11201  Economy / Speculation / Re: How an EURO melt down will affect bitcoins? on: November 29, 2011, 11:43:47 PM
I doubt a UN world currency will be created if Euro fails.  I'm pretty sure the main reason the Euror is failing is that multiple countries with multiple fiscal policies are trying to use a single currency that needs a single fiscal policy.

Another reason might be that USD and China are in a currency war (not alone) inflating their currencies so that eurozone must do the same in order to minimize harm to exports.

Expanding the currency to the whole world would not really solve anything.

Right, it doesn't. Printing more money does not create new wealth, it merely transfers existing wealth and fucks up price discovery machanisms and free market in the process.
I cannot understand how we could be so stupid as to adopt such a ridiculous system that has failed so many times before.

Well, if we don't learn from history, we will relive it.
11202  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Technical Analysis on: November 29, 2011, 11:36:51 PM
If some commodity (bitcoin for example) has changed it's price significantly against some well established currency ($) shouldn't its trading volume decline? Because volume of 50 000 BTC at 0.06$ and 0.2$ represents proportionally different volume in $. It will stay the same only if the actual volume of the economy is larger.

Perhaps BTC exchangers should provide volume data in their other currencies? This will provide more realistic view in my opinion.

On bitcoincharts you can tick "volume in currency", that is what you mean, right?

slightly ot, but I just stumbled over a quote I'd like to share:

Very often people have figured out we are going to have a major move, but before that move takes place there is a huge counter-trend move down and it gets rid of all but the true believers.  That’s actually extraordinarily healthy because when it goes, it goes really clean to the upside....

dont know if this applies here, but I like the sound of it
11203  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Count down to Iran invasion on: November 29, 2011, 04:19:27 PM
Hearing lots of rumblings from military personnel that an attack is now imminent within the next few weeks....snip...

...snip...
TICK...TICK...TICK.........

Still banging the same drum ?

There won't be a war with Iran this side of the 2012 election.  Yes the Israel lobby is screaming for war but Obama won't throw away his slim chance at re-election for the sake of Netanyahu.

While I agree it's unlikely for something major to happen before the election, invasion to Iran would hardly be "for the sake of Netanyahu".

To quote John Perkins from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oARBdBtGenM&feature=player_detailpage#t=835s

Quote from: John Perkins
Because after all... what we want to do is control the middle east and control the oil in the middle east. And incidentally (I'm going to get back to Iraq in just a moment):
For those of you who think that Israel is about creating a homeland for the jewish people,... you're as deceived as most of them are. It's partly about that perhaps, but what it's really about is creating a surrogate fortress in the middle of the middle east. The Israelis are being used as pawns, they're being used like old armies used to use sheep that ran before the armies. They are surrogates. And their leadership knows that.

Just look at a map, it makes total sense.

Just to add my voice to the growing list of appreciation for this conference

Thanks most of all to Mitch for organising everything. The organisation was very good, and the whole show was very professionally run. It must've taken alot of effort to bring everything together for that final day and I'm sure everyone attending appreciated it. It is good that Europe is holding its own against the rest of the world in supporting Bitcoin. Congrats to Amir as well for hosting.

It was the content and the speakers that really made this talk so good. I'd like to pass on thanks to all of the speakers for their talks, all of which were very well delivered and insightful. I and I'm sure everyone else present enjoyed everything that was said, and the effort that was put into creating every presentation.

Highlights for me were the less technical talks, as I'm not too heavily involved in the development side at the moment: David Birch, Rick Falkvinge, Detlev Schlichter.

One thing which I thought very special about the conference was the mix of older and younger speakers - older and wiser talks from the likes of David Birch, Max Keiser, Rick Falkvinge, Clemens Cap along with those actually creating the new technologies like Cameron Garnham, Amir Taaki, Stefan Thomas, Peter Kleissner, etc.

I really hope that we can continue to hold the interest of all these very knowledgeable and clever people.

I think important to listen to the more experienced speakers. Whilst its exciting to hear about the new technologies and ideas from the likes of Amir and Stefan, it is fundamental to listen to those who understand how the 'real world' works.

