Η ιστορία επαναλαμβάνεται... Μα να μην έχει αλλάξει τίποτα;

This guy got robbed, got his Binance funds stolen, and after all... He took a picture of his upside-down room, and uploaded it to Twitter. Hasn't he learned his lesson yet?

Don't share with people that you own a coin
People you love can have that piece of information. It's a little bit of an asshole attitude to hide the fact that you're involved into bitcoin from your family and relatives. I mean, don't yell at it in a family gathering that you own 1.56 BTC, but for instance you should inform your other half about your belongings.

Θα ήθελα να ρωτήσω όμως, πόσους ανθρώπους έχετε καταφέρει να πείσετε να αποκτήσουν bitcoin σε self custody;

Tongue

1305  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: As a Bitcoin Core only user, how im supposed to pay someone in person? on: November 07, 2023, 09:37:02 AM
Im going to look at the Fairphone thing. Im familiar with Purism, their prices are a scam
That's exactly why I'm not buying any of those phones. They're overcharging; probably their targeted audience is privacy concerned users who aren't competent with phones. If you dig it up a little bit, you can buy yourself a 300 EUR worth of Pixel, with Graphene installed, and it'll be both more secure and private than any of those.

It is quite difficult to lug around everywhere (unless it's a macbook air or something else that's light), requires a WiFi access point, is inconvenient for scanning QR codes and is overall quite cumbersome to use for making payments when you're on the street.
  • Or just a small laptop.
  • You can use mobile data.
  • I guess they can send you the address over some communication channel if QR is not a practical option. In the worst, type the address.

Where are the flawed coinjoins?  Still waiting for evidence.  o_e_l_e_o never produced any.

Wasabi coinjoins creating outputs which can be 100% linked to a specific input: https://mempool.space/tx/dae13b2d015587a3033d7ab7949a7efa6d6ed7aa782168b0651ab37a2d8390f8
Wasabi coinjoins reusing addresses, leading to users being doxxed: https://nitter.it/ErgoBTC/status/1585671294783311872
Wasabi coinjoins using the same address on both sides of a transaction: https://mempool.space/tx/af50a27691c0f0b7b626cddb74445a0e26bb6ed7b045861067326ea173bc17d0 (address bc1qft2uze947wtdvvhdqtx00c8el954y6ekxjk73h)

o_e_l_e_o - Wasabi coinjoins are flawed.
Kruw - Show me the evidence.
o_e_l_e_o - Here's a bunch of flawed coinjoins.
Kruw - Bu-bu-but, here's a coinjoin which you cannot de-anonymize.

Extreme reasoning there. Wasabi team must be proud of you. Lol, I am now starting to get why Samourai puts their "competitor" in quotation marks every time.
1309  Other / Meta / Re: I don't have good account security. on: November 06, 2023, 08:02:53 PM
Your best course is to stake an address in here. Something like your address followed by a signed message; "BTC_pokaop here, staking my address in a shiny morning of November 6th, 2023".

You cannot recover a hacked account without a signed message: Recovering hacked/lost accounts. You can use strong, encrypted password and the like, but in the end, just as with Bitcoin, the private key provides evidence of ownership. Definitely backup a seed phrase which can be used to derive your staked address, and never use that wallet for any other purpose.

Hmm! Someone claims they can crack asymmetric cryptography with a smartphone, but we aren't allowed to know how. Somehow we are allowed to know they are capable of accomplishing it, tho.  Roll Eyes

Even if he was capable, which I bet he isn't, this would probably be one of the dumbest things to ever attempt to do. Stating publicly that you, <enter your full name>, have figured out a way to make most encrypted stuff, insecure, followed by a paper which demonstrates it. You would be found dead under a bridge in a random country before tomorrow morning. (If NSA hadn't managed to hire you yet)
1311  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: As a Bitcoin Core only user, how im supposed to pay someone in person? on: November 06, 2023, 07:34:33 PM
Is there any safe device that looks like a phone that runs Linux or something?
Over a dozen billion, called smartphones.  Tongue

