11782  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 'Homeland Security' To Purchase 62 Million More Rounds Of AR-15 AMMO on: April 16, 2015, 03:06:07 AM
Feds attempting to control the market, dry up supply? Purchase in addition to billions of bullets previously bought by feds

The Department of Homeland Security is set to purchase over 62 million rounds of ammo typically used in AR-15 semi-automatic rifles, just weeks after the ATF was forced to back down on a ban on M855 bullets.

A posting on FedBizOpps.gov this week reveals that the DHS is looking to contract with a company to provide 12.6 million rounds of .223 Remington ammunition per year for a period of five years – totaling 62.5 million bullets.

The solicitation explains that the purchase is intended, “to achieve price savings over the current .223 Rem duty ammunition.” The bullets will be used by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents nationwide for “training” purposes.

The .223 Remington is one of the most common rifle cartridges in use in the United States and is used both in bolt action rifles and semi-automatic rifles such as the AR-15 and the Ruger Mini-14.

More...http://www.infowars.com/dhs-to-purchase-62-million-rounds-of-ar-15-ammo/

Why?  So they can shoot any of their fellow Customs and Border Patrol agents who actually try to arrest someone sneaking in?

Smiley

Seriously, we could run a high quality training program - easily - with 2000 rounds per shooter.  That'd be 200 a day for two weeks and it would wear them out.  Compare this with a lot of police depts. where the requirement is the officer shoots a box (50) per year in training.

So that's 500 agents per million rounds, 12.6 million rounds would do 6000+ agents....somewhat plausible.  Of course likely they are not running a program recertifying or initially training these guys with 2000 rounds per man.

But the numbers are not orders of magnitude off.

Actually, the phrase "allah akbar" has already been hijacked to refer to gibberish spouted by a maniac in a pseudo-Islamic killing frenzy.

That's over and done.  That's what the phrase means.

Even I think you are letting your own bias and hatred color things too much now. You take something you have a one-dimensional view of and declare it to be a universal truth? Get over yourself a bit.
Universal truth?

I am only referring to the way the phrase is being perverted which is well understood.

...and declaring it to be the exclusive meaning of the phrase. Does that seem fair to you? (At least, it seems to me you are declaring that to be the case with the conclusion "That's over and done. That's what the phrase means.")
Okay, let me restrict the scope of my comment to something like "In america", or "In non-muslim countries" or such.  Obviously if a Muslim heard it he knows what the words mean.

But when a US citizen hears it in the context of foreign words in English, it pretty much refers to something a foaming at the mouth mad dog Islamic Terrorist HAS been reported to have said in the midst of heinous unprovoked acts.

I think this is closer to fair. But I am an American, and when I hear the phrase, I understand it's association with violent acts (especially to Americans who mostly hear it exclusively in that context), but I also know this to be a fringe use of the phrase.
Where I'm headed with that is that if I was Muslim I'd consider it a severe insult for extremists to have hijacked what are essentially from that world view, sacred words.

Then again as you mention from within their world speaking Farsi and such they may not even realize that has happened.

A question for bitcoiners into graphic design or with a taste for any form of art in general...

It looks to me like the Republican machine smashing through the two iconic pillars of Democrats, Bill and Billary.

Red = Republican
Blue = Democrat

Of course the only reason red and blue are that way is red was too strongly associated with communism and socialism for the democrats to stomach having as their own color....

I'm sick of people thinking religion is even an important question.

It doesn't fucking matter what religion someone is.  It doesn't even matter whether they find justification for what they're doing in religion.  What matters is what they do.

I would count it as real progress in the world if we didn't even know how many muslims, how many christians, how many atheists, etc, because everybody understood that the question was too darn trivial to even bother asking.

Same here. But I find this a common thing that whenever a rape, murder or terrorist case comes in front, people start finding the reason behind it and start debating on the religion/country/state of mind of the criminal rather than discussing the punishment for the criminal.

That's why I said on this general matter of ISIS atrocities "I'm through with the discusion."

