1001  Economy / Economics / Re: Good business/economy books! on: June 04, 2014, 03:32:14 PM
Sun Tzu Art of War has also been hailed as one of the greatest 'business books' around although it was originally meant for a military audience. This is because many of the strategies stated in the book can be applied to business!
For example, one of my favorite quotes from the book would be:

"The great fighters of the past first puts themselves beyond the possibilities of defeat,
then waited for an opportunity to defeat the enemy.

For you alone can deny victory to the enemy,
but only your enemy can allow you to win."
Oh! I've read Sun Tzu Art of War too. I almost forgot about it.
The advice that stuck with me most was about to take no sides until you really have to, so that your enemies will not know your stance.
It goes something along the lines of....the best formation an army could take is without formation...because if you have no formation, even the subtlest spies cannot report against you and the wisest generals cannot plan against you(?) and then it ends with 'using formation, lead your army to victory.'

Glad to see so many excellent and inspiring political leaders being recognized and recommended in this thread!
I would also like to honor Francis Bacon, an England politician in the late 1500s who served under both Queen Elizabeth I and King James I!
Although his father was a Lord Keeper, he climbed up the political ladder the hard way starting from an MP, to attorney general and eventually Lord Chancellor of England. He was a close adviser to the King and even supported some of the King's very controversial decisions so that he could convince the King to encourage Scientific Development in Britain!
In an era which was still burning witches at the stake, he managed to use his influence in court to encourage scientific endeavors and was widely regarded after his death as the father of the great scientific revolution of the western world.
He remained extremely influential through his works, especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific method during the scientific revolution.
Ahhhhh, Francis Bacon! I remember reading about him once in a history book.I liked one of the quotes he wrote in his greatest book, The Advancement of Learning where he wrote:

"And being now at some pause, looking back into that I have passed through, this writing seemeth to me (si nunquam fallit imago), as far as a man can judge of his own work, not much better than that noise or sound which musicians make while they are in tuning their instruments, which is nothing pleasant to hear, but yet is a cause why the music is sweeter afterwards. So have I been content to tune the instruments of the Muses, that they may play that have better hands. "

The humility of that man! Not many politicians nowadays can be humble like that if they are in his position.

What about 'The richest men in Babylon'??
I loved that book. Short and easy to read. In that book, one advice that stuck with me the most was 'Save at least 10% of all your income to be used as investment.'
In today's society where most people tend to spend MORE than they earn, I think saving money is a very rare virtue. And over a long time, 10% of your income in the right investments can even make you rich!

It is strange how the only Obama administration trade involves 5 of the most deadly taliban leaders out there for a guy who from what I am gathering deserted his platoon.  Maybe I am watching a little too much Homeland but could this guy be our Sgt. Brody

1006  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Who would you be allowed to marry in Israel today? on: June 04, 2014, 01:16:41 PM
It makes sense because it's a Jewish state. It could be you're talking about getting married in Jerusalem. If a non-Jew got married in Jerusalem, they would probably feel very uncomfortable. I'm a not sure why a non-Jew would want to get married in Israel anyway if they weren't marrying a Jew. What would be the point?
1007  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Thai military seizes power in coup on: June 04, 2014, 12:47:45 PM
If someone is concerned about security or safety in Thailand, he must read news too much while never travelling to this country. My impression about this country is: pacific.
Thais are pacifists. Most of them are Buddhist. They are very friendly, simple. There is pickpocket but I guess it is not worse than the same in Rome, Milan, Paris or Madrid.
People who demonstrate must suffer too much for too long. If I have another chance to travel there, I would not mind.
I think you're right. Correct me if I'm wrong but the most extreme Buddhist extremist I've seen so far is self-immolation. Even when they get so angry they could harm someone, the first person they harm is themselves! I think that says a lot about their idealism.
Well I think most extreme Buddhist extremists are in countries where Buddhism is national religion. They put pressure on the government to throw away from the country some people. You can find it in Burma or Sri Lanka. Most recently in Burma Buddhist people wanted to deport a minority group who is not Burmese originally.
But these people, I mean Buddhist, seem not to like the idea of killing. And you are so right that if they have to kill, they choose to kill themselves. But to me it is bad enough. Just an opinion.
1008  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Thai military seizes power in coup on: June 04, 2014, 12:09:19 PM
Yes let's go guys. There is no army or curfew in Phuket or Pattaya. We may enjoy cheap price while others are scared. Revenue from tourism industry occupies large percentage in Thailand's GDP and large Thais population live on tourists. I guess they will come up with some strategy to get tourists back. Imagine what might happen if hundred thousand people are unemployed due to the stop of tourist flow to this beautiful country. It is gonna be worst than the presence of army in the street.

An important tip for those who are planning a trip to Thailand: you are gonna enjoy interesting exchange rate (THB/USD, THB/EUR) due to this chaotic situation.
Yea, I think now is indeed a unique time to visit Bangkok. See how the military rule is like. However, you are putting your safety at risk. But who knows, it might be safer now if crime rates manage to decrease due to the military preserving the peace.
Agreed. No matter how pacific Thais people are, or real situation in Bangkok is, or how much lower crime rate in Thailand is in comparison with one in US, I could not find any reason to visit that country during this time.
Vacation is vacation, where people go to relax and refresh. If I search for an adventure, I would go to Columbia for rock climbing, but not jumping into a war.
For you guys who love tropical beaches, Maldives is close by Thailand.

