10401  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: attempted hack? let me know what you think on: April 19, 2014, 06:28:03 AM
I just restarted my computer (OSX). the OS asked me if I wanted to 'deny' or 'let' two unknown files send out informtion. I clicked 'deny'. Openned Bitcoin-QT and now having to reindex.

Opened Chome to go to the forum (bitcointalk) and Chrome interfered saying an outside source is trying to redirect me.

thoughts?

I hope my coin is still there after the reindex

When in doubt, assume its an attack an move your coins. Keep in mind that a keylogger might be installed allready.
Its allways better to move your coins and have not been attacked than to do nothing and tomorrow the attacker succeeds.

You can also ask at your university if the would give you money for a survey, they usually have funds for that. The department for economics at my university usually pays ~0.027/hour at current rates. They have longer surveys though.

The department pays you in bitcoin? That's awesome  Smiley

I wish they would, they pay in cash, which is the next best thing. Just calculated the btc price to give an estimate what OP could consider paying Wink
10406  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: upgraded to v0.9.1 and "bitcoin-qt -conf=..." on win7 stops working on: April 18, 2014, 11:16:20 AM
Hmm 0.8.0 is from early 2013

The info from the wiki is from 2011, so it might have been an unintended feature.
10407  Other / Off-topic / Re: How long have you been logged in for? on: April 18, 2014, 06:06:57 AM
Total time logged in: 8 days, 23 hours and 6 minutes.
10408  Other / Off-topic / Re: How Secure is 2-step verification on: April 18, 2014, 05:39:59 AM
Well if someone gets your session key they are pretty much logged in allready, no 2fa can help you there. Withdrawal should allways be something you have to confirm.
The localbitcoins incident looks like a stolen session key.
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/23a26k/breaking_remove_your_btc_from_localbitcoins/

What to do? Well the usual

- dont stay logged in after you are done
- dont click any strange links. Best thing would probably to not click links at all, but I dont think thats feasible
I got a good topic to study now..! will collect all the required info about session key to know more about it and how to avoid falling in trap..! I can't even ask for links :p as you mentioned don't click links :p

Probably a good way to start researching are the steam hacks or steam account hijacks. People take over steam accounts with just a link clicked from within steam chat. And steam uses this 2fa auth system if you want to login on a new system. They send you a mail with a code thats valid for only a short period of time. And even if you get that persons steam password and mail password you have to wait 14 days on the new system to trade. But people get robbed all the time.

All command-line options (except for -datadir and -conf) may be specified in a configuration file, and all configuration file options may also be specified on the command line. Command-line options override values set in the configuration file.

from here: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Running_Bitcoin

Just put the data dir in the command link like

Code:
c:\abc\bitcoin\bitcoin-qt -conf=f:\def\btc\bitcoinqt.conf -datadir=f:\def\btc

and you should be fine.

According to the wiki, this isnt news either.

10411  Other / Off-topic / Re: Opening harddrive on: April 18, 2014, 05:02:14 AM

Totally wrong. Harddrives contain normal air at ambient pressure. It is clean from dust and is actively filtered by built-in filter as the drive spins.
Hard drives are openable without using clean room and similar technology.
-snip-

After reading up on that, I have to say: indeed I was wrong. I allways hear a hissing sound when I open a HDD so I assumed there was at least low pressure. Then you read about these new drives with gas... well, thanks for that. Smiley
10412  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Problem with upgrading bitcoin 0.9.0 to 0.9.1 on Ubuntu on: April 18, 2014, 04:58:19 AM
Looks like you have to do it by hand, like this guy here:

How can I Upgrade my Bitcoin QT?

I use Linux Ubunto and I don't know what to do.

Being a noob myself I asked the same question and got no answer here. Just to have it clear I was using bitcoin 0.9.0 from Ubuntu PPA and
had my libssl1.0.0 updated however in the debug window it still showed old/insecure version of OpenSSL.

So here is what I did:

-First thing first back up ur wallet.
-Shut down your client.
-Now make a backup of your current bitcoin-qt executable/shared library which should be in /usr/bin
Code:
cd /usr/bin
sudo mv bitcoin-qt bitcoin-qt.bckup
-Download and verify bitcoin-0.9.1-linux.tar.gz
-Navigate to your Home directory
Code:
cd ~
-and then to Downloads
Code:
cd Downloads
-unzip what you've downloaded
Code:
tar xvzf bitcoin-0.9.1-linux.tar.gz
-Navigate to just unzipped directory
Code:
cd bitcoin-0.9.1-linux
-and then depending on whether your system is 32 or 64 do
Code:
cd bin/32

/* alternatively if your system is 64 do */

cd bin/64
-copy bitcoin-qt from this directory to /usr/bin
Code:
sudo cp bitcoin-qt /usr/bin

-start your client the usual way.

