AFAIK that changed in 2022 when a solo miner running it produced a high enough share (>32bit) to verify that Braiins can indeed work at the diffs needed.
122  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S19 PRO Hydro - chain avg vol drop on: February 10, 2024, 10:45:34 PM
@OP PSU's do not care about phasing, only devices directly generating motion from 3-phase power eg motors care.

So as I'm reading this topic, BrainsOS+ cannot find block on solo mining? I'm currently testing it on s9 but I'm confused after your (kano) post that BrainsOS+ is not suitable to find a block
Um just *where* did you see that?
Braiins works here just fine. In fact in the early days of Braiins, it was only allowed on solo and not allowed on the main pool. Why - because the devs refused to offer any proof of it being able to find a block. Only once it was proved that Braiins could find a block it was it allowed on the main pool.
124  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Privacy Protocols on: February 07, 2024, 06:16:09 PM
My take on it is that he understood that absolute privacy of transactions - be it BTC, fiat, or whatever - naturally opens the doors to a myriad of illicit uses. Only an immutable and public ledger gives a way to track those uses and yes, if need be, prosecute the folks involved. By being a public ledger he (thought he) removed the ability to use BTC for things that are against 'The Public Good'.

Now, the sticking point is that yes, transactions can be followed through the blockchain BUT who/what has ownership of coins cannot be discovered until they are exchanged into fiat or some type of physical goods which can be linked to people & organizations. He wanted to make sure that BTC had that discovery mechanism.

Of course ones definition of 'illicit activities' and  'The Public Good' largely depends on the individual and their governments...
125  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: SegWit address organization website link shows now a suspicious website on: February 07, 2024, 01:19:27 AM
@OP
my guess is that the site may have been hijacked? Ja redirection is common but usually that is within the original site domain you used to get there. Searching google for that site returns "No information available" so not a good sign. No matter what I would be highly suspicious as you rightly are. edit Malwarebytes blocks it reporting

Website blocked: track.tychon.bid
Malwarebytes Browser Guard blocked this website because it may contain malware activity.
We strongly recommend you do not continue.
For convenience sake I do use Coinbase as an exchange and for generating receiving addresses but of course regularly sweep them to my hardware wallet and load from it into Coinbase whatever amount I am going to spend/exchange. Very little is ever there for long. Main advantage to an exchange is easy records keeping including required tax information but enough about that

I long ago used an offline Vanity Generator program to create my vanity address and imported that to Coinbase so I easily know if there has been any donations (hint hint?) Last one was from a dust attack a year or so ago that was sent to scores of addresses, was like 0.00001BTC or whatever the absolute minimum is.
126  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Trouble installing cgminer on Raspberry Pi on: February 06, 2024, 10:58:26 PM
1st of all make sure you are running Kano's latest version from his git. -ck's version are long outdated and Kano is the only remaining active original Primary developer for it. There are a ton of outdated clones out there - avoid them!

That said ref his installation page for compiling/using it. and click on the link for Building on linux/ubuntu

This (from that page) should get the latest from his repo and compile it. I used it unaltered to write to my Pi 3B.
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade -y
sudo apt-get install -y build-essential autoconf automake libtool pkg-config libcurl4-openssl-dev libudev-dev libusb-1.0-0-dev libncurses5-dev zlib1g-dev git
cd
git clone https://github.com/kanoi/cgminer.git
cd cgminer
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=native -fcommon" ./autogen.sh --enable-gekko --enable-icarus
make
sudo apt-get install -y openjdk-8-jre-headless

- why can it be allowed for internet to put up such suspiciuos websites, it's not regulated, we have 2024!?
Use a decent AV program such as Malwarebytes and you get clear warning of dangerous sites and it blocks their actions unless you specifically tell it to continue... What you do from there is up to you.

As for the regulation etc of sites... Learn what the internet is and how it works! To a very large extent there are no global rules and regulations controlling it and NEVER should be. Period. Individual countries *can* try to control how the internet works in their country but usually their control is also balanced by not explicitly censoring (most) content and for the most part leaving it up to the users to use what should be common sense and know how to avoid malware.

Countries such as China, Russia, North Korea et al are tightly controlled and so is internet there... Would you want to live under that kind of control? I sure as hell wouldn't.

I have never used the website in question and I would avoid it even if it was working.
You should never use online websites for generating a bitcoin address.
The 1 caveat to that would be using a WIDELY TRUSTED on-line exchange that you have an account with. While 'still not your keys' it is the only on-line kind of site I would ever use.

The major issue with using any online site like the OP posted is that you have zero assurance that someone who works at the site won't keep a copy of the private keys that users create. A couple years ago an on-line Vanity Address generator site did exactly that to users that it accumulated for several years.. One day folks woke up to find any BTC sitting at the address was gone.  Roll Eyes

CMIIW, but doesn't the creator or publisher still have right how their shareware is distributed?
AFAIK with shareware all that is required is that the Credits list the original creators/owners, it not be modified, and that it be provided for free. It can be distributed in any form.

1st result when searching "shareware":

Shareware is commercial software that is distributed free to users, eventually either requiring or encouraging users to pay for the continued support of the software. You might see shareware in formats that paywall advanced features or offer the full package for a limited time.
130  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S19 95TH setup on: January 30, 2024, 01:04:15 AM
Thanks for your quick reply, realy appreciated. Should have started here for informations.
Hopefully the cord that came with it has the proper plug for your country - the US, Asia and rest of the world all use different styles of power outlets & plugs... The end that plugs into the miner is the one *standard* connector they all use.

