The currency is NOT totally anonymous unless certain steps are taken you connect your reputation to an identify on almost all the current ways of trading bitcoin. With certain tumblers and what not you can achieve almost total anonymity but not absolute because of the traceable nature of transactions. It is you who are clueless if you think bitcoin is completely anon.
Oh, so you can track people through their wallet addresses? You can find out who created a wallet address and when? You can see how many addresses a person has and which belong to him? relevant paper by fergal reid: http://arxiv.org/pdf/1107.4524v1, should answer these questions. |

Uhm he confessed to an act that is criminal in the territorial jurisdiction he resides in. He decided he was a criminal. Most happen to agree. If I were Intersango and I wanted to scam 512 BTC, I would do it as follows. 1.) Abuse a known bug and claim it was unknown. This is unverifiable. 2.) Act as both sender and receiver of BTC and play defense for both sides well. This IS verifiable, so I'd hafta be good to make sure I don't eff it up. I'd have 2 computers side by side, 1 using my regular IP address and the other connected to TOR. I would go onto a chat and argue and accuse myself of lying, ignoring an error/stealing, and make it look like a genuine argument. 3.) Cash out BTC for USD and profit. 4.) Go onto the forum and continue the heated exchange for multiple purposes: 1.) To realistically make it appear as though this is a legitimate issue that is worth the forum's attention 2.) To create a false dichotmoy: Either it was my stupid mistake, or some lucky receiver is a criminal 3.) Gauge forum users' concerns and use their feedback to identify any holes in my plan that i missed 4.) Buy time to fix these holes. 5.) Laugh. I don't understand. Step 3.) is not really profit since it's his own BTC he's exchanging for USD, so no profit. What's to gain from such play? |

There's certainly room for optimization in the schema, especially if you have plenty of disk, which I don't. But before I go that route, I'd like to know what's possible with a server with 1GB+ RAM.
Well, it seems my server wouldn't cut it. Only 512MB memory. No swapspace (!!). I'll probably setup bitcoin chain on it anyways, because I want to make my coin-age graphs live, so then I could do some manual benchmarking to see if it could make sense at all. |

Meh, I'm pretty sure 'value' is irrelevent before the fact its 'property' (parts of data). Once its property, all the judge is gonna ask is 'whats it worth?'.
The thing is. The judge will ask not you. The judge will ask an expert witness, probably invited by claimant. The expert will pull out mobile phone check current mtgox rate and say "As of this moment this day and this month of year 2012, based on current exchange rate on leading exchange, which is 356.33 $ per 1 BTC, fair market value of 512 BTC can be estimated as USD182440.96". Numbers could vary, but you got the idea. "Oh, judge, wait, sorry to interrupt, value is as of now 179 thousand... uh, wait 183 thousand threehundre, argh, fuckit, it's about 1/5th of million give or take a couple of tens of thousands" |

Waking up to find 512 btc in your account =/= stealing/thieving.
He sold those Bitcoins shortly thereafter. So yes, it is stealing. Transactions aren't reversible by design - those Bitcoins are now his. You can't have it both ways people - you cannot have a system with 'no chargebacks' but call the lack of a receiving party to return mistakenly sent funds 'theft'. Any and all rsposibility, if any at this point, falls on the programmer who coded this, not the person who received the funds. This is a stupid way to think: "Oh, this grandma dropped her purse and it landed in mine. Well tought luck, it's her fault and now my money.", "This guy didn't lock his door, well, his fault, I can walk in and take his stuff, that's the physical world". Of course we can have it both ways: on the technical side, a transaction is final. But it can well be reversed socially by making a new transanction to give it back. If a friend lends you a 100-dollar-bill, the physical process of him giving it to you is not reversible. Yet you give it back, unless you are an anti-social asshole. If someone accidentially give you a 100-dollar-bill, you give it back, unless you are some anti-social asshole. Anyone who says "tough luck" or "coders fault" here, should go back to the jungle or maybe in jail. But probably even there, some decency exists. This is sad. What has become of this once awesome community? |
