Its funny I thought dell and copaqs were in banks, as I had worked in the corporate environment, usually IBM Thinkpads were used for top executives as a portable way to take there work home, oh well I guess they wont trust anything that is American branded, Thanks US gov for putting the trust back in the world

You guys are right. But let's look at the bigger picture here. It's not about what US says anymore. Even if US wants to stop China from becoming an economic superpower, they can't. In fact, many US companies are ACTIVELY involved in investing in China to make a profit. China also has bought ALOT of US government debts.

"China stepped up its purchases of U.S. government debt late last year, increasing its holdings of Treasurys to an all-time record of $1.317 trillion in November, government data released this week revealed."

http://www.foxbusiness.com/economy-policy/2014/01/16/china-now-owns-record-1317t-us-government-debt/

To put this into perspective, one trillion is one million million, with 12 zeroes. = 1, 000, 000, 000, 000. US has 320 million population = 320, 000, 000. This means that every single US citizen including the babies owes China 1.317trillion usd/320million people = 4115.63 USD/person.

It's very hard to fight a country that has bought so much of your debts, isn't it?

Also Washington has recently stop its financial support for Thailand due to political issue in this country and their failure to reset a civil government.

It should be noted that Thailand did not involved positively in the south china sea issue with China. This political issue should be Asian vs China but it apparently is Philippine + Vietnam vs China. Not a smart move at all. All Asian countries should see their interest in this sea. It also shows that there nothing such as union in this region.

So the withdraw of Washington from Thailand may open opportunities of stronger support to US traditional ally Philippine and maybe new situational ally Vietnam.

Wasn't there a news story awhile back about Russia erasing 95% worth of debt that was owed by North Korea (around 10$ billion) in order to facilitate the building of a gas pipeline to South Korea?

Seems like Russia is trying to diversify its portfolio by moving their business away from Europe and towards buyers in Asia.

Sigh. What a much better world it would be if economics are not dictated by world politics! Imagine how easy and much more beneficial would it be for people to be able to sell their resources to the highest bidder without the fear of political backlash

yeah Bryant might be right about that part
It is clear that all these sanctions imposed on countries such as North Korea, Egypt and Russia are only hurting the world economy and the innocent civilians of these respective countries who had no say in the decisions of their political elite

This is an agreement where China agrees to BUY natural gas from Russia. It is just a case of Russia losing business from the western countries due to the Ukrainian conflict and looking to sell the business that was lost to China to compensate their losses
yeah this is why after 10 years of fighting over prices, Russia finally agreed on a lower price. Because they know if they don't accept, they don't really have anyone rich enough left to sell their gases to due to the lack of political allies.
Actually, I think the Chinese acted smart here.
The Chinese saw an opportunity to take advantage due to Russia's economy being in trouble over the Ukrainian conflict and took the opportunity to make a profit. So congrats to them I guess.
Also China is using too many fossil fuels. The air in their cities are too polluted. They should switch to clean energy or there will be no planet left for them to 'rise up to number 1' in 5-7 years time.

$400 billion gasoline agreement – Congrats China
Too many articles on how Putin has played the West, yet this agreement also is a new punch of China to the East and the whole world as well.
Not many people believe that the oil rig China recently deployed in Asian Sea (popularly known as South China Sea), which is accompanied by many “government vessels“ (if not army ships), may find some oil in that area. But somehow, not surprisingly, the oil rig helped China to find gas at good price from Russia.
A strong sign was sent before Putin’s visit: supply from Russia is not the only option Beijing may have (in fact it seems the only one, just in my own opinion). Beijing is ready to find their own energy supply from the south at any price. And attach to Vietnamese coastal security ships is just a start.
Beijing has its gas supply agreement for 30 years, what is next?

if only make thread accessible to members when they become a member that would be good, lending and gambling threads, they shouldnt be allowed to start topics there.  also will keep new casinos showing up advertising instead of earning the community and getting involved first also it can force them to buy advertising for theymos, So theymos might be good for you as well.

This thread mostly ignores the idea that there is a significant difference between the majority of 'illegals' and 'criminals arrested for crimes other than illegal immigration'.
1075  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Education is a right or is more like a priveledge on: May 21, 2014, 10:39:39 PM
To a degree. It's just the bar will be raised for society as a whole. But since a greater percentage of the population will be better educated and more productive, society is raised up as a whole. And then we learn more, and we learn how to educate better. Someday kids in grade 1 who are learning addition right now will instead be learning devision, and graduate school engineering will be taught in high school. And the cycle can continue. Imagine what the individual can do with more knowledge. Then imagine that a country will be like if everyone had that additional knowledge.
1076  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Education is a right or is more like a priveledge on: May 21, 2014, 10:24:31 PM
We need hardcore education finance reform, IMO that should have come before healthcare (insurance) reform. The future leaders of this country are largely indentured servants to the banking system. I'm pretty conservative fiscally and student loans really disgust me. I don't think education (past high school) is a right. I do think student loan interest shouldn't accrue until after graduation and it should be tied to the 10 year treasure note rate.
1077  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Education is a right or is more like a priveledge on: May 21, 2014, 10:17:54 PM
I am sure all those engineers involved with the appollo missions dropped out of middle school.
All of the Mars rover programs were developed and are run by the JPL, which is a devision of the California Institute of Technology, a private university.

Just about all of them have PhD's. Many of them from CIT.
Example: http://marsrover.nasa.gov/people/

Bottom line is if you want a country to compete with the rest of the world, you need education as a right. It's one of the very few self-serving rights you give someone.
You're using an exception to prove the rule here. Part of the problem with our education system is tuition. Should tuition to the engineering program of a university cost as much as a Philosophy degree? Should everyone have free access to engineering degrees (because they're self serving) and the liberal arts degrees cost more above that?
1078  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Education is a right or is more like a priveledge on: May 21, 2014, 10:12:29 PM
NASA has no space capabilities anymore. While they still have a huge budget, they are dependent on Russia for primary stage lift rockets. Absent those, the largest vehicle they can fly is a paper airplane off the roof of the shuttle assembly building...
Fact: mars rover program was developed, engineered and operated by 8th grade dropouts.
Fact: Primary rocket engines on the Apollo class rocket that launched the Rover to Mars were obtained from Russia.

Fact: you can build one hell of a car, but without having wheels and tires, it might as well be be a 1972 Chevy pickup up on blocks in someones back yard.

1080  Other / Politics & Society / Re: what is your political preference? on: May 20, 2014, 07:42:50 PM
I see politics as business as so far seeing how politicians act
Why do you think what politicians do when they run for candidacy? They treat politics as a business. I mean other than money, since that one is an obvious reason. Do you think there will ever be a politician who doesn't care about how much money he'll make and would actually run to serve the people?
you knoww there are people out there who become politicians just to serve the people, but people of this breed is very rare. even For better or worse, holding political office is still the best way to affect change in the society. This aspect alone is a pull factor for idealists who envision a better country for future generations to become politicians. Unfortunately, due to the power that one might eventually hold as a Minister or whatnot, this path attracts far more people who are self-serving, greedy and ruthless.
