1001  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 12, 2014, 04:02:17 PM
I don't fully agree with the NEX argument. NEX had a lot of negative response because how it was operated by Frictionless. NEX also fails to compete with NXT because it doesn't have the know-how-how (doge pun intended) and it doesn't have the NXT network effect and the minds behind it. But you can operate BullDoge differently. You can see this also in how people view NEM - differently than NEX.

That's why I said the wink is important.

NEX was an attack.
NEM isn't.

For a moment it looked like we were going to put up a middle finger with Bulldoge.
That is asking for trouble.

If done in good fun, no problem, but if you anger the Doge crowd, you have a huge problem, like it or not.

I'm not willing to deal with that at the moment.

Can you imagine a swarm of angry Doge people in this thread? They are good at swarming.
1002  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 12, 2014, 03:44:05 PM
Maybe someone should create BullDoge on top of NXT  Smiley The stronger Doge. As a parody and as a show of force of NXT.

Actually, please do - to garner some attention from the Doge crowd.

It will garner some attention all right: negative attention.

Remember how we all reacted to NEX trying to get one over on NXT by calling it weak?

Why should anyone in Doge move over to Nxt?

That said: why would anyone trade exclusively in any "coin"?

The idea is funny, but doesn't take into account social dynamics Smiley

Edit: not a go at you. It's funny, but just won't work, taking into account how people are.

It's not about the coin actually. It's all about marketing with this coin.

If you create BullDoge, without doing anything outrageous, then you can ask the question; Why should anyone in Doge move over to Nxt?

As long as it's done with a HUGE wink Wink

On the ClieNXT front, the lack of paste function, at least in the Mac version, makes it's use very painful.

thanks for report. working on it! it will be fixed.

I just want to say that I think you are doing a great job.
Testing would have been much harder without your client! Smiley

Berlin (2)
Hive, BitAngels and Mastercoin guys, + many many others. We ale looking for a speaker at the San Francisco conf Smiley Everyone is so excited about Nxt, it is easy with nice T-shirts we have thanks tu admiral.fu

Texas guys are here, so the speaker is for sure.

Still only 2 Barbie girls, so not much fun, only business talks...

Can you take some pictures?
I'd like to have some to liven up today's summary! Smiley

Don't need faces if you don't want to be in them, just some of the conference itself is also good.

I can build a basic site easily and if you give me raw materials like pics and videos and raw copy text make something exciting out of it Smiley

It doesn't look to be a daily thing anyway, so that I could fit it in timewise.

We could do a visual donation and spending counter, so it would be easily tracked.

I hope someone like salsacz would like to volunteer a mailing campaign like he did for Nxt itself, as he already has all the addresses for news sources.

In short, ready to help. I like this idea. Smiley

wow ok sounds great! ya i was thinking once/twice weekly update would be enough! ok great to get the ball rolling! Cheesy

on my part just to say again funding is still a question mark, i know i will have the money but when... i cant say for sure.. :/ on the upside if it takes a bit longer then Nxt will be worth more hopefully and go further!

very excited about this now thanks guys much appreciated!

OK, once you have a more definite date, let me know.
These things work best with a short introductory period, otherwise readers move off.
I say we start the site up about a week/week and a half before you leave. That way we can use your preparations to get ready to build some interest.

Pictures will be very important! Be sure to make loads.

You can more easily contact me via PM when you are ready, as there are too many threads to keep track of at the moment.

1007  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 12, 2014, 10:51:01 AM
I say, good luck to DOGE.

They do a remarkable job spreading a feel good message.
Nxt does a totally different things, so I am a bit surprised people get so upset about Doge taking off.

It's a different beast and has its own curve of growth and decline. Comparing it to Nxt and vice versa is useless.

I for one am glad that at this moment it offsets the negativity surrounding BTC.

At this moment we have few things to offer to people who use Doge, so why waste energy worrying about it? We do good work at developing Nxt and that will pay off in the future. Price is unimportant at the moment. We are still attracting people. Even better, at the moment we are attracting people who are interested in a system that is developing, rather than people who want to quickly pump and dump.

