121  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Andreas Antonopolous raising funds for Dorian Nakamoto on: April 23, 2014, 04:38:34 AM
I wonder what kind of wallet Dorian has.  Blockchain with 2fa ?

Seems like Andreas just gave him a Blockchain.info wallet as the funds are still in the original donation wallet.

man, that device looks beautiful...  i could imagine that such a device could gain popular traction not only because it´s bitcoin but because it is stylish... Cool

123  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: is bitcoin bigger than we think? on: April 22, 2014, 02:45:03 PM
is bitcoin bigger than we (or i) think, as it is often referred to or insinuated that it is only used by relatively few people.

From looking at the alexa ranking for some of the bitcoin sites, they are much higher than i would have expected (i am very pleased to see this!).

bitcointalk.org is 5,158 most popular site in the world.
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/bitcointalk.org

CoinDesk is around 20,000 which is not bad for a news site on BitCoin that supposedly does not have too many followers.
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/coindesk.com

bitcoin.org is 8,924
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/bitcoin.org

mtgox.com is 9,292
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/mtgox.com

all 4 above sites are climbing fast too (much faster than most sites)!
From my limited experience of Alexa rankings, i would say that the above sites must take multiple-millions of page views and unique visitors per day.

Just thought i would share this....

Ford

Bitcoin users and people interested in Bitcoin may be overrepresented in the stats that Alexa produces.
124  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I can't find any information on Nick Szabo, is he is who he says he is? on: April 22, 2014, 02:41:44 PM
Satoshi, whoever you are, thank you, you really worked hard for everyone. Otsukaresama

Maybe it would be better to spend less time trying to find satoshi, and simply promote his ideals.

If you try to find satoshi, it will only give him troubles and waste his valuable time.

I feel that is something nobody here would like to do.

I agree, but someone made the argument that if the real satoshi comes forward, especially if he/she/they are spectacular in some way, the news would go nuts about it and tons of people would hear about Bitcoin. Imagine the media frenzy it would cause.
125  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I can't find any information on Nick Szabo, is he is who he says he is? on: April 22, 2014, 01:55:34 PM
And when it is that low, nobody will buy.

I would assume people have a bigger incentive to buy if the price is relatively low. I would definitely buy a few thousand BTC at $0.01.
126  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to pay for things online using BTC?... on: April 22, 2014, 03:20:50 AM
When prompted with a BUY NOW page, indicating 0.1 BTC are to be sent to whatever address... how do you proceed?
Do you send 0.1 + transaction fee, or 0.999 BTC?

You send 0.1 to the retailer.  That is the payment to them.  Then, if your transaction requires a transaction fee, you include that as well.

Will the retailer fuss over a transaction fee amount missing?

Most retailers use automated software that is looking for a specific payment.  If you don't send the correct amount, the software won't recognize it as being "paid in full".

Most merchant woftware creates a new address at the checkout and waits until the total confirmed amount received at this address is at least as big as the cost of the order. Sending 0.0999 would just make the merchant wait until you send another 0.01.

But please note! you said 0.999 (rather than 0.0999), which is way more than the order amount you typed as 0.1!

You don't want to do this mistake. I did it one time (I sent a hundred times a very small order amount) but the merchant sent the excess amount back without causing any problems.
127  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: POLL: What to name UK Bitcoin exchange on: April 21, 2014, 04:53:11 PM
There used to be a site called "britcoin" and the name was brilliant. They disappeared though.
128  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I can't find any information on Nick Szabo, is he is who he says he is? on: April 20, 2014, 07:17:51 PM
Bitcoin creator is 100% Satoshi Nakamoto or we don't really know? Also how Satoshi Nakamoto and Nick Szabo are related? Do you think Nick Szabo could be the creator of bitcoin?

There is another possibility. Szabo wrote his essay about Bit Gold in 2005. What if Satoshi Nakamoto plagiarized parts of his essay and incorporated some of the ideas in his paper on Bitcoin in 2008?

Yes, these language analysis people don't have proof. Szabo is/was the main expert on cryptocurrencies and he published a lot about it online. The Bitcoin paper is EXPECTED to use the same words/termiology as Szabo and Bitgold. It's also perfectly possible that the Bitcoin paper avoids mentioning Bitgold just because it's heavily influenced by it. I've seen people do this all the time at the Universities.

The language analyses point out things like using timestamped as a verb and phrases like "trusted third parties", "for our purposes" and commas after and and but.

According to this I am likely Satoshi Nakamoto in the same way the narrator is Tyler Durden in Fight Club. This way of writing appears to be just normal to me.

