[...]
As a scientist myself, it became clear to me that the contrarians were not capable of providing the science to support their “skepticism” on climate change. The evidence simply does not exist to justify continued denial that climate change is caused by humans and will be bad. There is always legitimate debate around the cutting edge of research, something we see regularly. But with climate change, science that has been established, constantly tested, and reaffirmed for decades was routinely called into question.

Over and over, solid peer-reviewed science was insulted as corrupt, while blog posts from fossil-fuel-funded groups were cited as objective fact. Worst of all, they didn’t even get the irony of quoting oil-funded blogs that called university scientists biased.

The end result was a disservice to science and to rational exploration, not to mention the scholarly audience we are proud to have cultivated. When 97 percent of climate scientists agree that man is changing the climate, we would hope the comments would at least acknowledge if not reflect such widespread consensus. Since that was not the case, we needed more than just an ad hoc approach to correct the situation.

The answer was found in the form of proactive moderation. About a year ago, we moderators became increasingly stringent with deniers. When a potentially controversial submission was posted, a warning would be issued stating the rules for comments (most importantly that your comment isn’t a conspiracy theory) and advising that further violations of the rules could result in the commenter being banned from the forum.

Is it as easy as that. We see so many false or unsubstantiated claims from the warmists in these pages and it seems fair to challenge them. However anyone who does challenge them simply gets written off as a denier and can often be subject to abuse.

Most "deniers" accept that Co2 is a greenhouse gas. Many just dispute the extremity of the effects, be they observed or predicted. Is that denial?

Well, I can tell that you don't fully grasp the matter.  So let me help out.  Assume that you were actually one of the Authoritarian Perverted Nutcase Liberal Controllers.  The first thing you want to do is control the language, so of course you intend to exercise your right to deem such comments Denial - in those cases where it suits you.

Such is the glory of powerfreakness.

Pope Francis’ Climate Change Encyclical Leaked Four Days Early by Italian Magazine
...
The 192-page document is Pope Francis’ first major teaching letter on climate change and its effects on the planet’s poor. Hailed by some as the “pope of the poor,” Francis’ linkage of environmental and economic issues puts the Vatican out front on a closely watched topic.
...
http://time.com/3921416/pope-francis-encyclical-leaked/

It is actually quite logical and effective to solve the poor's problems by killing them and/or making sure they are never born in the first place by killing or sterilizing their parents.

A permutation on this theme would be to use the power or the various powers that be to extort the masses in exchange for granting them the privilege of having offspring.  This has a financial component which can attract a more broad support base, and it provides finer grained controls to help engineer a more desirable herd.

These ideas have resonated with (mainly) left-wing thought leaders (sponsored by oligarchs who have more money than they know what to do with and wish to make a lasting statement.)  One of the few things that the Catholic Church had going for it (until now perhaps) is that they kind of rejected some of these ideas on moral grounds.  As best I can tell from afar at least.

A more realistic solution would be for the catholic church to distribute their enormous wealth into projects to eradicate poverty. But of course that kind of thing doesn´t fit the mindset of these fruitcakes,

The actual wealth of the catholic church is hard to measure and widely debated. But I get the feeling you're overestimating how wealthy the church actually is. The catholic church couldn't hold a candle to the likes of Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, let alone corporate entities such as Walmart or Exxon Mobil.

And all that aside, they've actually managed to make a talking point of how climate change affects the worlds' poor. Which is a good thing.

You must be kidding. They´ve been selling tickets to heaven for over a thousand years. Now; that´s value and the demand is endless. And that´s just part of the racket. Of course prices have dropped in recent centuries though, especially after they were forced to drop torture and burning at the stake from the sales pitch to the occasional reluctant customers.  Grin

Why, that's only a small blip on the history of the faithful.   I applaud the fact that the Popester has dignified the subject of Climate Change with his blessings.  Let us move forward now, quietly at first, soon in huge groups, asking that the United Nations help in this virtuous goal.  Onward, the Christian Soldiers must go, and ask that the United Nations form a Department of Settled Science.

The SS will protect us from the human weaknesses, such as falling into disbelief or it's evil cousin, Denial.

Face recog tech, RFID tracking – gotta love Donington Park

As if being ankle deep in a muddy field, surrounded by pretend hippies seemingly re-enacting highlights of the Battle of Waterloo was bad enough, attendees of the aptly named Download Festival will be subjected to a new police facial recognition system, and surveillance of their onsite location and expenditure via the debut of RFID wristbands.

