12221  Economy / Services / Re: Introducing the Bitcoin 100: A Kickstarter for Charities on: November 24, 2012, 11:25:09 PM
I just happened across something that is possibly disturbing to me:

Quote
Bitcoin 100 will gladly donate 100 bitcoins (100 BTC), approximately $1,200 USD (current exchange rate), to your venerable organization. There is only one tiny string attached prior to us contributing said donation. The caveat I speak of has already been accepted by a couple other non-profits of which I'll provide proof momentarily.

How long after they put this donation badge on their website do they receive the 100 BTC?  (i.e., if they add this they do then right away receive the funds?)

Well, I personally find your quote a bit too dramatic. It's no big deal to put up a new donation option/adress. This quote makes it sound like selling your soul to the devil or the like..

Took me 1 hour to find on my dual core laptop with vanitygen.
https://blockchain.info/address/1LPofATXV8gjuWu24v591YmGFn828k3wZV

As soon as that transaction confirms the firstbits for 1LPofA will be taken.

Great. With this hasty move you removed every option to generate that vanity adress with provable "only we have the priv key" for them.
People may trust you here. Donations may be a small sums game.
But you might be shocked to learn that real business (tm) might not accept to have a funds accepting account where some stranger(s) have unlimited access to. I don't even believe that bitpay would want to touch this adress.
However, there are unlimited more adresses with those starting bits. Not with those firstbits though.

Ente

I'm not exactly sure what Stephen's concern is about, but if I didn't address it properly, I'm sure he'll readdress the issue.

As far as the address and private key are concerned, I'm under in the impression that the address can be passed and a new private key (password) can be hashed. Somebody correct me if I'm deeply mistaken here.

~Bruno K~

EDIT: (we cross-post)

Shortly after they have done such, as we've done previously for two other charitable organizations. There may be a little lag time, but not much.

Ok, sorry.  I was concerned that the funds would need to be collected from pledges first and the possibility that the deal might not be honored in a timely manner if collections fell short.

To be fair, even though there are well over 100 bitcoins in the current pool, that does not necessarily mean that there's a 100 BTC immediately available, therefore your concern is warranted. The bottom line is that once LPA accepts, we will know how short we are and a quick fund drive should get the desired amount up to snuff.

12224  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin for Backpackers (remote places w/o ATM) on: November 24, 2012, 08:00:41 PM
Ahhh, the way I see it Couchsurfing and bitcoin go very well together - at least in the sense of the general open ethos of both things, I would of thought people that were open to the idea of opening there home to strangers would also be into the idea of bitcoin, nothing about exchanging one for the other!.

I was just as awed by the ideas Couchsurfing as I was by bitcoin (ok, maybe more so with bitcoin.... but still).

I've been considering traveling lately, and have just put the idea of bitcoin and travel together in my head (whilst trying to come up with a blog concept), I may well end up backpacking the world with bitcoins one day Smiley

I plan to do the same - travel around Europe couchsurfing to the places that accept bitcoin (Berlin springs to mind). Let me know if you want company! I couchsurfed in the Summer and gave 1BTC as a thank-you to the people I visited. They must have thought WTF.

Ente has been in contact with these people if this is what you're looking for: http://www.bewelcome.org/main

Hopefully, BeWelcome comes on board and accepts Bitcoin 100's proposal. Here is their donation page: http://www.bewelcome.org/donate

Aside from the rest of the PITA process, a notary isn't free.  Cheapest I know of around here is $10.

You can often get stuff notarized for free at your bank  Grin

I'd like to know where you bank?

I've been told the same thing in the past, went to the bank and got to the notary, who then asked me what I needed before referring me to an outside notary.  Turned out both my banks are only free for banking related documents.  Eg, if I want to close a loan there.

I kindly ask, and receive, said services from my insurance agent. But, then again, I'm the one that fills up the candy dishes at her office--weekly--so that I have a better choice of sweets when I visit.

You fill up both her candy dishes?

Actually, there's three, but I don't think that's what you're in reference to. I buy the bags of candy and stand back watching her fill them up, for that's what I'm into.

Just checked,, no tsunami advisory. Nowhere. At all. On the whole globe.

Not true. There were major Tsunami waves today in my toilet, after gigantic body of unknown materials hitted the water!  Cheesy

Dark or white turds? I have a theory.

Quite frankly, I'm getting tired of correcting your errors.  Grin

Thanks for the post, Erik.

~Bruno K~

Your link doesn't mention the 500 btc donation, and that post of his was before his donation. So this is new news, Mr. Bruno Smiley

Well, your avc.com doesn't mention any 500 btc donation either, so there. You mess with me one more time, and I'm going to show the community that you got that mask you wear out of Genjix's closet.  Grin

Please take a look at the following thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=127522.0

It's an open letter to LPA. I want to tweet the URL to them tomorrow, but desire any input prior to me doing so. The thread is locked, so please state your concerns on this thread.

Thank you.

~Bruno K~

I'm going to tweet the link to the thread now.

Seems like it'd make more sense to ask them on BFLs own forums.

I'm just looking for some insight on this address. That is all. I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not.

If this is a mute issue, I wish to thank whoever is behind this address for your donations to Bitcoin 100.

Dank = master of vague generalities.

I think even the Hindus missed this one.

A person thought to be instructed by God is a what?

In this case there are competing hypotheses. I don't like people dumbing down science, or misrepresenting it (albeit an accidental misrepresentation). In the end you finish up with "the Bermuda Triangle" and spoonbending.

My humorous post was bringing attention to myself, acting as a Grammar Nazi.

Can we now get back on topic? All this talk about big, fat mammals is making me horny.

That's pretty fun, haha. You should start using another client for transactions now and keep your pi intact. Novelty wallet.

Better yet, everybody should purposely fund a personal pi wallet (ppw), not to be touched until some arbitrary exchange rate has been achieved.

Then a thread would need to be created for those to show off there ppw. Anybody tapping into their ppw will be chastised on said thread, and then be excluded from the club.
