1361  Bitcoin / Pools / p2pool - Decentralized, Absolutely DoS-Proof, Pool Hopping-Proof Pool [archival] on: January 16, 2012, 02:45:20 AM
I setup p2pool as my backup pool.  I also setup merged mining with namecoin.  Is there anyone work on improving p2pool sharing the aux chain? Effectively solo-mining the aux chain can't be the best we can do.

Is there a block explorer-like site for the p2pool chain? It would be interesting to see how much hash power, the contributions, numbers of peers, etc.  http://forre.st:9332/graphs/ has some stuff, but not much.
1362  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin vending machine on: January 14, 2012, 03:44:45 AM
Internet will be ubiquitous very soon and this is future tech so I don't think the network connection is really a problem.

I'm excited for more real world applications of bitcoins that work like this.

Once armory is lightweight, it's watching wallets will be perfect for this.
1363  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin vending machine on: January 14, 2012, 02:43:34 AM
Now the vending machine needs an IP address and internet connectivity, but cool none the less.

Now that they have a working prototype, they can work on getting the parts cost down.  I'm sure the finished product won't have a tablet on the front that you could rip off.

Breaking into this machine means the vandal can't get any cash which is a great feature.  It also means that the owner doesn't have to send anyone out to empty the coins/bills; they only have to go out to restock the machine.  Since the machines will be connected to the internet, they can notify their owner whenever they are low on a product, too.

Thanks Bravetheheat,

the address was not included in the email
I got two emails.  The one that had the connection information was sent to my spam folder.

Unit testing is a PITA. I commend your work.  Once I get it running, I'll send a donation Smiley
1366  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: COMPLETED: Request for an RPC capable fork of cgminer (155 BTC pledged and paid) on: January 12, 2012, 10:53:49 PM
So I realized it was going to be way too much work to write a full monitoring/notification center for cgminer.

Instead I am just going to write a simple plugin for Zabbix and let it handle all the graphs and what-not.

Also, this works quite well.
Code:
echo "version|" | nc ip.addr.of.miner 4028
1367  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: ANUBIS - a CGMINER Web Frontend on: January 12, 2012, 04:34:07 AM
I'm using IIS in Windows 7 to host the web server.

phpmyadmin works fine, so I assume that I installed php correctly.
No idea about configuring IIS.  PHP might just be enabled for certain directories or something like that.  Your web server is definitely serving the php just like its HTML though.

I don't understand why phpmyadmin pages work then (that's .php) and anubis doesn't.

I just installed myslq/php on one of my rigs. I sort of know what I'm doing, but I'd really appreciate someone telling me how to configure myslq properly for anubis as I have no idea what i'm doing there.

edit: I got the database and username setup in myphp for anubis, but it still doesn't appear to be working. Here's a picture of what I'm getting. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/25848420/anubis.png

Help would be greatly appreciated!

Looks like PHP isn't enabled.  Not sure what kind of system you have. Installing PHP is enough to get it working on most systems.

Great idea.

Code:
sjdntqu5roj4q6lo.onion

Awesome. It works!

Code:
$ bitcoind getinfo
{
    "version" : 50000,
    "balance" : 0,
    "blocks" : 161736,
    "connections" : 3,
    "proxy" : "127.0.0.1:9050",
1371  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [Stratum] Overlay network protocol over Bitcoin on: January 11, 2012, 06:26:13 PM
I used the rpc calls that you provided in your document where it was possible, but some calls are missing for session management.
So does this mean that electrum servers will eventually be part of the stratum network? That's what I was hoping, I just want to make sure.
1372  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Want legit 7970 testing/benchmarking and tuning for cgminer and Diablominer? on: January 11, 2012, 08:54:19 AM
BREAKING NEWS: I now have all the donations needed to grab that 7970, I should be ordering it within the next week give or take.

The last donation was big enough to help me cover that gap, and I think this wonderful person wishes to remain anonymous due to the size of the donation.

Gee, wish I got free stuff.
I'm pretty sure Diablo has put hundreds of hours into his mining code that most people use without giving him anything.  If you consider a person's time free, then yeah... I guess it's free.  If you are at all intelligent though, you would realize Diablo is someone who deserves donations.
1373  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: ANUBIS - a CGMINER Web Frontend on: January 11, 2012, 12:46:27 AM
I'm working on a similar project, and just wanted to make sure people are being secure.  If you open port 4028 for cgminer to the world, then anyone can send and command to cgminer.  This could be bad since someone on the internet could send the "quit" command to your miner.

Make sure you configure your firewalls properly!

