1081  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC-E crash to $150! on: July 18, 2015, 01:29:41 PM
can not be a true sell by a rational actor, as they could get a much better price by using multiple exchanges....so basically meaningless.

NXT is easier to understand than BTC.

You have a simple NXT-account that has a balance in coins, and that has things like assets in it, protected by a passphrase. Just like your internet banking account. No need to backup wallet-dat files on usb-sticks. You send from the account, you receive in the same account. No strange in/out transactions and return addresses for change, no importing private keys. Try to 'follow the money' on the BTC blockchain, its hard, it goes all over the place. One BTC wallet has several addresses in it, things like that.

I remember I found NXT much more intuitive after having used BTC and LTC for a while. Of course the default NXT wallet has a lot of extra buttons and features. Assets, voting, messaging, the marketplace. It can be overwhelming if you just expect a digital wallet for payments.

the whole local host thing (not sure if you still need to do that) is confusing for many.

It got a lot simpler. Run nxt.exe and click the new icon in the tray, open the wallet (in the browser). No more scary black cmd-boxes...

Also byt has many wallet and platform options that give is a ver bi advantage and can be effectively recast for various segment of users.

Yes, NXT is still quite young, there are only a couple of wallets at the moment.

The wallet.dat makes people fell they have wallet and ownership that perhaps the cloud does not convey.

Made me feel rather nervous, reading about having to back it up on usb-sticks, what if my usb-sticks gets corrupted, what if my disk crashes, \
The average user is used to cloud-services. Online banking, online file storage, online everything. All just a bookmark and a password away.

I agree the cloud may be more resistant and redundant thus safe and accessible (I like both). its just a file called wallet on usb stick is a metaphor to their own wallet they pick up, and it allows them to segue into the realm of cryptos.
1084  Economy / Speculation / Re: 100 bitcoins. Will I be a millionaire by 2020? on: July 11, 2015, 06:33:39 AM
Chances bitcoin will not die (as in, become insignificant) after 5-10 years: 80%

Chances of bitcoin's price being manipulated so that it never goes above 4 digits: 30%

Chances of bitcoin's price going above $10,000: .8 * .7 = 56%

Chances of bitcoin being a poor investment: ~30%

What happened with the other 16%? Well, bitcoin might be manipulated so that it goes up a little bit.

I don't see bitcoin stopping at $10,000 once it gets there, if it gets there. There's no reason for it to be so. If bitcoin becomes widely adopted, we will know what markets it will have disrupted. Will it be the credit card market? ecommerce? remissions? store of value? back-up against fiat currencies? Some combination of those? Whichever market it penetrates, the end result is that it should have a marketcap that will allow values far larger than $10k per coin.

That said, one very real danger, other than bitcoin fading away as a fad, is fractional reserve. Yes, "real" bitcoins cannot be made into fractional reserves. However, companies like coinbase or xapo or circle can operate on a fractional reserve, and if enough people trust these companies, it will have very real effects on the economy, because of potentially tens of millions of extra supply.

Given how many people in the world are clueless today, or choose to trust whatever large companies or governments they interact with, I think it's quite likely that potentially some large company can and will operate with fractional reserve bitcoins. We can only hope that it won't have such a large impact as I'm imagining.

what will happen though is only exchanges that daily sign addresses with holdings eg proof of reserve will be trusted over time

eg they say we store our coins on these addresses then sign messages etc, or move coins to address y.

So less than $ 100,000 USD in total has been invested in the coin excluding trades.
$1,007,095.70 USD has been invested in Bitcoin the last 24h alone. Still need to ask?

You always reap what you sow… always.

So you're arguing that having inflation of a over a million dollars a day is somehow better than a grand total of zero inflation ever?

That's a new one.

money into mining does not = money invested.

NXT is doing ok

considering when it was released, and the initial distro its doing very well.

NXT is a bit of a swiss army knife and its really good, but that makes it hard for a lot of people to understand

What if Greek banks start to print euro? 50 billion a month? Cheesy

As per the European Union rules and regulations, the National Bank of Greece has the right to print/mint Euro banknotes and coins, just like all the other national central banks in the EU. However, this does not mean that they can print any amount of Euros as they want. They can print only as many notes, as the Emergency Liquidity Assistance (ELA) allows.

but whats to stop them, I mean if  they want to print and they say scre the EU they can just print. It seems un enforceable

Just fire up the printing press I mean thats what FIAT does anyway via the banking system, this would solve several problems as greeks would have cash then and there is a mandate via the referendum.

FIAT's main function is bring capital and about together more efficiently than barter (thought its more about debt and stripming wealth / value from productive work).

So run those presses.

What if Greek banks start to print euro? 50 billion a month? Cheesy

this is exactly what  I thought whats to stop them doing this they have the tech I think to just print eu identical to any other, or could get it, and print their way out of it.

that solved the byzantine generals problem.
What if the cost of solving byzantine generals problem is more than a cost of army?  Grin

the army does not work at all unless you solve the byzantine generals problem. Eg everyone just hyperinflates when taken to fiat currency issuance.
1093  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Methods of growing your Bitcoin? on: July 06, 2015, 10:08:23 AM
the whole point of BTC, is there is no scamable way of increasing your bitcoin if private keys and proof of reserve are done correctly.
1094  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Bitcoin really unbreakable? on: July 06, 2015, 10:07:01 AM
you miss the point even if BTC was broken, then another crptocoin would swiftly take its place, and BTC core would likely update to that tech. Eg POS if miners failed.

So yes BTC coin as a crypto, the idea is unbreakable. Go and take a look in alts if you doubt this.
1095  Economy / Speculation / Re: $500,000 per Bitcoin, baby. The math behind it. on: July 06, 2015, 01:52:56 AM
Yes, it will take a while to reach $50,000. Many years.

But it will hit $5000 within the next 6 months.

A sustained $5000/BTC price would drive mining to attempt to consume about 0.3% of world wide power production.  That is a lot, but at least is it possible.

How much does the banking sector consume of world power, eg servers, atms, branches, minting cash, credit cards etc etc. I think that BTC can repalce 50% to 10% of banking finance sector at least. The Banking sector must be at least 5% and so will consume about 5% of power. This 0.3% is ok. Also mining as heating will be a very good using in cold countries as the power will be already paid for.

Having said that A POS such As Peercoin could take over at this point as it does not face the mining head wind

1098  Other / Meta / Re: HashFast cypherdoc bankruptcy scandal : Time to clean up bitcoin on: July 06, 2015, 12:21:42 AM
I don't see how any mining offer can ever live up to the promise.

Essentially the manufacturer, if they can even make product, will always switch on the miner and mine to the point of un~profitability themselves then send you your product in almost all cases.

Even a company sends the first batch out ok, will then really make a killing on the second batch, which they can now sell at a premium and have more funds to make more product which then arrives late. Thus arbitraging out their good will from the first batch.

Only those with direct access to fab shops and economies of scale can mine at a profit.