In the case of ISIS I think that's the right approach.

......Here's a tip: it's not my job to go through your fairy tales to find justifications for your arguments. You're the one trying to prove your religion is so wonderful and perfect. And you're doing a terrible job.

It's doubtful any Westerner non-Islamic is going to go through the social code of the Koran and conclude it's "Wonderful and Perfect."  That's something a True Believer would say.

It looks to me like a bunch of basic rules conceived of in medieval times to force the illiterate and ignorant masses to obey.

I told you he is an islamaphobia. The problem with a phobic is that he only thinks with a phobic mind which is very limited when he thinks of what his phobia is about. So he can't grasp it and spread FUD. Unfortunately, that's what he is doing but I don't blame him as phobics are like that. Sad
Watching you two debate, part of it is watching the wrong ideas BOTH of you come up with.
And you have as many as he does.  Eisenhower the Mass Murderer is a pretty good bit of crazy talk.

Of course I am right on this, because the only time I was wrong was when I doubted I was right.

That makes my point even more effectively. You cant have a scientific community populated by people who will consider AGW dissenters as disreputable and then say AGW is obviously real because there are no reputable scientists who dissent against it. It's circular.
Not that the assertions are even TRUE.

What I've seen personally.

- In reading journal articles a great many have near the front a "Glory be to God" sentence or two, in which the authors affirm the TRUEY TRUTHY of CLIMATE CHANGE.  Then they get down to business and show hypothesis, data, method, results.  Usually this has almost no tangible relation to the "big questions" such as "Is man warming the planet up when he makes pancakes and fries bacon?"

- In talking with real scientists, a very very few are Alarmist but there are those.  Most have zero interest in Global Warming and consider it a political subject, not scientific.  If prodded they will voice an opinion usually only in a narrow field in which they are very much an expert.

11791  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Reddit’s science forum banned climate deniers. on: April 15, 2015, 05:50:56 PM
The only reasons I can see for getting into climate science at the start of one's career would be 1) one sees the field as a way to promote a particular unrelated agenda and receive money and accolades for doing totally shoddy work (a-la Dr. Mann), and 2) one is only capable of doing shoddy work but wants to be a 'scientist' anyway.

Here's a good laugh.

Following is a quote from a REAL SCIENTIST about REAL climate models.

We're about a year and a half away from the start of New Horizons' scientific mission at Pluto. Scientists are preparing for the encounter by developing models that make predictions for what New Horizons might see. Once we have the data from New Horizons in hand, scientists will be able to use that to figure out which models made the right predictions, and which didn't. At least that's how we hope it will work! The real world is always messier than our simulations.

Now, back to your regular scheduled program,

Actually I find the opposite effect, after a certain number of atrocities the mind snaps shut with a conclusion, "Just kill the bastards."  No discussion of religion or philosophy or cause and effect is further necessary.

Yes it's totally normal to behave like that in such a situation. But we need to calm down and think rationally before acting against such people.
We are in agreement.  I was talking about consideration of the moral, ethical and cultural questions relative to the atrocities - saying "Okay, I figured this out.  Now let's kill the bastards."

Developing a cohesive and systematic plan to do that efficiently would be a matter for nations as well as individuals, and would take possibly years.  The Geneva Convention does not apply to ISIS.

I think the isis members don't know what is the Geneva convention, or other accords. They should be killed, they don't deserve the life.

Would you include each and every member of the ISIS armies?

I ask because in the past...for example we handled differently the German average foot soldier than the SS or those in charge of the concentration camps.  Most were simply let go to go home, others were I think for them most part rightfully sentenced to death.

Of course, the extremists might be the ones with the correct views of Islam. The ignorant peaceful masses are probably simply ignorant to the truth of their professed religion, Islam. The studied clerics and others only want peace so that they can rape the ignorant masses. So, they lie about the fact that Islam is violent. The extremists probably are using Islam in the correct way.