If I had to bet my money on who is Satoshi Nakamot, I would still put it on Szabo, though.
129  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ron Paul says Bitcoin is not "True Money". on: April 19, 2014, 07:52:16 PM
Ron Paul also says that Bitcoin should be perfectly legal on not taxed. This should be the headline instead.
130  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Nobel Prize in Economics on: April 12, 2014, 09:18:56 PM
Award Satoshi the Nobel Prize in economics, that 'll flush him out!  Tongue

If he wins the Nobel prize in economics, he would be in the same club as Paul Krugman.

If you expand to the grand Nobel prize club of all different categories, you get an even worse list:
Yasser Arafat
Barack Obama
Al Gore
European Union

Obviously the Nobel prize has lost all its credibility.

But Milton Friedman won the economics prize in 1976 so giving it to Satoshi could be move to save the destroyed brand of the Nobel prizes.
131  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why satoshi doesn't come forward on: April 10, 2014, 09:08:19 PM
For anyone that doesn't know: Here is satoshi's bct account; inactive since 2010.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=3

This account is supposedly completely disabled by bitcointalk admins in order to not give hackers something to brute force. May be why his last post "I am not Dorian Nakamoto" was made on the peertopeer foundation site.
132  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Research: Poll on: April 10, 2014, 05:20:58 AM
Silly quiz with poorly thought out questions and insufficient options for answers.

Have fun.  Good luck.

Could you point out the points how the questionnaire could be improved?

Why would anyone want to put their full name in the Google Docs database?
133  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Let's get the facts straight about Apple. on: April 08, 2014, 03:15:47 AM
Well, I was right Sad

This "community" is one-sided when it comes to cold, hard, facts. Farewell, one-sided Bitcoin community, it's been nice knowing ya.

I don't mind facts. Sure, Apple has a reason for removing Bitcoin apps and it can be explained. So what?

The fact is that it's best to stay away from Apple, no matter how their behaviour is explained, it's still a fact.
134  Economy / Gambling / Re: I want to gamble!!! on: April 07, 2014, 03:17:24 AM
I'm sure someone could set up a site to automate your bet. It would have to be at least the block after the next though.

Big miners could actually get an edge by betting on a pool and then switching to mine on it. They would have to have a couple of % of the total hashing power though Cheesy
135  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why satoshi doesn't come forward on: April 06, 2014, 03:50:40 AM
Satoshi is not, but most definitely some others. How do people get deceived so easily? It is painful watching the $1200 holders try to rally in speculation. It does take a while to come out of the matrix and understand all of this completely. Shame on media hyping this up too. The ideology just proves the strength of the almighty $ It has survived decades and the set the standards. It will for a long time to come as well. I am sure there will be more slaughtered down the road by reading here how this is all actually a million dollars per bitcoin and get tempted to play the poker game. Just get the chips and get ready.

I am getting ready to go through the bitcoin statement of cash flows to properly evaluate the stock price  Roll Eyes

The "almighty $" has lost 95.6% of it's purchasing power since the Federal Reserve came into existence. There are claims that it's still doing well compared to other currencies. Sure, in the land of the blind, the one-eyed is king, but Bitcoin is completely above governments struggling to stay afloat by inflation taxation. That's the whole point with Bitcoin
136  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Transaction confirmation time down on: April 04, 2014, 05:44:47 PM
There's only two things that can change the confirmation time:
1. The current fork uses a slightly modified code that has smaller target that gives faster confirmations.
2. The hash rate increased rapidly and it will take a little time for the difficulty to adjust to set the average block to 10 minutes.

In this case it's for sure (2) that is the answer.
137  Economy / Speculation / I'm All In on: April 03, 2014, 04:26:38 AM
OP's subject should have been: "I'm Out - and hoping to buy back at a lower price."

OR he wouldn't bother to post it here.
138  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best quote from Satoshi on: April 01, 2014, 05:46:28 AM
This quote shows also that he's probably not that young since he knows about the time sharing computers in the nineties. And indeed a great quote. Clearly showing the trust deficiency in the current money system.
139  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: So..conspiracy? on: March 31, 2014, 05:11:08 AM
So..conspiracy?

1. Emergence of major BTC hedge funds
2. IRS declares that the capital gains tax on property will be imposed on BTC
3. China bans BTC, again.

Wow
many head found
much tax
very ban
so conspiracy
140  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Apple Users on: March 31, 2014, 04:58:24 AM
Apple/iPhone were always over-priced. But they managed somehow to market it as "hip and exclusive" even though it was always mainstream(wtf).
