How fat would the Fed's wallet become if they seized all gambling sites simultaneously and managed to acquire associated wallets?

alot

but gambling is not illegal

Can you--or anyone--be more specific? How many coins are tied up in gambling at any given moment?

btw: http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2007/june/gambling_060607 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_gambling#United_States

Also, the sites could be seized if they are being used for money laundering.

You are joking or wildly guessing, right?

i know gambling is a big part of the bitcoin economy...

its a good guess, for a vague question, define "tie up"

with all this anti gox talk on here, i've moved my funds out to bitstamp. now I feel at ease again.

oh didn't you get the memo? stamp is going down, too. We're already moving all funds to btcchina.com

That is the chinese plan. They want all our bitcoins there and after they will confiscate all the bitcoins to rule the world  Grin

 Shocked

OMG its TRUE!

how did i not see this coming?  Grin

addendum:I believe we will one day see some drugs legalized, like weed... the drug war was not a good idea. they should regulated it, and strongly discourage young people from doing drugs. Instead we get feed "this buds for you" commierals. what i joke.
11885  Economy / Speculation / Re: What threats to Bitcoin exist? on: November 01, 2013, 07:16:34 PM
its hard to imagine anything that could bring down bitcoin as a whole. but bitcoin faces many challenges ahead, the tech is not perfected, its growing really fast, and its scary!

11887  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Hardcore on: November 01, 2013, 03:44:07 PM
People want that this thread shall be renamed to: "Wall Observer". That's it, plain and simple. Adam?

please this Smiley

fine by me. There's the bitstamp wall observer thread, but I think we can easily have a general one.

Just need to get used to quote prices along with exchange.

Adam, you hear us?

So the bank holidays are giving us slow weekend. Maybe in monday we get some action.

yes i am awake now.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=126834.msg1346721#msg1346721

these coins have mini paper wallets, which can go through the wash and not be damaged
Its a neat alternative to paper wallets, and a fun way of storing bitcoin
the only security concern is the fact that Casascius and I had access to the private key.

Edit: these coins do not have holograms on the back, which makes them affordable

this is what bitcoin was made for.

is it a giant hat?

Heh, more like a Captain America Shield.

I'm wearing it like an M&M costume over my body; however, to sit at my desk, I hoist it onto my back.

Here's a pic from Saturday night's party:

11891  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does running Bitcoin QT make you a target for hackers? on: November 01, 2013, 04:05:39 AM
Logging into bitcointalk and allowing images to be viewed makes you a target for hackers.

Ah, good point.

Anyone know a good resource to get answers to the following questions then? (maybe a more security-focused forum)

Assume you're given an IP,

(1) the IP belongs to a windows 8 machine, the admin password is very simple, and remote desktop is enabled. How easy is it to break in? I assume it's just a matter of guessing passwords as fast as you can. Anyone know the practical limit to how many remote desktop password attempts a win8 machine will allow per unit of time?
(2) If remote desktop is disabled, then it's very unlikely that even a dedicated hacker could get into your machine even if your admin password is super simple, right? I assume this is the kind of vulnerability that would make a huge news splash if found.

i'm not a hacker but i don't think guessing passwords is the way to go.

best to make users install your trojan which gives you a back door to their computer. the trojan can read the wallet.dat file and report its contents, which can do a lot of damage if you did not encrypted your wallet with a strong password.

if you just don't install shit off the web,
disable java!
and encrypted your wallet

I would imagine hackers won't be able to get to you.
11892  Economy / Speculation / Re: [poll] Positioned for Profits on: November 01, 2013, 03:37:59 AM
can we select multiple options please?

this cannot be done with edit, i would have to start a new thread. this will have to do.

I would speculate that the rally was not fueled by poeple going long, but by shorts covering.
11895  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Hardcore on: November 01, 2013, 02:56:27 AM
Let's say the snowballing momentum of margin position covers, panic, and shorting causes it to violate its appropriate trendline.  It might catch 130 (weekly ema) and if armageddon happens then  maybe 90 (how low weekly ema was violated in July).

Did you just learn about Bitfinex today?  People have been taking long and short positions on there for some time now.

in theory all the leveraged positions should lower volatility.

until a squeeze happens and forced liquidation begins Wink

but thats just a good opt. to take a position so it should all balance out

The major news that could cause bitcoin to skyrocket, is if most US banks adopt the JPMorgan Chase policy of not allowing foreign bank wires for individual (non-business) accounts. Coinbase would have a field day, that's for sure.

i think most US banks have already done this

poeple we're posting links of different banks announcing a new similar policy.
11898  Economy / Speculation / Re: BITSTAMP eXchange wall Observer. second biggest and best exchange on: November 01, 2013, 12:55:14 AM
the market milking this resistance.

once it breaks ( can't be long now... ) all the suckers will have sold in this range and we will fly away like never b4.
11899  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Hardcore on: October 31, 2013, 08:03:37 PM
virtex is acting weird!

there is this huge wall at 210 when it could be placed at 205 and still be top bid.

why pay +5$ if you don't have too...

If he makes it a market order the slippage will raise the price past $220. Looks like he's impatient, by putting the price "higher than it should be" he's encouraging impulse sells. I know I'm tempted...

Don't take it too seriously it's just BTC150 or what...

ya about that was 230 now 120

its a nice wall for virtex.

edit: 80BTC now

ya i'm tempted too, i could sell into his wall and place the bids in a more effective spot, cavitex is clearly overbought.
