121  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Big Bounty: 1,000 BTC (One Thousand BTC) Shared Among A Small Group Of Writers. on: May 17, 2011, 12:16:22 PM
Whatever could it all mean, the words were there but they faded in and out of meaning. My brain hummed to the tune of five heaving video cards cooking numbers in the wires. Maybe I was seeing it all backwards, that I was mistaken and confused, It would not be the fist time that this had happened. The seconds melted into minutes, thoughts rolled across my mind like puzzle pieces being strewn across an irregular landscape of moving color and sound. A brightly illuminated gentleman swam over to me as I floated aloft on my back, pulling on my pant legs he motioned me towards a small door on the horizon. What was this door, was it the way I had been looking for?

As it grew closer I got the warm sensation that toast gave on a crisp morning laced with dew and bird chatter, a singing tone rung out from beneath me and the illuminated gentleman ducked under for a quick peak. This murmur grew more and more vivid, the wash of detail more and more in focus. They were telling me to pay close attention and at the same time to let my thoughts wain over the banks of accepted discourse and through the deep undergrowth of my hidden alleyways.

"How obscure" I murmured to myself, "It's a test".

Lol, "fist time".
122  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do i say Bitcoin in Lojban? on: May 14, 2011, 04:03:13 PM
Can you explain what's wrong with "la kato"?

I think one of the advantages of learning esperanto is, that you can reuse the learnt vocabulary in other languages (from the romanic or germanic familiy). So you don't really lose the time even though you might not use it in your everday's life (which is possible though).

Going to esperanto meetings is fun. I never met so many interesting people gathered in one place. But it's probably also true for Lojban that it attracts smart people.
Spanish speakers or people more familiar with Spanish than Esperanto look at la kato and think it should be el kato or la kata.

Nerdiest thing ever...
Pretty much.
123  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BitDrop (or ShadyDeliveryNetwork), a non-robotic courier system on: May 14, 2011, 02:43:12 PM
I think the only big problem with this plan is that it needs a critical mass of bitcoin users that isn't yet there, and may not be for some time. Is there any way to estimate the population density of bitcoin in a major metropolitan area? If you can prove it works in NYC then I can see it working elsewhere.
When the system can't find an acceptable route, it should let the would-be sender know, but also contact potential nodes and ask if they'd make an exception to their travel limits.
124  Local / Mercado y Economía / Re: Chilenos! on: May 13, 2011, 07:43:32 PM

It was a dark and stormy night...

The blue line is under the pink one... doesn't that mean prices should fall?  Cheesy
No, it means you're pregnant.
127  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Stop building mining rigs people!!!!! on: May 13, 2011, 03:18:18 AM
Hey, some of us are also gun enthusiasts.

And community activists, which is a good way to effect non-state organization. It might not be so bad.  Wink
A lot of ass-kicking for the Lord going on around here it seems.
128  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Stop building mining rigs people!!!!! on: May 12, 2011, 10:56:47 PM
Today a woman asked me if I installed google on her laptop
You should have replied, "we don't do that here", as if she asked for a happy ending of some sort.
129  Economy / Economics / Re: Physical in-store uses for Bitcoin on: May 12, 2011, 09:59:03 PM
I foresee people buying things with Ripple and bitcoin simultaneously. Until there's enough confirmations on a given transaction, a debt gets applied to the buyers Ripple profile. When the transaction gets enough confirmations, Ripple debt gets paid back. I imagine a smart phone client would handle it all.
130  Economy / Economics / Re: Culture drives markets not supply / demand not psychology on: May 12, 2011, 09:54:39 PM
There is a culture behind gold and silver and bitcoin and it is only growing. And that's what's causing people to reject tweaks to the basic platform.
Surely cultures exist then that would value those tweaks. If they apply them to their own version of Bitcoin, Tweakcoin as it were, they'd get what they want. Happy day.
131  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gavin will visit the CIA on: May 12, 2011, 09:37:37 PM
I don't entirely disagree with your sentiment but... this is the CIA we are talking about.

We are talking about the people that have done everything from setup secret brothels to study what happens when they slip people LSD 40 years ago, to helping run secret prisons and torture facilities, run guns, introduced crack into inner cities... and regularly murder people with remote controlled planes.

