Attention GPUMAX Users

Over the past month we've been dealing with massive load changes due to users allowing others to mine on their accounts. This is not only unfair for those sitting on the waitlist but also makes it very hard for us to control the growth during the beta.  While our ultimate goal is to allow anyone to use our service, we just don't have the time to deal with uncontrollable growth and develop the platform at the same time.

Effective tomorrow (Friday 06/29/2012 12:00am CST), accounts with the following activity will be suspended.

  • Any account with miners connected on 2 or more IP addresses from different subnets.

No other limitations will be made at this time. If we continue to see issues, additional actions will be taken.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Got a call the other day from my bank... They were freaked out by someone logging into my account from USA.

Well, that someone was me using a VPN, something that quite common in China.

I think GeoIP is the wrong tool at the hands of some people, there're fracturing the internet with it.

They suspend bank accounts, I once had a Paypal account termited by logging in from the wrong country, blocking people by country or internet provider...

Now they're suspending GPUMax accounts with it.

Does anyone think this is good?

If you only knew what you were talking about. Sad

From what I've gathered, Maged slipped on a stale hot pocket (pepperoni) and spilled his Malava Novocaine drink all over the back of the server.  It just needed to dry out a bit before the system came back up.

Warning! Smoke signals are often mistranslated.

Would there really be significantly more abuse if the limit was two addressess instead of one? I don't claim to know how the abusers are spreading work, but I know that people mine at home and at work, for example. Of course there will be people who legitimately mine at more than two locations, but the home / work locations are pretty common for obvious reasons.

We realize that people have multiple locations but for every user that's legitimately using the service from multiple locations there are 5 that aren't.  I don't want this to sound like we don't care or don't appreciate your business but the waiting list is gigantic.

Update

Hey guys, I'm sorry for the wait.  I had to take a last minute trip to deal with some things, which was suppose to be a quick one day trip but turned into two long days.  I was unprepared and on the road for much longer than anticipated.  I would have posted something about the delays prior to leaving if I knew it would be so long.

I can assure you all is well, again I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

More to come...

So why isn't this magical private pool not listed in the allow list in the GPUMAX thread?
Users can't add their own private pools for load testing, and yet here is one that isn't public that people are mining to.

This is starting to stink. Perfect avenue for on-demand Finney attacks just like gmaxwell was worried about.
I mined here on the understanding that only the pools listed were allowed.

The pool isn't used by our users, it's only used by us at this point.  Early on it was used for testing and streamlining getwork and long poll connections from our servers.  Testing things with our system on public pools it's not something pool ops enjoy.

In the coming weeks we'll be releasing a new phase of GPUMAX that the private pool plays a role in.
132  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Flurry of blocks from 24.211.152.165 on: June 21, 2012, 06:10:12 PM
Coins are always moving in and out of various wallets within my projects.  We don't monitor for "tainted" coins nor do I care about them moving around my wallets.  Coins are coins and I treat them all the same.

The private pool is not owned or operated by GPUMAX.
133  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Flurry of blocks from 24.211.152.165 on: June 21, 2012, 04:54:55 PM
i dunno, that is pretty interesting

i guess we know when ppl are buying mining shares now!

The coins are mined on a 3rd party private pool that we use for testing, load balancing and soon to be part of a upcoming release.
134  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Flurry of blocks from 24.211.152.165 on: June 21, 2012, 04:50:11 PM
The following address is managed by GPUMAX.

Sorry it wasn't more interesting. Sad

Can someone please tell me if the today payments are out already?

I'm not a BS&T customer, but I want to buy some more PPT bonds and wonder about the risk of buying them now - overpriced, though yet before the dividends are paid.

They are going out now, I had a late start this morning. Smiley

just don't get yourself killed - and everything will be fine Smiley

In the event I did die, my lenders will be handsomely rewarded via the dead man's switch.

Yea, lots of updates are getting pushed out.  Not everything works just yet but we'll get it going ASAP.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback.

Update

We're doing some updates to the system but with the massive loads caused by deepbit being down it's slowing down the update process.