131  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S19 95TH setup on: January 29, 2024, 10:42:46 PM
A PDU is only for if you want to switch or otherwise control/monitor several miners. For one miner just plug it into a 208-240V 20A receptacle.
132  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Crypto & Older Generation on: January 24, 2024, 09:20:49 PM
Age has nothing to do with it. To me it is all to do with a person - regardless of age - understanding the Digital Age and all that it entails. For most that means understanding all that has happened since the 1st IBM PC (and the Mac) being introduce to the world back in the early 1980's. In my case it was 1974 when I built my 1st computer, an Altair 8800 followed by the SWTP 6800.

In short - if a person knows how to use a computer and has at least a basic understanding what goes on 'inside the case" along with the sense to thoroughly research things then they will be fine. They just need to be comfortable with using digital technology.

Speaking of being comfortable with tech... Perhaps it's because of my (many) decades of working with PC's frankly I'm aghast at how many younger folks NEVER even think about the risks in using any connected device be it a PC, 'smartphone', or tablet that not only can but DO present when personal information much less financial information is processed using them. Being so comfortable with tech that a person uses it with no thoughts whatsoever about security as so many 'younger' folks do is just asking for trouble.
133  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Bitcoin Rebound This Week on: January 23, 2024, 08:51:32 PM
Will BTC rebound this week?
Flip a coin for yes or no.
It largely depends on the idjits suffering from FOMO that bought into it last week at the highest price it has been at in the past 52 weeks... Whether or not they have enough sense to HOLD their positions remains to be seen.
134  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: WTF is OP_CAT? on: January 23, 2024, 03:00:01 PM
Any idea being pushed by Eric Wall and Udi Wertheimer should be shoved right back up a certain area of their personages.
The fees they generate may be nice but Ordinals need to be removed from the BTC blockchain.
135  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Waste Power on: January 22, 2024, 10:50:50 PM
Frankly, ok, mining is not a bad idea to use some of the power but one has to ask - would it not be better to use most of the generation to power local villages and make money/barter for goods & services from that? It would certainly be a much more reliable and consistent source of income.

One tip regarding the generator - it MUST be rated for what is called Prime Power usage: They are designed & built to run 24x7 for many many months at a time before needing to be checked. Regular generators regardless of size need to be serviced about every 100hrs of running time or less. If mineral mining is a thing in your country look for used Prime Power generators being sold by the mines.
136  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: How to host your own solo pool? on: January 22, 2024, 02:15:35 AM
The OP said
Quote
As my hash rate will be so small (about 500gh) I’m thinking I won’t have a chance competing with everyone on ck pool.
Um, you are NOT competing against everyone on said pool - you and all other miners everywhere are competing against ALL miners running everywhere on the planet. Solo is solo and it is far better to do it on a pool that has all of the back end hardware and fast internet connections in place. One such as Kano's or -ck's solo pools.

When a block is found it is found by just 1 ASIC chip. It makes no difference if that chip is the only 1 on a USB stick or if it was one of the 100's that are in each of the top-end miners and it makes no difference if it is a solo miner or one that is part of a pool.
137  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Expect the Orginals game to get even bigger - actual games on: January 19, 2024, 01:49:47 AM
Hmm, just came across this in the Project Development area...
Methinks it deals with what I started this thread about: Using the BTC blockchain for storing retro games... In all fairness the op of that thread does say "a blockchain" (emphasis is mine on the 'a') vs explicitly saying the BTC blockchain.
Nonetheless it still makes one wonder...
138  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Bitcoin CPU on: January 18, 2024, 03:40:26 AM
Or for a lower cost "lottery chances" solo mining route you can use a USB stick miner from Sidehack or his higher THs pod miner the R909
Both require Kano's latest cgminer for the drivers running on a PC or Pi.

Minuscule chance of finding a block but it *does* happen.
139  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2024 Diff thread happy New Years. on: January 17, 2024, 08:17:31 PM
There is no 'if' about it. ERCOT's pricing & usage deals with the major mines in Texas has been oft discussed here. Same thing happens in the very hot summertime for the same reason.

Those usage deals are what has enabled ERCOT to invest heavily in solar & wind power. A historic problem with solar & wind energy has been how to deal with how much and when power is produced. Because the grid in Texas is mostly isolated from the rest of the US grid ERCOT cannot bring in power when needed and cannot ship out excess power production. The deals with miners has let ERCOT vastly overbuild solar/wind production because the miners will act as a massive base load to use it and like now, when conditions warrant the miners will throttle down as needed with ERCOT paying them usage credits for doing it. I for one cannot think of any other industry that can easily & quickly per-site switch on/off 10's to 100's of MW worth of power usage with very short notice.

A rare win-win for all involved.
140  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2024 Diff thread happy New Years. on: January 17, 2024, 03:34:57 PM
A good part of the drop is no doubt the extremely cold weather in Texas and the rest of the USA. ERCOT no doubt has Foundry and others throttling back so power can be used in the rest of the state https://www.telegraph.co.uk/us/comment/2024/01/16/green-wind-solar-energy-freezing-texas-power-grid-blackout/
