But I am not ready to give up on this yet. I still want to help people, and I'll try what I can do best.

Not sure if this is the case here but these expensive paintings are often used for money laundering. The value of some of these paintings are crazy, the Mona Lisa has been valued at over $1 billion dollars.
48 million dollars for a car is also ridiculous. When your a multi billionaire though you have so much extra money you might as well blow it, can't take it with you when you die.
I don't think Monalisa or davinci paintings could be related to money laundry I think contemporary art is more related to money laundry, as someone can just put a $30 chair upside down and it will be worth $3,000,000. And Monalisa and davinci paintings are really worth a lot, because those paintings have a great influence over our culture. They are also scarse, as davinci can't paint anymore. |

They lend you some addresses on their wallet and hold your funds for you. This is like a custody service.

What is happening in Venezuela and Turkey are temporary(hopefully) and desperate situations.
Trading chicken for silver is also probably illegal there ...
I don't believe metals will be used as a currency again, like in middle age. Unless there is some sort of apocalyptic future (nuclear war, zombie attack, socialism).
Even without being used as a currency, gold/silver are a safe haven against crisis and can be an amazing investment.
If I were to buy metals (I hope I can buy some in future) I would probably buy an ETF, which can be easily traded at anytime. I believe there is no way back to silver/chicken pairs. Internet changed things forever.
With ETF I cannot get scammed, no one can steal it from me..
There are many downsides that we all know (centralization, coercion, government may take it away form me etc)... But those risks are somewhat lower than negotiating directly the physical coins. How do you know your coins are 98% silver and not 91%? Where will you store 10k usd silver? I am not a specialist and I could get scammed easily
If you are buying metal as a hedge against a total collapse, physical metal like your coins are way better.
If someone from Turkey had some Turkish silver ETF (if that even exists) they are probably fucked up, but I doubt countries like US or UK will have this kind of problems.
In Venezuela every financial asset became worthless because government use fake conversations rates against usd (like 1000x higher than in the dark market, which is now the real market).
What do you think? Why didn't you bought silver ETF?

Nope, if your mobile wallet crashed, it does not mean that your cryptos will lose as well, don't worry about that!  Probably the best mobile wallet for iOs is either Coinbase or Breadwallet. I strongly agree with this. I have a friend in Venezuela in a similar situation. He said that local authorities scan for high energy consumers. Some corrupted authorities ask for money, because they know who I mining. The best is to stay low and small in such unstable political areas. |

I do not wish to mine, only to have a method of withdraw and deposit to and from my bank account. This is because I've been asked if I have a wallet people can donate to, and it's been asked twice so I figured it would be helpful to have.
Coinbase wants my SSN and a photo ID, and I'm not comfortable with that.
There are similar issues with CEX and Kraken, from my research.

Coinbase, Kraken, etc are not Wallets, they are exchanges As you are a total newbie, I suggest that you get some mobile wallet such as Coinomi. (Download it on Google play or Apple store) It's very intuitive, free and anonymous. You can also try some web wallet, such as blockchain.info I believe mobile wallet is more secure. However both are unsafe. For security, considering buying a hardware wallet such as trezor or ledger nano. All wallets suggested here are 100% anonymous. But you are the one who is responsible for staying anonymous. A good practice is to avoid using the same receiving address more than once. |

Of course, its a terrible idea. Many of ethereum's core philosophies and engineering are hideous. Vitalik Buterin is in a political position where he must appease microsoft and other corporate sponsors of ETH and bow before their demands and so it shouldn't be surprising if ETH resembles Windows 10 in many respects. ETH is the microsoft windows of crypto currencies. It doesn't much resemble the linux equivalent to crypto nor the open source movement which gave birth to the classification of crypto currencies. (I think someone above covered this in an indirect way by saying that Satoshi Nakamoto had to be anonymous) Vitalik Buterin always maintains a united front with the opinions of bankers as if he were reading from a script they had written especially for him. My opinion anyway. Until I partner with microsoft and then I may be the one reading from a script.  This Windows comparison is interesting. However I didn't get your idea about vitalik and the bankers. vitalik Buterin really acts in a weird way sometimes, but in my opinion tokenization model is revolutionary and it was a great blow to the financial system. Now companies does not need to be funded through the stock market, they can be easily funded without any burocratic issue through ethereum ICOs. |
