10444  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Terminology on: April 13, 2014, 12:57:26 PM
So Ive been dabbling in bitcoin & crypto for about 6+ months but still find myself new to a lot of aspects of it.  Below are a couple questions to help clarify what these terms mean, I appreciate any help & insight?

What is a fork (for mining purposes, not eating purposes), and why does it happen?

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1a51xx/now_that_its_over_the_blockchain_fork_explained/

What does FUD stand for? (Ive come to conclusion FUD is spreading rumors of some sort, just cant figure out the acronym)

No, im not a google extention.
10445  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Verify litecoin-qt download on: April 13, 2014, 09:52:54 AM
I am pretty new to using PGP(I know I should have started earlier). I am using GPA(also have Kleopatra installed)
I just wanted to try to verify my Litecoin-QT download. So I downloaded
litecoin-0.8.6.2-win32-setup.exe and
litecoin-0.8.6.2-win32-setup.exe.asc
(same directory), I also imported the PGP-Key 969276F5(Litecoin Dev Team), I set the key to marginal trust.
Then I opened the asc-file in GPA and clicked Verify. It says "invalid". Did I do something wrong?
(I am using the german version and might have translated something wrong)

Wichtig ist was drinn steht.

Code:
gpg --verify datei.exe signatur.sig

Quelle: http://www.gnupg.org/documentation/manpage.html

Natürlich vorher den Key importieren.

Mit Kleopatra kenn ich mich kaum aus, scheint mir auch alles sehr kompliziert zu sein, aber hier:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=297434.0

wurde das Thema schonmal schritt für schritt behandelt. Ging nicht um eine Datei sondern um Text, aber das sollte dir doch einen Schups in die richtige Richtung geben Cheesy
10446  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: FAKE or STOLEN Bitcoins on: April 13, 2014, 09:37:41 AM
Is it possible for someone to give me fake or stolen bitcoins?

How long do I wait to make sure a BTC is "legit" and truly mine?

Yes, as allready said, it is possible. Same as it is possible that the person in front of you at the supermarket line stole the cash and the cashier gives it to you as change. But even IF you get stolen coins, as long as you got the legitimately, you dont have to fear anything.

Now how long do you have to wait. While bitcoin core suggests you to wait for 6 confirmations in the network, Im usually fine with only 2 when I get payment <1 bitcoin. If you feel insecure about this, wait for 6 confirmations.
10447  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Client Choice on: April 13, 2014, 08:51:31 AM
What do you mean exactly by 'maximum entropy'?

He is basically asking which BT client has the best number generator. E.g. Bitcoin QT uses the one from your OS (afaik!). Sooo lets say you use windows 3.11 and it can come up with a random number between 0 and 32, bitcoin qt will be very limited Wink

In that case, Bitcoin-QT on Linux with a hardware RNG attached would probably be best. Or if you don't have a hardware RNG, just point a camera at a lava lamp and seed /dev/random from it. That should also give you sufficiently unpredictable input, and it'll look cool.

I like the idea with the lava lamp =)

16GB ram? That's definitely not the problem, but I recommend Kingston

The amount of RAM is never a problem. Had a 32 Gig machine at a lab crashing constantly while installing a fresh linux yesterday. After removing 4 Gigs of it, it worked fine. Took us a while to figure out which of the RAM modules had the problem though.
10450  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is MINING actually WORTH it now? on: April 12, 2014, 06:44:41 AM
What would be the MINIMUM amount of Hashes per second would be necessary to make "mining" worth it?

Worth it is actually getting coins in a reasonably short amount of time.

What is the cost to get that many Hashes?

If someone is not willing or able to invest in FULL TIME mining?  should they bother?

There is no "MINIMUM" amount of Hashes/s, it greatly depending on your investmentcosts in hardware and your runing costs (mostly electricity).

Not sure what you think is a reasonable amount and what you consider a short amount of time either.

1 Bitcoin in a week? Is that reasonable? 1 in a month? Do you want to make this your fulltime job? Do you want to pay your flat or buy a house with the profits? Do you have a wife and 5 kids maybe? What do I know what you consider reasonable...

