101  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 31, 2018, 09:22:30 AM
This is reminding me of the $800 phase in early 2014. I'd prefer a violent plunge to rip everyone's baby blue panties to shreds and then we can get down to business.

It reminds me of the period between April 2013 and August/September 2013 where the price wobbled around the $100 mark (+/- 20$)

The price fell from $260 to $50.. then jumped around like crazy for a week or so.... then stabilised around $100 for several months.

There must be more than 100 times the Bitcoiners there were 5 years ago, so I have a feeling $10000 is the new $100 and probably a very good buying opportunity.

Another bad news. Sad

Fortunately not Bitcoin. It was XRP and NEM.

Why all filthy rich guys are selling hundreds and thousands of BTC at that price? What are they thinking - the end of the world? Or early retirement? What if by the end of the year BTC hits 50K or even 100K $ and they realize how richer they could have been if only waited for several more months? But no, why have 100 mln in several months, while I can have 2-3 mln and retire now. Pathetic  Grin Grin Grin

I don’t think this has anything to do with direct profit and cashing out. Some players would prefer Bitcoin to go away (ie. banks, tptb etc..) as such, they want to cause maximum FUD to keep the vast majority of the public away.... and burn the newcomers so they panic sell and stay away after losing their shirts.

They know they can’t do it indefinitely, but they can postpone Bitcoin from rising and becoming super popular  temporarily... which is good enough for them.

The genuine Bitcoiners can’t be shaken by these distractions and probably aren’t cashing out more than spending money at these prices.

I now understand where my initial 100 points and 6 sMerits came from. The 100 was based on the minimum level to achieve my current rank (full member) . The sMerits are based on my 5 year membership and low post count in the last 12 months.

- to rank up to senior I need 240 activity and 250 merits.

I imagine there are some Hero members here who Were just a few posts away from Legendary who now find they need to find 500 merits to rank up. Ouch! So.. show some love to your poor Hero members who add quality to the forum. (Sorry..  Roach, this doesn’t include you.)

In addition to activity, everyone now has a merit score, and you need both a certain activity level and a certain merit score in order to reach higher member ranks. The required scores are:

RankRequired activityRequired merit
Brand new00
Newbie10
Jr Member300
Member6010
Full Member120100
Sr. Member240250
Hero Member480500
LegendaryRandom in the range 775-10301000

You get merit points when someone sends you some for one of your posts. Additionally, when someone sends you merit points, half of those points can be sent by you to other people.

Certain users are designated as "merit sources". They can create new merit out of nothing, up to a limited number per month (which differs per source). I will not be posting a definitive list of merit sources (so that people don't bug them too much), though you'll soon figure out who they are if you pay attention.

There is currently no such thing as a "demerit". I'm hoping that the positive merits alone will be fine. I could add demerits pretty easily later on if necessary, though.

I'm hoping that this system will increase post quality by:
 - Forcing people to post high-quality stuff in order to rank up. If you just post garbage, you will never get even 1 merit point, and you will therefore never be able to put links in your signature, etc.
 - Highlighting good posts with the "Merited by" line.

While we will not be directly moderating this, I encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality, not just posts that you agree with.

Do not beg for merit excessively.

The forum ranking system is a bit complicated now... It'd be nice if someone made an infographic explaining activity and merit.

If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

I am especially eager to have merit sources in sub-communities such as the local sections.

Trivia:

For current members, your initial merit score is equal to the minimum required to your rank. Of that, a certain amount (less than the usual half) is spendable. The spendable amount was calculated based on your current rank and the number of activity points you earned in the last year. A Legendary member who hasn't posted in the last year would still be Legendary, but would not have any spendable merit.

If someone sends you 1 merit, the 0.5 sMerit is not wasted; it is just not shown until you get another merit point.

There are stats here, and you can find someone's merit summary by clicking the "merit" link on their profile.

On a different.. wall observing kinda note, the UK annual self assessment tax MUST be paid by January 31st. I’m sure many people that spent well in 2017 (knowing they had massive BTC profits to fall back on) didn’t really plan ahead so needed to cash out a few Bitcoins to pay their tax bill... I’m one of these people. I cashed out at £10600 (approx $14k) but I’m sure others have been holding to the last minute hoping.... it goes a bit higher than now...

31st Jan payment deadline is for tax year 16-17, so CGT on sales before last April

Edit: so your tax is due Jan 2019. No rush.

