old SilverStone 1KW supply I had mined for two years on with GPUs (very abused) before I re-purposed it for an ANTMiner.  After two months I noticed the output air was warmer then I remembered.  Because I had tested it before and knew it did @ 420W the wall I was shocked to see it now drawing 450W!  The PSU was dead a week later...

3)  DO THE CIRCUIT MATH!  I wired in some extra 20A breakers and run 4-ANTS per line, but split off to two surge protectors/strips.  So I know I am drawing ~1680W from the outlet (rated 2400W max), but only ~840W through each power strip.  You don't want power strips getting warm and drawing over 1KW constantly on a standard 15A strip is just asking for trouble.  Also a nice trick I learned if you aren't sure what circuits wire where - if you plug in a Killawatt meter and turn on a large load (ie vaccuum, toaster, etc) on the same circuit you will notice a voltage drop.  I.E. I knew I was in trouble when I had 3 ANTS on a circuit and watched the volts drop from 118V to 115V when the wife plugged in a toaster on a rarely used outlet in the kitchen!

4)  PSU Rails on multi-rail PSUs.  How are they wired?  Had another buddy fry a 1KW supply because he didn't realize it had 4 rails - two for all PCI-E conections, one for all molex/SATA, and one for motherboard.  So it really was only a 500W supply on the PCI-E connections!  A voltmeter and the voltage drop concept again can help "map" a PSU's rails even if the manufacturer doesn't list the config.  Note you can also use a motherboard 8-pin as PCI-E 6-pin if you reverse the polarity and use the mobo rail/cable that is wasted on some supplies BUT test everything with the voltmeter for and KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING (ie at your own risk, YMMV, etc)!

4)  Write everything down!  Collect all the data mentioned above, then save it in a spreadsheet or a notebook.  Then when you check on things in a couple weeks or a month you'll notice what changed and start seeing trends...

Other good tips:
Always have an extra PSU or two handy.  N+1
103  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: AntMiner S2 1TH/s Miner (1w/GH/s) on: March 18, 2014, 06:23:49 PM
I've got 10 Ants running right now and it is loud and hot! I think it is worth the premium if the unit is cool and quiet,I don't plan to pre order but once they have equipment ready for purchase I will upgrade for sure.

I know I'm late to the party on this one but if you think ANTMINER S1s are loud/hot, you've never seen an Avalon clone!  Try twice the power use and 100% fans...

... however, 90% draw is pretty intense for 24/7.  I beleive Bitmain is capable of knowing/understanding this so that they either use a quality enermax PSU or actually draw closer to 850W during normal operation.

You guys are funny, debating this PSU thing all day long.  QUALITY of the PSU means everything...  And that Enermax fits the bill.  The plugloadsolutions.com PDF (ie official 80 Gold document) states they tested it @ 100% load, 1112W at the wall (input watts), 74A and the 12V line stayed 12.1V.  That's killer!  Blah blah blah 24/7/365... yeah well I had a 910W Silencer PC Power and Cooling 80+ Silver supply that I put on a 4 module Avalon that pulled 970W @ the wall and ran it that way for over 6 months.  No issues, rock solid setup.  If BitMain ships it with a 1KW supply and you don't like it FINE, then just keep it as a spare - never can have too many PSUs in bitcoin land!
104  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 1 TH/S dragon miner. Has anyone tried it more than 24 hours? on: March 13, 2014, 07:23:00 AM
This 1TH/s miner is using illegal fake A1 Coincraft ASIC based miner produced in China. They are being sold on the black market in China illegally ...

IF YOU PURCHASE THIS MINER THEN YOU ARE PURCHASING COUNTERFEIT HARDWARE ...

*YAWN like that ever stopped anyone in the bitcoin world before...

Oh wait thats what Yifu did to all us Avalon Batch 2/3 guys.  Chips just disappear out the back door and all of a sudden "delays" turn a 100BTC investment into a 60BTC return...  Hate to say it but most likely those chips are the exact same ones as the CoinCraft A1 and the fact that Bitmine.ch has a backlog they are working through when these chips are just available on the market just shows how inept and/or corrupt they are.  Avalon ran 3-4months late, I haven't been keeping track what month of deliveries has Bitmine caught up to now?

Sorry but 1TH should be $2500 by now, my cheap ANTMiners I got in the first 1.45BTC batch make me wish Bitmain would have continued his historical price drop "curve" - heck I wouldn't pay more than what bitmain sells ANTS for these days which is 0.98BTC for a 200GH rig.  So basically $3200 tops but really under $3K I would bite.  Everything else just seems "meh".

106  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] PRIVATE KNC NEPTUNE VERY FIRST BATCH PREORDER on: March 07, 2014, 12:24:03 AM
Just wait until they are shipping.  Demand will be huge.  Just keep telling yourself that.   Roll Eyes

The "problem" for you is 200GH ANTMiner is $750 TODAY.

That means it costs $11K for 3TH of ANTS which will show up now (ie not MONTHS from now like KnC).  Sure KnC will use half the power probably, but date of arrival trumps all other variables in this equation.

Historically the prices paid follow exchange rate and difficulty changes.  If the coin values stay the same, it means prices drop in HALF every month to month an a half.  So if we think KnC will deliver 2 months from now, the "fair market value" would be $2500 for this box then, or that at least is my guess based on the devaluation curve on the current ASICs out there.  (ie ANTMiners went from 4.25BTC>3.15BTC>1.45BTC very rapidly)

107  Economy / Auctions / Re: Cointerra Terraminer "2" TH "February" Batch on: March 06, 2014, 11:04:31 PM
TAKE THE OFFER.