Code:
sudo ufw allow from <IP of monitor> to tcp port 4028
1374  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info - Bitcoin Block explorer & Currency Statistics on: January 11, 2012, 12:34:54 AM
Awesome work.

I run a node (169.237.101.192) that is located in California.  For some reason it shows up as being in Cairo at http://blockchain.info/connected-nodes

It might be because this same node runs a tor hidden service, but I'm not sure.

The other node I run that is also accessible via tor hidden service does not show up in the list of active nodes.  Is there an IP that I can add to addnode in my conf that will make sure I connect to blockchain.info and show up on the globe?
1375  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - a new thin client on: January 11, 2012, 12:25:17 AM
I rebooted my server and moved it behind a different firewall.  When I went to restart electrum-server, I got an error from mysql.

Code:
$ electrum-server

I imagine that rebuilding the database will fix this, but thats ages.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I have the torrent of the database that slush put up (I think it was him), so that may be easiest.
1376  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [Stratum] Overlay network protocol over Bitcoin on: January 11, 2012, 12:15:47 AM
Please don't shut down Electrum now, Stratum is still not ready as a replacement for Electrum backend. But I'm hoping it will be ready soon.
I shut it down cuz something broke in the database.  I don't really have the desire to fix it right now. I'll post my errors in the electrum thread.

I'm working on two fronts. I like libbitcoin project a lot and I think it's the future of the Stratum project, because it following all bitcoin rules, does all validations, it's programmed in really good way and don't need to be running with satoshi's Monolith. However at this point libbitcoin is not mature enough. As an example, I have no idea how to really use it, because the lack of documentation. And I'm not hiding that my C++ skills are almost non-existing.
Not needing to run bitcoind would be neat. I can see the arguments for having multiple clients on the bitcoin network, but I feel like it is also a dangerous road to go down.  It can potentially slow down adoption of features and definitely has the potential to introduce bugs. Sticking with satoshi's bitcoind is definitely a good idea for now.

I think libbitcoin will be a good choice once it and stratum are a bit more stable.

Thanks to this I see Abe as a better candidate for the startup. Although it is bounded to original satoshi's client, it's pure python and I can understand it better ATM. And I'm trying to implement Abe in the way that it can be easily replaced by another blockchain backend.

I didn't read the armory code yet, but it's also early alpha and memory usage is outragenous (but I understand it!). I still see the lowest risk in using Abe.
I agree Abe is lowest risk.  I was just thinking that looking at other people's code may give us some inspiration.

I also found https://github.com/samrushing/caesure which hasn't been active in a while, but it is all in python.
1377  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [Stratum] Overlay network protocol over Bitcoin on: January 10, 2012, 11:56:10 PM
I didn't.  It hasn't thrown any errors though, so it looks like I don't need to. Running "python -c "from twisted import words"" works without problem. Hopefully nothing is broken lol

Interesting. This is needed for IRC support, but I see you in #stratum-nodes already. I'll need to check pip, if it also install some recommended dependencies or what. But if it didn't raise any exception during startup, then everything is fine.
Maybe pip grabs everything while easy_install doesn't. I'm not sure though.

I've shut down my electrum server since I am liking this project more.  Are you still planning on using abe for indexing the block chain?  Maybe looking into some of the armory code would give us some ideas.

Quick question, don't mean to interrupt but--

What happens to mining pools if Butterfly labs is legit?

Would I be able to go get my own butterfly box and flap my wings to riches without investing in online rig companies?

Well you could do that.  I imagine that the mining pools will do the same though.  Goat has already talked about getting FPGAs once they are a bit cheaper.

I run my own miner and also own shares of TyGrr Tech.  You don't have to pick one.

I would love to see every person with an FPGA in their house, but until that's possible, I was just thinking that at this point all the mining companies would be using them. Is it still not as viable as GPU rigs?

They (currently) cost more for less hashes.  Whether it is worth it really depends on the cost of electricity.  Those butterfly labs miners do look really sexy
1379  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Torservers - Free Anonymous Uncensored Internet for Everyone on: January 10, 2012, 11:51:26 PM
I think tor is great and have been playing with it for years.

I'm assuming you run a bitcoin client rather than using a web wallet. If that is the case, you should consider setting up a tor hidden service.  Right now I believe the only two hidden services online are run by me.

It's really easy to do. I'm sure you already know how considering the number of nodes you run.  Just in case though, all you have to do is add 2 lines to your torrc.

Code:
HiddenServiceDir /var/lib/tor/hidden_coin/
HiddenServicePort 8333 127.0.0.1:8333

The list is of nodes is at https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Fallback_Nodes#Tor_nodes, but like I said, mine are the only 2 that seem to be online.