No, seriously. Look. If you sell small amounts of bitcoin, then getting yourself a Pixel with GrapheneOS installed wouldn't be a bad idea. It comes a lot cheaper than Fairphone. The TL;DR of Graphene is that it focuses on security and privacy. That can work, and it doesn't make you look like a socially awkward fella with Arch Linux, having an NSFW anime-girl wallpaper. (No offense to those who do!  Tongue )

But seriously, why not a laptop? Having an Electrum wallet, running Ubuntu doesn't tell me anything. We are not living in the 00s anymore.
1312  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which wallet is safe for long term Bitcoin storage? on: November 06, 2023, 07:15:18 PM
It is hard for newbies to tell the difference between storing bitcoin in a centralized exchange and storing fiat in a bank account. There is chaotic difference, where do I begin.

- If a centralized exchange gets hacked, they go bankrupt, no funds for you. If a bank is hacked, transactions can be reversed.
- Even in a scenario where the bank goes bankrupt, there is legislation which grants you access to your money through deposit insurances; in the worst, the government intervenes.
- When deposing coins to a centralized exchange, you're agreeing this is practically not yours and that the company can use it however they like; many are caught implementing fractional reserve. (I know, the largest banks can do that too, but there is clearly lack of regulation here)
- Centralized exchanges are more frequently shut down, as they are targeted by hackers etc.
- There is no alternative to banking when it comes to electronic fiat. There is apparent alternative to using a centralized exchange; in fact, the very purpose of bitcoin is that alternative in the first place.
1313  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Wallet for Android / Re: Best wallet for Android? on: November 05, 2023, 06:24:06 PM
Hello, I've read your entire topic, and I'd like to share my opinion with you, I'd like to suggest Trust Wallet as one of the best wallets I've used It has an amazing work plan
Pardon me, but do you evaluate the wallet software only by the UI? Because, frankly, that is the only part of Trust wallet that I would find kinda appealing.

It is one of the worst pieces of wallet software in the Bitcoin ecosystem by far. It is closed-source, relies on somebody else's server to operate, and it owned by Binance. The three musketeers of a recipe for disaster in crypto space. Look on what happened with Atomic wallet. People lost fortunes and the developers didn't even tell us what went wrong. Re-installing a similar software is a sign of recklessness and lack of responsibility, simply put.
1314  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: bitcoin wallet on: November 05, 2023, 02:22:16 PM
In my opinion, the weakness of the bluewallet wallet is that it is not a wallet for storing large amounts of assets in the long term.
There is nothing inherently wrong with BlueWallet per se. It is in fact one of the most reputable and reviewed pieces of Bitcoin software in the space. It's the rationale; smartphones are the worst devices to trust with your bitcoin. There are too many things to account for when it comes to security implications; the integrity of the OS, the apps running in the background etc. It's generally the exact opposite of an air-gapped device; can practically connect to any network at any time.

@hollowdoor, if you're going to buy a decent amount of bitcoin, please take care of your security. There are numerous instances where individuals have lost their coins due to software exploits.
1315  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Linux: is wine a potential threat for our BTCs? on: November 05, 2023, 02:09:07 PM
It's not about Wine, it's about the programs you want to install. Are they open-source, reputable etc.? Wine is just a compatibility layer that allows you to run Windows applications. In general, no. It can't do great harm if you haven't given the respective privileges as it provides a degree of isolation. But, again, it depends; it absolutely isn't foolproof defense.

A better question would be: why use Wine, if for example Bitcoin Core can be directly used on Linux?
Maybe they want to install a Windows application separately, that could be completely irrelevant with Bitcoin (i.e., a game).
1316  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: is there a posibility someone could brueforce your wallet seed phrase ? on: November 05, 2023, 01:59:56 PM
An optimist would say you don't need to find all private keys, since many of them will lead to the same address.
No, but I want to demonstrate how many private keys there are.

