1281  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Satoshi is "WE" not "I". on: May 06, 2014, 07:19:23 PM
Another silly thread about the fantasy that Satoshi is a group of multiracial  LGTB agents working for the NSA.

Satoshi is one person, a man, white, and probably American.  He got the idea from reading Nick Szabo's blog, or from direct communication with Nick Szabo, or because he is Nick Szabo.
1282  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A new unit=1/1000000BTC. Bit is already taken, how to call a new unit/symbol? on: May 04, 2014, 11:50:45 PM
and most understand micro is milionth

That's a fantasy, not reality.  The vast majority of people in the world do not understand SI prefixes.  Most people are familiar with kilo, centi, and milli.  Very few people know what the others mean.
1283  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A new unit=1/1000000BTC. Bit is already taken, how to call a new unit/symbol? on: May 04, 2014, 08:30:10 PM
The fact that Jeff garzik or Bitpay favors bit (at the moment only!) should matter little or none at all for a wide consensus.

It isn't too surprising that Bitpay would favor "bit".  I'm glad that they are doing the decent thing and  aren't pushing that particular name too hard.
1284  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A new unit=1/1000000BTC. Bit is already taken, how to call a new unit/symbol? on: May 04, 2014, 08:05:59 PM
You forgot to include most of the most popular choices: bitcoin, zib, and centoshi.  Your choices are all very similar.
1285  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A new unit=1/1000000BTC. Bit is already taken, how to call a new unit/symbol? on: May 04, 2014, 08:04:54 PM
it seems the consensus is just going with bit

According to my poll, more than 60% of people do not want "bit".  They did not pick as their first or even second choice.  So no, only a very vocal minority wants "bit".  The rest of us are using polls to try to figure out what the consensus will be.
1286  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What should 100 satoshis be called? (make sure to vote for TWO choices) on: May 04, 2014, 06:34:53 AM
Thank god the majority of votes are NOT for 'bit'.  Roll Eyes

Yes, it is true that "bit" is not the first or even second choice of a majority of people.

However none of the others have a majority yet, so it is clear that we are a long way from a consensus.  51% isn't enough; we need more like 85%.  Otherwise people will ignore the newly named unit and just keep working with bitcoins.

That's actually one strength of switching the definition of the word "bitcoin".  Unlike the other options, it only takes a majority to force the switch.
1287  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ƶ = µBTC on: May 04, 2014, 04:01:46 AM
I have been lobbying for McDonalds to change their golden arches to a Z for years.

For some reason they do not want to do that.

Why wouldn't McDonalds want a cool Z logo?

Didn't you hear?  They switched just yesterday.

1288  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin can never be 1000+ dollars again because of all the new coins on: May 04, 2014, 03:55:36 AM
Altcoins are just a hobby; they aren't competition for bitcoin.  Not only are they just a hobby, but they are a hobby that requires bitcoin to buy into.  Altcoins actually make bitcoin *more* valuable.
1289  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ƶ = µBTC on: May 04, 2014, 03:46:17 AM
It says "your new favorite altcoin".

That's just silly marketing.  Zibcoin is just another name for Bitcoin.
1290  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ƶ = µBTC on: May 04, 2014, 03:43:35 AM
I would love to see exchange quote the price as 2274Ƶ for $1.

Many people would want to buy in, if only with a dollar.  As the value of Ƶ goes up you would get fewer and fewer Ƶ for a dollar, highlighting the scarcity.
1291  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ƶ = µBTC on: May 04, 2014, 03:37:53 AM
Still trying to pump zibcoin  Undecided

Zibcoin is not an altcoin.  You know that.  You're just trying to spread misinformation.
1292  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What should 100 satoshis be called? (make sure to vote for TWO choices) on: May 04, 2014, 12:48:23 AM
"centoshi" has been added, in accordance with popular demand.  You can change your votes on this poll.  Please make sure to vote for two.
1293  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What should 100 satoshis be called? (make sure to vote for TWO choices) on: May 03, 2014, 06:42:33 PM
Please make sure to vote for two choices.  If you only voted for one you can go back and change your vote.

Voting for two choices helps build consensus.
1294  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Revised Poll (more choices): What should 100 satoshis be called? on: May 03, 2014, 06:37:10 PM
Informally, "k" is a common nickname for thousand but most currencies predate metric (and even SI). One interesting exception is "cent" - the revolutionary zeal in the new-born US presumed that the metric system would catch on, and the proposed pefix for hundreds - "centi-" - was adopted for the hundredth division of a dollar - a year or two, I think, before France adopted metric.

The dollar is broken into cents, not centidollars.  The cent symbol is ˘ rather than c$.

The Euro had the opportunity to be a metric currency, but it isn't.
1295  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Revised Poll (more choices): What should 100 satoshis be called? on: May 03, 2014, 06:19:06 PM
Is there anywhere else in the field of money that people use SI prefixes?

