101  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-07-02] Former Chinese Giant BTCC Relaunches Cryptocurrency Exchange on: July 02, 2018, 11:34:29 AM
After shuttering its doors nine months ago, the world’s oldest cryptocurrency exchange is relaunching its exchange platform for business and has revealed its plan to launch its own token in the future.

BTCC on Monday announced the launch of its revamped exchange with support for crypto-to-fiat and crypto-only trading pairs including bitcoin, bitcoin cash, litecoin and ethereum.  BTCC, formerly BTC China, was the world’s first cryptocurrency exchange to launch operations n 2011. However, a crackdown by Chinese authorities on the domestic cryptocurrency sector, followed by an ICO ban, resulted in BTCC closing down its doors in September 2017.

BTCC was formerly one of China’s original ‘big three’ exchanges but eventually moved its operations to Hong Kong and London before being bought out by a Hong Kong blockchain investment fund in January 2018.

Speaking to CCN, Vice President BTCC Exchange Aaron Choi said that the relaunch of BTCC would feature a system to reward clients with points that would eventually be fully converted to BTCC tokens.

He stated:

Quote
“A soft launch has already been made and we decided to go ahead with the BTCC points system that will be fully convertible to BTCC tokens. We wanted to give something back to the community which has supported us through a rather difficult period. Initially, we started trading with just Bitcoin/USD pairs and eventually added Ethereum, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash. We will be adding further coins according to what our customers tell us although these will probably be Top 10 anyway”.

Some of the features of the new BTCC Exchange include new trading pairs (BTC, ETH, BCH, LTC/USD, ETH, BCH, LTC/BTC, etc.), enhanced liquidity as well as supposedly quicker deposits and withdrawals. Tighter bid-offer spreads are also being offered to enhance the trading experience.

In addition to the new trading pairs, BTCC will regularly launch additional trading pairs based on user feedback. All reward points are fully convertible to BTCC tokens upon release, which will be tradeable on the exchange.  BTCC has not revealed a concrete timeline for its token issuance.

No new fresh exchanges were added, still Coss.io and BTC aplha are the main one. According to Coss.io trading history a large amount of MRK in batches of 1.5 BTC each, were sold few days ago. But i was there, unsuccessfully trying to sold few MRK on that price. There were no huge purchasing applications, i think at that time volume was artificially inflated. We need more trustful trading platforms like Bittrex or Binance.
103  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-07-01] EU Report Says Cryptocur 'Unlikely' to Challenge Central Banks on: July 02, 2018, 06:05:17 AM
Cryptocurrencies will not challenge the economic power of central banks, the European Parliament said last week.

In the latest Monetary Dialogue report issued on June 26, the European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs said that while cryptocurrencies have made financial transactions "relatively safe, transparent, and fast," they pose no threat to sovereign currencies around the world.

The analysis, which was conducted by the Center for Social and Economic Research, a non-profit research institute based in Warsaw, first recognized the positive changes cryptocurrencies have brought to financial transactions, noting that they now "are used globally, disregarding national borders."

Cryptocurrencies "respond to real market demand," the analysis claimed, and they will have the potential to become a "full-fledged private money" or even a permanent element to the global economy.

However, the researchers said it is "unlikely" cryptocurrencies will threaten central banks and sovereign currencies and dismantle the existing monetary structures, especially in countries where their sovereign currencies are widely circulated.

At present, according to the analysis, the total value of all cryptocurrencies circulating in the market heavily underweigh the value of major sovereign currencies in circulation.

But a few exceptions exist. The report cited runaway inflation in Venezuela and noted that in much smaller monetary jurisdictions, cryptocurrencies "may" offer alternative to unstable currency.

In addition, the analysis suggested that financial regulators should treat cryptocurrencies as "any other financial transactions or instruments," given the potential risks associated with transactions using cryptocurrencies, including money laundering, tax evasion, and financing illicit activities.

104  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-06-29] Polish Bitcoin Association Challenges Banks Over Crypto Account Ref on: June 30, 2018, 08:27:09 AM
An industry group in Poland is attempting to challenge banks that are allegedly refusing to provide services for firms associated with cryptocurrencies.

The Polish Bitcoin Association (PBS) has appealed to the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (OCCP), requesting that the antitrust authority start investigating the alleged restriction of competition. It filed a letter with the OCCP on June 26, the industry group announced.

A memo seen by Finance Magnates reportedly shows the PBS has criticized 15 financial institutions for denying 52 entities' bank account applications and closing bank accounts of 25 entities.

MBank, the nation's fourth-largest banking group in terms of assets and loans, allegedly made nine refusals and closed three accounts, according to the complaint.

It's not yet clear whether the OCCP has agreed to look into the case.

