1081  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: December 29, 2023, 10:02:38 PM
CLN is great for privacy, using route randomization. So the payment algorithm does not always use the lowest fee or shortest route.
There is only one option. Both nodes only have one channel, and that is with 1ML. It doesn't make sense to blame the routing algorithm, because the only possible route is 1ML.

Because if not, then you can pay only direct channels from node A.
That can't be true, because:

- I have once paid my c-lightning node from electrum.
- It really doesn't make sense to call it a lightning wallet if it needs to have a direct channel with everyone you transact with.

I am not sure which implementation they use though.
Theirs. Electrum team have written their own client as you can see in slide 6.
1082  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: December 29, 2023, 07:03:51 PM
It is. Are you certain that the channels are open? Do you have a link on 1ML where I can see the channels?
I'm certain about the former, but not the latter. You see, both Electrum and c-lightning nodes are currently hosted from home, and since I have not port forwarded their respective addresses, I don't think you can request to open a channel with them. However, the other way around is totally possible. From both nodes I have opened a channel with 1ML.

So, no. I don't think you can find the channel links in 1ML.com.

I choose 18. Thanks!

And isn't this the difference between dictatorships and a free decentralized ecosystem?
The fact that you are incapable of convincing the overwhelming majority to switch to your protocol, lies on you. The fact that the overwhelming majority cannot be forced change is a property of a free decentralized ecosystem.

In a dictatorship, people don't choose what they want. In here, you are free to opt-in to any protocol you want.

If people don't want to follow they stick to the old one, just as people didn't follow BSV they might stick with the 1MB block rather than the 4x blocks.
Why are you afraid of letting people hose?
What? Seriously, what do you mean, I don't get it.

Complaints. All I read is complaints and nothing in action. The Bitcoin network is in a state where the arguments for change must be very compelling. It is like complaining why you can't push a giant rock alone. Extensive research is underway on second layers, recognizing that adjusting the block size limit isn't a viable long-term solution. I neither believe that the block size should remain at 4 MB forever, but at least that is tested, and is proved to be quite sustainable.

Again, I do not see the cryptocurrency space as an on-chain volume competition. Its intrinsic value extends beyond that-- aiming to uphold a socially resistant status quo against change. It is a prerequisite needed for money of that kind. Financial transactions are a second layer problem, rather than a main layer.
1085  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: December 28, 2023, 06:58:41 PM
- From node A, I have opened a channel with 1ML in testnet. (electrum node)
- From node B, I have opened another channel with 1ML in testnet. (c-lightning node)

- From node A, I can send about 0.02 and receive about 0.001.
- From node B, I can send about 0.03, and receive about a 0.001.

- I create an invoice of 1000 sat from node B.
- I attempt to pay the invoice from node A and receive "No path found". The log says: "electrum.lnutil.ConnStringFormatError: Don't know any addresses for node: [NODE_PUBLIC_KEY]".

I can pay node A from node B, but not the other way around. Isn't it odd?

The main problem is not how problematic is to get out, but how easy is to change that so you don't have to pack your bags and do it!
It is not easy. It never was. That is the hard to swallow pill. It is bloody hard to find consensus for a change in decentralized systems. Let alone, a change that will split the network into two separate. The history has shown that people will not follow.

It may be simple to your head, like changing a constant in the code, but I suggest you to confirm this assertion by trying to convince everyone to follow; they won't. Not because increasing the block size is inherently a bad idea (I mean, for some it is), but because they acknowledge that for a network of this shape to work harmoniously, people need to make compromises. Compromises like prioritizing the harmony over their diverse interests and perspectives.

We're talking about a system, actually you brought this up, and made it sound like in a decentralized world your opinion and your voting power means more than in an election...
I never said your opinion matters more than in election. franky1 keeps repeating the same soundbites for years now with such devotion as if he was getting paid. Does anyone give a fuck?

What I said is people choose what they want. franky1 might someday realize his behavior isn't effective. Repeating the same arguments as if his opinion mattered turns out to be a waste of time. He acknowledges that the Bitcoin network will never align with his perspectives and ideals. Instead, he sees potential in a neighboring network where the rules are much closer to ideal according to him. It is totally feasible for him to opt-in to that, and completely look down on us with his middle finger raised.

We shouldn't try to fix this as it's going to ruin our golden goose and everyone is comfortable with the $ rather than the utility!
If it wasn't useful, people wouldn't see it as a "golden goose". Somehow it is the most valuable cryptocurrency and least useful according to you. Perhaps people assess its utility differently, not based on the number of on-chain transactions per second. Maybe, I say maybe, being socially resistant to change outweighs the flexibility of handling 100x more on-chain transactions.

