But feel free to prove me wrong: how many of the thousands of different tokens that were created in the past years have actually solved a real problem?

Decentralized bitcoin trading
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5290331
For me, these tokens solved a huge problem. 95% of my trade is done on decentralized services.
Thanks for taking up my challenge. I completely disagree! You say the trading is decentralized, but the token itself is not. The first site isn't loading (on Tor), the second site shows there's 43 billion dollar on Ethereum. Wrapped Bitcoin claims to hold 140,000 Bitcoin. Their website shows "All WBTC issued will be fully backed and verified through on-chain proof of reserves.". There's very little information for a site who's WHOIS information is private. I also have a hard time believing Tether has 130 billion dollars on a bank account somewhere (and even if they do, they'll have a very hard time withdrawing it).
It goes against the very basics of Bitcoin: "be your own bank", "not your keys, not your coins" and "verify, don't trust".
When you buy Bitcoin, you know you buy a volatile asset that you and only you control. When you buy Ethereum tokens pegged to whatever, you have to rely on a third party. It all screams Bitconnect to me. What happens to the value of your wrapped Bitcoin when the guy who holds the reserves pulls an exit scam? It's a bit like having US dollars pegged to gold.  Until someone decides to end it and you're left with money that loses value over time.
Would you believe it if someone sells you gold bars on Ethereum?

- Ripple, which aims to replace the SWIFT interbank payment system with instant transactions and reduced fees per transaction.
Ripple is an altcoin, not a token (so it's kinda cheating to my challenge). I know it has some real life value between banks, but as far as I know it doesn't need many XRP coins for that. And it's centralized. If not many coins are actually needed, there's no justification for a 45 billion dollar market cap. And the recent legal scares made it all the more clear that centralization is not a good thing.

Quote
- Stellar, pursuing a few of the same goals as Ripple while targeting individuals with the goal of banking unbanked customers around the world.
Also an altcoin, not a token. Slightly less centralized than Ripple, created by the same guy as Ripple. The fact that he earned billions of dollars from his premined altcoins confirms what I said:
You got this completely wrong: tokens, like altcoins, ICOs, Forks, DeFis and NFTs, are solely created to make the creator rich. They missed out on Bitcoin when it was cheap, create their own BS, spam it, hype it, and due to FOMO and greed people give them their real Bitcoins in exchange for something that will be forgotten again 2 years from now. Then just rinse and repeat!

- Factom, wanting to offer a decentralized platform for notaries.
- Golem, whose stated goal is to become a kind of Airbnb of computing power. The platform lets users sharing some computing power and is based on the Ethereum platform.
- Basic Attention Token, which aims to revolutionize the world of digital advertising with an innovative model that benefits advertisers, publishers, and users.
- Siacoin, offering a fully decentralized cloud storage platform.
I don't know those coins/tokens enough to have an opinion on them Smiley

Is this the website https://www.fidelity.com/?
Fidelity.com is legit: Fidelity is a US stockbroker founded in 1946.

Quote
Can you share the website or social media?
If you do, put it in code tags or make it non-clickable. You don't want to reward them with a free backlink.

Quote
Fidelity is quite popular as a business, so there's also a chance you're using a fake one or a business that uses their name.
That's possible. If a scammer abused Fidelity's name, you should report it to them.
11723  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: April 05, 2021, 07:39:01 PM
Is it true that Lightning Network uses BTC values that aren't equal to their mainnet counterparts?
No. Any site I've seen uses the same exchange rate for on-chain Bitcoin and LN Bitcoin. Only fees are different, and that might include an additional cost for on-chain consolidation (I've seen a payment processor add 0.0002 BTC to the on-chain Bitcoin amount for this).

Quote
Does 1 mainnet BTC really ≠ 1 LN BTC?
No, not really.

Quote
Lightning would have been good, but I have one big problem: the value. 1 BTC ≠ 1 LBTC. Because of this, it is possible to lose a lot of money due to price fluctuations.
Lightning Bitcoin LBTC is a shitfork worth about $2. Maybe that confused him?

Quote
It would be damning if bitcoins on LN don't trade 1:1 (or at least close to it) against bitcoin, because that would impede people from moving their bitcoins to it.
If anyone's willing do to a different exchange rate in either direction, I'm totally okay paying half price for their LN or on-chain Tongue
11724  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: April 05, 2021, 06:27:46 PM
and then sent the bc1... wallet address BTC 0.01
That's about $600, a lot more than what I'd use to try a wallet.

