10701  Economy / Speculation / Re: #1 most popular Bitcoin Price Forecasts (subscribe here: bitcoinbullbear.com) on: March 19, 2012, 11:56:58 PM
Seriously, whats the purpose of that message, dear S3052? I expect that all subscriber will note that they has got the forecast.

It's a good way for a subscriber to check wether his subscription is working: msg in thread, no mail -> subscription not working.

someone mentioned that while it is seemingly good that they accept donations it would be more preferable if some of these companies or organizations actually invested in the Bitcoin community itself.
This could be a huge benefit but would have a major impact. Do we want these companies or organizations running the bitcoin community as well?

What are you talking about? This is not some big organization, but basically some aussie dude (a very knowledgeble and cool one, but nevertheless) and his friends making insightfull rap news videos. They need some donations for costumes and stuff. The best they could do in terms of helping the community is to mention bitcoin in one of their vids. The community is running itself quite well.

+1. When most people think "botnet", they seem to be considering only CPU power - but it is entirely possible that the compromised machines have GPUs - and if the user from IRC is to be believed, this is indeed the case, from looking at his hardware manifest.

Seems to me percentage of gaming machines with GPU would be higher in a botnet than in a sample containing "all kinds of machine", because gamers probably tend to run untrusted .exe files and point their browsers to "dangerous" sites above average. They might make up for that by being more knowledgeable and careful about security, but I think the first effect is larger.
10706  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Wonder who this solominer is? 88.6.216.9 on: March 18, 2012, 10:23:34 PM
I think it is most likely that an independent party has spent the money to make an ASIC farm, and found it easier to implement without including transactions. Becoming 20% of the network is about where you would find maximum profitability - if you doubled the total network hashrate yourself, you would only be earning 50% as many bitcoins per Thash.
Forgive my newbish ignorance, but depending on how they implemented it if a single entity actually reached 50% of the network with a cASIC would it not lead to basically the end of BTC? If you're a major miner you could look at developing your own ASIC, but the majority of the cost is already sunk for the 50% miner and they could simply churn out more wafers with the same mask. It might not be in the interest of the mystery miner to do a 51% attack, but it would be incredibly risky to sink hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars into a cASIC design when there's a very good possibility that the person who's already at 50% could disrupt the network before your hashing power comes online.

On the one hand, you're right. If I recall correctly, ArtForz once put it along these lines: Above 50% you're effectively competing against yourself. While it would not directly mean the end of BTC (let's say the >50% miner is benevolent), but it would probably make people feel so uneasy that the trust in bitcoin would deteriorate more and more, probably to the point where the whole things falls apart.

So actually what you'd probably want to do in case you have all the up-front work and cost of ASIC covered is to sell about 50% of your production at the highest price you can get and put the other 50% into your own farm.

It's very easy to think that you know what's good for someone better than they do, but you're almost always wrong.

You say a lot of insightful and knowledgeable things on this forum which I'm sure many enjoy, but this one, JoelKatz, should be posted in big letters somewhere everyone can read it.
10708  Other / Meta / Re: [Split] Bitcoin press hits, comments on: March 18, 2012, 07:54:17 PM
I would support this (a "press" subforum with one thread per item).
+1

I just asked Julz for his opinion since he's the top poster in the "press hits" thread.
10709  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Wonder who this solominer is? 88.6.216.9 on: March 18, 2012, 06:35:32 PM
watching

Goat, just click 'notify' instead of posting in the thread to 'watch' it

I just tried this and you must be joking, c_k: that sends emails! I don't want my inbox full of "topic reply: whatever"-messages. I want replies to show up behind the "Show new replies to your posts."-links. Any other way to achieve this than using "subscribe"-posts?

[goes to find out how to remove that notification crap]
10710  Other / Meta / Re: [Split] Bitcoin press hits, comments on: March 18, 2012, 04:36:07 PM
"better" in some sense would be a dedicated sub-forum "press & marketing" where all those news hits are individual postings and if necessary, discussions are below the respective ones.

just my 2 cents.

I would support this (a "press" subforum with one thread per item).

"Notable Press" is one of my favorite threads and I wouldn't mind having to check a subforum (I don't usually click into forums at all, mainly use "new replies to your posts" or sometimes "unread posts") if the upside is easier finding of discussion thread. How often have I wanted to discuss an item from the press thread and there actually was a thread for the item but it wasn't link and I didn't look for it (hard enough).

Thanks for the reading material, I've been hungering for books lately Grin

I can also recommend "Currency Wars" by Jim Rickards and "Paper Money Collapse" by Detlev Schlichter.

