10701  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: New BFL update. 25 February 2013. on: February 26, 2013, 07:29:27 AM

Are you sure you don't have it backwards?

Quote
We have changed our bumping facility from the left coast to the right coast (North Carolina),

Unless one's looking at a map of the US from, let's say Oz, the left coast butts up to the Pacific Ocean like California does, and the right coast butts up to the Atlantic Ocean like North Carolina does.

I likely do Phinn, there've been so many changes I've lost track.

Josh has been sucked into giving an estimated shipping date yet again.  Saturday 9 March.

https://forums.butterflylabs.com/bfl-forum-miscellaneous/1163-february-25th-2012-update-discussion-thread-2.html#post16081

It would have been better to refrain from giving an estimated shipping date until testing and packaging are complete.

Now people are going to start asking how many of each unit are going to be in the (reduced) Batch 1, when they're going to get an email about their preferred shipping method, when they should send back their FPGAs, and all that other shit all over again.

Sometimes I feel like I'm a character trapped in a developing screenplay with the working title One Flew Over the Butterfly Net written in the unreliable narrative voice.
10702  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: New BFL update. 25 February 2013. on: February 26, 2013, 06:05:40 AM

I can't tell a customer of mine that their barn wood will be on time even if I have to go to the barn to accelerate the process, when my subcontractor supplier doesn't let me know which barn he's procuring the barn wood from.

It sounds like they do know which bumping facility is involved, though, as they made the choice to switch from one in North Carolina to one in California.  While it sounds like there's a hell of a communication breakdown, it also sounds like BFL "didn't know what they didn't know".

There's not really any reason for the packaging facility to assume their client has never heard of a blank alignment wafer and won't be supplying one.  It's possible that the first either the packaging facility or the bumping facility learned about that was when the wafers arrived at the bumping facility.  It's like trying to hurry up the printers when you failed to supply them with the artwork for your job.  Now is the time to make sure that they know exactly what is needed for the remaining steps so they're not delayed by something BFL didn't take into account.

Are you sure you don't have it backwards?

From I will leave for the bumping facility, to I will be meeting with them, to we are not in contact with them (I assume implying third party contractor).

From what Josh has posted, it's the packaging facility which is dealing with the bumping facility.  Changing the bumping facility quite late in the game might have created issues, too.  It's not like all these facilities sit around doing nothing all week just hoping for piddly little rush orders to come in.  BFL might be a large vendor in a very small pond but they're a tiny little fish in the massive customer ocean.

You are absolutely correct, although the key word is although:

We had expected the bumping to be done by now, as per the previous update(s). That has not been completed yet. There are a number of reasons why this is the case, and we are not pleased with any of them. The bumping facility, which we have no direct contact with, did not complete the NRE on the timeline we had spoke to the packaging facility about.

Week of January 26th

* Leave for fab/bumping facility at the end of the week
* KC facility starts assembly process of units to drop PCB into Units being prepped!

Quote
We have changed our bumping facility from the left coast to the right coast (North Carolina), so we may have the 6 wafers overnighted via courier to the bumping facility vs me picking them up and couriering them myself, although I will be meeting them at the bumping facility and making sure they don't sit around for a couple days while some guy eats and egg salad sandwich and wonders why there's a "priority!" box on his desk.

From I will leave for the bumping facility, to I will be meeting with them, to we are not in contact with them (I assume implying third party contractor).

Sorry, Josh, but a minor diss here, bud. Look forward to clarification.

10705  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: 20 reasons because Tom/Cablepair is a scammer. on: February 26, 2013, 04:00:25 AM
Reason #21: http://www.dol.gov/dol/topic/youthlabor/exemptionsFLSA.htm

Quote
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) provides for certain exemptions. Minors under age 16 working in a business solely owned or operated by their parents or by persons standing in place of their parents, can work any time of day and for any number of hours. However, parents are prohibited from employing their child in manufacturing or mining or in any of the occupations declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor. Other exemptions to the FLSA are detailed in the links listed below.

I am looking all over for what I read from Brian Armstrong about his previous experience with payments fraud detection at a previous Y-combinator startup, and am not finding it.  It was valuable for understanding exactly what Coinbase is doing and why they are flagging transactions as "risky."

But, as I stated before... if you cancel enough of the "right" transactions... you could make a fortune.

Possibly a great market making scheme.

I may be on to something, but I need more evidence...

Wouldn't somebody implementing said practice trigger an algo-heur?

10709  Other / Off-topic / Re: [Announcement] Butterfly Labs on: February 25, 2013, 06:39:55 PM
so anything new yet???

Things go bump in the night.

FYI: The ASIC Gods are making it snow again in KC. My only concern is that wouldn't this die off the locust larvae?
10710  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoins price can go up to $1million on: February 25, 2013, 06:30:40 PM
All you have to do is find someone who is willing to trade $1 USD for 100 Satoshis. Then we'll have a new high, lol.