Quote
as I'd briefly read that Phoenix is based on Eclair LN Wallet
As far as I know, both wallets come from acinq.co.

Quote
I'd paid 20sats/byte TX fee and not long later I discovered 999,000 sats had been created into a channel (The channel connects where to?  No idea at this point) with ~3,750 INBOUND capacity inbuilt into the single channel.
The channel connects to ACINQ. Click Settings > Channel list > click a channel to see the node.
That's a disappointing inbound amount. I'm starting to think it's just the closest on-chain input they have available for this, and anything above the required amount will be your inbound capacity.
I created another channel a with 3 mBTC recently, and it started with about 1.5 mBTC inbound capacity.

Quote
Another 24 hours went by and still no inbound channels were created, so I sent via LN (from a secondary LN source) ~2,500 sats bringing the balance just above 902,000 sats.  But no secondary LN channel was forthcoming.
In my experience, the inbound capacity occurred instantly when the channel was opened. It would have been interesting to see what happens if you sent more than 3,750 to the wallet. I would expect Phoenix to open another channel, but haven't tried that from a LN deposit yet.

Quote
However, when I went into the channel list I discovered a second LN channel has been opened but with 99,900 sats outbound AND ~122,000 sats inbound capacity in the one channel.
Those amounts are more in line with my experience. Maybe they didn't anticipate a 10 mBTC channel Wink

Quote
on reviewing the wallet address in mempool.space (their linked block explorer) I can only see one inbound and one out bound transaction cancelling my theory the other side sends funds to jointly open a channel then sends funds out to create inbound capacity
My theory is they open a channel, then instantly balance it so you get the required amount on your side.

Quote
which then lends me to suspecting Phoenix co-creates it's channels using your and their funds.
That's my assumption too.

Quote
Which makes me wonder just how "custodial" Phoenix really is?
The website explains which parts are custodial and which parts aren't. I don't really have the knowledge (or time) to verify it (I just use the wallet).

Quote
Unfortunately, as with the Eclair LN Wallet I seem to be in the same predicament in that as soon as the screen goes dark, the program goes into hybernation and the channels effectively go off-line (so I can't run Phoenix as a node on my tablet)
If it's screen related, an easy solution on Android is to set Stay Awake when charging. I mainly use LN to pay, so this doesn't bother me.

Quote
I also can't open channels to whomever I want to either
It's a feature, not a bug Wink

Today I couldn't send 100 sat from BlueWallet to Phoenix Wallet. But as expected, it worked by sending from Blue to  Lightning-Roulette, and from there to Phoenix. I've seen this before, it's as if the wallets can't find the correct route on their own.

No idea which bot this guy used, but it sucks. Added and removed some characters to make it "look human", which it made it look even worse because there are words in there that simply don't exist.
Have you reported the posts? It sounds like a violation of this rule:

11726  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Unconfirmed Stuck Transaction QT/Core / Network Synch Issue on: April 05, 2021, 05:12:25 PM
I have decided to go with Core but just have a couple of questions.
Bitcoin-qt was rebranded as Bitcoin Core, if you had any doubts.
Just to be sure: make another backup of your wallet.dat before upgrading.
11727  Economy / Reputation / Re: The shameful Romanian translation of Bitcoin white paper from Bitcoin.org on: April 05, 2021, 03:55:43 PM
I was asked to respond here, but unfortunately I'm not the best person to ask. I have no reason to doubt GazetaBitcoin's intentions or the quality of his work, but at best I could use Google Translate, which makes my opinion on these translations as useless as anybody else who doesn't speak Romanian.
11728  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Multisig on: April 05, 2021, 02:14:10 PM
What if i lost 1 xpubs. can i get acess to the wallet even if i have 2 private keys ? can i get the last xpubs that i lost?
As far as I know, you could use an old transaction from the same multisig address to get what you need (but I couldn't tell you how).

Private keys are used to access multisig wallets, the private keys can regenerate the public keys, so that is not an issue if you have the private keys.
For a 2 of 3 multisig, you'll need 2 private keys and one public key. If you don't have that public key, you can't move funds.
11729  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 2 Stuck btc transactions.. anyone can help? on: April 05, 2021, 12:17:29 PM
you're wrong.  this is definitely worth it.   i just don't have the funds.   I have about a lot of money locked up in roobet casino.  they won't let me withdraw until these two transactions confirm..  :-)    I'd pay $500 to anyone that can get these transactions confirmed for me.
Why didn't you say so Cheesy This makes your transactions a lot more interesting!