This wasn’t my Capital Gains. This was just the tax on my self employment that I frivolously spent on hookers and blow rather than saving for my tax bill. I have CGT to look forward to next year.

this is horrible

this is going to turn us all into merit whores

I wish I could help. I just tested my spendable merit... and now I have zero Sad

Thank you all for the generous donations of sMerit. I started with 100 merit and 6 sMerit (which I consumed immediately) - I’m not sure what the initial 100 merit /6 sMerit formula is based on as other ‘members’ seem to have arbitrary amounts between 0 and several thousand.. Your very kind donations added 9 new Merit points and gave me 4 new spendable sMerits.

Cheers.

Edit: I just found out how to find out who my Meritors are by clicking on Merit in my profile. Thanks Dabs, Yefi, Rosewater, Hairy, vanobe and Jay. Much appreciated! Grin

I have 100 merit and 1 Smerit. Does this mean I can only like one post?

This isn’t the crash I was promised.

I sold all my coins at $9222 because they were no longer valuable. I’ll buy them again when they’re really worth something. Maybe in March at a new ATH seems a good buy point. I don’t want to miss out....
111  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 17, 2018, 10:59:15 AM
Good Morning Wobservers.

Hmmm... Bitcoin half price? Seems like a good time to sell. Maybe I’ll buy it again when it’s very expensive.

it's not half, it's 10x since 1000, not a good deal

But you haven’t taken inflation into account. $1000 doesn’t buy as much as it used it.

75 dollars fee on a 75 dollars tx. WAT.

That seems really high. I just paid $11 (0.0008) and got a confirmation in under 30 minutes.

Does Roach just get his posts from some sort of random bullshit generator?

I'm not sure. He keeps saying the same thing "This user is currently ignored."
115  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 11, 2018, 05:22:47 PM
Seriously, I am posting this the 3rd or 4th time. Is nobody worried about whats going on in the market? Who cashes out 100 Billion in 3 days for the 3rd time in 3 weeks? Pump and dump 100 Billion?
I don´t believe in these stories posted here like "people cash out, buy christmas presents" etc. No average Joe has this huge amount of cash.

Average Joe has just found himself considerably richer this year and scared of ‘losing’ his newfound wealth as happened in 2011 and 2014. As such, you can’t blame fear for making him jittery and selling preemptively of something that may or may not happen.

Weak hands is a real disease. Sadly institutional investors and more savvy investors have mo money and mo time and are quite happy to ‘wait’ as long as it takes to ‘buy all the coins’.

My 2 Satoshis.

FWIW. I am not selling anything and will carry on using Bitcoin with its ‘too high right now’ fees for now and the future.

Lightning requires segwit. Which is to say, it will be as worthless as segwit is.

This is one of the most ignorant and myopic statements I have ever seen someone make on these forums.

Sheeeeit !

It is getting very weird here, with strange people invading this post every day with bullsh!t & nonsense. We need a more tyrannical user voting system forum. Where we vote or give a grade to most everyone and those shills will have a label on them: "This users opinion does not matter!" ... That would be great!!! Make the forum great again!!! Cheesy Cheesy

Bring back the glowing ignore button.

A lot of Bitcoin Debit Cards have just been cancelled due to WaveCrest Gibraltar being terminated by VISA.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2018/01/05/visa-locks-bitcoin-payment-cards-crackdown-card-issuer/

Yep. Got an e-mail from Bitpay today to say that Wavecrest are not supporting it anymore.
Was told in the email that the funds will be returned to my Bitpay account.
Not sure if there is another card issuer out there for us Europeans.
I have a virtual Wirex card but I don't like their monthly fees.

I had a Xapo card but never actually used it. Revolut is a pretty cool mobile banking solution which I’ve been playing with since December. It has Cryptocurrency in Beta but (and it’s a bit but) you cant make payments via crypto other than via email addresses - I’m hoping this improves with time, but even if not, their currency conversion and standard debit cards (you can have as many as you want for free) are pretty cool. At the moment, I’m just playing with it for pocket money.

What we are witnessing right now are the last weeks of bitcoin being the dominant cryptocurrency. Ripple and Ethereum are both going to fly past it in the near term. I think that the total collapse might be just a few days away before the masses understand that there are no longer gains to be made in bitcoin and start evacuating their assets to these two more modern cryptocurrencies.

More modern cryptocurrencies? Some are not even cryptocurrencies (like ripple)! Some others don't even work, yet they have a price that goes up and down (like Uno)!!!!! Get real!

As for modernity, you can try the bitcoin lightning network here!!! https://htlc.me/
Of course, it's on testnet.

The Lightning Addresses seem kinda long. Please send me 20 cents.

Bitpay's new BIP70 payment form sucks. Doesn't work on my mobile wallets.

I'm old school. Gimme a Bitcoin address and let me magic up my own mining fee calculation based on the position of the stars and my overall mood at the time of payment!
