1361  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: BitCoin Adopting Unique Alt-Coin Features on: July 18, 2014, 10:24:01 PM
Alt-coins that aren't using Bitcoin's codebase are the only ones that stand a chance to even remotely stand alongside/compete with Bitcoin."
I certantly wouldn't agree there. For people that are actually willing to write code an inability to just copy and paste is not much of a barrier.

How about, you know, actually offering a distinct value that justifies having a whole other currency (e.g. friecoin)?

Edit: I removed some spam plugging Bytecoin based (e.g. bytecoin, monero, fantom, etc.) coins from this thread which also spammed other threads— but to the extent that there was a genuine misunderstanding, and not just a desire to spam I figure I should comment... the bytecoin ring signature is pretty straight forward to add to Bitcoin— though it implies a pretty considerable scalability tradeoff. Andytoshi and I have come up with some pretty substantial cryptographic improvements, e.g. https://download.wpsoftware.net/bitcoin/wizardry/brs-arbitrary-output-sizes.txt

I pretty much agree with gmax here.

See there are so many people wanting feature x y z....firstly those features are almost always hype as in not really a feature and not delivered anyway.

Eg faster transactions. Anyone who has played any FPS should understand latency times, and how this limits data between different points. "faster" block times in BTC code base just mean more orphans, and pternitally more competing chains. But so many people don't get this.

BTC needs to be just BTC. If improvements are genuine, then the forked coin will survive on that basis.

It is far preferable to have competent dev on BTC, did you see the devs on the last release?

Gmax and friends should not be constantly peppered with I want feature X.

The crytpo landscape at the moment is dividing in BTC/Peercoin/POS/NXT/Ripple/CPU coins.....?Maidsafe/etherium?

if you feel strongly go and dev a coin or pay some one to dev a coin
1362  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why does Bitcoin not implement anon? on: July 18, 2014, 10:11:51 PM
BTC is 100% anon if you use it right and with various utilities.

Dark is a joke, its not even anon. DRK is th enew FTC.

it went, FTC --->QRK---->DOGE---->Blackcoin---->DRK----???this is the dump cycle.

Anoncoin seems to be much better.

1364  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: July 18, 2014, 09:43:36 PM
will etherum be able to do anything that NXT can't do?

I can't speak for NXT (or XCP, MSC etc), and we have good relationships with everyone in the field. Personally I see our future interactions as collaboration, not competition.

I think the vision we have for ethereum is unique, even 6 months after our original announcement. The core idea is to promote the development of dapps by making it very easy for people to leverage skills they already have: JS, HTML or QML for the frontend for example. The contract part also has a low barrier of entry, by using a VM and enabling several higher level languages (Currently GO-like, python-like and lisp-like).

As I was saying in previous post, I remember, being a developer myself, being quite frustrated it wasn't easier to build the cool dapps that have been envisaged in the last 18 months. I think making the build process near-trivial will accelerate innovation in the space quite dramatically.

ok....I thnk nxt was putting a programing language interface as well...could be wrong though

good thing we have escrow
1366  Bitcoin / Project Development / decentralised Id and able to forget on: July 18, 2014, 09:12:11 AM
It would be handy to have a decentralized "Facebook" where you are control of all the information related to you, so you can publish info about your self but then can delete it as well.

This however may not be possible with screen shots etc.....but it sure would be much nicer if you want to eliminate info.

Something like BTC + MAIDSAFE+ SNAPCHAT + ?

in fact it would seem twitter+email/google+facebook are ripe for decentralized versions that hand back control to you.

1367  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANNOUNCING] XAP coin - Open-Source the Internet - API Marketplace on: July 18, 2014, 09:01:58 AM
the concept has pormise, eg API calls have value.

However so far people are giving API's away for free in most cases as they want you to be able to use their software to monitize it down the track some where, eg the ultimate audience is paying it through buy advertised products

essentially info aggregator (face book) want you to come in and use.

financial servers charge eg Bloomberg....but what happens when BTC takes over there anyway?

however

they buying from self, well they are givign you a chance to ride with them, if it all pans out (big if)

what I want to know is what do they do with the XAP not sold in the initial tranch.

