101  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: litecoin dead ? on: October 20, 2013, 10:46:48 PM
I feel like I'm preaching to the choir here though, and you already know this... but if that's the case, how can you argue that it's useless?
Because it doesn't provide any compelling reason to use it when Bitcoin exists already.
For example, people can use Google Chrome or Firefox because they are different enough, but there is little market for a copy of them with only a name and logo change.
You can talk all you want about Litecoin isn't different enough, for some it clearly is. Your opinion doesn't make it a fact, my opinion is completely the opposite and for me Litecoin has enough differences to support it. And as the number 2 cryptocurrency with a marketcap of $ 43,062,060, I'm clearly not the only one.

Your argument is also pretty flawed, lots of people use Chromium and Iceweasel.  Cheesy

I remember people saying the exact same thing about Bitcoin when it went from $33 down to $1.9X. "Bitcoin is dead" ROFL.

Don't mistake "dead" from a buying opportunity.
+1

Still remember all the "Bitcoin is dead" threads, Litecoin follows pretty much the same path as Bitcoin with a 2 year delay.  Smiley
103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Bitcoin really any different? Not in the long run. on: October 20, 2013, 03:50:09 PM
If they print more euro's the amount of dollars isn't increasing.
So more cryptocurrencies doesn't mean more bitcoins, I can't send my Litecoins to my Bitcoin wallet.  Wink

Everyone seems to be pretty negative about this, I honestly think it'll make a very interesting movie; can't wait! Hopefully it goes through.
A guy behind a computer scripting and messaging, yeah that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

- Windows 7 and Mac OSX thanks to Adobe Angry
- Android

And tried out a lot of Linux distro's but Ubuntu stays my favorite.
I'll even confess, I like Unity Embarrassed

Worst OS I ever used: Windows 8
Wtf were they thinking? Huh
109  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Secure email services?? on: October 17, 2013, 09:07:16 PM
I did some research after my government decided that the providers have one year the time to change their infrastructure so they can log following things:
- which websites you visit
- when you visit them
- who you mailed
- when you mailed
- from who you got a mail
- which hardware you used
- where you used it (when you get a call on your mobile phone, they will log the location)
- who you called
- who called you
- length of the conversation
- they log calls from landlines, mobile phones and services like skype

All these logs can be viewed by the government, police, even the institute for post and telecommunication,...  Undecided
And they work together with the NSA, so I guess they will happily share everything with them too.

So in my search for a good mail provider I ended up with these 2:
www.countermail.com
riseup.net

The first one you can pay with bitcoins, and the second one accepts Bitcoin donations.

But like some pointed out, you can't be 100% sure that your privacy is safe.  Sad
But imo better try than just give it to them.

Belgium is nowhere near split in half and it is extremely unlikely to become so in the future, regardless of popular demagogues' antics.

40,6% of the people in Flanders voted on a political party that wants to split the country, be it NV-A or VB.
And I fear that the NV-A will get a lot more votes in 2014, besides "byebye more freedom" that also means a step closer to "byebye Belgium".  Undecided

And bitcoin is barely used for anything other then trading for USD (or other fiat).

A lot of people are buying stuff with bitcoin (as I am). Bitcoin is probably being used more than you think

But why people will start using any altcoins if they can already use bitcoin for the same purposes?
Why did people use Facebook when they had Myspace? Huh

Not that I think Bitcoin will get thrown of the throne soon, I can't see any alt coin doing that at the moment (but never say never). But I wont say, there won't come an altcoin in the future that will.

Imagine an altcoin with the same features as Bitcoin, but with instant transactions and no need to waist electricity on mining them (or uses the electricity for something really useful). Still sure people would prefer Bitcoin?
112  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: LTC in MtGOX in less than 24h ???? on: October 10, 2013, 02:02:56 PM
So let's say for a moment that all your dreams come true...LTC is added to Gox...LTC price shoots up, and you sell for tons of USD on Gox...

