Charlie Shrem ‘Committed No Misconduct’ Says Lawyer as Winklevoss Lawsuit Continues

An attorney for embattled Bitcoin Foundation founder Charlie Shrem formally hit back on Nov. 5 at accusations by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss as part of an ongoing lawsuit concerning alleged Bitcoin (BTC) theft.

In a filing addressing the Winklevosses’ claims, attorney Brian E. Klein said Shrem, who is under investigation for allegedly “stealing” 5000 bitcoins ($32 million) from the twins in 2012, had “committed no misconduct.”

“Shrem can show by verifiable evidence that he did not take the 5,000 bitcoins (the Winklevosses) accuse him of taking,” the filing reads.

As Cointelegraph reported, the lawsuit against Shrem involves a convoluted history spanning six years. The result of a falling out over a deal to help the Winklevosses accrue cryptocurrency, Shrem had also lost the billionaires as business partners in his now-defunct exchange project BitInstant.

Shrem subsequently spent a year in jail on separate charges related to BitInstant, not involving the twins.

In September, however, the same judge in charge of the previous proceedings agreed to partly freeze Shrem’s assets amid accusations by the Winklevosses he had failed to pay almost $1 million in restitution to the state as part of his plea deal.

This, Klein continues, is also incorrect, countering:

“The true facts are that Shrem paid a portion of the money owed before he knew of the (Winklevosses’) complaint, and is in the process of paying the rest.”

Klein also denounced the idea Shrem had used the 5,000 BTC in question to purchase assets such as cars and property as having “no basis in fact or law.”

Shrem himself has not responded to a request for comment from Cointelegraph sent Nov. 2.

125  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: There are too many ICO, why? on: November 04, 2018, 02:08:47 AM
Yup, there are too many ICO's out there, but only few of this is real, because most of them are created only to raise funds since they seen that here in crypto world you can easily earn money specially if you have skill in programming.
126  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: EOS is next Ethereum on: November 03, 2018, 02:09:32 PM
Eos is a good coin but I don't think that eos will surpass the ethereum, both coins have different unique platform's, but when it comes in popularity ethereum is the first and mostly of the new projects now are using their platform's.

US Man Faces up to 5 Years in Prison for ‘Unlicensed’ Bitcoin Sales via LocalBitcoins

A U.S. citizen has pled guilty before a federal court to operating an “unlicensed money transmitting business” via LocalBitcoins.com, according to a Department of Justice (DoJ) press release published Oct. 29.
The man, Jacob Burrell Campos, has reportedly admitted to “selling hundreds of thousands of dollars” in Bitcoin (BTC) “to over 1,000 customers” in the U.S. between Jan. 2015-April 2016, thus deemed to effectively be operating what the DoJ characterizes as an unregistered “Bitcoin exchange.”

Availing himself of the popular peer-to-peer platform LocalBitcoins.com, Burrell reportedly failed to register his business activities with the U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) of the U.S. Department of Treasury, and to apply due diligence (such as anti-money-laundering (AML) measures) on the sources of his clients’ funds.

According to the release, after advertising on LocalBitcoins, Burrell negotiated his Bitcoin sales at a commission of 5 percent above the prevailing rate, “often” using encrypted email or SMS apps to communicate with clients. He is reported to have accepted payment either cash in hand, through ATMs, or through MoneyGram.

Burrell further admitted that his account on an unnamed “U.S.-based, regulated” crypto exchange had been closed after coming under scrutiny for “suspicious” transactions. He then turned to a Hong Kong-based platform, through which he is said to have purchased $3.29 million worth in Bitcoin between March 2015-April 2017 in “hundreds” of individual transactions.

The press release lastly outlines that Burrell has admitted that he exchanged his U.S. fiat currency, which he stored in Mexico, with a San Diego-based precious metals dealer, Joseph Castillo. The latter has reportedly pleaded guilty to making a false declaration on his federal tax returns, for which he awaits sentencing Dec. 13.

Burrell and unnamed “others” are said to have daily imported over $1 million between late 2016 and early this year, in amounts just below the $10, 000 threshold at which the money would have to be declared.

Burrell will be sentenced Feb. 11 2019, facing a maximum sentence of five years behind bars. He has agreed to forfeit over $800,000 to the U.S. in his plea agreement.

The press release cites U.S. attorney Adam Braverman as saying that:

“Unlicensed money transmitting businesses, especially those operating at or near the border, pose a serious threat to the integrity of the US banking system, and provide an ‘open door’ for criminals to utilize such businesses to launder the proceeds of their illicit activities.”

As reported this June, an L.A.-based trader, who acted under the pseudonym “Bitcoin Maven,” was prosecuted for running an unregistered multi-million dollar Bitcoin-fiat money transmitting business, also via a LocalBitcoins.com listing.

There's a lot of successful ICO's on market, but only few of them has a real usage since mostly of the coins are being created for collecting money from the investors, for me, only ethereum has a real usage because a lot of the projects now are using their technology.

AMD: ‘Blockchain-Related GPU Sales in Third Quarter Were Negligible’

In its quarterly financial results report published Oct. 24, semiconductor manufacturer AMD reveals that “blockchain-related graphics processing unit (GPU) sales in the third quarter were negligible.”

American semiconductor company AMD stated in its third quarter 2018 financial report that revenue rose to $1.65 billion, up 4 percent year-over-year, although the figure is below estimates of $1.7 billion. The decrease is attributed to overall lower graphic revenue in the company’s Computing and Graphic business segment since last quarter.