They should just split it all with those that send BTC to start with.....
1368  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Moderated Thread - Open Alpha Has Launched[Updates & Discussion] on: July 18, 2014, 08:11:00 AM
I wish at the top of the thread it had a big notice to tell the estimated launch date and any cumulative slip, wading through the IPO info is just to much.
1369  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: World Bank Report: Bitcoin is a ‘Naturally Occurring’ Ponzi on: July 18, 2014, 05:53:31 AM
Banks are going downhill from here.

They have been at it for too long already, it's time to take those greedy fuckers down.

In bitcoin we trust.

actually for BTC it's

with bitcoin we don't need "trust".
1370  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: World Bank Report: Bitcoin is a ‘Naturally Occurring’ Ponzi on: July 18, 2014, 05:42:24 AM

central banks are an un natural PONZI scheme of pyramid debt issuance without competition.

and this banking chap has no idea.

Quote
“One of the most recent cases of bubbles occurred in the new ‘Bitcoin’ experiment. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency; the main and original attraction of which is the low transactions cost associated with its use. One can buy bitcoin the way one can buy euros and trade freely with others having euros. Trouble started when people began speculating that the value of bitcoin would rise, thereby raising the demand for bitcoin and making the value-rise a self-fulfilling prophesy. In other words, what we witnessed recently in the bitcoin phenomenon fits the standard definition of a speculative bubble.”

no that's not the main attraction by far.

the main attraction proposition is the money/value is

  • un seizable,
  • can not be devalued by printing more fiat money.
  • can be sent to the most favorable jurisdiction.
  • no currency controls, want to move 100M, you can do that on Sunday at 2.00 pm, without a bank in about 10 ~ 30 minutes

“So Bitcoin isn’t a currency. It is [by the way] a Ponzi game and a conduit for criminal/illegal activities. And it isn’t safe given hacking of it.”

Bitcoin is currency and far far more. The protocol has not been hacked to date.

and here's a quote from me to the world bank.

"Bitcoin is far more of a World Bank than the "World Bank" is and can ever be or even imagines itself to be. Straight out Bitcoin offers Banking to the whole world and all that without central agency".
1371  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New York’s New Bitcoin Rules Are Going to Kill Its Startups on: July 18, 2014, 04:33:41 AM
NYC loss....when they see how much money they are loosening at 10~100~1000x today, they will likely change their tune.

also I note

"Bitcoin businesses must also file frequent reports to Lawsky’s organization"

typical bureaucracy trying to give itself more power and importance at the expense and cost of the taxpayer.

One thing the US does have going for it is the competing corporations laws inter state, which may allow much larger competition in seeking income.

Much like Delaware has quite good company laws and a purportedly excellent bench, so many companies like to incorporate their.

Further politicians are more than happy it seems to accept BTC funding. This may cause and advantage to BTC accepting politicians and thus force more to accept. They will find away from self interest to make it possible for them to get money/BTC.

Finally is it about time that some BTC candidates run from the community. I have found in elections that if even appear to take any sort vote, all of a sudden the front runner will contact you and they will cut a deal.

1372  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Groceries PLEASE!!! on: July 17, 2014, 01:35:48 AM
im sorry, but arnt YOU the closest person that lives near YOUR grocery store, ..

.. may i suggest YOU talk to YOUR local grocery store to accept bitcoins. as im pretty sure no on else wil travel all th way to YOUR town to talk to YOUR local grocer..

if YOU want a grocery store near YOU to accept bitcoins, then its kind of obvious that YOU need to help YOURSELF to make things in YOUR town change. YOU live there after all..

i am bringing change to my town. so dont sit there and whing on a forum. instead ask for the best way to introduce it, the bst way to get your grocer to accept it. and dont just hope someone else will change your town while you sit on your sofa. get involved, be the change that you want

hey Frank1, Its hard to find a thread without you it....do you 24/7 BTC forum?
1373  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: THE STATE OF DOGECOIN on: July 17, 2014, 01:04:56 AM
when DOGE forks to POS and stops the block reward to a hard cap, or similar a asymtotic cap then it will recover.