First: Are you saying Roobet.com accepted zero-confirmation transactions with very low fee, and now they're waiting for it to confirm so you can't double spend it?

If so: You can try ViaBTC's paid transaction acceleration service. It requires SMS verification, which I'm not willing to do, so I can't tell you how much they charge for it.
Google Authenticator works too. ViaBTC charges:
0d94cf61a6c3de650c9031ee332568ab5e7eba12482d0c94d8b7026fd5071cd4: $528
7957bfe67768cb28a057a5c48d2797f7f3098d7219ae9d7f93a7bd318b750992: $139
$500 isn't enough though.

Disclaimer: I've never used ViaBTC's paid accelerator, but I've used their free accelerator many times. Your transaction fee isn't enough for a free acceleration.

Then you should certainly try CPFP. It means child pays for parent.
If the receiving addresses are owned by Roobet, OP can't do CPFP.
11730  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 2 Stuck btc transactions.. anyone can help? on: April 05, 2021, 12:14:11 PM
Even if you get them confirmed, the outputs are virtually useless: 1944 and 3407 sat is barely enough to pay the fee to send it again.
You're consolidating dust/spam-inputs of 547 sat. You're now linking several of your addresses together by consolidating the dust (which is exactly the reason a dust attack happens in the first place). It's probably best to "freeze" those in your wallet and forget about them, unless you can add it to a larger transaction when fees are really low.
If you really insist on doing this, it's better to use native Segwit (bc1q) addresses as output and add as many of those together. If those transactions would have been in one transaction, you'd save half the fees again when sending it later on. 5500 sat on a bc1q address is a lot better than 2 smaller inputs on legacy addresses.

11732  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk Token on: April 04, 2021, 03:45:36 PM
the forum owns about 1250 Bitcoin.
It's 125BTC not 1250, right?  That's what I remember reading a few days ago, and I was surprised that the forum held even that much.
That 125 is on the donations address. Theymos holds 750 and forum treasurers hold 500 in cold storage. The addresses are public, see Forum funds.
I've just verified all addresses, the above amounts are correct. That makes the total forum funds at least 1375 BTC. That's $80 million.

“ this is your first large transaction receiving from a high frequency mining account and once you deposit about 4200 into your wallet, the 21000 will automatically reflect “
Rule of thumb: If you have to pay to withdraw, you're being scammed.

Quote
Is this a complete lie?
Yes.

Quote
I do not want to put the 4200 in my wallet because I’m suspicious of this whole thing. I’ve invested over 13k and never received profits although
Are you talking dollars here? If you've given $13k to a scammer, they're clearly back to scam you for $4200 more.

Quote
I have about 80k in my account with them.
You don't have an "account". There is no mining firm. It's a (scam) website, that's all.

Quote
Should I cut my losses and move on?
Yes.

Quote
Or is it possible the scenario is true?
Only if you see unicorns and fairies.

That was an expensive lesson indeed!

Welcome to Bitcointalk. There are many good things in crypto and on this forum, but your first instinct when dealing with anyone online and especially when related to crypto should be to assume they're out to scam you.

If it is already confirmed, the only way is to contact binance support.
Binance charges almost $30 to withdraw Bitcoin. I don't expect them to recover $20.
11738  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk Token on: April 04, 2021, 09:29:18 AM
"Forum" doesn't have to do anything. After all, bitcointalk already has its coin.
OP has a point though, Bitcoin should be distributed to members based on their Activity earned Merit Cheesy
Let's see: about 875,000 Merits were sent, the forum owns about 1250 Bitcoin. That makes 1.4mBTC per earned Merit and puts me at half a million bucks.
Serious answer: no, let's not turn an April Fools joke into reality.

That being said: OP can of course create a shittoken and create a system where Bitcointalk members can claim it.

Any crypto project planning to run their airdrop or bounty campaign must buy these tokens first from forum.
I've suggested before to only allow campaigns that pay in something with real value (Bitcoin) instead of tokens made up out of thin air. That didn't happen either.

Quote
This will give forum another stream of revenue generation.
The forum doesn't need money. I'm pretty sure Bitcointalk is one of the richest forums on the planet, especially per active user.

This will also prevent scam projects from running bounty and running away without paying.
I have a better idea: let's just close the bounty board Smiley
