lol..if a person himself wants to sucide then why the hell government or laws are interfaring in it :p thats so stupid like a person got arrested becase he talk to anyone strainger..I mean its not makes sence its his decisiin he can do whatever he wants

The government and the authorities have the responsibility to help that person by offering the necessary psychiatric counselling or medication. There can be a number of reasons for someone attempting suicide. It can be due to medical issues, bullying or blackmail, harassment, financial troubles, family failure.etc.

Unfortunately, current (Indian) laws make it a crime to attempt suicide, punishable by a jail term of up to one year. The government is working towards removing this, but I guess it will take time.
1322  Economy / Economics / Re: Do You Think Bitcoin Will Replace Dollar Soon? on: September 06, 2015, 04:12:50 AM
The bitcoin isnt going to replace the U.S dollar anytime soon. The government wouldn't let that happen. and im pretty sure cash is easier to deal with in person.
Bitcoin can only function as alternate currency, but it will never replace US dollar. US will create digital version of Dollar in the future with full control over it. Every attempt to replace dollar with other currency will be shut down exactly as Liberty Dollar were destroyed in the past.

When people talk about BTC replacing the USD, they are talking about Bitcoin becoming the reserve currency of the world. The US government might find it difficult to impose its will in this regard.

What is Jainism or believers trying to achieve through this kind of a sacrifice and deprivation?

According to the Jain scholars, Santhara leads to a form of Ahimsa (non-violence). This might seem like an oddity to followers of the Western religions, but for followers of Buddhism and Jainism, it is a path for completely cleaning your soul.

For outsiders, Jain religion can be full of surprises. A section of the Jains (Digambaras) refuse to wear any clothes, as they feel that being naked will make it easier for them to detach themselves from the outer world.

Yes, many things seem like oddities to Westerners.
Some jains wear a face mask, to avoid inhaling/killing micro organisms.
But still, starving oneself to death must seem to be very strange to those who have not come across Jainism before.
1324  Economy / Speculation / Re: $220-240 range.. on: September 06, 2015, 04:04:38 AM
As I type this message, BTC-USD is now at $242 which is very nice
I bought some BTC when it was down at $218
Time to exchange I guess than loose again

Well, if the price goes to $250, you will still regret selling out at current levels.
Nice appreciation in the past 24 hrs.
1325  Economy / Economics / Re: Government & Bitcoin on: September 05, 2015, 08:44:51 AM
Some Governments are thinking to regulate bitcoin exchanges to stop their use as money laundering purposes. But bitcoin is not a bank or a financial company based in one city. How would regulation apply to something that exists in the cloud?

As of now the main use for digital cryptocurrencies has been for purchasing illegal goods and services from markets in black market. So all governments wants to regulate these transactions but not clear how they will do it.

They just need a track of who has how much wealth. The exchanges act as an information source for them. If you exchange too many bitcoins for fiat, then the government will investigate if you have paid your taxes and all that wealth is accounted for.
1326  Economy / Economics / Re: The Real Story of Gold on: September 05, 2015, 08:12:42 AM
Gold has the faith of governments.

Wait...why?  What's so special about gold, when so many other elements (rarer than gold or not) are just as expendable, but even more applicaple (energy, etc.)

Energy? How do you stockpile energy?  Shocked
Do you stockpile barrels of oil? Gold is a lot easier to store? It is a no-brainer to use gold as a store of wealth, rather than oil.

What is Jainism or believers trying to achieve through this kind of a sacrifice and deprivation?

It is the ultimate state of control and renunciation.
Of course, you can't do it until you have total control. A moment of weakness is all it takes to break your fast.
1328  Economy / Economics / Re: The Real Story of Gold on: September 05, 2015, 02:43:33 AM
I still love gold, because people can touch, wear it, and use it for cosmetics.

So the value has all around appeal for most people. And as long there is a demand for it, I see profit.

Dude, people wear their underwears everyday too. You can touch it and fucking wear it as a cosmetic if you are into that shit, its not about the extra features it has to offer man, if that's how you feel about an asset or a currency. The only reason there is demand for it is because of its historic existence from decades, if you measure gold in comparison of bitcoin regarding percentage increase in potential, you'd know where to really see profit.

Gold has the faith of governments. Right now, bitcoin is restricted to a community on the internet (and some corporations who see it easing e-commerce transactions). That is a big difference.
1329  Economy / Speculation / Re: $220-240 range.. on: September 05, 2015, 02:41:10 AM
A bit narrow.  $225 ± 25 is more like it. The price has been in that range for most of 2015. When it got outside of that range, it came back. There was a bubble during July and early August, but it popped.

The floor was tested in late August too. Thankfully, it rebounded.
If the price had stayed below $200, a lot more people would have lost faith in bitcoins.
1330  Economy / Speculation / Re: When will bitcoin reach 500 USD again ? on: September 05, 2015, 02:39:23 AM
$500 sometime in 2017.
It is more than double the current price. Don't expect it to get there in a hurry (block reward halving or otherwise).
1331  Bitcoin / Press / [2015-09-04] WSJ: UBS Developing Virtual Currency on: September 04, 2015, 03:26:10 PM
UBS Developing Virtual Currency as Financial Institutions Embrace Blockchain

http://blogs.wsj.com/cio/2015/09/04/the-morning-download-ubs-developing-virtual-currency-as-financial-institutions-embrace-blockchain/

UBS, the Swiss bank, is developing a prototype virtual currency based on blockchain, a sign that financial institutions could be on the cusp of a technology-driven wave of change. Unlike bitcoin, the UBS “utility settlement coin” would be linked to real-world currencies and central bank accounts, the Journal’s Anna Irrera reports.