The problem is the crowd that understands much wow are orthogonal to those that understand 10K coins per block for ever = % wise less money supply.

Also Mr. J Wise has not helped DOGE's cause as much as he could have.

Yes, it will be able to be regulated by US government. Smiley

+1

how?

1376  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Is Having Its Moment But There Are Better Sustainable Currencies on: July 15, 2014, 09:03:05 AM
"Nothing at stake" is in any case a chimera. It's a hypothetical beast that's never been seen in the real world. The idea makes some sense for currencies with a high block reward, but for a PoS currency that doesn't pay interest, like Nxt, the potential gains from forging on multiple forks are tiny, and not worth the loss of security. Remember that in PoS the forgers with the most to gain from shenanigans are also the ones with the biggest stake to lose if the currency does get broken. Upshot is that no-one forges Nxt on multiple forks today, and they likely never will.

I just do not see the nothing at stake as an issue, its just like merged mining.....
1377  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Dollar-Backed Digital Currency Aims to Fix Bitcoin’s Volatility Dilemma on: July 13, 2014, 11:14:31 PM
Bitcoin’s does not have a Volatility Dilemma

rather most human don't like the uptake curve of btc because it doesn't match their time scale of $10 more each day.

"Volatility" it is actually one of BTC's most powerful bootstrapping features that attracts traders and entrepreneurs, media, and gets it used faster.

the 'volatitliy' myth belongs in the same bin as the LTC on GOX and BTC on AMAZON.
1378  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VRC] | VeriCoin | POS - NSDI | VeriBit | VeriSend | VeriSMS on: July 13, 2014, 09:55:45 PM
Hi all,

just want to show support for the DEVs decision to hardfork the blockchain.

I like it, how finally somebody stands up against all these cryptothefts by protecting the property of community members and investors.

I am all for letting those thieves know, that they cannot screw up the vericoin blockchain. A hardfork will discourage them to try again, because they have nothing to gain. It will in fact protect the integrity of the blockchain, because property rights are respected here.

Bitcoin Foundation and DEVs thought/think they need to protect the integrity of their blockchain by never rolling back transactions even after considerable amounts of BTC were stolen. This only lead to more thefts, scams and fraud - up to the point, when mtgox itself went into bankruptcy under highly suspicious circumstances.
And now $-volume at the exchanges is falling and mainstream is scared away from bitcoin, because of all these thefts.

It is not more than a theory, that you cannot roll back fraudulent transactions, because it will discourage future investors - eventually it will be proven wrong.

That is just my opinion,

Thanx

If vericoin gets dumped, I will buy more.

so what happens if such a centralized dev team gets leaned upon by gov which includes a gag order not to say they are being leaned upon?

it looks like a single point off failure.

1379  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VRC] | VeriCoin | POS - NSDI | VeriBit | VeriSend | VeriSMS on: July 13, 2014, 09:53:25 PM
It's hard to see how VRC is going to come out of this well.

consider. Forks in BTC have been for technical reasons asfaik.

1380  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is unfair to the non tech-savvy on: July 13, 2014, 12:52:31 PM
people are trained by omission in education, by mass media and gov, to not think about what fiat is, only that they need it.

Movies about $$$
Crime about $$$
success measured in $$$$
Price of things in $$$$

tax in $$$$
wages etc etc

you can go no ad infinetum.

As I have said several times, you could talk to people and anyone in this forum now back in 2005 about FIAT currency and their eyes just glaze over.

I know I did it. I made a whole presentation on FIAT/FRB/CRR for my Law of banking elective, i tried to explain to people  the issues and scam of FIAT and how their needed to be competition.

Eyes glaze over.

Now BTC has put it squerly on the table and FIAT is unmasked....but only for the minority.

The intersection of what "money" is plus the tech, is major ovelaod for a lot of people.

There needs to be a lot more uptake which will take years from now. essentially you are saying, hey you know you money, well your money is no good! Wait what? yeah that paper stuff or digits in your account/shares valued in $$$$. The $$$ bit is all basically near worthless soon.

A killer app / hardware has to come along that is easy to use.

We are accordingly still in quite the early stage of BTC @tm
