Author Topic: Antminer S19 PRO Hydro - chain avg vol drop  (Read 149 times)

Hey,

I'm having problems with the Hydro version of S19. The miner has been mining for a few days and all of a sudden reports a chain avg vol drop. It starts to resolve the voltage and mining drops out. Only a restart always helps.
With S19 with fans it is supposedly the bad cooling of the power supply that does it, but here the temperatures are fine, I would say rather lower.
Any idea?

I don't know what exactly happens before you get this logs if you could post the whole kernel logs here we can maybe get some idea of what happened to the miner from the whole logs.

For now, what I could suggest is to flash the unit first with the latest firmware version and maybe it's just a bug that needs to be reflash and it can be fixed by upgrading it to the latest version.

If you can't post the whole logs here you can use pastebin.com and paste the URL here.

To your suggestions.
1. I uploaded the firmware last what is
2. I will upload the full log, but as you will see, the miner ran for a day and then started to drop on the chain. I suspect a voltage drop in the mains. Everything else is fine.
3. Input temperature is 24*C, temperature after the source at the distributor is 24.2*C.
4. Internet stable.

Now I see all failed and errors pointed to voltage and yes possible this is a PSU issue.

Is the unit plugged directly into the wall outlet or did you use an extension?
If you are using an extension it might be the cause of your problem because the extension outlet you have can't provide enough power. So try to plug the unit directly into the wall outlet.
Also, check the power cords if it's plugged properly or better replug them, and then test them again.

If not, for a temporary solution would you mind to try if you can run the unit at low power mode you can usually find it under pool configuration. If it works without this voltage error keep running it at LPM but if the issue still persists you don't have other choice but to replace the PSU.

Now I see all failed and errors pointed to voltage and yes possible this is a PSU issue.

Is the unit plugged directly into the wall outlet or did you use an extension?
If you are using an extension it might be the cause of your problem because the extension outlet you have can't provide enough power. So try to plug the unit directly into the wall outlet.
Also, check the power cords if it's plugged properly or better replug them, and then test them again.

If not, for a temporary solution would you mind to try if you can run the unit at low power mode you can usually find it under pool configuration. If it works without this voltage error keep running it at LPM but if the issue still persists you don't have other choice but to replace the PSU.

The miner is connected by a 4x4 mm cable directly to the substation with a short cable 4x4 again to the circuit breaker. I don't think it's in the wiring, but the cause may be a voltage drop in the mains.
I'll take some measurements and see.
Today the miner has held for 28 hours straight without a failure.
I'll figure out some automation via Home assistant to restart the miner. Too bad Braiins for Hydro version is not out anymore. There is an integration to monitor the status of the miner and it is easy to restart it directly from HA.
So far I'm trying to connect Node red via HTTP request to the Braiins pool API, but even though node is connected I can't download any data about my miner yet.
However, I can see the data in the browser

As NFW said, phase sequence doesn't matter here, however, phase failure does, if one of the phases fails the miner stops, also, you need to take a good measurement of your phase-to-phase voltage, it needs to be 342~418V for the miner to operate correctly, I don't know much about electricity complication in the U.S, but in EU and most of the world you know this by measuring the potential difference between each two live wires.

4mm2 is more than enough for the 10amps the S19 hydro uses, so it's unlikely that you are facing a voltage drop caused by the resistance in the wire, but it's likely a drop in your input voltage, it's would be near impossible to figure out if that indeed is the case given that your miner does run fine for a while, you would need to sit there with your tools measuring the power all day long hopping to see if that is the case.

What I would do is get a 3-phase voltage monitor/control relay, something like this

You need it to be 3 phase (and has no RT / Reset function), so that when it trips -- it doesn't automatically turn back on.

Set the minimum voltage to 360V and the max to 420v, if you come back home and the relay is shutdown it means there was indeed a voltage drop from the mains, obviously you don't want to connect this straight to the miner, just run 3 wires from the same breaker to it, later on if you want to connect it to the miner to protect it you are going to need a contactor (20A 3P) controlled by the phase protection relay which then controls the miner.

I did need confirmation from you more experienced ones that it may be a voltage drop if I have ruled out other possible variables.

I have experience with measuring variables and storing them in a database with my projects around a photovoltaic power plant. I use a UNIPI PLC and EM340DIN-AV23X-S1X meters connected via Modbus. So I won't have to sit at home at the power supply all day :-)

But I have another idea. I'm connected to the Braiins pool, it has its API. Even though I've gone through all their instructions from the home assistant I can't get the right data, whether the miner is running or not.
But I am getting the data in the PC browser.
When Braiins OS will be also for hydro version S19 everything will be OK, there is already an integration in HA that can read the data with Braiins OS. Then automation can be built easily in HA.

Of course, with metering and tripping via contactor I will achieve mine too, just via sowtware would be more elegant.

One more addition.
Today I was doing a broadcast channel change on the AP WiFi and had to restart it. Miner is connected to the switch not directly to the access point. So it pretended that the LAN was fine.
During the AP reboot the internet was down, but the LAN was working.
Miner dropped out, no message about lost connection, but dropped again chaine about voltage.
Thus, I think all the problems are caused by a stable but slow line to the internet.
Instead of measuring the voltage on the phases I will measure the data flows to the web :-)