So far as I see, we are doing well Smiley

I'm gonna be honest, I have been buying up as much NXT as I can at this price. Please keep it low for me Wink

Hi, guys, I'm on page 1635.......be with u in an hour or 2....
3 days not reading this thread was a mistake.

I have about a week to go through tomorrow.
Quit complaining Wink

Regarding spreading the news: what is our marketing committee doing so far?

As things are still in testing, but we need people to be aware Nxt is more than the NRS client and a coin, I am currently doing a series of all new clients on nxtcoins.nl

Target audience is basically people interested in technology, also able to figure it out with some help, but not developers.

In the articles for the clients I am always referring to upcoming features, so the AE has already been mentioned in the ClieNXT article.

Tomorrow I will again make a summary, summarising in broad terms the last week, so AE will definitely be in there. Again, aimed at the above group.

I don't believe in targeting any mainstream audience right now, so I don't.

At this moment, my take on marketing is all about awareness, and not about touting the features, as we are still in testing.

I'd rather tease some people to the wiki and this thread, than promise them a fully working system. That will just backfire.

I will probably play around with the AE and report my own (non tech) findings also.

At this point, I do not know what the committee is doing. They are preparing for Berlin, and I have been away most of the week.

Also: is there a committee? Have they been formed in the last week?

i could actually through together a webpage, one of the few tech skills i have (basic but enough!) although im short on time atm due to assignments and working 40 hours on top. but il sort something out on that front. its hard to say what i will come across.. i dont think i would be the right person to update the site however. i am not a creative writer by any means. perhaps instead i could send a draft of what i have done to someone and they could proof read/re-write it.

i can even record videos of peoples reactions when i tell them what im going to do (for example make a little clip of me telling the child and his/her parents that they have received enough donations to send the child to school. that would be so cool!

i cant do anything untill earliest may and i am waiting on something to come through before i could even afford to do this project (im not going to let the community pay for my trip, donations for people in need yes, my trip halfway round the world, no... lol thats not why im doing it.)

il publicly display a list of all donations and what they are going towards or they will simply be pending a good use and wont be touched until a deserving cause arises.

this is only the idea phase so any suggestions are welcome

thank you mcjavar aswell Smiley

I open http://holms.cloudapp.net:6874/ and input my passphrase. I got an account.
And then I use https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=345619.msg5054385#msg5054385  ClieNXT client.
I click UNLOCK and input the same passphrase as I did before.
I got another account! It's different from the previous one .  And I can send textnxt from the previous one to ClieNXT.

Where did I wrong thing ?

 Huh Huh

I use one passphrase to open an account :9569813167457446383
Then I open ClieNXT with the same passphrase, but get another account: 17305448910002659897.
I send 100k from 9569813167457446383 to 17305448910002659897. And ClienNXT shows I receive 100k under the account 17305448910002659897.

5mins later, the account on ClieNXT changed to 9569813167457446383 automatically. And I lost the account 17305448910002659897...
It's a magic.

Maybe you are using chinese characters for passphrase which is probably not compatible with the client. Just a guess.

Just abc and %^&*(,   not chinese characters.
With the same passphrase,  I got the same account 9569813167457446383 as on the web client, but with a time lag 5-10min.

I believe we have seen this before.
Did you copy/paste from a notepad?

Sometimes notepad adds line break characters into a passphrase under certain circumstances.

A month ago someone lost access to his account due to this, but when he found out managed to figure out where the breaks were. It's somewhere WAY back in the thread.

Granted, dogecoin has gone from Internet meme to one of the top five alt-coins in a matter of months, and granted there are also some features to it that may even improve upon bitcoin’s system. Certainly, having fun and encouraging others to do the same can be a very effective strategy to build buzz and goodwill. That the community was able to donate enough doegcoins (more than $30,000) to get the Jamaican bobsled team to the Sochi Olympics was a stroke of marketing genius.