The CIA is, in my estimation, the enemy of all civilized human beings.

They're just protecting American profits, and their own. It's self-defense, really. But, uh, I digress.

I also recall a pharma company sending agents to purchase all of their products at pharmacies produced when one of their manufacturing plants failed to meet certain safety guidelines so they wouldn't have to issue a recall (or something like that).
It was Johnson & Johnson. I'm sure others have done it, too.
133  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin is not used as money anymore on: May 12, 2011, 05:02:08 PM
Sad, because bitcoin, as well as gold, is intended to be money, not an object for speculation.
Who intended that for either thing, and why should we care?

Quote
Anyway, look at this example. A chicken grower sells a chicken for $5. A bitcoin is also equal to $5. This means a chicken = 1 bitcoin. But since USD/BTC ratio is less constant than chicken/USD ratio, nobody will use that coin to buy chicken. They'll sell the coin for dollars, hoping for more than $5. If they'll get $6 for the coin, they can buy the chicken with 5 and also a coke for 1. So what do we do about that?
I expect that vendors will start selling at a floating average. If they do so with enough bitcoins, we'll see more stability in the price of bitcoins with respect to other currencies.
134  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Stop building mining rigs people!!!!! on: May 12, 2011, 04:55:31 PM
They do. There's a very old and very efficient business model about that. Just ask, in a very polite way, people to give you all of their money. It generally doesn't work except if you have a gun in your hand at the same time. It's very efficient because you can re-use the gun as many time as you want.

Unfortunately, this was a so easy business model that most government made it illegal. Damn government, they are really abusing their power. We should be allowed to conduct any business we want between consenting adults.

Can't tell if you're being single-sarcastic or double-sarcastic, but it doesn't take a government for a society to consider the use or threat of violence immoral. In fact, I would argue that governments by their very nature participate happily in the very behavior from which you think they protect us.
I think it works without assuming any sarcasm.
135  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Maximum number of bitcoins on: May 12, 2011, 12:56:28 AM
Well maybe these people ought to become really normal and learn to add a couple new word to their dictionaries.
And stop using Internet Explorer while they're at it.
136  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Introducing Bitbills! on: May 11, 2011, 05:18:15 PM
I think the idea is that you can instantly trade in person with Bitbills. A direct online BTC transfer takes time to be confirmed.
You could also conduct a trade without waiting for confirmations by using Ripple, and settling the debt with a friend later on. As it stands though, Ripple requires a central server just like paper money requires a central issuer.
137  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: P2P Social Networks and Bitcoin on: May 11, 2011, 02:27:31 PM
What I'd really like to see with Diaspora is Ripple integration.
138  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Rain Droplet open decentralized community credit on: May 10, 2011, 08:02:49 PM
Now that Ripplepay lets users choose BTC, how does Rain Droplet distinguish itself?
139  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Introducing Bitbills! on: May 10, 2011, 06:00:37 PM
I still don't think expiration dates are necessary or wanted.  I would rather have less currency in circulation, than have my bitcoins randomly expire because I forgot to redeem them by a certain date.  I HATE expiration dates on things.  If I get a gift card, I want it to be good for as long as I live.  Same with gift certificates.  Expiration dates are frustrating, obnoxious, and I would never purposefully buy something with them.  I'm too forgetful of a person to buy money that expires.
I also hate when gift cards expire, deactivate, or when their value decays to nothing. Redeeming or reactivating a gift card is a pain. You have to either go to the right store to spend it or mail some forms to the Vogons. But, with something like BitBills, you can redeem, and simultaneously void, the notes yourself. All you need is the means to cut them open and a camera.

I expect that we will eventually have multiple printed bitcoin implementations and people will choose the ones they like or not choose any. As we all know, bitcoins work fine unprinted.
140  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Introducing Bitbills! on: May 10, 2011, 05:31:12 PM
It kills incentive to buy the cards as an easy way to hold bitcoins for the future.  I picture it like having a stock certificate.  You know you have it, you have proof you have it, there's no risk of digital loss, and you can open it up and redeem it at any time in the future.
Can't we just do that ourselves? Just print out the private key, lock it up, and delete it on your PC.

Expiring notes will help new notes with better security get into circulation. A redeem or exchange by date on the bill itself will fairly keep the holder informed.