Just be honest with it, you care more about the value than the utility and that is.
If by "utility" you are referring exclusively to the ease and cost-effectiveness of on-chain transactions, then I can easily admit I care more about the overall value. I don't view this entire situation as a competition centered on the ability to handle the highest volume of on-chain transactions.
1087  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mempool Observer Topic on: December 28, 2023, 10:43:51 AM
the main reason why people are not leaving BTC is that they treat it as a store of value, and they think it has the best and most guaranteed chances of growth compared to any other coin.
Which is precisely why people don't want to make it a 4-year election cycle. There's a good saying that "making something social destroys the truth of it". Experimenting in the main chain is no longer acceptable.

People treat Bitcoin as a store of value. A conservative, capped, deflationary, boring, quiescent store of value. The rules are long set. There is no way you find universal consensus on the ideal block size limit. I myself believe that the limit should rise a little bit, but if to accomplish that I'll have to risk losing the aforementioned invaluable properties, then hell no. We shall improve scalability only on second layers, and if that isn't enough, then our next best course to an electronic peer-to-peer cash is a reputable altcoin like Monero, where change is more socially acceptable on a basis level.
1088  Other / Meta / Re: Mixers to be banned on: December 27, 2023, 10:05:52 PM
If I mine monero at a daily profit I am not money laundering.
Nor do I when using mixers.

If I mine monero at a loss and hodl it speculatively I could likely do it for 3 years before I have a tax issue and not money laundering but I would be forced to say it is a hobby.
I'm not in the USA, and I don't know how taxation works there. I suppose you report profit when selling coins? You make it sound as if the taxman will do blockchain analysis to tell whether your coins originate from illegal activity.

If I put coins in to a mixer in order to not be money laundering I need proof of full kyc
Unless you are not registered to a centralized exchange which imposes this policy. In my place, I use decentralized exchange when buying and selling. Again, I don't know how things work in the USA. Judging by the numerous malicious legislation presented by the FinCEN like this one, it wouldn't surprise me if exchanging decentrally can be considered money laundering.

You don't like the government, you're free to go
Come on, man. Seriously, that is your counter argument?

Here are a few reasons why you are not as free to go as you are in Bitcoin:

- You have a family. Opting out of the Bitcoin network can be done without even your family noticing a difference.
- You have a job. Opting out of the Bitcoin network does not mean you need to find a job outside your country.
- You don't have enough money to migrate. I don't think there is anything needed to be said here.
- Legal barriers like visa etc.

These are just from the top of my head. You can't really compare me the completely straightforward and feasible option of installing a client with other rules, with leaving the borders of your country for good. It's apples and oranges.

And no it's not superior because in a normal country you can elect  the government every 4 years, good luck trying to that with Foundry or Mara and the lead developers, put it simply in Bitcoin you have the freedom of packing your bags and go away if you don't want to obey the rules but no chance of you and your finds even with a majority managing to change them
What's the problem with migrating to Bitcoin Cash? Or Litecoin? Or Monero? The only obstacle, as I perceive it, is the limited number of merchants accepting them.

You still didn't answer my question...  You think vendors appreciate you sending them obfuscated funds from a known money laundering operation?
Merchants cannot expect from their clients to do blockchain analysis. To me, that understands to neither appreciate, nor disregard. Simply, neutral. Be it ChipMixer chips, Samurai whirlpool coinjoins, coinbase rewards; they all are acceptable, otherwise Bitcoin falls apart as currency.

Maybe I shall repeat it once more, just in case you think I haven't answered for the 4th time: I don't feel it harms the vendors.

Using a private protocol doesn't amount to money laundering just because it's private.  Isn't that your whole argument for mixers in the first place?
Blame me for not have drunk coffee yet, but what do you mean by "doesn't amount to money laundering"? Just because Monero is private by the protocol, it does not mean you cannot launder money. Anyone using it can be subjected of being part of a pool with large anonymity set, just as with mixers.

Purposely laundering the funds and having them sent to vendors is quite different from someone not knowing where their funds came from and spending them.
In a court of law this would be the difference between unintentional ignorance and intentionally obfuscating their source, which is illegal.
Two questions:

- Why is a mixer user considered purposely laundering funds but a Monero user not?
- Why is a mixer user considered intentionally obfuscating the coin source but a Monero user not?

(BTW, I completely disagree that a mixer user is absolutely some sort of evil prick that is purposely laundering funds.)