Although Poland has made previous attempts to regulate the local cryptocurrency industry, it hasn't officially established rules around cryptocurrency exchanges, except for a draft law against criminal activities like money laundering.

The country's Financial Ombudsman, Aleksandra Wiktorow, called on the country's Ministry of Finance to regulate the local cryptocurrency industry early last year, but she said at the time that any regulation "should not be excessive," as CoinDesk reported.

105  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-06-29] Banking Ban Reversal? India to Finalize Cryptocurrency Regulations on: June 29, 2018, 11:49:26 AM
The head of the Indian government committee tasked to propose a regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency sector has revealed authorities are close to finalizing a draft in July.

Nearly three months after the Reserve Bank of India, the country’s central bank, introduced a banking freeze on the cryptocurrency sector to adversely impact trading volumes, exchanges and investors have remained hopeful of legislation that regulates – in effect recognizes and legalizes – the industry.

Earlier this month, we reported that the Indian government committee responsible for overseeing and proposing a regulatory framework wasn’t in favor of a blanket ban of the cryptocurrency sector.

In a televised interview with India’s biggest financial news channel, the head of that government committee and the secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs Subash Chandra Garg confirmed that the authority is in the final stage of finalizing the regulatory draft framework for the cryptocurrency sector.

He stated:

`We are fairly close to developing a template [for crypto regulations] that we think is in the best interests of the country. We have prepared a draft which we intend to discuss with the committee members in the first week of July.”

First established in early 2017, the inter-governmental committee was expected to bring some clarity to the longstanding legal ambiguity of cryptocurrencies in the country. What followed has been anything but, with government ministries, the central bank, domestic banks and even the country’s finance minister weighing in with varying statements on cryptocurrencies.

Still, Garg insisted that the committee – which originally had three months to submit a report a year ago – had made significant progress in developing a draft framework which is now expected in July.

He added:

Quote
“We’ve actually moved quite a lot [in drafting regulations] in that, what part of the [crypto] business should be banned, what should be preserved and what not. That kind of detailed work has happened. Now should be in a position to wrap this up in the first fortnight of July.”

114  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-06-14] Ban U-Turn? Indian Govt. Panel Suggests Cryptocurrency Regulation on: June 14, 2018, 12:44:19 PM
An Indian government panel reportedly tasked to look into cryptocurrency policy isn’t in favor of a sweeping ban akin to the recent banking blockade enforced by the country’s central bank.

Citing sources, India’s biggest business news TV channel and financial daily Economic Times is reporting that an Indian government panel tasked to ‘look into cryptocurrency’ isn’t in favor of a blanket ban in the country.

Instead, the panel will recommend allowing cryptocurrency trading with ‘riders’ or guidelines in the form of regulation.

While the report is yet to be substantiated, the Indian government has previously established an interdisciplinary committee in 2017 to examine and recommend a framework for the domestic cryptocurrency sector. Led by the Ministry of Finance, the committee comprises of a number of government ministries and other authorities including the central bank.

If the report is true, any legislative move to regulate the nascent but growing cryptocurrency sector will bring relief to adopters and businesses who have felt the brunt of a banking blockade enforced by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India’s central bank, in April. The controversial, sweeping policy move has seen the RBI forbid all regulated financial institutions including banks from providing services to cryptocurrency businesses.

Domestic industry news resource Crypto Kanoon added:
Quote
In view of the news (though unverified) from various sources, we strongly feel that there is every likelihood that Government will regulate Crypto soon. In fact it's never showed hostility towards Crypto. It just slowed down the market in order to minimise the risk of consumers.

Just this week, the RBI admitted to not conducting any research nor consulting any government panel prior to enforcing the ban in what is increasingly appearing to be an arbitrary decision taken to dent the heightened growth of the cryptocurrency industry.

As the country’s financial regulator and authority, the RBI has notably shirked away from its responsibility of developing or researching regulatory guidelines for the domestic crypto sector.

115  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-06-14] Positive Bitcoin Price Momentum in Late 2018 Is Still Very Much Pos on: June 14, 2018, 10:00:45 AM
The Bitcoin price is not in a good place right now. That situation will not change anytime soon. When looking at the long-term picture, however, a lot of things may change in the coming months. It has become easy to overlook the positive developments happening in the Bitcoin world today.

The Bitcoin Price is Part of the Story

As is usually the case when people discuss Bitcoin, the price takes center stage. That is only normal, as it is the go-to metric for the world’s leading cryptocurrency. Even so, the price only tells a small part of how the Bitcoin ecosystem evolves at any given time. Additionally, the Bitcoin price has become very easy to manipulate, effectively triggering an official manipulation investigation.

