101  Other / Off-topic / Re: Merit System Upgrade on: November 23, 2018, 06:31:40 AM
The best thing would be to get rid of signature campaigns. They should be made illegal on this board. That's the problem right there; 95% of posts by sig whores are absolute fucking NPC-tier rubbish, zero contribution whatsoever; if there's an intelligent and original comment, it always disappears covered by mountains of rubbish.

That's the one and only solution to make bitcointalk great again; Merit is just a palliative with severe drawbacks.

But that’s how the forum makes its money.

you guys share same thought ......?

I sort of agree. I think there’s too much institutional money in bitcoin for them to let it crash hard.

I wish you guys would stop posting about your bad financial decisions in the white nationalist observer thread.

Did mommy and daddy not give you enough attention when you were a baby?

So, does anybody know why adamstgBit left?

Let me guess, he pulled a DeathandTaxes, MnW or cypherdoc type scam and left?  That’s usually how the old guard chooses to leave.
Who is MnW?
DeathandTaxes' scam thoroughly disappointed me.  He was such an insightful guy, one of the smartest and most knowledgeable posters around imho.  I thought he came across as a standup guy, but clearly my judgement of him was very flawed.

Matthew N Wright - made a bet with half of the forum for a shitload of money because he was duped by Trendon Shavers into causing a distraction from the fact his Ponzi was about to fail. He may have been paid to do it but we’ll never know for sure. He wasn’t banned for that but because he constantly kept calling theymos out over various shit.

DeathandTaxes was the real mystery. Highly respected knowledgeable member that decided he didn’t want to be here anymore so he ripped people off and left. You’re judgment of him wasn’t wrong. He was a standup guy for a long time - until he wasn’t. That’s why “trust” systems don’t work. It’s very possible to build up trust for a couple of years, get a bunch of deals in place and run with the money.

Same with Tradefortress, made a big deal over calling out scammers and trying very hard at building up trust with people.
He started an investment site, where people could invest in Bitcoin startups, but then he did a runner with 3.5K coins.

The lure of easy money has a very strong appeal.

107  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It Takes 9343$ to mine one bitcoin, so no way i am selling it below 12000$ on: November 21, 2018, 06:23:46 PM
You don’t understand mining. You don’t mine based on today’s ROI. You are mining for a future return.

I started mining bitcoin when they were relatively worthless with very electrically piggy failure prone desktop computer equipment. I believed bitcoin would be valuable someday even if the only thing they were ever used for was dark web purchases.

Mining is a costly enterprise. There are only three reasons to mine, faith in future value, support the ideology, nefarious purposes (attack). Instant ROI isn’t one of them.

109  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it Game Over for Bitcoin? on: November 21, 2018, 05:33:43 PM
Prices have been on a constant decline ever since this year began. There's been FUD all over the place, and governments have been cracking down on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. In addition, there have been several hacks which have also contributed to the decline in the value of the whole cryptocurrency market. As such, many people have lost their faith in Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general, as they've lost a lot of money.

Despite this, it seems that most holders would not give up on Bitcoin no matter what. But, if Bitcoin keeps declining in value until it becomes worthless, then long-time holders (like me) would become disillusioned. For those who want to protect their investment, there's the option to sell Bitcoin into USD or exchange it towards a stablecoin like Tether. However, even Tether has lost its peg (although in some occasions it heads back to $1) sometime this year, which means that not even stablecoins can be trusted.

Nonetheless, what are your thoughts about this? Will it be Game Over for Bitcoin? Or will everything go back to normal soon? Huh

You made a bunch of statements about what you see then you ask what people think.

My thoughts are: most of your observations are wrong, big money investors would never let this game die, and bitcoin does not have a “normal”.

I think he got increasingly big blocky and increasingly drunk so went off for pastures new. I don't think there was anything nefarious.

Oh, that’s good then. At least someone decided to refrain from ripping people off before they leave. Thanks for the drama update.

Edit: I assume Chartbuddy went with him?

Not quite. Richy_T left for The Forum That Shall Be Named about the same time frame, and for about the same reasons that adam did. ChartBuddy left with Richy_T.

They ran off to the same forum together. Got it, thanks.

You do realise that is all idealistic bullshit.

There is just a new set of elite at the top and the manipulation and bullshit is the same as it ever was enriching the 1%

Getting bitcoin into the hands of the 1% easiest is to create a specific avenue for only the 1% to buy large quantities...

oh but...the bitcoin price! How great it will be!

It’s a pleasure to see that you’re not an idealist. You’re just greedy like the rest of us.

It's a shithole out there man.  A cesspool of sig campaigning google translate feces.
Stay in this thread.  It is the only reliably decent place on the forum.
I absolutely agree with you 100%.
The funny thing is they tried to lock this thread. All the shit out there on the forum with shilling and broken sentences and this was the thread they tried to stop.  Roll Eyes
Who tried?
some moderator got tired of the complaints, so locked it. the original op had fucked off, so wasn't modding it.
theymos (may Cthulhu save and protec him) let us pick a new op (mCsaph), relaxed the rules and unlocked it.

Thanks for that. I’ve been wondering for a long time why adamstgBit wasn’t the OP anymore. adamstgBit started the original form of this thread “MtGox Wall Observer” just a few days before I came here as my first incarnation (CornedBeefHash).

JJG doesn’t write posts. He sits and yells into a text to speech microphone. No one would ever type that much without being forced (like in school).

I write every single one of my posts.