Also interesting to hear from Detlev Schlichter, Max Keiser and Rick Falkvinge, particularly good to have them along given what's going on in the economy. I thought they added a very interesting additional dimension to the conference that would have otherwise been missing. Congrats again to Mitch/Amir for working hard to get these people along.

All in all, I thought it was a very thoughtful and insightful event. My only thoughts are that the venue itself was a little far out from the rest of Prague and in particular the Hacker Space where a lot of people went afterwards. It was excellently positioned vis a vis the hotel however. Prague was a great location for it aswell.

Well done guys for organising everything. Once again , an amazing conference with some great talks. Hopefully the next one can be bigger and better

Xavier

+1. I think this conference might be viewed as a cornerstone for bitcoin in retrospect. It all came together: science, entrepreneurialism, people, politics and money.
11206  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: EUROPEAN BITCOIN CONFERENCE 2011, PRAGUE NOV 25-27 on: November 28, 2011, 03:35:15 PM
There hasn't been much hype for Bitcoin lately. Are there any interesting developments to be announced at this conference?
Yes.
What were the announcements?

Max Keiser announced his crowdfunding film productions project (http://piratemyfilm.com) will be accepting payment of shares in bitcoin and also pay dividends in bitcoin. He bashed paypal rightfully. Max is now officially a bitcoin supporter, he loves it for its "disruptive qualities".

Also: Stacey Herbert now actually has a bitcoin wallet Wink
11207  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [37%] MAXKEISER.bitcoinfilm - Max Keisers Film "European Bitcoin - Prague" on: November 28, 2011, 03:24:28 PM
so, I talked to Max Keiser briefly at the bitcoin conference in Prague (the conference was great).

I think it's now finally public info: piratemyfilm will be accepting BTC for payment of shares and they will start to pay dividends in Bitcoin, too.

I think this is great news.

The gust of my conversation with Max is that it is not possible to enable my account to reserve more than 5 shares. The background for this is that he wants to avoid few people to buy all of the shares.

I'm unsure what to do know, but suggest we wait for the "bitpay" buttons to actually appear on piratemyfilm.com. Currently I think the best route would now be to give you people back your bitcoins so you can buy shares of the project yourselves on piratemyfilm.com.

Stacey Herbert and Richard Bluestein where filming material for the project in Prague (at the conference and at the pub(s)). They interviewed Amir, for example, and of course filmed the panel discussiond and Max' talk about himself and PMF.

It seems Max is now officially a bitcoin supporter (see his recent tweets).

Thoughts?

Something that is not easy to fix: I was quite shocked that almost ONLY male, middle-aged white were attending. It makes me sad how society is excluding women from pursuing tech careers and interests.

I'm tempted to answer this, but it would lead the thread off topic. This merits a seperate thread. If you make one, I'll happily let you know my opinions on this issue. ^^
11209  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: EUROPEAN BITCOIN CONFERENCE 2011, PRAGUE NOV 25-27 on: November 28, 2011, 02:53:16 PM
genjix, worldly, others,

What is your take (and the legal implications for that matter) on me publishing my recordings (or parts of them) on youtube or otherwise? Can I do this? If so, what license should I choose (youtube or cc)?

EDIT: I know you're going to use my and your material and the good audio to produce good videos of the talks, which will take some time.

Maybe it makes sense to publish at least some outtakes of the raw material to satisfy the understandable desire of the community get an impression of what the conference was about and what it felt like. For me it had quite a revolutionary feel to it... everyone was so excited.

We demand regularity of dividend payments!

I, for one, don't care much how/when dividends are payed.

11211  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: EUROPEAN BITCOIN CONFERENCE 2011, PRAGUE NOV 25-27 on: November 27, 2011, 09:33:59 PM

Did you take Max?

Hope you had a great time!

Nope, Max and Stacy just went back to the hotel.  It was good to finally meet you!

Same here, really ncie to to put faces to people Wink. I also heard you apparently _did_ have a great time, lol. Way to go.
11212  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: EUROPEAN BITCOIN CONFERENCE 2011, PRAGUE NOV 25-27 on: November 27, 2011, 08:57:00 AM
Hackerspace party is sick. The hackerspace is holding a party and everyone came here. All night long Smiley

Amir goes to hacker space and we go to the strip clubs.  See, Prague has something for everyone!

Did you take Max?

