Right now the X6500 FPGA costs 610 and will deliver 180 Mhps.

I know some people here don't give a damn what ArtForz believes. Well, take this as his opinion then:

<ArtForz> I wouldnt be surprised if someone got 300Mh/s+ out of a S6-LX150

So the parameters of the calculations might change in the future.

300Mh/s puts the ROI at 26 months, which is really 37 months given the reward decrease. In many cases a 37 month ROI would be great, but there is a severe amount of risk here. That is the ROI today at today's prices and today's difficulty. It's doubtful this will hold up for even 15 months let alone 37.

And my main point is that as the btc price decreases, this ROI decreases too. People are saying that low prices are where FPGA shines, but it really just gets worse.

The argument is, that at really low prices (< $1), the difficulty (also part of the roi calculation) should drop significantly. It all depends on wether or not it really would drop at such low prices. I still hope we wont find out.

Ah, the mystery to me was that the photo in the first post showed the fan connected to 12V, so I couldn't understand why the fan was going nuts. Nevermind!

Not quite right either. It was a total fuckup by me. I put 12V on the 5V part of the molex. That's why it might make the impression that the fan is connected to 12V part of molex if you assume I connected the molex right, which I didn't. So the fan was connected to 12V via the 5V pins of the connector. That's why it went berserker.

I'm now feeding only the 12V (black/yellow) of the molex connector and using a (I think 100 Ohm) resistor that I soldered to the molex connector on board to supply (whatever Voltage that boils down to) to the 5V fan. Seems to work... any thoughts?

That resistor could be dissipating a lot a power if you do that, probably almost a watt. Unless it's rated for that, it might suddenly or gradually die on you. A better option might be to take the 5V from the picoPSU, if you have a way to do it.

I = 12V / 100 Ohm = 0.12A
0.12A * 7V = 0.82 VA

Did I calculate that right?

What happens when the resistor dies? Does it shorcut or does it break the connection?

Taking the 5V from the picu psu would be possible by investing more cable and soldering.

My version is still under development...

Wow. 184 MH/s. Awesome. Do you have a thread about this, these pictures trigger many questions in my head: do you sell this, etc.. Wink

Wait, what? Isn't that a single FPGA? Or is that just what you got for those lucky 5 minutes? If so, that's a little misleading, no? Wink

let me quote what ArtForz said on #namecoin today (I hope he doesn't mind, I quote him a lot):

While this is not a prediction, it says a lot (at least for me, it does)

Well, I for one will quit next week given the prices stay at current levels.
Absolutely zero incentive to keep mining at this point.

Of course, if difficulty drops to say 400-500k before christmas, a $4-5 price point will be excellent.

Sounds like a feedback loop to me. Regulation works.

Maybe this calls for acyclic action. Buy mining hardware now Wink

I sometimes see this on startup, too.
It did settle down, but still see it occasionally.

I'm not too worried, as the pool is reporting > 100MH/s (114 at the moment, 30 minute average) and Flexible Mining Proxy reports between 93 & 97 MH/s (60 minute average).

I'll test against some other pools later, but for now I'm happy to just sit back & watch the bitcents trickle in!

On another note, this happens to me at times.
I think it's triggered by usb action of other devices (when I plug in/out other stuff). I'm not sure how this comes about. Have to restart mine.sh, then it works again.

Just visited http://maxkeiser.com and found this video on the front page:

http://maxkeiser.com/2011/09/15/is-max-keiser-also-satoshi-nakamoto-creator-of-bitcoin-or-keiser-soze/

Havent fully watched it. There's clearly some miners active in the backround Wink

I don't know what to make of this yet...

Also ohne Beteiligung am Ertrag?
11570  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: tradebitcoin.com fixed (find local bitcoin traders) on: September 15, 2011, 10:38:47 AM
Is the thing still operational?

I signed up with facebook, but I'm unable to add my details to the map - when I enter my address, the save button only places a blue pin on the map and subsequently my profile remains empty.

I skyped the author about it.

The site is not of high priority to him unfortunately. But he's been helpfull before and fixing stuff. I hope he'll get around to looking at it soon.

I still think the service is very cool and needed.

ok, finally got the x5000 powered by the main PSU (220V->12V) and got around to posting to "Pictures of you mining rigs" thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=7216.820

Thanks. molecular, for the fast reply!

I changed
Code:
export LD_PRELOAD=~/x5000/usb-driver-HEAD-913cbbf/libusb-driver.so
to
Code:
export LD_PRELOAD=/home/myusername/x5000/usb-driver-HEAD-913cbbf/libusb-driver.so
in miner.sh, and now have 4 shares accepted at bitcoins.lc!

Getting quite a few

Awesome!