One thing, so far, is that i have not been accused of plagerism... hahahahahahaha.. because almost every little word that I type flows through my fingertips.... believe it or not?

Hey QA... since I got you on the line.. I seem to recall that I was pissed off at you for a certain amount of time around December 2015 because you were bragging in the thread and proclaiming to sell a decently large stash of your BTC for christmas shopping.. something like that.. so I recall that presentation from you as being an irritating set of interactions and circumstances because it seemed to be a kind of rubbing in, and even encouraging BTC sales at an inopportune time.  Like gloating.   Tongue Tongue

Am I remembering correctly or was that a different year or perhaps a different forum member?  Could have been 2014 or even 2016.. but for some reason I seem to recall the situation as 2015.

Jay, everything seems to irritate you, so I’m sure I irritated you. LOL

You are probably reading too much into the matter becuase I don't tend to hold grudges, especially with actual humans who can deal with relatively provocative engagements and differing opinions - that do not necessarily devolve into personal attacks.  I even tend to forgive those who engage in personal attacks, though I might reciprocate a bit before letting the matter go.

I did buy that boat I told you about.

O.k... so when was the boat? Was that December 2014?  December 2015?  December 2016?    or some other date?

That could have been the incident to which I am remembering.. because I seem to recall that there were a few folks (and you might have been one of them) who were gloating over their BTC profits, and really was not a good time to be selling BTC or encouraging others to sell.  It's almost like a kind of trolling - even though it might make some sense on a personal level.

Of course, if your cost basis for the BTC is really low, then you could still end up doing quite well on a personal level, even though the timing was not so great overall and even not really good timing for many others who might be considering what to do regarding their own BTC allocation(s)/investment.

It’s beautiful BTW. I took it out on Tahoe in August for a week. I looks like I’m gonna get back all my btc too if the current trend continues.

I have my doubts about how much anyone could really count on further downward BTC movement from here, but of course, the odds for downward BTC movement from here seems to be greater than it was a few weeks ago.. Yet, on the other hand, the level of our current BTC price correction, might also leave a BTC price situation that is just too oversold.. and there could end up being a decently sized upwards movement from here that causes the bottom to already be in... and no more down is really feasible.. even though it appears that down is coming?  It seems that we will see something in the coming week, especially with a decent amount of trade volume, it is usually more difficult for the price to stay in the same spot, but you never know.

I agree with that, you’re pretty well balanced and debate well.  I’m just too lazy to read everything you post. As far as talking about things that you buy with BTC that’s a great motivator for people to get into bitcoin. If you can’t use your bitcoin to buy something nice what are we doing with it? Reminds me of an old American cartoon called Scrooge McDuck?  Only ever did was sit around and count his money, he wouldn’t spend it.  What kind of stupid shit is that.

I hope you’re right and it doesn’t drop anymore.  I’m perfectly fine with buying right now and selling at $20,000. I don’t want a Lamborghini but a nice big house on Tahoe would be OK.

Edit: HaHa I was doing what I accused Jay of doing and driving and using text to speech so I had to edit.

I had high hopes for the merit system at first. I really thought it could bring back some of the people that used to be here. Or at least the same type of people. Then as I was looking at the people asking for merit or at least trying to post decently I realized this forum is for non English speaking altcoiners now. I couldn’t give a shit about altcoins. I’ve essentially given up on this ever being a bitcoin forum again.

Woah!

So atleast it sounds like QA change his tune? I'm guessing?

This market is so painful btw.

No.  I think that he is largely the same... which means that it is likely that his account has not been SODLed nor compromised... hahahahaha

I can still read such variations of quasi-subdued gloating in his posts that leaks out of the post seams, every once in a while.. .. at least attempting to read the overall contents and tone...

Nonetheless, I do have to say that I did appreciate some of his relatively recent efforts to screen bitcoin maximalists, and to send smerits to largely bitcoin maximalists rather than shit coin pumpers, but I think that he had given up on that angle as long as he could figure out other means of contribution.. I suppose that he could probably elaborate, if he were to conclude that such topic were worthy of any response from his highness.  hahahahahhaha

You may have a point - he didn't even give me smerit for the post which he 'agreed' being underrated

I don't know if I am making the same point as you, but I thought that if a forum member is going to publicize some smerit distribution plan, that it would be good for the member to set forth some criteria, and I actually appreciated that initially the criteria that QA set forth, at least initially, was mostly a kind of bitcoin maximalism preference.

On the other hand, even though I saw a lot of members set up threads in which they could set forth smerit distribution criteria (not referring specifically to QA), I did not really consider that setting up such smerit distribution threads to be a fair method to distribute smerit or extra smerits - because I would think that such a set up seems to encourage a kind of self-promotional merit begging.. at least that was something that I considered to be a problematic dynamic, yet surely such practice of setting up such smerit distribution threads was not considered against any forum rules and surely giving smerits has a lot of subjectivity, even for merit sources.

I guess part of the point that I am attempting to make is that the subjectivity aspect of smerit distribution might cause a considerable amount of variance, including just lucky or unlucky timing.

I had high hopes for the merit system at first. I really thought it could bring back some of the people that used to be here. Or at least the same type of people. I wonder if you HODL because you believe the price will go up? Or are you lost too much already so you don't see any reason to sell because you won't be satisfied with the money you will cash out?
I have this self-conflict for a few months already

Both of the reason you mentioned are true. To me, I still believe in the price of bitcoin and I also don't want to lose money anymore.

You decided to sell all your coin today?