I'll sell 1 Satoshi for $1 USD. I'll even pay the transaction fee. We'll set an all time high, LMK.

Sadly, there's probably scammers out there doing exactly that. A Flim-Flam man could easily convince a mark that a satoshi is more valuable than a bitcoin, and that bitcoins are only used by the earlier adapters, albeit at a lost. That is why all the earlier adapters are claiming to be newbies so they can purchase satoshis, because those are going up in value quicker than bitcoins due to the fact there are more of them.

The uneducated mark would think that the above makes sense, commencing the deal. They would then be told the confirmations take a little longer with satoshis, but the new and improved blockchain will make the process much faster in only a couple months.
10711  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: 20 reasons because Tom/Cablepair is a scammer. on: February 25, 2013, 06:04:05 PM
Quote
1. When you said you bought your asics would be ready in early December? That happened?
Not a scam - that's called a delay.  It happens in risky startup engineering ventures.

Quote
2. 2012/11/27 Tom announces the first delay. My last purchase you entered the first shipment was 2012/11/23 (http://goo.gl/itHPS). You think that at that time, Tom did not know there would be a delay?
That still doesn't make him a scammer.

Quote
3. You think that since the closure of the first shipping orders was a significant decrease in the number of sales? You think that's because for the people was very important to the shipping date? With true information sales would have been lower?
That still doesn't make him a scammer.

Quote
4. In a project of this size. If only missing two weeks should be 95% done. You think that happened? You think that Tom knew the delay, long before announcing it?
That still doesn't make him a scammer.

Quote
5.
my wife and I and our oldest son have been working long days to get this place ready.

Tom, 31 years (http://goo.gl/vSmYH) can have a son old enough to work? You may Cablepair/Tom, not the same person as Thomas Van Riper? Someone has known personally?
That still doesn't make him a scammer.  You're reading way too much into this statement.

Quote
6. It is normal for a businessman who moved hundreds of thousands of dollars. Advertise a sale of the company and a second delay while drunk?
Inappropriate, but doesn't make him a scammer.

Quote
7. Because Tom has not explained what happened with CAN-ELECTRIC?
That still doesn't make him a scammer.  It probably means he is busy processing refunds, since those are constantly being reported (see Fefox's post from last night).

Quote
8. Because Tom has not explained the refund process?
What's complex about it?  Chargeback your credit card or request a refund and wait - that's it.  I just explained it for you.

Quote
9. Because Tom has not explained what the Asian company that wanted to buy the project from Tom?
He didn't have to divulge it at all, but he did.  That still doesn't make him a scammer.

Quote
10. Because Tom has disappeared and gives no explanation?
Obviously he was overwhelmed by stress associated with the project.  He's also processing refunds as of yesterday, so I'd hardly call that "disappearing."  That still doesn't make him a scammer.

Quote
11. The Tom ASICs were real? There is evidence, pictures, documents, videos? Tom built something? 10%, 20%, 50%, 80%, 99%?
If I recall, the design phase for the chip was at some stage of completion.  Perhaps you could put in an offer to buy the company from whoever owns it currently.

Quote
12. I did not want to give me my money. I wanted my asics in December, although it could accept a delay until January.
So you cancelled your order once January came?   Then why are you whining?

Quote
13. Believe that the change in price of bitcoins has benefited Tom?
And if they would have dropped in value... ?  That still doesn't make him a scammer.

Quote
14. Those who have received refunds in bitcoins. They think they would have more or less money if they had the bitcoins in your wallet?
So, the unit was priced in DOLLARS.  Why is that so hard to understand?  You will be refunded in DOLLARS.  Yes, had you speculated you could have made a profit, but if BTC was $5 right now, you'd want your refund in dollars.

Quote
15. I keep in bitcoins leftover money to buy basics. Also I keep the bitcoins mined later.
That's great, champ.  That still doesn't make him a scammer.

Quote
16. I made a bet in less than six months would get more bitcoins, that I spend on basics. I do not bet, money back with bitcoins months later with a new price. I was not responsible for Tom incompetence.
You were an investor in a very risky business.  Many people in your situation receive absolutely nothing back and don't complain about it.

Quote
17. I have my bitcoins committed to Tom, I had the option to buy asics at other companies.
This is called "putting all your eggs in one basket."

Quote
18. I requested my refund on the night of 13 to 14 January. A few days after I value bitcoins Dave at $ 15. With that price I already lost bitcoins. Tom waited without consulting a price more beneficial for him. Why have not I received my bitcoins?
Because you're on a very long list of people waiting for bitcoin refunds (Fefox was order # 8xx, and if you ordered in November, yours is MUCH higher).

Quote
19. I don't understand why people thank Tom, after that will return less than 50% of their bitcoins.
Again, see the definitions of investment and risk and bankruptcy.  He didn't have to return anything.