Hope it helps...

I really like the idea of attaching a "open source licence" to seeds, but farmers will not. I watched a program about a farmer spent 5 years breeding a sweeter and less bitter brussels sprouts and I am sure he is not sharing his seeds.... and there are flower breeders too.

Yeah, I think that as well, but you will never know. Maybe not all farmers are after profit. Especially the small farms must find a niche. "All natural open source veggies", Id buy that, even if it was a little more expensive.
10414  Other / Off-topic / Re: Open Source (Free) Seeds! on: April 17, 2014, 08:20:06 PM
I have read somewhere that some insecticide/weed-killer manufacturers sell GM seeds which are immune to their insecticide/weed-killer. Farmers can spray their crop, killing everything except the their GM crops. These farm grown GM crops do not produce seeds.

I was speechless when I first read about plants that dont have seeds. But it looks like it pays off for the farmers.

I think that's mostly a US problem currently. I've never heard something as stupid as needing patents to take seeds from plants, lol.
Also, a plant derived from a seed will not be the same as the plant it derived from, and that's the way nature created it.
But I guess it's a good idea with open source plants to stop patents and stuff lol! Cheesy

Up to 85% of US corn is Genetically modified, could be this hybrid thing or not.
You can't even eat proper vegetables from the nature.

From what I read, it looks like argentinia is leading with 72%, but the USA have the biggest area compared to others countries.

-snip-
Having a convo with my IRL friends about if America actually has their gold is 100% impossible.  "OH there has to be another reason Germany hasn't gotten their gold"

I dont want to be rude, but maybe you need new friends. Maybe they are your friends for different reasons and you need additional friends.
Some people just dont care, so you have to ask yourself if you can life with them beeing your friends.
10416  Other / Off-topic / Open Source (Free) Seeds! on: April 17, 2014, 07:18:30 PM
"Most commercial vegetable seeds are
hybrids, which come with a kind of built-in
security lock; if you replant seed from a
hybrid, you won't get exactly the same kind
of plant. (For this reason, some seed
companies don't bother getting patents on
their hybrids.)"

But now these people made open source seeds. Anyone can use them and also use the seeds from the old plants.

Awesome, I hope more and more researchers will do this.

Friend: "I asked my uncle about Fractional banking and he said he never heard about it so you are clearly wrong"

Almost everyone I know is way to lazy to actually do any research themselves and then decide they are an expert on the subject they know nothing about..

Another golden one: "America could sell all the gold they own to cover their debt"
Me: "Do you know how much gold america has and it's worth"
Tool: "Fort Knox isn't empty"
Me: "............ Take all of the gold america says it has and multiply it against the price of gold....................................................."
Tool: "I don't need to obviously they can pay off their debt with their gold stop watching youtube"

I just.. people actually think they are right..

okay.. /end rant.

See they say they have gold there... but in fact, if another country wants it's gold back... It takes a while.

one finger death punch

Is my game at the moment.

Just using two mouse buttons, but loads of fun. Is like that it adjusts to my skilllevel, so its allways a challange. The over the top 80's kung-fu styles and the cheap price made it an easy buy.

10419  Other / Off-topic / Re: Opening harddrive on: April 17, 2014, 06:19:29 PM
Any ideas on how to open a hard drive?

It makes a strange ticking noise at the same interval. I think the head is stuck. The screws used on top are of a strange form;
http://www.maximumpc.com/files/u90693/drive_seagate-27945_full.jpg

If you open it its gone, so why bother? There usually is a vaccum (sometimes a gas) and opening the drive will cause this to suck dust into your drive. Which will headcrash your drive.

The clicking sound usually indicates that your drive had a headcrash and needs to be replaced. Thats nothing you can repair on your own or without spending a lot of money.

Don't have much money nor do I own any Bitcoins.... so tough luck for me I guess  Tongue

but thanks for the advice

Well if you want to write about bitcoins you should maybe try to spend some. Get some experience yourself.

You can also ask at your university if the would give you money for a survey, they usually have funds for that. The department for economics at my university usually pays ~0.027/hour at current rates. They have longer surveys though.