I have never heard of a kilodollar, megadollar, millidollar, etc.  Does any country use SI prefixes for their money?

I'm pretty sure there there is no metric currency in the world.  If people actually wanted a metric currency they had a great opportunity: the creation of the Euro.  The fact that the Euro is not metric seems to be pretty strong evidence that the world will never have metric currency.
1296  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Revised Poll (more choices): What should 100 satoshis be called? on: May 03, 2014, 05:38:56 PM
I don't think that word means what you think it means.

I know exactly what it means.  The purpose of this poll is not to determine the consensus, but to build it.  This poll will let people know what choices other people prefer.  Most people who support unpopular choices will recognize that and start considering the more popular choices.  So the result of this poll will be that popular choices are strengthened at the expense of weaker choices.  This gets us closer to consensus.
1297  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What should 100 Satoshis be called? on: May 03, 2014, 05:09:06 PM
please continue the discussion and vote in the revised poll for what to call 100 satoshis:

1298  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What should 100 satoshis be called? (make sure to vote for TWO choices) on: May 03, 2014, 05:05:01 PM
EDIT: PLEASE MAKE SURE TO VOTE FOR TWO

I think that I wasn't getting many people voting in the poll because there were too few choices.  So I added a bunch of popular choices.  If we each just vote for one it will be hard to come to a consensus, so vote for two.
1299  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How United are the States? on: May 03, 2014, 06:48:27 AM

Does each state have a strong collective identity, or is it rarely expressed?

Yes, and yes.  Americans seem to be oblivious to the fact that Americans in different parts of the empire are very different from one another.  Yet the entire history of the US is ethnic strife between regions.  Take the Civil War for example.  The North says that it was about slavery, the South says that it was about states' rights.  Both views true but superficial.  The truth is that New Englanders and Southerners don't get along and both sides wanted to expand their way of life into the western territories.

Due to our two party system, the various ethnicities have to form coalitions.  So right now New England and the Pacific regions are with the Democrats, and the Interior West and the South are with the Democrats.  The Midwest is the swing region.  These coalitions hide many of the regional differences.  For example the Republicans of Georgia and Wyoming have very little in common.

Because Americans do not acknowledge the fact that American politics are driven by ethnicity people use proxies to distinguish friend from foe.

Modern US politics is dominated by really trivial issues, that we call "wedge issues".  The US is in a very secure situation.  The idea of a military invasion is inconceivable and so US foreign policy can be capricious rather than focused on strategic concerns.  So things of no importance to the US drive the foreign policy, such as the latest in Israeli settlement activity or gay rights in Russia.  These things cannot possibly affect Americans, and yet they receive a huge amount of attention.

Other issues are just as trivial.  The more passionate people are about an issue the more likely it is to be a wedge issue.  It is really just like people's loyalties to sports teams, entirely silly.

But remember that this is all under the surface.  Many people just look at themselves and their neighbors and say "we are Americans".  They have no real awareness that by defining themselves as "Americans" only they are therefore defining the term in such a way that it doesn't fit other Americans, which is what causes the petty struggles that dominate US politics.

For example, is there any obvious disquiet about the disproportionate contribution to the economic situation that somes states seem to have contributed?

Yes.  Many resent the fact that all of our money goes to DC, NYC, their surroundings (Maryland, Connecticut, New Jersey) and a few other places favored by the elite.  Sometimes you will see an absurd map floating around claiming the opposite, these maps show DC, Maryland, and NYC being the ones supporting the rest of the country.  Ha.  DC's only export is government.  NYC's main export is banking (meaning that they are pulling money from the rest of the country).  Maryland is just where DC workers live.  For example we live in Maryland because my wife works in DC.  She works in DC because DC prints the money.  We would rather live somewhere else, but other places don't have the ability to print infinite money.  If bitcoin ever replaces the dollar we will see a total collapse of DC, NYC, and a few other places.
1300  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What should 100 Satoshis be called? on: May 03, 2014, 01:17:16 AM
You're missing lots of options that have been proposed:

microbitcoin
microbits
micros
mics
µBTC
uBits
crobits
zib

It's not much use as a poll if you've already limited it to your two favorites, including one (renaming "bitcoin") that's nearly impossible to pull off without major confusion and risk of money-losing errors.

I did not pick my favorites.  I am deeply opposed to "bits" but I included it in the poll, because it is popular.  None of options on your list (one of which I came up with) have a chance of being accepted.  So no, I did not include the one that I came up with (which I would have done if I were playing favorites) and instead I included the one that is pure confusion ("bits").  Redefining how many satoshi's to a bitcoin would not cause major confusion.  In theory it would, but in reality it wouldn't.