With the Bitcoin price losing so much value in 2018, the situation looks dire. Compared to January 2018, the value has dropped by nearly 50%. For short-term investors and speculators, it is the worst possible outcome. Everyone else, however, is seemingly less bothered by the short-term changes. The Binance CEO even stated how this is a temporary trend which seems to occur every year.

Moreover, various experts shared interesting Bitcoin price predictions. Some even go as far as claiming how one BTC will hit $15,000 again later this year. While not impossible, it seems to be somewhat unlikely at this point. With all of the negative momentum, chances of a Bitcoin price increase become less likely every single day. Nothing is impossible in the cryptocurrency world, as stranger things have happened over the years.

Looking Ahead with Positive News

Other than the Bitcoin price, various developments are taking place as well. Bitcoin is set to receive a fair few technical updates in the months to come. Transaction fees are already on the decline, and future scaling solutions will help improve things accordingly. When the Lightning Network will effectively gain global traction, has yet to be determined at this stage.

Furthermore, merchant adoption of Bitcoin as a payment method is also seemingly on the rise. That in itself has been a pressing problem for the world’s leading cryptocurrency. If things can pick up the pace in this regard, there will be a growing focus on paying with cryptocurrencies, rather than investing in them. Such a mindshift will be more than welcome as far as Bitcoin is concerned.

There is also the growing regulatory focus on Bitcoin. Whereas once assumed to be a necessary evil, more people now see the merit of actively regulating Bitcoin. It offers more legitimacy to the cryptocurrency space and may help attract institutional investors. All of these changes combined will eventually impact the Bitcoin price in a positive manner. Last but not least, major trading platforms are venturing  into cryptocurrency. That list includes Nasdaq, ICE, ad, and several other key players.

118  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-06-13] Spot.IM Asks Israeli Authorities Permission to Pay Salaries in BTC on: June 13, 2018, 11:32:49 AM
The Israeli high-tech sector is currently undergoing a severe talent squeeze, with companies having to compete over employees with higher salaries, stock options and better perks. One such company might have found a new way to attract and retain tech-savvy staff in this environment: offer to pay salaries in bitcoin. Now it only remains to be seen if the country’s authorities will permit the plan.

Spot.IM Wants to Pay Bitcoin Salaries

An Internet company with offices in Tel Aviv, Spot.IM, is in negotiations with the Israel Securities Authority (ISA). The talks are said to be primarily about the appropriate exchange rate, a critical issue for making this work, and it is expected that the sides will reach some agreements over the next month or so, which will allow the plan to go forward. The company has also brought the matter to the attention of the Labor Ministry, which says its officials are looking into the subject. The plan is that any employee that wishes it can accept the total or a portion of his paycheck in bitcoin, with the company absorbing the costs of the high shekel conversion fees.

Spot.IM is not part of the cryptocurrency ecosystem but of the established Internet industry. It helps media website manage their social engagement and comments section, and among its clients it lists Time Magazine, NBC, Huffington Post, Engadget, Fox News and other big names. The company has raised a total of about $38 million since it was founded in 2012, and its latest round in November 2017 brought in $25 million in Series C funding from Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich and other venture capitalists.

120  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [2018-06-12] Lithuania Unveils Detailed Cryptocurrency and ICO Guidelines on: June 12, 2018, 08:50:28 AM
Lithuania’s Ministry of Finance has published comprehensive guidelines for cryptocurrency and initial coin offerings, covering four areas including regulations, accounting, and taxation.

Ministry of Finance’s Guidelines

The Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania has published guidelines for cryptocurrency and initial coin offerings (ICOs). They are divided into four areas – regulation, taxation, accounting, and Anti-Money Laundering/ Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT).

Although the guideline document is entitled “ICO Guidelines,” three of the four sections focus on cryptocurrency.

The Lithuanian Minister of Finance, Vilius Šapoka, clarified that the guidelines “describe only part of the aspects examined by relevant institutions, in case of discrepancy between guidelines and positions of institutions, the latter shall prevail,” adding:

Quote
We acknowledge that the brave new crypto economy world is here to stay, this is why we encourage and invite its participants to innovate and create in Lithuania.

ICO Regulation

“Organizing ICO is not regulated by specific legislation,” the finance ministry explains in the Regulatory section, adding that “taking into account different ICO models and different characteristics of tokens, in some cases, such activity may be subject to the requirements of the legislation of the Republic of Lithuania and supervision of the Bank of Lithuania.”

Furthermore, the ministry notes that “If funds collected during ICO are intended for the formation of the capital of a newly established FMP [Financial Market Participants] – the capital formation requirements applicable to a specific form of financial institution shall apply.”

Šapoka commented:

Quote
We are one of the first ones in Europe who prepared comprehensive guidelines on the legal framework for ICO projects covering regulatory as well as taxation and accounting.
