Install a firewall and block all ports except for outgoing to 8333: bitcoin will use that to connect to other bitcoin nodes.
You may also want to open the outgoing irc port, as bitcoin uses irc to discover other clients. If you don't open this on your firewall, you'll probably have to run bitcoin with the -addnode parameter as otherwise I doubt you'll have any connections.
Thanks. Will iptables suffice? YES

If that's the case, then why does bitcoin.org's promo video start with "WHAT is Bitcoin?" It needs to start with WHY Bitcoin!

I'm probably going to regret doing this in the Newbie forum, but here it is: Zeitgeist boils down to one thing, pure and simple:
Population control.
Okay. Can you document this with information from the official website? Count the number of times the movie says "Live within our means" and "what the planet will bear" "According to a new report released last week from the United Nations, one-third of all food produced for human consumption on the planet -- about 1.3 billion tons -- is lost or wasted each year." And no "Live within our means" and "what the planet will bear" its not the same as population control....

I wonder how this could actually work. Would legislation that affects Bitcoin also affect Facebook's game currency or the Linden Dollar?
I can't imagine that they could rush something through like this
Yeah exactly anyway I dont trade currency I trade 'unique number over internet' how they plan to ban numbers ?? some peopel can call it currency but what is bitcoin from legal point of view??, from technical its only unique number nothing more. ONE BIG CAN OF WORM from legal point of view.

After writing the HOWTO on 100% security, a lot of you requested I do the same thing in a more comprehensible way, or that I provide a solution for absolute beginners. So here's the deal: I have to know if you are serious enough, and if this is worth the trouble. Because if I do this, I'll do it properly, i.e I will test everything I write, there will be an easy guide for Linux, Mac and Windows and I will probably make a one-click solution, which will consist of a specific LiveCD, which already has bitcoin installed, and which will allow you to boot up a secure system and make transactions, without _any_ configuration necessary. I did personalized LinuxCDs before, so this will definitely do-able. The result will be a solution for people with zero computer knowledge. However, since this will take time and effort and since anybody can just click yes on the above poll, I'm asking for donations if you are _really_ serious about having an all-in-one solution. You don't have to send me anything at all, it's up to you. Here's my hat: 16VD78R8nxqJGesE7E9KS6A8TikQQpKNm5 If you happen to find this proposal insulting (which is, that I don't want to spend a week making something that nobody uses), feel free to insult me in the comments below. Just use OpenBSD 2 remote holes in default installation in about 10 years.... but 'stupid user' > OpenBSD

Bitcoin it is a currency anti inflation, and it is best to reflect that fact. That's why I believe it is important to make that change as soon as possible. Currently, there's only around 60.000 people trading with Bitcoin at Mt.Gox. That's almost nothing compared to what it will very likely be in 3 months, 6 months, 12 months. So, while such a change already is kind of painful, the longer we wait, the more painful it become. Mathematically, it may not make a difference - but what matters is the difference in perception: No one wants to work with a currency where you have to do transactions like 0.0001 BTC sent over. That simply doesn't work. However, sending around 100 uBTC seems reasonable. The way I see it, Bitcoin is especially interesting for microtransactions - and for that specific use case, the current way the decimal is handled is just wrong. Of course, that kind of change must be communicated wisely ... No

'A non-ECP is essentially a retail customer.' This is very smart move, you dont ban it but in practice 99% people will not able buy it due restriction. As a result of the recently enacted Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, U.S.-based retail forex dealers such as OANDA are prohibited from offering leveraged trading in precious metals to retail clients after Friday, July 15, 2011.
Sorry for duble post.

I don't want to burst your bubble, but I'm pretty sure sites are required to verify age. Maybe they could still do this with a $0 charge on a card. It really shouldn't matter as anyone with access to google can see anything they want anyways. Plus I could just see all those goons in the congress getting upset. After all bitcoins is a currency for druggies and perverts. It would only be righteous to protect the children from this vile construct and get a few votes on the side.
Yeah age verify.... have you seen age verify on youporn or redtube ? I assume not.

Nvidia makes good polished products. ATI makes cards with raw performance. Somehow ATI is winning here for doing less R&D.

It's pretty dumb that bitcoins has this ever expanding file that is necessary and contains details from day 1. But that's just the way it is.
And that's how security of Bitcoins works. If you find a better way to implement a 'P2P currency' system, we're all ears. Cheers, Kermee I don't care to make one. Just because there's nothing better yet doesn't make the existing cumbersome nature excusable. Why have all the blocks? It's the equivalent of bring out movies on torrent by adding the movie onto the last one. It's not like everyone needs access to all the movies (or transactions). As long as there are enough seeders of the early ones then they will always be available. All needs to happen is for someone break the blocks up, and MD5 hash them so that transactions can be archived and accessed with confidence. But yeah, right now, the fact it has an ever expanding file is still pretty dumb. You dont get it...

i never liked the fact that US and EU Server work completely seperated and work on different blocks. Then the US Server was testing around with a new payout method wich finally broke the whole US Server. Everyone was on the EU Server after that, wich was not that bad. But i have seen alot more stale and corrupted shares since everyone came to the EU Server. Maybe to much load for one server? Finally the EU Server was goin down too. And now i am asked to vote for payout systems wich i don't realy understand completely. After all i had to move to a different pool now. I'm realy sorry about that as i generally liked the st. eligius pool. I hope you get back to a stable system soon with all servers working on the same block. I will surely come back then, but for now.. Bye Bye St.Eligius This +1