THEN WHAT?  It will just be trapped there with all the other USD I can look at but can't touch.
That's the genius about the whole thing, they sell it high, to discover they can't get their funds out, which means buy back even higher. It's gonna be a rocket, I tell you.  Tongue

All joking aside, I'm happy if it gets on Gox because it will get some extra attention and hopefully a few extra merchants pick it up. It's nice advertising, wouldn't use Gox to buy or sell ltc anyway at the moment.
113  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: LTC in MtGOX in less than 24h ???? on: October 10, 2013, 01:26:44 PM
I hope you are right, nice birthday gift for Litecoins 2 years anniversary.  Grin

...but I stay skeptic, we're still talking about mtgox.  Undecided

116  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should miners collude to steal funds from wallet confiscated by US government? on: October 09, 2013, 10:44:29 PM
Something in me screams "YEAH, take them!"

...but it wouldn't be a smart move. Wouldn't hurt the US government, but it would hurt Bitcoin.

Absurdly Lucky  Undecided

I expected something like "I found a wallet on my HDD from a few years ago with 5000BTC on it"

But have fun with your 1BTC and throwing away your next paycheck  Tongue

Of course they want their stats back and their old username, it shows you are trustworthy to new customers and you don't loose your old customers because they know you.  Undecided

Except that it's chasing short-term profit at the expense of security.  If you're a decent vendor, you can afford to sit it out for a few months while you see where the chips fall.  You can afford to take a few months to establish a reputation under a new online identity which cannot be connected to your old SR account (remember that they've used feedback to estimate the quantity of drugs sold by the guys arrested in the UK) which was located on a system which seems to have been nowhere near as secure as people believed.

The smartest thing for any large vendor to do right now is assume that everything they ever did through SR (including any encrypted PM's) is known to law enforcement and act accordingly. They need to assume that stuff which shouldn't have been kept on the SR system was and that at least some of their users kept information which shouldn't have been kept.

They also need to assume that a new marketplace which has been thrown together in a week is not going to be totally secure and neither are its forums.  If the new site/forums leak information because they've been thrown together in a hurry, that information could provide missing links which law enforcement currently doesn't have.
ok, you got a point.
119  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you see Silk Road's closure as a positive or negative? on: October 08, 2013, 11:52:57 PM
negative

Closing silk road won't stop black markets selling drugs for bitcoins, so if someone wants to link it with drugs, they will always find an example, a non-argument imo to think this is positive.
Furthermore I think all drugs should be legal, it's nobody's right to tell another person what he can use or can't use. And I actually don't sell drugs or use any besides from time to time the legal ones (alcohol, tobacco and weed). So even if it isn't useful for me, it is for others and thanks to silk road's rating system, people knew that they had something good. And not some garbage that could kill them from a shady dealer on the street.
120  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am scared by the thought! on: October 08, 2013, 11:37:22 PM
The extent to which the whole thing turned into an extension of his ego has got to be one of the biggest mistakes he made, he wanted (or claimed) to encourage the same idealism in the Silk Road fan club, but it's not the most pragmatic MO for the setup he was running. Especially considering his real life identity was a near clone of the supposedly fictional DPR, and worse still that the Ross Ulbrecht online presence reflected this too. You can end up a martyr at best with that kind of practice. I wonder whether he'll practice what he preached when it comes to handling his case.

It's not just him.  Vendors are using their old usernames at the new sites.  Some of them want their old statistics to carry over to SR 2.

Think about that for a moment.  You're a vendor that right now law enforcement might not have enough information to charge.  You can simply "disappear" as if your old on-line identity had never existed and establish a new, unconnected identity down the track.  But instead of doing that, they want to start selling to their old customers as soon as possible, with as much fanfare as possible.  You don't need to crack Tor or Bitcon when people are so supremely stupid.
Of course they want their stats back and their old username, it shows you are trustworthy to new customers and you don't loose your old customers because they know you.  Undecided