The odds of finding a private key that corresponds to the same address, is about 1 in the 2^256 / 2^96 = 2^160. Even if you used 1000 super fast computers that make a total of 1 quadrillion searches per second, you'd still need more than 8 nonillion (10^30) days to cover half. If the age of the universe is 13.8 billion, then that'd be about 612,881,456,878,565,703 times the age of the universe.

So, yeah. We're pretty safe with that hypothesis.
1317  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: is there a posibility someone could brueforce your wallet seed phrase ? on: November 05, 2023, 08:55:36 AM
right but you left out that me walking to any grain of sand is a huge factor slower than having 1000 super fast pc's grinding out try after try after try.
Picture my analogy for a moment. Even if you had 1000 super-duper fast PC, trying 1 quadrillion private keys per second, you would only manage to find 0.013% of the grains of sand per second, for one planet Earth. It'd take you 7501 seconds, or about an hour and a quarter to find all grains of sand in one planet Earth, and you'd still have 999,999,999,999 planets left; it'd take more than 43 trillion days to cover just half of the total grains.

And after 86 trillion days, in glory and triumph, you'd have successfully searched 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000003% of the total private keys.
1318  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: is there a posibility someone could brueforce your wallet seed phrase ? on: November 04, 2023, 09:02:37 PM
Scientists estimate that Earth contains 7.5 sextillion sand grains. That is 75 followed by 17 zeros.
Lol. I wrote a great analogy to visualizing this earlier and used the same piece of information:
Let me put it in this perspective. There are estimated to be 7.5 quintillion grains of sand in the Earth; that's 7.5 x 10^18. Now ignore the shape of our solar system, and make the hypothesis that there are a trillion clones of Earth, spinning around the Sun. That'd make the total grains of sand in our Solar system about 7.5 x 10^30. Stupidly large number there. Imagine if I told you to guess my chosen grain of sand, across this uncountable set of grains, and that I picked one at random, maybe at some corner of an ocean from Earth #623,546,123,002, or at a replica of Egypt from Earth #881,239,303,566.

OP, read it. You'll get your answer. The difference between "being impossible" and being "being improbable" approaches zero.

Super computers are no match for 128 bit encryption.
Not even the total computational power provided for the security of the Bitcoin network can break anything beyond 90 bits.
1319  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Quantum Computers Can Not Defeat Bitcoin, not even The Bitcoin Network on: November 04, 2023, 06:32:24 PM
Put differently, a breakthrough in mathematics that breaks ECDSA requires a lot more priors than a breakthrough in QC.
Curiously, but:

- how sure are we that this assertion is true?
- would we still have the necessary resources given we find that breakthrough to accomplish this with classic computers?

Yes that's right. Quantum computers will not beat BTC, because quantum technology is needed for world progress, DLT, 4IR (smart city, IOT, AI).
I mean, how is even that relevant? Quantum computers "can" beat Bitcoin in theory, but we miss the resources to do it in practice, as far as I understand. And by the way, if it ever happens, it'd break the entire Internet, not just Bitcoin. Bitcoin can migrate to a quantum resistant algorithm long before it happens.
1320  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are the odds of guessing someone's private key or seedphrase? on: November 04, 2023, 02:48:41 PM
The odds of guessing someone's private key... Let me put it in this perspective. There are estimated to be 7.5 quintillion grains of sand in the Earth; that's 7.5 x 10^18. Now ignore the shape of our solar system, and make the hypothesis that there are a trillion clones of Earth, spinning around the Sun. Guess what. The number of these grains are not even the 0.0000000000001% of the total valid Bitcoin private keys.

Who says BTC keys are 10^77?
They just rounded it down. Yes, total private keys are about 2^256, but if you round it down, it's pretty much ~1.1579 * 10^77.