But it’s worth remembering, too, that in the world of virtual currencies, there is almost no barrier to entry, and the success or failure of a system will depend upon its utility and its supporters. Because ultimately all these currencies – whether its dogecoin, bitcoin, or the U.S. dollar – are really just tools that aid commerce and business. How well they achieve that goal is the real measure of success.

1017  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Transparent mining 2, or What part of Legacy should be left behind on: February 10, 2014, 09:23:14 PM
Owning NXT is somewhat like owning shares in a virtual public company.  The shares were issued all at once, but they happen to be coins that are traded on crypto markets, which is nice because they are accessible to anyone.  They just happen to function as both shares and as the resource used in the network itself.

The forging fees are not attractive right now as an incentive for profit because there is no real activity yet.  To me, forging fees are more of a programmatic "dividend" that is built into the shares.  You are only paid this dividend if you show up to shareholder meetings (run a node).

This is an important point. Nxt is about transactions being done. It does nothing if no one doesn't dó anything. Any discussion about whether or not forging is profitable is moot until activity gets going.

What do you need to get activity? Services, and lots of them. This is one of the reasons I like incentivising service providers to forge.

That way the "passive" forgers (I like that term better than "selfish", because they too are providing a service to the network) will also get some of the dividend, but it will be less than the "active" forgers, who are actually making the network more attractive to use and also provide extra traffic and transactions.

As I said, in the proposed system, there still is a place for passive forging, but the gains will be much lower than for active forgers.

Tit for tat.

I completely agree!

Something, I would like to add: whatever ratio of passive/active forging we strive to, we should do the transition as smoothly as possible. Humans cannot bear change and especially not abrupt change.

I return my agreement with this Smiley Easy does it.

I also would like to add that terminology is important and would like to opt to keep the passiva/active forging terminology.

If "selfish" is used, prepare for a fight. Human nature and all that Smiley Also, "passives" are still providing something of value.

Somehow I think BCNext is Glurmo.
1020  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Transparent mining 2, or What part of Legacy should be left behind on: February 10, 2014, 05:31:54 PM
Mining reward is another obsolete part. True reward for supporting Nxt network comes from services that use Nxt. Someone owns a currency exchange and mine blocks to keep his business running. Another one owns a shop and mine blocks to keep his business running. The 3rd person owns a software company that develops programs for Nxt-based services and mine blocks to keep his business running. Selfish miners (those who mine only to earn fees) should be "removed" from the system, they r not interested in success of Nxt and only want to cash-out. If a clone appears such the people will likely jump to another ship, they add very little value to Nxt. All this doesn't mean that we should get rid of fees completely, we still need them as a countermeasure against spamming.

I like the idea, but then, I always liked the idea of "something for something".

+1

Like it or not, most people are selfish. These words from BCNext mostly apply to some ideal world, not ours. IMHO.

But BCNext explicitly states that clones will fix that problem, which they will. There will be room for clones that will reward the forgers who just want to forge, because there are people who want to do just that. This is what I like about the evolving world of the cryptos. The clone won't be bad, it will cater to a different niche. I say good luck to them and will mean it.

But, I am trader and merchant enough to see loads of interesting opportunities for people like me, who want to carve out a niche in Nxt, too Smiley

The upshot it also that if Nxt doesn't do this, probably someone else will make a clone who does it. Smiley
I wanted to say that, basically, if something is not interesting for selfish people, then this something cannot become widespread, it is doomed to remain restricted to a small community. Well, I'm afraid it will not work if we say "you have to run a Nxt node for the sake of better world!"...

Also, I think that saying "there is a clone that would do what you want" is strategically not good   Smiley

Just read the "Proof-of-Learning" article, where "learning" is a bit of a misnomer, but this is already a way of getting a huge adoption. I disagree that even with the "idealistic" setup, it will be restricted. People will play with the "rules".
If you go by the "Proof-of-Learning" model, you could still get huge returns on just running memes.  Cheesy

People will find ways to monetise with the least amount of work anyway.

But I get your point. I am just trying to not let go of mine Wink