The surveillance technologies are a new facial recognition system being rolled out by Leicestershire Police, and Download's own RFID wristbands, provided by German RFID specialists YouChip.

Leicestershire Police have been trialling NEC Corporation's NeoFace facial recognition system since April 2014, though they only announced the trial in July of that year, and seem to have been delighted with its results to date.

NeoFace has compared facial images, captured by CCTV/IPTV recordings, with facial images stored in Leicestershire's local custody database.

NEC, however, advertises its NeoFace tech as being able to offer much more in biometrics surveillance, and while the particular system to be used at Download has not been revealed, it may also be part of the company's suite.

NeoFace Watch is the mobile surveillance platform from the NeoFace suite, which functions by "integrating face matching technology with video surveillance input, while checking individuals against known photographic watch lists, and producing real-time alerts," according to a product brochure.

An interview with DC Kevin Walker, published in Police Oracle on Monday, revealed that: "Strategically placed cameras will scan faces at the Download Festival site in Donington before comparing [them] with a database of custody images from across Europe."

The Register has been told that the database of "lawfully held European custody photos" is "a stand-alone database of legally held custody photographs drawn together with partners in Europol".

In response to a Freedom of Information request The Reg filed to Leicestershire Police in April asking whether NeoFace had, or could, utilise information received from outside of its custody database – making specific reference to SIS II – we were told:

"NeoFace has been intentionally limited in scope to ensure that it only uses images held on our custody database. It is a stand-alone system that does not link with other national databases such as the PNC."

This is true, The Register understands, as the real-time facial recognition system is being considered as a "totally different project" from the existing facial recognition system that the coppers are using.

We have also learned that the Police Oracle's publication of the interview caused significant upset for management at Leicestershire Police, who did not want any advance publicity of their "new" surveillance project.

The public would have been informed that it had been placed under surveillance after the event had ended, presumably as part of a "you didn't know, therefore it wasn't intrusive", justification for the scheme.

Can someone clarify what is the "custody database" they are talking about?

Here in the US the way this would come down is they would claim they were just looking for the "10 most wanted" escaped felons, then in fact they would use it to arrest everyone that showed up that had an unpaid traffic ticket.

Color me cynical, maybe.  But is that the sort of abuse that is expected from this?
11205  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why do people hate islam? on: June 15, 2015, 09:50:54 PM
Ignorance. They know nothing about it and that allows people to fill the gaps in their knowledge with whatever bias they have. It's also true that all people hear about are Islamic terrorists. Obviously the jihadists represent a very small number of Muslims.

I don't consider terrorists as a part of any religion. Religion teaches to love and not to kill.

Which religion is that? Christianity certainly don't, and Islam seems to mirror it. Judaism has always been pretty open about being exclusionary in WHO they love.

Now, they do all talk out both sides of their mouth... "Love everyone as your neighbor, but stone gays and rebellious teenagers" etc, etc, ad nauseam

Really?

I think you mean something a little bit different that what you imply.  Because what you imply is that the Jews, The Christians and the Muslims stone gays and rebellious teenagers about the same.

And it's the most curious thing, but here around where I live there certainly haven't been any stonings.  Ever.  Even back when it was populated by Indians.  There may have been a few tresspassing fools of warring tribes or white men who were staked out in the desert sun on top of ant hills.

But hey, there weren't fire ants in North America back then.

11207  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why do people hate islam? on: June 15, 2015, 05:08:15 PM
Life is short. Eternity is long. People don't hate Muslim people as much as they hate the religion. What nobody understands is, why do Muslims like Islam? Here's what I mean.

Islam is a religion of works righteousness. The eternal place where a Muslim resides will be determined by how good and how bad the person was.

The eternal position of a Christian or Jewish person is based on the grace of God. God works His grace towards these people according to their faith in the Messiah, the Christ. These people are forgiven for all the things that they have done wrong, if they believe in the Messiah, the Christ.

The question should be, "How can Muslims keep from hating Islam?" After all, they need to work for their salvation. And they never know for sure if they have worked hard enough. But the Jews and the Christians have received FORGIVENESS from God. Jews and Christians KNOW that they will have a good place in Heaven.