Why?

Well I wish I would have taken the first offer on my Avalon Batch 3 that would have gotten my investment back - as it stood I lost ~40BTC (100BTC invested 60BTC mined)

109  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: 1T bitcoin miner delivered in March 12 priced 5000$ is open for order on: March 04, 2014, 11:56:17 PM
I don't understand the logic in these knockoffs.

1TH in ANTMINERS @ $750/miner (x5) is $3750.

Those are being delivered today.

So this new 1TH box is $5K and thus  $1250 more to save some power and wait longer?Huh

These should be $3.5K today and decrease 20% in cost every two weeks to compete.

I made the mistake of buying a 220GH Avalon Clone with dual 650W supplies that:
A)  Took weeks to ship  (despite "in stock" claims) when BITMAIN was an actual deliver-in-3-days.
B)  Had crap quality control and was a poor design that resulted in a large failure rate of units.  (blow out the PSU every 30 days behavior)

So based on that experience sorry but I am just very skeptical of these knockoff 1TH boxes (especially when they use the same dual-supply design but don't properly isolate each supply from the other).  I can't personally tell which of them are rock solid as advertised and which ones are rejects that already were ran semi-stable for a month but fried some parts and they got it working again by getting it reflowed and replaced enough parts to make it stable "enough" again at a lower clockrate to sell it off to the next sucker...

No way I am risking BTC on this.

Now if you take PAYPAL we can talk...

111  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [GATHERING INTEREST] 1TH/s 28nm 1000W ASIC miner $5250 on: February 24, 2014, 07:40:28 PM
At $5250, I don't know.. At current btc price, you can get an Ant for $4.95/GH including the PSU.  This would be $5.75/GH at $5750 or $5.25/GH at $5,250.  Not really seeing the upside?  Anyone see something that I'm missing?

The upside would be simply the 900W of claimed power use, vs 2400W required for ANTS.

Problem is ANTS are 100% stable.  These Chinese clones "Like-Avalon-BUT-Different-Chips" are hit or miss.  I had bought a 200GH Avalon Clone BTMine box using the whole "2x650W" design and it blew itsself out in less than a couple weeks.  Just garbage...
112  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: WTS Avalon BT MINER blades auction 200 giga hash- no reserve spares/repairs on: February 21, 2014, 10:38:49 PM
Well PAYPAL just finalized my SNAD claim against BTMine.  I can return this POS and get my money back!  At least the BTC it made for the week it DID work will cover shipping it back and the diagnostic fee...  *sigh*  (magic smoke left the box, but PSUs were fine, seller even made me try 3 different PSUs before admitting it might be the power board or control unit go fig...)

Best of luck.  If I had been out of paypal luck I would have probably grabbed this so I had extra parts to play with!
113  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: FS: Rosewill LIGHTNING-1300 1300W Continuous @ 50°C, Intel Hasw on: February 21, 2014, 10:31:44 PM
Wow amazing how prices for these went UP.  All the altcoin craze has inflated PSU prices.

I bought one of these for $170 back in Nov timeframe new off NewEgg.

How much do you want for yours?
114  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: (WTS) CoinTerra 2.0 TH/s Miner on: February 21, 2014, 10:23:38 PM
I have it in hand and currently mining.

It averages 1.5 TH/s on the pool I am on.  Averages over 1.6 in the Cointerra dashboard.

I can get it ready to ship quickly. Asking for somewhere around $12,000 USD cash or BTC equivalent. PM me any offers and we can work out the details.

Thanks!

So ANTMiners do the same 1.6TH for about $7K, are you really stuck on the $12K price?

What Antminers are you buying?  Last I checked they were pulling 200 gh/s overclocked and were $1200.
AntMiners are 1.45BTC so 1.45*8 Ants * 555 *AVG BTC price) = $6438 so it's less than $7K

Yeah its just a hard time to sell stuff with the BTC/USD decrease.  I mean with GOX at $100/BTC it does make you think... maybe $555 isn't as low as things may go  Sad

I just can't take the gamble on a CT unit, even though it would really be a lot of fun.  FWIW those ANTMiners run great on $40 eBay sourced Corsair TX650 PSUs all day long...  I should know I have 3.2TH of them  Wink

We all assume BitMain may have a source for newer 28nm chips (A1 maybe?) and a new miner comming out in the future.

What are the symptoms?  (loose capacitors, failure to power on, Huh)

118  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Has anyone received their KNC Neptune yet? on: February 21, 2014, 10:27:01 AM
Just curious if these have actually shipped out yet.

KnC said 2nd quarter 2014.  That could be 1-April to 30-June.
The norm in this industry is that they would be boxing the first orders on June 30.

No even KnC was a month late of their own planned date.

So more like July 31st   Wink

condolences

For?

Your cointerra's of course... because all the first batch guys got theirs on time right?  Right Guys?  Guys?HuhHuh  *crickets

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=373560.0

By now we know the power draw is only a third less than an ANTMiner farm, and you can get 1.6TH of those for 11BTC since well a couple weeks ago.  By the time your order gets here, I dunno maybe 2BTC?
