1021  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Go to Wall St in Front of N.Y. Stock Exchange With Sandwich Billboard - 100BTC on: February 21, 2011, 05:05:19 PM
ok, he's gonna do it tuesday morning. he will have an aspiring filmmaker buddy of his shoot it and put it up on youtube.

as for the costume, I think the main point isn't so much that it relates to bitcoin but rather that it gets people's attention. I mean isn't that the ultimate goal? A lot of these suggestions like 1's and 0's will have no meaning whatsoever for the avg wall streeter that will see it. When I spoke with him today, he wanted to wear a hip suit. He is a former male model after all so I'm sure he can pull it off and look good it in. This way, he'll look sharp, but it won't be in the typical wall street navy suit way but rather a funky, hip, colorful way.

Any ugly guy can wear a coin costume. We've got a former model here so let's leverage his skill set. Remember that it's new york and wall street, people here are huge snobs. We see crazy fools on the street all the time so we're desensitized to it. I think it will have a much bigger impact if he looks trendy rather than a wacko. I also think the message will get a lot more respect and people will be more likely to read the flyer if it came from a well dressed, trendy model than a nutcase is a crazy suit.

Sponsors, would this choice of wardrobe be all right with you?
I agree this is the right way to go.  Can't wait to see it!!!

Does anybody know what would be the best time of the day to get media coverage?
1022  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin 10x parity. When will 1BTC=10USD? Vote! on: February 20, 2011, 12:22:43 AM
I guessed before July (BECAUSE I CAN).

This parity thing is getting a little weird though, people are quite obsessive about some numbers which are ultimately meaningless in relation to Bitcoin's true value.

Although, maybe we should raise the stakes, anyone prepaired to start betting over this?

Doing the betting on here would bring bitcoin some exposure: http://www.intrade.com/
1023  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: drop in btc value on: February 20, 2011, 12:22:07 AM
While Bruce's prediction seems wildly optimistic, almost anything could happen given the very small float of btc that are out there.  The virality of the web can cause astounding things to happen.

Forget a shiek.  If just one medium-sized virtual goods company, or a tipping company like Flattr or Kachingle, or a second-tier social network like Friendster or Hi5 started using bitcoin who knows where the price could go.

Or if bitcoin suddenly caught the attention of some forex traders on one of the forums, or if a mildly wealthy retiree who was fascinated by the technology started telling his mildly wealthy buddies, or better yet if we got an article in Wired, Fast Company, BusinessWeek or other mainstream publication... any of these reasonable possibilities could send it skyward.

On the other hand, if a sizeable player like Zynga liked what they saw but instead of adopting bitcoin forked the project... I think that could be the end of this bitcoin.

Another monkey wrench could be a credit collapse.  At that point people will sell everything, even gold and bitcoin, to pay their debts.

Jeffayle, PM sent.
1025  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Will pay BTC for iPhone, iPod Touch or Android phone on: February 18, 2011, 10:31:19 PM
I'm interested, just sent a PM.
1026  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Will pay BTC for iPhone, iPod Touch or Android phone on: February 18, 2011, 09:36:44 PM
Deal.  PM sent.

I'm still looking for an iPhone/iPod Touch.  As an alternative to BTC or as partial payment I have a 'like new' Nokia N8 to trade.
1027  Economy / Marketplace / Will pay BTC for iPhone, iPod Touch or Android phone [closed] on: February 18, 2011, 08:21:29 PM
I'm looking for these phones to do some app testing.  So they don't need to be in mint condition, and they don't need to have 32 Gb etc.
Post or PM me with what you would like to get rid of.  I'm in Ontario, Canada.
1028  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Go to Wall St in Front of N.Y. Stock Exchange With Sandwich Billboard - 100BTC on: February 18, 2011, 02:29:34 PM
Isn't Monday a holiday in the US? Doubt there will be many people around the NYSE if so.

That is correct, the NYSE will be closed on Monday, February 21st.  Which means it will make whoever 'protests' on that day look a little clueless to anyone who does happen to walk by.  There will be mocking of bitcoin.