I bet this company here is testing one of their fpga/asic products: http://www.sevensols.com/

It's located in Granada, Spain. That's where the ip is from.

Hmm, Granada. Lots of sun. All the mountains around are full of windmills. Maybe someones making good use of surpluses from wind/solar?

EDIT: tried to read the thread, but it's too long. Is there consenus it was/is sevensols?
10713  Other / Off-topic / Re: A lodging of wayfaring men on: March 17, 2012, 10:39:27 PM
I just finished this book about 2 weeks ago.

I can't possibly give a summary here, too much stuff, but the group in the book is building and deploying a sort of darknet online blackmarket that also features it's own money.

It's full of libertarian ideas and has been a very inspiring read. Can recommend.
10714  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Rap News / The Juice Media accepts bitcoin donations! on: March 17, 2012, 12:43:55 PM
wow, BTC 56 donations already: http://blockchain.info/address/1ESKsNEfjmCZJt3yEYjdE31L1QKqnRVcmn
10715  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Earn 0BTC for getting shops/organisations to accept Bitcoin! on: March 17, 2012, 12:43:12 PM
Heh, this one's cool: Back in April 2011 I emailed "Rap News" (thejuicemedia.com)

If you don't know them, they make rap-styled videos about recent political/social stuff: http://www.youtube.com/user/thejuicemedia?feature=watch and I think they gained loads of popularity with their stuff about wikileaks.

I actually got an email back:

Quote from: thejuicemedia
Thanks again for your email. Just letting you know that we can finally accept Bitcoin donations!
1ESKsNEfjmCZJt3yEYjdE31L1QKqnRVcmn

Thanks for your support and for providing all that information. (Took us a while, sorry!)

they put bitcoin on their site as a donation option: http://thejuicemedia.com/donate/

just thought I'd let you know about my little success Wink

EDIT: this one is about the global economy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELEwjVRxxGE, features Ron Paul, Peter Joseph, pretty funny.
They are awesome! I came across them last year with the wikileaks thing, I didn't know they were still around.

Donated some bitcoins.

Turns out I wasn't the only one bugging them: here's the thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=69136.0 and bitcoinmedia article: http://bitcoinmedia.com/juice-rap-news-joins-bitcoins-struggle/ and wow: they received BTC 56 already Wink

PXE/NFS diskless

We need to talk. Smiley

Once I get some of my hardware setup I would like to talk about your PXE setup.

just search for "nfsroot", it's really quite simple to do.
10717  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Rap News / The Juice Media accepts bitcoin donations! on: March 17, 2012, 12:27:17 PM
They messaged me a few days ago about Bitcoin, saying that I wasn't the only one bugging them Smiley Niiice.

Hehe, it seems a lot of us mailed them and it worked Wink

Maybe they'll mention bitcoin in one of their videos at some point, that'd be awesome. Maybe have Richard Stallman in it: "yo, propritary software is unethical, we need a way to pay anonymously...".
10718  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Rap News / The Juice Media accepts bitcoin donations! on: March 17, 2012, 12:19:25 PM
I told them two days ago that I would donate if they put up a Bitcoin address. He contacted me telling me they would, and then two days later did.  Grin

Lol, I asked them back in April 2011. Even got an email back today, saying they accepted donations now. Well organized!
10719  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [COMMENTS] Bitcoin press hits, notable sources on: March 17, 2012, 12:03:59 PM
i wrote this once before: i'm for creating a new sub-forum "press" besides "legal". each press hit is a new thread, where we can discuss or bash it.

A sub-forum "press" is a good idea indeed.

I'm all for it.
10720  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [COMMENTS] Bitcoin press hits, notable sources on: March 17, 2012, 10:47:37 AM
I was quite positively surprised by RMS talking about bitcoin the way he did recently.

He's basically pro-bitcoin, but not for the reasons most people are.  I personally didn't see anonymity as bitcoin's main feature.  RMS does, and I think he might be right.

Apart from bitcoin, Internet paiements on internet rely heavily on strict user identification.  As a consequence, every thing you buy is known by someone, somewhere.  One doesn't have to be a conspiration theorist to understand that this is an unacceptable highway to an Orwellian society.

Long lives RMS.

I'm not sure I would say Stallman is pro-bitcoin. He said he had heard of it and forgot about it and then stressed the necessity of anoymous online payment. I'm not sure wether he considers bitcoin a solution to this. His bookstore example really is an example of anonymous payment. Buying stuff online with bitcoin is not, because of the necessity of giving up a shipping address.
