11743  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Economics says that mining should be profitable... So why is it unprofitable? on: March 24, 2015, 05:43:39 PM
However, the reality today is that most miners do not make a profit - i.e. the above model does not explain why things are the way they are. Does anyone know the reasons for this?

.5 J/GH miner, 1 TH/s, $.15/kwh:

Daily Income: $2.87
Daily Expense: $1.80

Still quite profitable if you have a modern miner.
Your calculations do not include deprecation on the value of the miner. After taking this into account mining will generally be unprofitable unless you can properly time the sale of your miner.

It all depends on so many variables.  Electricity is the main one though. I still say home can mine but takes some things such as costs being low.

On the "mega" miners they are buying huge amounts, most likely that means a little lower cost since buying in bulk.  They also have the ability to follow cheap electricity and build in very very low priced electricity areas.

So yes both big and small can make ROI, just as a little guy it is harder.
The big mining farms can also sell their miners at retail prices before they cease being profitable which means that they need to mine for less time before effectively breaking even which means they lose less to deprecation as well.

Small miners  can also sell their also tword the end of life for that miner.  Someone with lower priced electricity, or "free" electricity most likely will buy it.
That is true however small miners generally have a higher starting price that they paid for their machine so they have a smaller window they can sell at - they need to mine for long enough so they earn enough revenue after expenses to make up for the loss they get on the sale of their miner.
11744  Economy / Digital goods / Re: How much a Bitcoin account worth on: March 24, 2015, 05:41:23 PM
I generally would not give any value to a newbie account unless it can rank up to at least 56 activity just by posting as anything below that really does not give you any real benefits (the posting limit is somewhat relaxed at this point however it is still very annoyingly high).

If you are looking to buy an account then the best value will probably be a high level member account. I personally was able to get .07 recently for member accounts however I have seen other sellers sell them for as little as .02 to .03 btc. If you were to make only a few posts over a few weeks then you could rank it up to full member status and get .05 per month on a fixed rate deal. You would be able to double your initial investment in just ~2 months plus you would be able to sell it for a likely higher price.

Low level full member accounts can sell for anywhere between .1 and .15ish and tend to be a pretty good deal for someone buying their first account and want to start getting paid to post right away. It would take around 2 to 3 months to make your money back with a low level full member however the value will probably have increased more over that time. Higher level (180-200) full members can sell for between .15 to .2ish however some people sell for less. If you can find a full member account with more then 220 activity then it will likely be a good deal if you want to flip the account quickly as you can probably buy it for around .25 or so at the most and should be able to sell it for .35 pretty quickly in less then a month when it gets promoted to senior member. Low level senior members will generally sell more quickly then a low level full member.

In the past and for a long time the floor for senior accounts was ~.4 or so and it wouldn't be difficult to sell a 350 + senior for a good .5 to .55 btc. Today low level seniors can sell for as low as .35ish but sometimes as low as .33 btc and the additional premium for having a high level senior has all but disappeared. I would say that you probably couldn't get more then .44 or so for a 350+ senior and probably no more then .5 for a 420+ activity senior. A senior account is probably the best if you post a lot (without spamming) as you can generally almost double or more then double per post then a full member account but going to hero status will only get a small raise on a per post basis.

I am honestly not sure why people buy hero accounts. Granted they are rare so you do have the prestige of being a hero however they only earn a little bit more then a senior account. In the past the floor for a hero was 1 btc although this has somewhat changed recently as more people have become heros. You can probably get a hero account for somewhere in the range of .75 to .85 or so although some people are asking for more and can probably get more, I would say if you can wait a little while then you can probably get a good 1.1 to 1.3 for a hero as there are few of them for sale. I think it is interesting that two of the three hero accounts I have sold are not in a signature campaign despite them all generally being active in the community. The one senior that has stayed active for several months and eventually got promoted to hero status also is not in a signature deal but is very active.

Legendary accounts are hard to price. The price I sold my only legendary account was inflated because of it being on default trust. It also took a very long time to sell at that price. Legendary accounts are more rare then heros and they do have the special feature of ranking up at a "random" time. If I had to put a price on a legendary account then I would say somewhere in the range of 1.3 to 1.7 although I don't think I have ever even seen a legendary account publicly listed for sale (although a few have offered their account to me - they wanted too much though).

If you deal in accounts then you generally want to wait until you find accounts at an exceptionally low price, generally because its owner needs money quickly and as long as you don't need money you can wait for someone who can afford a higher price. If you are publicly buying accounts then you can probably command lower prices because of the hassle of trying to sell your accounts. You just need to know what precautions you need to take to protect yourself......

Welsh has not been online for 5 days and his signature says that he will be on the forums on a limited basis until early April.

I am not sure what is causing the delay with devthedev as he should be able to confirm repayment via the blockchain and I would think he would have put a clause that he can return the collateral upon the undisputed request in order to prevent these kinds of delays.
11747  Other / Meta / Re: Trust spam happens on: March 24, 2015, 02:59:45 PM
I think that is untrusted feedback, it's all over Vod's profile too.
Vod deserved it, and you too kind of deserve some negative trust (for starting the flame regarding MSDN sales)  Roll Eyes But this is not the way how this should happen.
This is totally wrong. Admins would surely remove it Smiley

I got into it a little bit with Vod yesterday because I also don't understand how/why MSCORP intellectual property has anything to do with the bitcoinforum or why he's going around neg-repping anyone who deals with this stuff.  Why are people on default trust acting as MSCORP representatives I can't understand.