Smiley

That's stupid. Have you read the Quran? Everybody prayers are about forgiveness and gratitude. Your answer is biased as you have knowledge about Christian religion only.

That's stupid. Have you read the Bible? Everybody prayers are about forgiveness and gratitude. Your answer is biased as you have knowledge about islam religion only.

Hey! That works too...

 Smiley

I'm just not so sure about any of this.  Because I have not had an answer on whether the Heaven of Islam allows me the bacon that I truly want.

Another false flag. We don't know about the true identity of the attacker. And from the slogans which he shouted before the attack, I believe that he is also from an Islamic background. And from the article, it is clear that the perpetrator suffered from acute schizophrenia. So it seems that the attack resulted from mental illness, rather than Islamophobia.
Well, someone with paranoid schnizophrenia could not be said to be acting from Islamopobia conditioning.

I mean, crazy is crazy.

But we'd have to extend that to Islamics who kill shouting Allah Akbar who are paranoid schizophrenics, too.

You contradict yourself playing a pathetic devil's advocate. Islamics by definition belong to the relevant movement specifically and act in its purpose no matter the mental condition, while random crazed schizophrenics are just that - random and without affiliation other than voices in his own head.

Dumb motherfckers trying to play word games always trip over themselves.

I don't know.  It just seems that if we allow an exclusion for true mental illness on the one side, we allow it on the other?  Please clarify your opinion on this.

Malaysian National Gymnast Attacked By Fellow Muslims For Not Wearing Head Scarf During Competition…

National gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi hit back at her critics over her sports attire which was deemed too “revealing” at the SEA games, where she won a gold medal.

“Empty cans make the most noise,” she said in a Twitter posting.

Meanwhile, Sports and Youth Minister Khairy Jamaluddin defended Farah Ann’s attire, saying critics should focus on the gymnast’s achievements instead.

“In gymnastics Farah wowed the judges and brought home the gold medal.

“In her deeds only the Almighty judges her. Not you. Leave our athletes alone,” tweeted Khairy last night.

He was responding to netizens who criticised Farah for wearing the traditional gymnastics gear that they claimed did not conceal her ‘aurat’ as required by Islam.

When her photograph was posted on Twitter and Facebook, scores of users criticised the 21-year-old Muslim athlete for not “covering up”.

However others came to her defence, asking if Farah should wear a robe and a headscarf when contending in the games.

On Wednesday, Farah danced her way into the hearts of the judges with an energetic performance to win the floor exercise gold medal on the final day of the artistic gymnastics event in Singapore.

I am here to just say one thing? Why do YOU hate people? and you should really give a valid reason not a shitty one that says 'Because Jews, Because Christians, Because Atheists'
and Yes, I am a people's person for those who ask, just tell me, come out of your shell and say why you HATE people like myself, and I could be here to clarify things to you, or not...
Also here is something that most muslims mistake about people's person like me is that "Christianity or Buddhism hate other religions" for this I say, Christianity or Buddhism does not hate ANY religion, but they suggest to 'invite' them to Christianity or Buddhism or Judaism, as slowly, and peacefully, even if they refuse, you can try and try, until it's their choice, you stop. and for all the wars that happened, it's because this other religion decided to come into war on Christianity or Buddhism or Judaism.

If you need anything clarified, I may not be here to answer you, don't be scared, I won't be offended by anyone, also haters, you can reply, I won't care Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Cheesy

In other news ->

I do not agree with you. No religion teaches to hate, fight or do anything harmful to other people, whether they are of same religion or another. Aim of every religion is to spread peace and keep a human being in order. Hatred is spread by some people and not by any particular religion. Respect every religion even if you do not agree with its philosophy. If you read all the holy-books from all the religion, you will find that they are more or less talking the same thing.

This is not true.  Many are the religions of the past which encouraged human sacrifice and/or the killing and torture of perceived "enemies," even some encouraged cannibalism.  Many defined strictly the geographical areas that were "sacred."

What's happened is simply that the more barbaric religions don't exist any more, so it's more or less possible to put the remaining ones in a "peace and love" category.  But there are lots of variations.

New York City underwater?

....
As one expert warns that in 2015 the sea level will rise quickly, a visual shows New York City being engulfed by water. The video montage includes another unidentified person predicting that "flames cover hundreds of miles."
....

