I keep expecting to read about a class action concluding against Butterfly Labs and monies being awarded but maybe the company dodges it by going bankrupt?     The whole pre order thing sucks, I'd only ever do it through a credit card and then just use no goods delivered to get my money back which usually puts the burden on the credit provider or at least thats the law where I live.   Hope I would do that or remember this case in future but anyhow I dodged a bullet on this, hopefully people get some reasonable conclusion eventually on these shysters

Heres another favourite of all time: DOOM also a giant leap forward and they are still spinning off derivatives now.   People call it new but basically its son of Doom   (except games now are 10x larger but not always better imo, if the gameplay measured upto the graphics people would surely be saying Battlefront soon enough but I doubt it.  Sorry to be old and sceptical :p)

Just to state what should be obvious, there is a reputation system on localbitcoins and you can easily choose to just favour established traders.    Someone who wants to swap cash and has never been seen before is obviously quite iffy.   Its very easy to opt for somebody whose traded hundreds of times before and will be happy to communicate and answer any questions beforehand, its not really a benefit to them to risk trouble

That is not trading at that point, its investment and you have to risk that the loss may be total which is possible with anything.   Trading will sell at a loss as and when the original premise is no longer true, that typically a short term rise has not occured.    What he might do is consider options of some kind, which is risk but capped off to certain set gains and losses.  Total risk, never selling, hodl or however its put is step in the wrong direction except with really small amounts especially on a personal investor who cannot write off the losses over six years like limited company may

An unpredictable market would make it more realistic not less.  If everyone knows whats going to happen thats when the dynamic is probably false.    Seems any normal market is one guy trying to get one over someone else for a profit, thats plain simple capitalism and yet a useful price is found for all market participants and its still more positive then fixed or controlled prices like a government system creates

So long as most news is kept open and known to all then its fine, if theres any false accounting or giant reserves of bitcoins somewhere (or hidden buying as China has used with T-bills and gold) then we're in trouble

Good discussion and I agree bitcoin probably should be formed this way of settlement not literally every transaction.  However i dont think it'll be a reserve currency kept back in a vault.  Its going to be transactional if sucessfull as its not absolutely level or inert uneffected by economies like a reserve currency probably should be.  Im pretty sure Bitcoin is a velocity driven currency effected largely by its own users to find a value in its unbound adaptiblity which is great

Sounds like me, I generally dont buy till it appears to be a bargain.   Thats generally poor reasoning when it comes to markets.   The second 'suggestion' is market arbitrage which I think is healthy and it does have some risk to it but if nobody uses these coins it'd be very much a negative, its not a raffle ticket.
   RAffles are often done for charity, theres way more money to be made in commerce so I hope bitcoin is used, even if its bridiging two exchanges for a quick profit.  Those exchanges themselves are making a profit, distributing, providing an market to small partipants - liquidity as the big bankers would argue, so I figure its alll good

Its in the question, the definition of retirement savings would be you are putting most of your capital into that.   Its not a good idea to own just one thing expecting it to grow but the OP question was this, how much to retire

Its not quite true its just belief, they both have a use and unique characteristics to them.   People like to say well gold is only valued because its shiny but thats not it alone, its a few different things in combination and partly that its quite rare and hard to get hold of.    It doesnt degrade over time , its durability allows a young man to keep it and sell it as an old man and it still will be the same thing and in a world of computers and redundancy this is becoming a rare attribute
  Bitcoin isnt valued just from pure hype, momentum, velocity, speculation but it has its uses also and its extremely fast and divisible into the smallest parts with little bother to handling it which really aids a fledgling micro economy like the internet or like global trade where we have rich people in one country wanting to speak to, involve and transmit value to almost third world members in the opposite part of the world.   Even this alone, the ability to connect and communicate a trade over so vast a distance and gap between people is what helps make up the core of bitcoin value, any aid to trade so distant and rare would be useful and stand the currency itself as valuable even if nobody absolutely needs it just like nobody has to have gold

Because its not a certainty and it is possible for BTC to have no value.    Its fairly certain gold will go up in value, why not have alot of that; the main reason is gold is not a useful product (by itself) and literally it can weigh you down if price falls its a liability.  
  The same question faced people in the housing boom, if 1 house will rise in value then why do you only own 1 house, why not 2, 3 or more.  Really its the same answer, you only need 1 house and prices can fall for 10 years maybe and you have the problem of paying bills on all those things you dont need or use meanwhile.   Of course people buy too much, then sell altogether at a loss which is a main cause of longer low prices and price spikes.

Basic conclusion is dont over invest in anything and definetly not purely bitcoin alone, not many of us absolutely require to have alot so its just speculation or gambling.    If you are already rich then sure buy a few as pocket change for a rainy day, compound interest on mortage debt often makes that most compelling for average people

This is correct, if we are seriously discussing 20 or 30 years 'retirement'     Either bitcoin will exist at that point and be used, have worth exchanged in various retail trades or it will be dust in the wind.

If BTC really is being used in 20 years its going to be worth a ton, 21 million vs billions of people, even if only 1% of those are using it makes that system of worth alot per coin.   1 bitcoin will be all you need, I concur :p