FuckIdolPlus, are you starting shit related to MSCORP?  Why?

(I'm not saying you deserve the trust spam, just asking why/if this is the case.)
He has a financial interest in Microsoft/Microsoft products. People selling Microsoft products at a discount will make it so the time he invested in becoming a Microsoft certified engineer potentially worth less

11749  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Sign Up and Earn Some Alts (NXT) on: March 24, 2015, 04:07:13 AM
Someone actually proactively created an account on there for me, gave me the account's password and told me to change the password as quickly as possible. I somewhat think this is a phishing site trying to get people's bitcointalk passwords as whoever is behind the site will probably be hoping that you use poor password management and reuse your bitcointalk password on their forum.

The person who had created the account for me was a newbie loan scammer, and I do know for a fact that onewiseguy is a scammer as well, so I would advise anyone considering to join this forum to be sure to use a very separate password from your bitcointalk password

throwaway account for obvious reasons.

Purchase method: cash deposit bank of america

this person should be fearing for his life at this point.

From the BoA deposit receipt, how can you tell what form of money was deposited (check, cash, ?)?
If you look at the receipt, you will see one line towards the middle that says 'total deposit to CHK then on the right the total amount of the deposit ($402 in this case). The line underneath it gives you some kind of date, it looks like it might say something like 'credit will post to account on'. Then the third/bottom line says 'available now' and if you zoom in enough you will see that it says $0.00 on the right. I believe the total amount of deposit and the available now amounts should match if the deposit was entirely cash. I also believe that your online banking should tell you how much of a pending deposit was made up of cash and how much was made up of checks

CITM was removed likely because of his ridiculously large trust list and then he announced that he was going to expand it further.

You were added because BadBear thought that it would be appropriate for you to be on his trust list.

I made this account to talk smack to Smoothie back in the Solidcoin drama days (not that I was a big Solidcoin supporter; I just liked playing devil's advocate). I could be as foul-mouthed and as much of a dick as I wanted to without tarnishing the rep of my actual account.
Bahahahah. Does this kind of shit happen often in the altcoin section? If so then I need to make my way over there more often

Me too, I don't like spending that much on forum software, better to safe it, no reason to spend it all, but the coins as of now are worth much more then they did when you donated obviously.

Save it for what? I'm curious as to whether Bitcointalk will collect any BTC for anything once the new forum is done. Its just a forum, what else is money needed for?
-snip-
I donated a few myself but not enough to get the special perks of donator/VIP. That's why people donated BTW. They wanted to help the forum survive and get the perks of donator status. Back then it would have taken 50 coins just to pay for hosting. When I donated the exchange rate was $2-5. I think it's stupid to overpay for forum software. I would much prefer theymos blow it on hookers and beer or have a huge party and invite everyone.
For hookers, beer and throwing a party for 475,204 total members

If you send any bitcoin to the OP you are certain to never see your money again. If the OP actually wanted to engage in this kind of "service" then he would offer to have funds held in escrow to people sending him bitcoin would be protected
11757  Other / Meta / Re: Remove VOD from the Default Trust List - clear case of neg for calling out abuse on: March 23, 2015, 08:04:33 PM
Just to be fair, you guys should also point out when people add me to their trust list.

My unbiased trust list (only DefaultTrust) has me up by 2 points since I left the negatives on the MSDN seller's accounts.

Overall, I do good for this forum, and people recognize that.    Smiley
I agree that you are a net benefit to the forum however there are probably a few instances where negative trust should never have been given in the first place, often times it then escalates to massive amounts of trolling when it would then no longer be appropriate to ever remove the negative trust, however the drama could have easily been avoided in the first place.

I do think that you getting removed from default trust might be good for you though as people would no longer have reasons to troll you and you have said before that you don't like that your RL identity is more or less public and people who you give negative trust to often post your name + baseless accusations that might make you look poorly to an outsider.
11758  Other / Meta / Re: Remove VOD from the Default Trust List - clear case of neg for calling out abuse on: March 23, 2015, 07:56:45 PM
Yes HostFat removed Vod from his trust list :

He actually excluded him from his trust list. However in order for him to be excluded from the default trust network an additional person on level one default trust would need to exclude him. Even if he is excluded though his ratings would still show up for a lot of people because so many people have tomatocage on their trust list.

I am not sure if Vod should be removed though. I do think he shouldn't apply such a liberal use of the negative trust button though.

Appearently   if you have a MSDN subscription (a free hundred dollars to over ten grand depending on what kind you get - or sometimes free if you can get a student discount) then you can generate an "unlimited" number of keys with no additional cost.

MSDN products are suppose to be used for testing/demonstration purposes only (for example best buy having their show room computers be able to run various Microsoft products)