That removes the "intentionally obfuscating their source" by users, which is what makes using mixers money laundering.  This isn't fantasy, it's reality.
No, it is fantasy; an unreasonable piece of mind. Using Monero or mixing decentrally (e.g., Joinmarket) should be rightly considered a very intentional action of obfuscation the source.

I don't even understand why you're against making a private protocol instead of relying 3rd parties.  Just so you can get paid to spam here?  Relying on 3rd parties is against everything Bitcoin represents in my opinion.  The exact opposite of self sovereignty.
I'm all in for a private protocol, and that's why I recommend and use Monero and coinjoin. However, I do believe that someone might want to use a mixer for the pricing or the comfort that comes with it, as I have used them for the same reasons in the past.

By the way, 7TB can be a speculation to frighten people and make them believe that no mixer follows its no-log promise and they are all dangerous. Makes sense, right? But no one knows the truth.
And since no one knows the truth, the safest approach is to not engage in bareless speculation.

1095  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Does anyone keep an updated blockchain on his airgapped laptop? on: December 27, 2023, 06:13:35 AM
First is obviously the fact that when you say "cold storage" and "airgap" it means absolutely no connection to the outside world.
"No connection to the outside world" sounds a bit of an absolute. If there is no connection to the outside world, then how can you make and transfer transactions with it?

Instead, I'd rather say "being airgapped means incapable to connecting to any network". Having a wireless network adapter, even if disabled from your operating system, does not make a machine airgapped. However, being able to transfer text in the form of QR codes, does not connect my machine to any network, nor does it allow the network connected computer to infect it in some manner.

Plugging USB sticks back and fourth is quite hard to decide if it passes the test, because it does not connect the computer to a network, but it might be able to infect it somehow if the network connected one injects a malware. Maybe a security expert can clears this out.
1096  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mempool Observer Topic on: December 27, 2023, 05:55:58 AM
You know, depending on how you look at it and how biased you are , one might think of this like:
Do you really want to let people chose again what they want, like in a 4 years cycle elections?
Depending on how you look at it, exactly. In my opinion, Bitcoin is more important than elections in democratic systems. If Bitcoin was democratic, we'd not only have to agree to a particular set of rules but also be forced to use what the majority deems as right. "Screw majority", says bitcoin. You can opt-out anytime you want, and join another community, which is more oriented to your perspective on how the network should operate.

The people do choose what they want, just not in the manner of traditional elections. It surpasses that system. Unlike in elections where a government mandates voting for one of the presented options and obliges compliance with the outcome, Bitcoin allows greater individual autonomy.

Thanks. Code work ok then. It just a problem with this particular address. A lot needed to know about bitcoin internals. I'm heard first time about '50 non-spendable bitcoins of the genesis block'.
Oh, yeah. It is mainly encyclopedic knowledge, but it might seem strange to anyone programming Bitcoin. For some reason, Satoshi decided to not include the coinbase transaction to the global transaction database (you can confirm this by getrawtransaction). Maybe he did to not be called a preminer as genesis block was mined before he released the very first Bitcoin client binaries.

But I am currently under a lot of stress because pursuing investment in DCA method incurs huge transaction fees. I spent a day between the highest transaction fees.
You should absolutely avoid buying bitcoin with DCA at the moment, unless you're buying using lightning. I recommend you pay a visit to Robosats for buying and selling with lightning. Best non-KYC CEX for that purpose.

But aside from BCH, most other fork only join hype ride where people got excited from obtaining "free" forked coin.
I wasn't into bitcoin when the Bitcoin Cash split occurred, but I had heard about Roger Ver promoting it as if he was the main entity. Was he hyping it similarly to Craig and BSV?
1100  Other / Meta / Re: Mixers to be banned on: December 26, 2023, 12:27:47 PM
Why are you forced to use Bitcoin with ridiculous levels of privacy?
Because, according to you, unless every transaction is private by the protocol, nobody should try to enhance their privacy as that would "leave the unknowing recipient take the fall for their privacy". Which, needless to say, is a ridiculous idea.

If you want it to provide privacy without jumping through hoops or facilitating illegal behavior like money laundering, that needs to be done at the protocol level. I don’t make the laws.
Because... facilitating money laundering on the protocol is completely legal. Lol.

I noticed you didn’t answer my question about what you are doing to vendors and how you think they feel about it.
I already told you. Merchants cannot expect from their clients to do blockchain analysis, and nor should they as it is evidently inaccurate. Instead, merchants should expect that the bitcoin can come from any kind of activity, just as with cash.

If you believe that there should be no privacy in the world unless there is a universal consensus and enforcement, then you are the one indulging in fantasy.