If you want to invest in mining for a profit, search up some caluclators and consider the difiiculty! Consider a high difficulty raise and the time till you get your hardware.
10451  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help Stabilising my GPU please? on: April 12, 2014, 05:55:45 AM
Don't use a PC or laptop rig, when something burns out it can affect other equipment. Mining isn't profitable anyways but if you're mining for the heck of it build an external rig and connect it to a raspberry pi, or just use asic's, your choice

I would assume he is mining crypt and not SHA256. Anyway, he allready has a mining rig. Thats like:

A: My Computer does xy, how do I fix it?
B: Install linux!

Its bad advise.

Anyway, I had my GPU problems over the years and all I can say is: it sucks and there is not much you can do.
- You can try to underclock your GPU's while you dont mine, looks like you did this though
- You can also try to disable the 2nd GPU, not sure if you tried this while you check crossfire
- You can try a different approach: maybe its not your GPU. Random crashes usually indicate a problem with your RAM. It is strange though that you dont have Problem with LoL, but usually a System is way to complex to say this runs fine, but those dont. Might be luck that LoL runs Wink To check if its a problem with your RAM, run memtest86+. This might take a while to show an error though, I recommend testing 24h (also see http://code.google.com/p/cryptsetup/wiki/FrequentlyAskedQuestions "4.4 How do I test RAM?").
I would bet on a RAM problem tbh. Chrome and Firefox are not very GPU intensive. There might be however a problem with the RAM on those GPUs. There are tools out there to check your GPU memory, but I can not recommend any, because I have not tried any. See here for a start: http://superuser.com/questions/456435/how-can-i-test-my-gpu-memory-ram

Edit: almost forgot the all-time-classic. Try switching to a different GPU if you have an old one somewhere or maybe you can get one from a friend for a day or two. Maybe you have a nice person that would try your GPU.

46.77 Wink

I wonder which is OPs main account. It is pretty obvious imho that the account was made just for this occasion.

BitCoin is supposed to be cash money for people (read the the BitCoin wiki and the example about if you go buy from a store and hand the cashier $20 or read the example about identity theft risks when you hand the waiter your credit card)

Cash. Noone helps you if you lose it. It is yours to protect.

Now people used to hide their cash money before at home (mattress, pillow, safe ..etc) which no one knows how much you have and how much you spend or how much you earn. Later on when thieves start robbing those houses, then banks came out, people started to put their cash money in banks, they gave up their anonymity and their income info ...etc in order to be safe and protect their hard earning money. Point is: Banks came for a reason!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_banking

Quote
The history of banking begins with the first prototype banks of merchants of the ancient world, which made grain loans to farmers and traders who carried goods between cities. This began around 2000 BC in Assyria and Babylonia. Later, in ancient Greece and during the Roman Empire, lenders based in temples made loans and added two important innovations: they accepted deposits and changed money.

Banks havent protected you or your money. They have made money of your needs. They still do.

Also how many of you check the neighborhood before renting an apartment? cause you don't want your kids be around drug dealers or arm dealers ..etc?

I dont check the neighborhood. I know which parts of the city are "good" and which are "bad". Why? My parents/peers/friends/etc. taught me.

well BitCoin world right now if full of those people which help increasing drugs and all kind of crap around where you live slowly, they found a great way to hide themselves behind BitCoin!

There will allways be crime. Its not that there is more crime because "bitcoin". Its just another way to pay, like cash, like it was intended.

Majority of website now that deal with BitCoins keep you anonymous, you only need any email and a password to start buy and sell BitCoin.

Have you had an account at an exchange? I dont think so. I gave them my tax declaration, but it was to old (merely 8 month), so I had to get an official proof of residence in order to do trades. It is easier to get an apartment room than to trade bitcoins at an exchange.

If you lose your private key, you are done, your whole money is gone, no way to retrieve it, otherwise MT GOX would have been able to fix their crap. how many people here on this forum posted a thread losing their BitCoins?

If you lose your cash, it is gone. If you dont take care of your things, it is not the fault of those things. It is your fault.

Even if you back up your private key on your desktop, how many people click on different links online everyday? watch porn? or check new websites? ...etc regardless what's the reason, the average person do click on many links everyday or download some crap or even go to those file sharing websites, or download a movie or or or...etc, any of these links can have a virus with it and then you are screwed.