Nevertheless, AMD’s Computing and Graphic segment revenue saw a 12 percent increase year-over-year up to $938 million primarily due to strong sales of Ryzen desktop and mobile products. Blockchain-related GPU sales were not significant in the third quarter. The average selling price of GPUs also decreased due to lower GPU channel sales.

Previously, AMD CEO Lisa Su said that blockchain technology was “a bit of a distraction, in the short term” for AMD’s business. She admitted the importance of the technology however, stating that “the idea you can do all these peer-to-peer transactions, a decentralized network, it’s a good technology.”

In the first quarter of 2018, Su noted better-than-expected growth in her company, further stating that rather than getting caught up in the hype surrounding blockchain, they would focus on their core markets.

Per the AMD report, for the fourth quarter of 2018 AMD expects revenue to be around $1.45 billion, up approximately eight percent year-on-year; in the fourth quarter of 2017, revenue was reportedly $1.34 billion. The margin of adjusted earnings is expected to increase around 41 percent due to the sales growth of Ryzen, EPYC, and datacenter GPU processor sales.

After the report was release today, the AMD stock price slumped, closing down 9 percent to $22.79, according to Nasdaq. Reuters  attributes the drop in share price to lower than expected estimates for fourth quarter revenue.

Analysts have previously warned that AMD’s stock price was inflated by the cryptocurrency mining boom. Though AMD shares had seen substantial growth in the past months, the high share price may not last long should crypto mining quiet down, the analysts said.

Yup, and the majority of the coins in the market can be manipulated even those high volumes coins, Crypto markets it's too weak that's why it's easy to manipulate by big investors.

Hitachi and India’s Largest Gov’t-Owned Bank Partner on Major Digital Payments Platform

Hitachi Payments has partnered with the State Bank of India (SBI) to establish a nationwide digital payments platform, according to a press release published by Hitachi Oct. 29.

Under the aegis of the government’s “Digital India” campaign, Hitachi will provide SBI with solutions including its Internet-of-Things (IoT) platform "Lumada," which was implemented as the base platform for a major blockchain proof-of-concept (PoC) for supply chain management  undertaken with Japan’s Mizuho Financial Group last year.

Hitachi Payments is a wholly-owned subsidiary in India of multinational tech conglomerate Hitachi, which provides technology-led payment solutions for financial institutions. It reportedly has 55,000 ATMs and 850,000 point of sale (POS) devices (including mobile POS) under management in India.

Indian government-owned SBI is the largest commercial bank in the country, with 23 percent market share of assets and one quarter of the total deposits and loan market. According to the press release, it serves over 420 million customers and manages over 6,00,000 POS terminals.

The Hitachi Payments-SBI joint venture is pitched as a bid to accelerate the “digitalization” of financial services in India by harnessing Lumada and other cutting-edge technological solutions in order to expand the digital service business in the country. Hitachi Payments has reportedly been providing services for SBI’s digital payment acceptance network as of 2011.

134  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Good recent bounty campaigns? on: October 27, 2018, 03:45:05 PM
There's a lot of bounty campaign coming out in the bounty section but only a few of these are profitable and it is difficult also to find if which ones, but I have some methods if how to find out, such as reading their white paper, do some background check to the team behind the project, look for their telegram community if huge or small, this is 70% accurate to find a good campaign.
135  Local / Pamilihan / Re: Lottery price to cryptocurrency on: October 27, 2018, 08:47:44 AM

Or mahirap ? Kasi kung kunti lang ang tatayaan mo mas maliit ang chances na manalo ka.
136  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Who controls the market? on: October 26, 2018, 12:41:29 PM
I think only 40% of market are controlled by big investors especially those high volumes coin, Only those low volume coins are fully controlled by big investors, That's why it's easy for them to manipulate.
137  Local / Pilipinas / Re: Mangyayari paba ang bullrun ngayong taon ? on: October 25, 2018, 12:21:44 PM

Police Arrest Indian Crypto Exchange Co-Founder for Unregistered ‘Illegal’ Bitcoin ATM

The co-founder of Indian crypto exchange Unocoin has been arrested shortly after setting up an allegedly unregistered Bitcoin (BTC) ATM machine in Bangalore, English-language daily Times of India reports Oct. 24.

The 37-year-old co-founder, Harish BV, was apprehended by police after having reportedly  installed the ATM kiosk at Kemp Fort Mall on Old Airport Road, together with fellow Unocoin co-founder Sathvik Viswanath. The latter has not been arrested, as per media reports.

Indian business magazine Business Today (BT) cites a press statement from the Central Crime Branch (CCB), which claims the ATM installation did not receive “any permission from the state government and is dealing in cryptocurrency outside the remit of the law."

CCB officials are further reported to have seized “a teller machine, two laptops, a mobile, three credit cards, five debit cards, a passport, five seals of Unocoin company, a cryptocurrency device and Rs 1.8 lakh ($2,460).”

140  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: will Altcoins Survive on: October 21, 2018, 01:32:10 PM
Will Altcoins survive as bitcoin is going higher and higher and the demand is getting increasing every day, what will happens to altcoins
Some altcoins will go along the bitcoin price increased since there are also some potential altcoins that can go over the bitcoin, Only those low volumes altcoins will not survive because investors are likely to invest bitcoin than altcoins.