CIO Oliver Bussmann says the coin could be the first building block in the widespread adoption of blockchain-based platforms in mainstream financial markets. The currency, being developed with London-based Clearmatics, could reduce settlement times, which currently take two to three days, to a matter of seconds, UBS and other banks believe.
1332  Economy / Speculation / Re: China Scrambles To Enforce Capital Controls - Bullish for Bitcoin? on: September 04, 2015, 09:08:20 AM
The article says their government has clamped down on the Macau "money laundering channel" now. It goes on to say there must be other money laundering channels", but it also says their government is clamping down heavily on any way to get money out of the country. It doesn't seem like it will be a simple matter to get money out in the future.

The Chinese are known to act with an iron fist in implementing policy.
If Bitcoin gets too big and attracts attention (with respect to evading capital controls), you can be sure that there will be action.
1333  Economy / Speculation / Re: $220-240 range.. on: September 04, 2015, 09:05:12 AM
We did dip into the $200's a couple of weeks back.
There seems to be some stability and them wham - we see a big move.
1334  Economy / Economics / Re: Do you think Bitcoins has a great future in India? on: September 04, 2015, 01:05:30 AM
The literacy rates in India too have been growing tremendously anually. I think that even if the English speaking class displays interest in bitcoin, it could really be a nice opportunity for bitcoin to shine. 10% of India speaks the English language fluently, leaving a market of more than 125 million people. In fact, India’s population is more than the combined population of US, Russia, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Japan, UK, Germany, Australia, Italy, Spain and New Zealand! Wink

Corruption too is high in India. Wink
If a small portion of bribe payments were routed through bitcoins, the price would receive a massive boost.

and the image of Bitcoin would be hurt even more, and probably BTC would be banned in India and other places.

Like Silk Road, Gox and drug dealers aren't enough

luckily though, they havent experienced any of these situations, like most have.
so I hope that those past history lessons just dont resurface and focus on the better parts of bitcoin.

There is no such thing as bad publicity.
The media attention on Silk Road probably got a lot of people's attention and initiated people into Bitcoin (not necessarily to buy drugs).

The debate in India started because one of the High Courts banned the practice of Santhara by Jains.
The Supreme Court has now stepped in to allow it.

1336  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Austrian police fear as many as 50 migrants dead inside lorry on: August 29, 2015, 04:27:12 AM
I am perplexed at the fact that these refugees are heading towards the European Union. Countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar are very near to Syria, and they are much richer than these eastern European nations such as Hungary and Bulgaria. Why risk you lives getting into Europe, when you can travel to Saudi Arabia much more easily?

It also depends on how the Saudis would react to refugees. They might be ready to offer monetary support, but not accept refugees.
Plus people might be desperate to escape from the confines of the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia King Donates Millions To Syrian Refugees But Won’t Take Them In

It should also be mentioned here that Saudi Arabia has not ratified the 1951 Refugee Convention and does not even have an asylum system. U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has a small office in Riyadh but it is not allowed to receive and review refugee claims.
1337  Economy / Economics / Re: Can bitcoin help the world's unbanked? on: August 29, 2015, 04:13:34 AM
Yes. In third world countries that do not have any central banks would skip the introduction of such a bank altogether and use Bitcoin. However, this will probably take some time yet. Not everyone may have the technological understanding needed to use Bitcoin, but hopefully by at least 2020 those third world countries would probably benefit having bitcoin as their currency.

Third world countries which do not have a central bank?
I doubt if such entities exist (except possibly if they have adopted the dollar)
1338  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Suicide on: August 29, 2015, 04:02:13 AM
This is the Jains' view on Santhara.
Makes for interesting reading.

Suicide is a desperate measure, triggered by failure and setbacks in life; it is an act of cowardice, a surrender to the circumstance because of lack of will power. It is a decision forced upon the person by external circumstances. According to the Jains, Santhara is the exact opposite of this.

In one of his discourses, Osho Rajneesh had tried to differentiate between death as a spiritual discipline and suicide. "Mahavira says, 'Go on a fast, and die of hunger.' It takes ninety days for a normal, healthy person to die of hunger. If he is weak in resolve--even a little bit--the desire for food will return the next day... If Mahavira had given the permission to die by taking poison, drowning in a river, jumping off a mountain, it would have been a matter of instant death. But a warrior good for showing only a moment's bravery is of no use in the battlefield, because he will become a coward the next moment...So Mahavira has given permission to commit santhara, causing death to oneself as a spiritual discipline."

Isn't Bitcoin already gaining some traction among the Indian tech crowd?
Definitely a huge market Smiley

Yes, the tech crowd is huge. So if it gains traction among the tech crowd, it will be a great success.
Some of the tech companies have started experimenting with the blockchain.

It's impossible to stop people of offing themselves. What are they going to do, force feed him? And even if they do that. He can stop eating and the cycle begins all over again.

If they are determined, they can commit suicide.
But if it becomes illegal, it might deter a few.