Quote
20. To finish the last question. In September / October / November, without knowing the price changes of bitcoins. But knowing all that would happen to Tom had made the purchase? Why?
I don't understand this.

Quote
The problem is not the price change of bitcoins. The problem is Tom.
Oh so now numbers 18, 19, 16, and 14 don't matter?

Yes it sucks you're having to wait so long for a refund, but you took the risk to push out to January 13/14 when there were quite a few signals that things were turning south before then.  The drunk post apparently didn't scare you away - that was around the 8th as I recall.  Since you cite that above as "proof he's a scammer," why didn't you pull your chips out at that time?

Let me see if I have this correct. Matthew received the scammer tag because he caused people to directly and indirectly lose money, yet didn't profit a single satoshi from his ill-fated bet. But, another guy who also has caused people to lose money directly and indirectly, and even is now profiting via refunding with deflated coins, doesn't merit the same tag.

I don't get it!
10712  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why isn't someone at BFL cancelling and refunding my order? Son has Cancer!!!!!! on: February 25, 2013, 05:54:06 PM
You're in luck! Since you're in Canada, 70% of the cost will be picked by the government, and that's if you don't have insurance which most employers do have for their employees, therefore cost is probably your least worries.

Canada picks up 100% of the cost of healthcare.  The only costs the OP will have are medication, and losing income due to missed work.

That can't be, for if true it would negate the premise of the OP.

Color me confused!

All batch #1 customers in the same position. Waiting for comments from BitSyncom or reports from non-china users...
I'm Avalon batch #1 customer from China.
Hmm.. Interesting... You ordered from Avalon site, not from taobao or ali? And when did you ordered? It makes me think bad things about delivery dates to all others...

The Chinese customers are definitely not part of the 53 units that were shipped out of the country, but I believe I've read never made it out, which begs the question--where are those units currently? And when they do get into the hands of customers not in China, the shipping boxes should show signs of the hold up of sorts.

I have plan to travel all around the world on my DL

Let me guess: With a guitar strapped to your back putting on million-man-concerts in each city you reach.

You're in luck! Since you're in Canada, 70% of the cost will be picked by the government, and that's if you don't have insurance which most employers do have for their employees, therefore cost is probably your least worries.

...PayPal provides us with free payment processing on all financial transactions, and to my knowledge they do not accept Bitcoins.

I desire more information, read proof, of this. I was under the impression that PayPal gave a reduced rate to NPOs/NGOs, not zero fees.

How much does PayPal cost?

PayPal offers low transaction fees for nonprofits. Fees are applied only when you accept a contribution. If you don’t receive donations, you don’t pay. You will not be charged setup fees or recurring monthly fees.

Nonprofit transaction fees are 1.9% + $.30 per transaction for organizations with over $100,000 monthly volume and 2.2% + $.30 per transaction for organizations with less than $100,000 monthly volume. To be eligible, you must have documented 501(c)(3) status or you will not receive the reduced nonprofit transaction fees.

What solution is right for my organization?

Most nonprofits with less than $100,000 in annual income choose to use the Donate button, which is fast and easy to integrate into your website.

Donors will complete their donation on the PayPal website.
Your organization does not receive the donor's financial details, such as credit card number, so you are not responsible for protecting this sensitive data.
Organizations with over $100,000 in annual income who are interested in additional solutions, please contact sales@paypal.com or call (866) 837-1863

cancer bites.   My father in law is in remission from liver cancer for 6 years now.   The bill (estimated) to get us to this point has been about $330,000.   Not a disease for the poor.

My problem is I only make $53k a year, and I'm a single father. But I'll tell you for sure that being able to afford the treatment definitely isn't the first thing on my mind.  Cry I wouldn't wish this situation on my worst enemies.

Insurance?

This is a simply problem that should have a simple fix.

The URL https://instawallet.org should be set up as a landing page, populate with simple content and one button. Upon clicking the button, the familiar page, or similar, we now see would then appear showcasing the new wallet with 0 bitcoins, whereupon the newly generated URL will be the address of the user's new online wallet.

Currently, as it is set up now, there is no instawallet.org page one can visit. This simple change would take very little effort.

Problem solved!

~Bruno K~

The problem is not the experienced user but the noob. You could still trick a noob into believing that
<a href=instawallet.org/w/myAddressBook43>instawallet.org/referrer/Giszmo</a>
is a referral link.

Valid point! Then on the landing page I mentioned above, a popup warning box appears that has to be manually ticked (If you don't want to see this box again from this IP, click this box and exit). In fact, besides just the landing page, ANY page generated for the first time visitor via a unique IP.

I'm sure the above should eliminate a high percentage of the scams. Hell, there are people still being spoofed by fake PayPal sites, and I'm sure they're throwing everything in their arsenal to combat the problem.