Tuesday on the other hand could be a better day than average, I would guess, as everyone rushes anxiously back to work.
1029  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Go to Wall St in Front of N.Y. Stock Exchange With Sandwich Billboard - 100BTC on: February 18, 2011, 02:33:08 AM
Maybe instead of underwear he could be in a barrel.  Sort of drawing attention to the fact the Fed is bankrupting the country etc. etc.
1030  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wired Magazine on: February 18, 2011, 01:08:27 AM
Clive got back to me...here is what he said...

Hi [Jimbobway]!

Yes, I read it, and my apologies for not getting back to you more quickly.

I'm a big fan of alternative currency systems, and bitcoin looks excellent! I don't have any immediate plans to write on alternative digital currencies right now, but it's a subject I'd love to write about at *some* point. I'll keep your email on file for when I get a chance to do so!
Well that's something, great job jimbobway.  If this ever does show up in Wired.... BOOM!
1031  Economy / Economics / Re: Monty Hall and Let's Make A Deal problem on: February 17, 2011, 02:16:30 PM
Yeesh this thread is so cryptic.  And the only message I can decipher from it is very unpleasant.  I hope clarification is forthcoming.
1032  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Live solely off of bitcoins on: February 15, 2011, 05:20:26 PM
Given certain performance parameters I'd be willing to donate to this project.

One way to ensure compliance is to give out part of the bounty at designated stops along the way.

Applicants for this publicity stunt should outline how they plan to garner as much attention as possible for bitcoin from their escapades.
1033  Other / Off-topic / Finally, equity-based crowdfunding on: February 15, 2011, 02:58:39 PM
http://www.crowdcube.com/

That should give a nice boost to crowdfunding.  I see it is only available in the UK.  I wonder what the regulations are with respect to equity-based crowdfunding.  Would those regulations apply to a bitcoin-oriented site, even though bitcoin isn't issued by the central bankers?

Is that what this is? http://sourceforge.net/projects/wooki/
1035  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Live solely off of bitcoins on: February 15, 2011, 02:50:42 PM
Now that doublec has ported Bitcoin to the N900 smartphone, I think the easiest way to live for one month off Bitcoin would be to send some coins to the phone and go on a road trip across the US.

Each night, stay at the home of a bitcoin user and pay them in bitcoins. Also pay them to drive you to your next destination.

With a bit of planning, it should be possible to travel from one coast to the other this way in a month.

I think this is a great idea too.  Not only because it might draw national media attention, but because it will almost certainly draw local media attention in each of the markets you visit.  Those small town newspapers and television stations are probably starving for human interest stories.  We could watch the increase in nodes on the bitcoin map as you make your way across the continent.

I'd wait for spring to do it though.  No point in needlessly freezing to death due to a logistical mixup.

Though that would certainly guarantee media coverage.

thanks for the advice... PM sent Nefario
1037  Economy / Marketplace / setup my Ruby on Rails site on: February 14, 2011, 03:04:20 PM
I've never worked with Ruby on Rails so I'm looking for someone to make a recommendation regarding a host and then set up this code for me.

I can pay in BTC or USD, respond here or via PM with your required payment.
1038  Economy / Economics / Re: Ounces of Silver to Buy a Median-Priced Home on: February 14, 2011, 02:57:41 AM
I agree with S3052.  Silver could fall hard, lower than it did in late 2008, for the same reason as late 2008: people will be selling everything to get their hands on USD, to pay their USD-denominated debts.

On the other hand I've been waiting for it to happen for quite awhile now.  This credit implosion is taking it's sweet time to arrive.

Yes, great idea.
Something you should post on WoW communities too if you haven't already.
1040  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Preventing fraud and scams and building reputation for new users on: February 11, 2011, 06:35:40 PM
Asking for service providers to connect with you on Facebook or LinkedIn can help.  That way they reveal their real identity and you can see if they have a long-term established network of connections.  Sometimes you might even have a mutual connection.

Also, there might be a plugin for SMF where users can vouch for one another, or collect reputation points.