Hope you had a great time!
11213  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: EUROPEAN BITCOIN CONFERENCE 2011, PRAGUE NOV 25-27 on: November 27, 2011, 08:46:25 AM
Is there any press there, besides Max and Stacy?

There we're quite a few journalists taking photos and notes. One was recording the talks to audio but did not interview people. He looked like an old-school journalist from a newspaper to me, which was pretty interesting to think about when Rick Falkvinge talked about disruptions in "news and media" Wink.

A journalist from "Der Spiegel Online" (online-version of a major german weekly). Talked to him after at the brmlab hackerspace (nice place, thanks for cool party, brmlab people (they even had girls!)). Apparently there will be a small piece in the "Science and Technology" section of the print Edition.

The talks were recorded with one cam by Mitch and another one by me (and more). I gave Mitchell all my recordings (and will get his on request). The audio was recorded directly from the PA system, so the material should be good. Be patient, though, it's a lot of stuff and someone has to edit it.
11214  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: EUROPEAN BITCOIN CONFERENCE 2011, PRAGUE NOV 25-27 on: November 26, 2011, 09:18:43 PM
Max Keiser just concluded a panel discussion on stage, and I was one of the participants. There was also a lawyer, an economist, a banker, and a technology guru. it was a really great talk!

This was actually kind of the highlight of the talks for me. You guys could've probably discussed things for a whole day or two Wink, although there was a lot of agreement, there still seemed to be some differences, especially regarding economics (oh wonder Wink

Congrats, Tony, also on your great talk and thanks for setting that goal (1 million bitcoin users within a year).

11215  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: EUROPEAN BITCOIN CONFERENCE 2011, PRAGUE NOV 25-27 on: November 26, 2011, 08:48:24 AM
Hope you all have fun.

Yeah, sitting in the conference room a bit early, setup the cam and waiting for people to shuffle in. Should be fun.
11216  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: EUROPEAN BITCOIN CONFERENCE 2011, PRAGUE NOV 25-27 on: November 25, 2011, 12:35:47 AM
slush i'm at the hackerspace staying at prusnak's house. cya tomorrow

BTW i will be selling bitcoins since i need CZK. dont like to pay the scammy money changers.

i'll be in prague for a week hanging around the hackerspace. we're planning on doing a bunch of after conference events and workshops here.

Tomorrow we can pay for everything over the bar with btc using bit-pay in the hard rock cafe.  im sure there will be plenty of people that need btc so you can exchange some for czk

haha, it seems the conference is already generating some real life bitcoin demand here. Very nice to see this.

I originally planned to leave on sunday afternoon back to hamburg. Maybe I'll stay a little longer for whatever goes down in the hackerspace and enjoy...

Too bad I only arrive Friday late at night. We (a friend and I). It'll be around 23:00 at night, I guess. I don't know if it makes sense to try to meet up with people at that point. I'm guessing the Conference Center will be empty at that time? Where are you guys (slush, genjix, ...) going to be Friday night? At the hackerspace, at some bar, ...? Maybe it makes more sense to go to sleep early to be fit for a long Saturday... not sure.
11217  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: EUROPEAN BITCOIN CONFERENCE 2011, PRAGUE NOV 25-27 on: November 24, 2011, 04:08:36 PM
I think there will be few people selling them ;-). Only depends on amount, mine is limited to few hundreds USD (actually I'm selling mtgoxusd traded time ago for higher than current price, I don't want to sell at current price as I'm a bull).

I might be interested in buying some mtgox USD from you (I think it's time to buy). Would you accept EUR cash?

11218  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [BETA] MTGox websocket API, testers wanted on: November 24, 2011, 03:41:29 PM
No, I'm not coming to Prague...
(...dramatic drums...)
...because I already am in Prague!.

Would be nice to meet you, however I'm myself curious how I'll be able to communicate with my "fluent" english :-).

Nice. Hoping to meet you. Thanks for the generous token of appreciation you sent me Wink
11219  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: EUROPEAN BITCOIN CONFERENCE 2011, PRAGUE NOV 25-27 on: November 24, 2011, 03:39:08 PM
There will surely be lots of people selling them Cheesy...i know because i am planning on buying a few..

Heh, that does not compute. Just because you're planning to buy doesn't mean people will be selling (depending on price).
