1281  Economy / Service Announcements / CoinURL ceases its operation on: January 16, 2013, 08:22:20 PM
When I have launched CoinURL a half year ago I believed that quality Bitcoin advertising network is necessary for the market and will be profitable enough. I have seen large interest from the users, number of publishers and advertisers grown all time, but not the profits.

Average CPC and CPM rates for the Bitcoin-related ads are much lesser comparing to the non-Bitcoin. I think it can be explained that large ad networks like Google AdSense target their ads to the middle-class customers with relatively high income. Unfortunately, at this moment, Bitcoin user audience differ in this way so advertisers don't see a reason to spend large amounts on advertising. I hope this will change in the future.

All time CoinURL's expenditures had been not so big because it was located on the cheap shared hosting. Unluckily, as you could guess, hosting company decided to terminate my account as it is not just worth for them anymore. CoinURL had heavy backend and to handle requests with acceptable response time it requires high-end VPS or even physical server, which would cost at least 4-5 BTC/month. Paying these amounts would lead me into the loss, so I had no other choice than to close CoinURL at all.

If you had unspent clicks and impressions on the CoinURL I can transfer your ads to the other ad places I have. In this case just write your CoinURL username and password to the info@coinurl.com. I will do this manually, so don't abuse it with negligible small amounts.

CoinURL domains "coinurl.com" and "cur.lv" are for sale!

Short links will continue to work at least before February 1, 2013.

You cannot leave your site offline for longer than 12 days.
As I said before, hosting's admin promised to restore operation tomorrow. I really don't have free time now to configure new server...

Some user pointed me that using 24-bit number for determining number of the winning ticket is not enough and can have some skewness if the raffle have very large number of tickets (>1M). To improve quality of the RNG, I have increased length to 28 bits.

From January 15, 2013, 01:30 UTC following function will be used to determine the winner:

Code:
function getWinningTicket($nonce, $blockHash, $ticketsTotal)
{
    $hash = hash('sha256', $nonce . $blockHash);

    $randHex = substr($hash, strlen($hash) - 7, 7);
    $randDec = base_convert($randHex, 16, 10);

    return ($randDec % $ticketsTotal) + 1;
}

Any ETA available on restoration?
Hosting's admin said it would re-enable MySQL server for my account tomorrow (but with limited resources - he admitted in overselling and said he cannot give me full performance because other users complains).
I have exams soon, so I cannot spent much time on configuring the server within next 2 days.
1286  Economy / Scam Accusations / Beware "Double your BitCoin" on: January 14, 2013, 08:40:04 PM
Someone just posted an ad through Operation Fabulous on the Daily Bitcoins.

Quote
http://www.intratechmontreal.com/

For those of you that are aware of the digital currency Bitcoin: There has been discovered an exploit that utilizes a series of computers on an "isolated from the internet" back-network that participates in intercepting the data stream where the bitcoins are circulated/stored. The backnet of PC's run a series of algorithms that have the net effect of doubling the bitcoin amount sent to certain addresses. This happens for BOTH receiver and sender to certain bitcoin rcv address programed into the algorythm.

In other words you can double your bitcoins sent total in about 10 minutes

If you have the power to change it, would you please take off the "Please come back later!" part for when the problem is with ad slots? Because visitors of my website (specially first-time visitors) may think the problem is with my server and that they should come back later to my website, when it is operating properly and the overload is just in the ad slot, a problem that is actually out of my control.
It is my message. Now it returns just free page.

UPD. Redirect via short links restored!

1290  Economy / Service Announcements / Daily Bitcoins and CoinURL - problems with the server on: January 14, 2013, 07:43:43 PM
As you can see Daily Bitcoins and CoinURL don't work for some time. I contacted hosting's admin and he said that my sites generated high load on the server, therefore they decided to disable my account. I got many performance issues with this hosting in the past and most probably they just decided to reject some customers instead of upgrading hardware. Admin ever admitted in the overselling practices in private conversation.

I told all my frustration about this approach, threatened to start litigation again them (we have consumer rights protection bureau in Latvia, which solves small cases for free and with little paperwork)! They re-enabled my sites, but with limited resources. If you see some error messages, blame only this greedy hoster! Angry

Unfortunately I have little free time right now to move sites to the another server, but will do this certainly when be free (I hope VPS node I own is powerful enough to handle also Daily Bitcoins).
Few minutes ago I contacted the admin again, he promised to add more server resources to my sites tomorrow.

Take this accident into account if you ever decide to deal with the hosting provider "Nano.lv"!
1291  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Dailybitcoins.org is Down on: January 14, 2013, 02:56:21 PM
Yes, hosting's server is down again. Just sent e-mail to the admin.
1292  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [CoinURL] All ways to monetize your content! on: January 14, 2013, 12:54:23 AM
random suggestion: you should turn PHP error reporting off.. there has been several times that I have come to the site or tried to go to my profile where I was just given a blank page with PHP errors showing file paths and what lines of code the page failed on.. IMHO probably not a very good idea from a security standpoint, and PHP errors can show important database information as well. Just sayin
Error reporting helps me to understand what happens with the server (with this crappy cheap hosting it happens rather frequently). All scripts have protection against SQL injections, so I don't think it is a problem. CoinURL got many hacking attempts, all of them failed.
1293  Economy / Gambling / Re: Peerbet.org - Play without house edge! on: January 13, 2013, 06:18:25 PM
Some users had problems with "content-type" of the API responses. Now API will return a header "Content-Type: application/json".
1294  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [CoinURL] All ways to monetize your content! on: January 13, 2013, 03:41:37 PM
Column "expected earnings" you see on the "My ad slots" page was calculated according to our previous system, which had been replaced to
the more advanced few months ago, so these numbers are incorrect. To remove uncertainty I have deleted this field. Your real earnings are being displayed on the "Transactions" page.
1295  Economy / Gambling / Re: [Discussion] P2P Gambling: 100% break even odds... possible game changer? on: January 13, 2013, 03:19:06 PM
There is already a P2P gambling service with zero house edge and 100% payout: Peerbet.org!
1296  Economy / Gambling / Re: Peerbet.org - Play without house edge! on: January 12, 2013, 10:10:10 PM
question: how long it takes for a withdraw to get processed?
About 1 second for the instant withdrawals and 24 hours for the standard.

1300  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [Official announce] Daily Bitcoins and CoinURL server problems on: January 12, 2013, 06:06:30 PM
You cannot use a free service as a backup? just to keep the links up
I have another node which I can use for keeping links working, but "coinurl.com" and "cur.lv"  DNS records point to the shared hosting. DNS update could last longer than server outage, so it is just not worth.

Server up now!