On June 13, 2008, ABCNews.com promoted the special by hyperventilating, "Are we living in the last century of our civilization?" Unlike the 2015 predictions, that suggestion hasn't (yet) been proven wrong.

Even the Warmer scientific "consensus" did not ever agree with these claims.  For example the 2007 IPCC report.

The trick for alarmists to get away with lying is to put their claims of doom 20-30 years into the future.  Close enough that it would affect people and their kids, but far enough away that they can claim by changing your lifestyle now, you can stop the terrible nightmare from happening.

Christianity got started this way, with the End getting put further and further off.  At first they thought it was going to be in just a few years.  IIRC.
11214  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Reddit’s science forum banned climate deniers. on: June 12, 2015, 06:11:21 PM
Well, since the science is settled, there is no need for more science work.  There is, of course, a need for the Adjusters to move the numbers to what the Science says they should be.  Like for temperature.  And there is a need for Enforcers to get all the people to do what the Science says they should do.  But since it's all settled, additional funds spent on Science would be wasted.

That pic somehow reminds me of Roman Emperor Caligula. He was a total fruitcake and so crazy that he even declared war on the sea and the god residing there, Neptune. Had his soldiers attack and stab the water with spears. Nowadays they also declare wars on this and that, even abstractions like drugs poverty et cetera, most of the time with dubious results of course. And now Obama is declaring war on climate change. How not surprising.

The pix and the "winter is coming" meme are only funny if you watch game of thrones.

11215  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is it Time for Fast Track Atheist Security Checks at Airports? on: June 12, 2015, 04:29:38 PM

As an atheist, my beliefs do not make me a fundamentalist–in fact, they make me exactly the opposite. If I believe in anything sacred, it’s the scientific method, the rational way of discovery which insists one is able to improve upon some set of facts by systematic observation and experiment, but that improvement is probably still way off from any ultimate truth. Atheists are comfortable without knowing all the answers, and that is something that deeply defines us.

I couldn’t help but wonder if I really had to wait in hour-plus lines since no atheist–so far as I could discover–has ever been accused of bombing or highjacking a plane. Atheists aren’t attracted to terrorism since they’re too level-headed to believe they know all the answers to the universe. They don’t need to defend or promote strict ideologies, especially archaic ones…

This would be true except that a person hearing the question posed,

"Are you an Atheist?"

Might hear only what he wished to hear,

"Are you a theist?"
11216  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why do islam hates people? on: June 12, 2015, 04:27:22 PM

Check this:

Quote
But in the city and surrounding province of nearly 1 million people, around 75 percent of whom earn their living from tourism, it was hard for many to contain their anger at the security agencies.

Tourism employs millions of people in Egypt, especially in the Red Sea region and Luxor. If attacks such as this one continue, then all these people would be left jobless. Already the tourist sector in Egypt is under a lot of strain, as the number of tourists from Russia (one of the main destinations) has declined due to the depreciation of Ruble.

It is up to the Egyptians to decide whether they want to work in their hometowns earning decent salaries, or if they want to got to Saudi Arabia, to clean some Sheikh's toilet. Given the fact that the hardcore Islamists received almost two-third of the votes during the last parliamentary election, I don't think that the average Egyptian want to live a peaceful and prosperous life.

I'm starting to seriously think that some aspects of a fundamentalist Islamic oriented culture are diametrically opposed to fostering a modern technological society.  In other words, that Islam may chain people to dire poverty and ignorance.  Hell, the same might be true of any theocracy, but they are very rare excepting for Islamic cultures.  I understand Egypt is not a theocracy, but if 80% vote theocratically, it may approach it.

On a practical sense, a government must be secular to primarily look after the economic interests of it's citizens or subjects.

There isn’t a single fatal anti-Muslim hate crime on record. Islamophobia has never killed anyone. The average anti-Muslim hate crime is committed by other Muslims.

What about the isolated cases of people killing Muslims and those who were mistaken for Muslims (such as Sikhs) just after the 9/11 attacks? Do those incidents not count as Islamophobia?

The OP quotes the article.  The article, as I mentioned, is quite interesting - but that concerns the CURRENT WAVE of use of "Islamophobe" as an attack term for purposes of intimidation.

Several people have cited cases of killings which certainly do seem to be "Islamophobia."