I was thinning a url tracker can do that also so you can get more precise of where the traffic is coming from but not sufe if they are blocking those kinds url tracking tecniques.  There was a site I use to use for tracking traffic from my CL advertising.  They give u tracking codes
1012  Other / Off-topic / Re: Best site for earning btc using signature? on: May 29, 2014, 05:57:44 PM
There were rumors that they will be advertising sigs on other forums, not just this one.  I guess we will have to wait and see when they are going to release those campaigns here.  Its smart not to base a sig campaign only on this this site alone
1013  Other / Off-topic / Re: Video: Edward Snowden NBC NEWS FULL INTERVIEW on: May 29, 2014, 05:48:28 PM
I think this interview is causing some anger management issues inside the white house and pentagon, and I'm sure Snowden didn't say anything that could compromise the US security, and he might be keeping that as a backup plan
yeah but the US government is going to probably make up lies, make up false evidence just like what they did to Dread pirate roberts.

The Gov will do anything to cover there own tracks

1st, no more car manufacturers. We have government mandated designs only. 1 coupe, 1 sedan, 1 pickup and 1 suv/van all based on the same drivetrain. You can have multiple car companies make them but they would all be identical except color. they would be cheap to make and easy to repair.

HP limit at 75. 3 or 4 cyl engines only.
speed limiters for all vehicles except emergency vehicles at 75mph max
gps controlled speed limiting so you can't go over the speed limit
cellphone blockers in the car
no radio
breathalyzer for all vehicles
stricter penalties
raise starting age for drivers licenses
institute European testing requirements/punishments
no more racing sports, too dangerous and bad for environment.

that's a good start. would cut down greatly on deaths AND would also cut down on the pollution. win win.

hell, it would also cut down on envy between classes since poor and rich would be driving the same thing. win win win.

Mental health is a problem
gangs are a problem
failure to enforce existing laws is a problem
lack of education is a problem
failures of parents is a problem

majority of gun crimes are done by criminals and illegal weapons, the majority of what's left is suicides, the majority of what's left of that is accidents. You aren't going to do shit about that with new gun laws and restrictions because the current ones are already in place and just ignored.
Other nations have issues with gangs and mental healthcare, but they don't have the same amount of gun violence as the United States.
It seems like you're either denying reality that gun violence in a problem in the USA, or you're making an awful lot of assumptions about the term gun violence
not denying it at all, I'm not using guns as an excuse to avoid the real problems. Yes other countries have issues with gangs and mental health and the deal with them better than we do as well.
Also it would be far more effective, easier and cheaper to go after the deaths by car since you aren't dealing with criminals that already ignore existing laws. Not sure why that's not an issue.

This how illogical Liberal thinking is
Does this fucking moron think this will have any impact on the criminal element in the Windy City?

Chicago mayor wants gun stores isolated, inspected, sales videotaped

Following a ruling by a federal court to allow gun stores in Chicago again, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is proposing strict regulations that include videotaping sales and refusing zoning in 99.5 percent of the city.

This comes after a January 2014 order by Federal Judge Edmond E. Chang, who found that the city’s de-facto 2010 ban on the sale of firearms inside its limits was unconstitutional. Following that order, the mayor requested six months to set up a list of regulations for these vendors.
Now, with more than four months elapsed, the Mayor’s office gave a sneak peak of its proposed tough new ordinance governing gun shops this week.

According to the Chicago Sun Times, this would include setting up special zoning that would limit shops to very narrowly outlined pockets, effectively placing 99.5 percent of the city off limits. Further, the stores could not be located within 500 feet of a park or school.

“There is no question it will be the smartest, toughest regulation on gun stores in the country,” said Janey Rountree, the mayor’s deputy chief of staff for public safety. “It’s designed to prevent gun trafficking and illegal sales in these stores.”

In addition to the restrictions on location, stores would have to video tape gun sales, conduct regular audits, and submit security plans to the Chicago Police Department for review. Moreover, owners would have to allow CPD to inspect their records and ration handgun sales to just one per customer per month.

Those stores found out of compliance could lose their license to operate inside the Windy City for up to three years.

Chicago effectively regulated the few gun stores that remained in the city’s limits in 2010 out of business in an effort to stem the tide of illegal guns available on the streets. Nevertheless, recent data released by CPD show that no less than 6,800 illegal guns were confiscated in the city in 2013 alone.

This is nothing new for the largest city in the Land of Lincoln. Between 2001 and 2012, CPD confiscated over 50,000 illegal firearms.

In 2012, the NYPD, responsible for a city of 8.3-million residents, picked up 3,285 guns and still had active gun shops. By comparison, Chicago cops, in a city of just 2.7-million, hauled in 7,400 guns with no operational shops inside the city.

While the proposed city ordinance has not been released for public review, it is expected to be finalized in coming weeks.
As such, gun rights groups such as the National Rifle Association, are reserving comment.

The deadline for submitting the ordinance is currently set for July 14.

I forgot pastafarianism they worship this giant fly spaghetti monster its more of a joke but its an actual religion.
Church of the Flying Spagetti Monster is a little more political .As a movement, Pastafarianism parodies orthodox religion and opposes the teaching of creationism and intelligent design. For example, prayers end with the word ‘ramen’ instead of ‘amen’ – a nod to Japanese noodles. .......but still a goofy religion
1019  Other / Off-topic / Re: What Are Some of The Craziest Religions Out There? on: May 29, 2014, 01:02:55 PM
I guess people invent religions because of their need to believe in something. They are weak so they need someone that is said to protect them. As sometimes certain religions do not suit someone's needs, they start creating other religions. And this is how weird religions come up.