If that is true, the "average person" needs to learn how to use the internet. The internet is not a green garden where everyone is nice and friendly. The internet is like the world out there. You find nice people, you find bad people, you find morrons and smart people. Youll get robbed in most major cities if you are drunk in a train and look like money. You might get a deadly disease if you touch the wrong things.

BitCoin is not built for an average person to deal with so far, many people don't understand how to protect their BitCoin account.

Many people need to learn. You like banks so much, dont you? If you get a trojan your bank does not protect you when your money is gone. Its your fault. If you creditcard gets stole you are lucky because everyone knows they are not safe. Get your ATM card stolen? Your problem, you shouldnt have told someone else your PIN. Thats how banks treat you. You have to prove(!) that you didnt not reveal your secret. Thats impossible.

Major Big Banks don't want to handle their customers BitCoins accounts saying it is too risky, SO HOW ABOUT A NORMAL PERSON?

Who would go to a bank and ask if they would handle their bitcoins?

This private key crap and anonymity on the websites need to come to an end. Wallets and Exchange websites need to start asking (on Sign up) for the person name, Date of Birth, secret question ..etc, or Even have them Sign in with their FACEBOOK account.

I dont have a facebook account, so I am not allowed to use the internet now? Also even facebook allows anonymous users, they dont like it, but its not like they going to stop you.

THOSE PRIVATE KEYS NEED TO BE LINKED TO A PERSON INFORMATION, so in case of theft they can prove who own the money and who stole it.

Even Smart people like (danny) says that after 10 or so years when there is too many people dealing with BitCoins then they will have to change some algorithm or do this or that, proving that even if the system is secure for the time being (which is not since 100s of millions of dollars were lost so far and never recovered), still the system on the long run is not secure enough.

Ofc, no security algorithm is perfect. That does not mean that bitcion is insecure.

Until the founders or whoever find a way to link (or change) those private keys to names and address and SSN or whatever, THE SYSTEM WILL ALWAYS BE TREATED AS TOO RISKY! and it is preventing it from advancing so far, otherwise BitCoin by now (after 5 years) would have made it and became the world number currency!

People are putting money into bitcoins and they dont seem to treat them as "too risk"... I dont know where you get those ideas...

As for those of you who like to avoid taxes and don't want to pay shit to the gov., well again my tax pay for the police and I like knowing that there is a policeman out there is willing to die for a motherfucker like me if someone tries to hurt me or my family!

Bitcoin has nothing to do with "not paying taxes", bitcoin is a way to pay online without paypal or all that other crap out there. No chargebacks, no bullshit, just pay and go, like in a store paying with cash.

Rodney King payed taxes. Its not all black and white, most of it is gray.
10456  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Crash! price of BTC on: April 10, 2014, 05:08:38 PM
I agree with your theory, However I think the world is not ready for it. it is like the ".com" bubble, when many company lost and filed bankruptcy at the time, later one the ".com" market came back steady and succeeded.

Crypto-Currency is acting the same way, however the BitCoin market will struggle until some bank come up with a completely safe way to deal with BitCoin transactions.
Now that major banks are slowly dropping BitCoin accounts, it is now up to the private "BitCoin-only banks" to come up with that safe way and those people don't have the enough experience yet to deal with such huge amount of money and at any moments they may end up like MT GOX.

Point is: dealing with BitCoin is still very risky, it may have a bright future, some people are using some savings to invest in it hoping in the future it will lighten their lives, but average people are not ready to use BitCoin for daily transactions.
Which again also prove the point that BitCoin is being treated as metal BUT not cash money which the later was the main Point of BitCoin. Banks don't put metal (Gold) in your checking account but they put Cash money.

Banks dont need to come up with anything here. Its Bitcoins, not Bankcoin. What the hell are you even talking about that banks need to come up "with a completely safe way" and "now that major banks are slowly dropping Bitcoin accounts"?

According to my list, there are only 2 left after my guess today.

I see it's on shorena's list already.  I wonder if the number was picked up through the post # possibly?

730

I made the list by hand Smiley

Crazy I know, but that might explain why there are numbers on the list that have not been guessed.

To be honest, I am not so optimistic...

Why bother with the hash and several days (weeks even?) updating this just to vanish?