Code:
Info: Cable is LOCKED. Retrying...
Is that a problem?

Only if it persists. I sometimes see this on startup, too. Sometimes it can't "unlock the cable", I then use impact "Reset Cable", then it usually works again. If all fails, I replug the USB cable.

If you gain any knowledge about this, let me know.

I not sure why, buy my graphic card's cooler getting mad, when I'm starting this software. Same I had when tried to generate btc.

What? There's a built-in miner? That would be a first, I think. Way to make "free software" Wink

I doubt it, though, has anyone checked?

<MagicalTux> molecular: there will be more details in the future, once we can release more
<molecular> MagicalTux, is the reason you cannot release more some ongoing investigation or what?

It seems we're left with speculating for now.

I'm pleased to report that my X5000 arrived today!

However... I've followed molecular's guide, I seem to get the board programmed, but when I try to ./mine.sh, I get:

I think I never saw this in my test.

Two suggestions:
  • try the urJTAG tool. try to load the cable driver and detect the chain (whatever all that means)
  • try keeping impact open after programming, then before starting mine.sh, use "Reset Cable" in the menu
11577  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: MtGox 9/11: a wild speculation about what happened on: September 14, 2011, 06:13:12 PM
Could this e the reason we see all these hard momentum reversals. Meaning whenever I see the price take a large jump up it shoots right back down instantly. I thought it was people trading on stale information by idling on the trade page which isn't realtime i.e. has the price at the time the page was loaded. Mtgoxlive looks like a seismograph from the Island of Sumatra.  It doesn't make sense that the prie shoots up to say $10 and a second later some sells into a .50 fall ALL THE WAY DOWN. This happens all day everyday.

Compare MTGOX graphs to mainstream market graphs. They look nothing like this.

http://www.forex-markets.com/charts.htm

I'm not sure, but I doubt this is still going on. The effect you're describing and the fact that bitcoin market behaves differently from other markets could have other reasons.
11578  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: MtGox 9/11: a wild speculation about what happened on: September 14, 2011, 05:27:12 PM
But what is the significance of this attack?

It's huge, people placing pseudo market bid orders, ie limit orders with substantially over market rates, will end up purchasing the attackers over priced ask instead of all the lower but pending orders.

Not only people placing pseudo market bid orders might get screwed. Also peoples bots might "detect a rally", and just buy from the next-best ask (the one placed by the attacker) in order to be in early on the rally that seems to have a lot of velocity.
11579  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Custom FPGA Board for Sale! on: September 14, 2011, 04:01:34 PM
Hi there,

Yeah it's 12V input to the board and 5v to the fan for the X5000. Anywhere between 6V and 19v should be fine.

Without the fan the heatsink does get quite warm, warm enough to warrant the fan.

Thanks, Li, for your answer. *whips out ohm-meter and soldering iron*
11580  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: MtGox 9/11: a wild speculation about what happened on: September 14, 2011, 02:53:58 PM
Ok, it seems I didn't think this through all the way, as ezl just pointed out:

Quote from: #mtgox
<ezl> molecular: if you want to pay 5.50,even i you did fire a bunch of tiny offers to clear out the bids from 5.60 down to 5.50 (where your bid is resting)
<ezl> somebody still has to sell that at 5.50 in order for you to be able to execute outside of the "real" bbo
<ezl> so if someone happens to hit "sell market" in that instant, it'll push through, but oddsare slim

Ezl allowed me to quote what he pmed me right after:

Quote from: ezl
<ezl> basically, you can make bids disappear, but you wo't be able to buy unless there's a seller.
<ezl> and they have to sell in the instant that orders are being "requeued"
<molecular> maybe my speculation is totally bogus after all
<ezl> no, its possible that its still getting requeued, which would be really bad exchange behavior (i don't think this is happening though)
<ezl> but if someone is willing to just burn money to change pricing behavior for some other purpose (just doesn't like mtgox, wants to see bitcoin discredited, etc)
<ezl> then it'd be possible, if this requeueing behavior existed
<ezl> 2 ways to test:
<ezl> 1. get 2 accounts to post a same price bid for 2 contact
<ezl> then create 10 orders of 0.01 contracts that hit the bid.
<ezl> if each bid gets filled for 5 contracts, then your theory is validated
<ezl> or,
<ezl> 2. just create a ton of offers at some arbitrarily low price
<ezl> since you know the size on very rung of the ladder (via mtgox api)
<ezl> if the lowest price you transact during the test != the amount you should have to blow through to get there:
<ezl> mtgox is recreating the orders and they "disappear" in the interim
<ezl> however, i suspect they're safe on this.

So it seems my theory doesn't work out, at least not in the way I imagined.

I still would like to see some more light shed on this, which was the main goal of the post.