I don't feel that has anything to do with the phrase "Allah Akbar" being hijacked by extemists manipulating the media.

11795  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Turkish Muslims now permitted to use toilet paper on: April 15, 2015, 02:54:03 PM
In my views, using toilet paper or water or three stone (as someone has posted it) it mainly comes from the kind of culture and history of the country. I don't think it is actually deriving from religion.

Probable yes, another example could be the 'burqa' because I don't think it is written or nominated (that word) in the Muslims book. It is only a question about the various culture, and these cultures were mixed with the religions.

Actually it is the people which interpreter their religion book in a way that they feel it's comfortable for them and lead the other people in wrong direction. That is the main problem. So people should use their brain before following any man/woman or book blindly.
This is only possible if a culture has literacy and a basic level of education for both men and women, say at the high school level.

The science is settled insofar as there is a clear consensus on the warming and its cause, as well as its negative effects.

Adding to the list.

  • Not after the various cases of fraud that have came up.
  • Not after the hockey stick debacle, where McIntire showed that random data ran through the hockey stick programs would produce....a hockey stick.
  • Not after the email releases.
  • Not after twenty years of no warming.
  • Not after the CLOUD experiment series by CERN
  • Not after public warnings by groups of astrophysicists studying the sun on the possible consequences of the current period of low solar sunspots
  • Not after several "surveys" using bogus methodology have attempted to "prove" that a scientific consensus exists, and after the errors in methodology of these surveys have been exposed
  • Not after the IPCC's admission of a lower climate sensitivity in their latest report, unless they are  also Deniers
  • Not after the change by the propagandists from "Global Warming" to "Climate Change", implicitly acknowledging the collapse of the "Global Warming Alarmist Paradigm."
  • Not after decades of the propagandists pushing a theory of a "global temperature" which is against the laws of thermodynamics, then implicitly acknowledging their error but going to an equally flawed concept that the heat was going into the ocean. (which was part of which skeptics had been telling them all along)
Today there are several important contributions to our understanding of climate from skeptics or Deniers if you will.

The fact that the climate sensitivity is considerably lower than the first four IPCC reports indicated.
The fact that there is a big influence on climate from the sun, and variability in excess of the variance in it's direct wattage impacting the surface
The fact that solar particles and solar wind influence cloud formation
The fact that the Medieval Warm Period existed
The fact that the Little Ice Age existed

There are many other demonstrable cases where Alarmists have attempted to cover up, repress or eliminate facts contrary to their vision.

You do not have a valid argument in "consensus."

But I would argue that hyping the concept of "scientific consensus" is bunko, because it has nothing to do with rightness or wrongness of ideas as established by the scientific method, but instead the opinions of a group.

The scientific method does not have within it's structure of null hypothesis, materials, method, procedure, results, conclusion, and summary a part for asking whether the larger body of experts agrees with the hypothesis, materials, method, procedure, results, conclusion and summary.

That's the solution you guys have for everything isn't it?
I'm in favor of destroying ISIS by nuclear bomb or whatever.  They have already destroyed cultural legacy of middle east by their attacks on libraries and ancient sculptures. They are killing innocent humans mostly Muslims and at the same time Islam and peaceful Muslims around the globe are targetted by media.
Most of established Islamic countries are fighting against so called "Islamic" militants including my  country Pakistan. The war against Taliban have killed 60,000 Muslim civilians so far.
These militants represent a very small percentage 0.01% of 1.7 billion Muslims and I myself living in a militancy hit province of Pakistan know that they are not fighting for Islam. They are funded by Foreign Powers for terrorism in muslim countries.

ISIS is indeed odd and singular if you look at it against military history.  They seem to be continually outdoing themselves to find the absolute worse most horrible and cruel actions.

And let me guess. Anyone who disagrees should be killed in the name of God.
Dude, I don't know where you live, but in the civilized societies we put people in jail. And the presence of the holly ghost has not been convincingly proven.

I sincerely hope we are headed toward war crimes tribunals for ISIS.
