141  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin-qt reindexing again? on: July 06, 2015, 03:12:45 PM
Besides making sure that bitcoin core is completely closed the next time I close it, IS THERE ANYWAY THAT I CAN MAKE A BACKUP OF THE BLOCKCHAIN ONCE IT'S FULLY REINDEXED SO THAT I CAN USE THAT BACKUP IN CASE I AM HAVING TO REINDEX AGAIN ?
Use e.g. 7-Zip in "Synchronize files" mode to archive the "chainstate" directory, because this is the one that's get corrupted most often. When in doubt read the "debug.log".

Thanks, I am doing that right now. So, if next time I open bitcoin core it gives me the reindex problem again, can I just unzip this chainstate directory and replace the one in appdata/bitcoin with this backup and then no need to reindex again?

Right now bitcoin core, after having reindexed for almost three whole days, it is now updating download of recent blockchain blocks, but it seems stuck at "9 hours"...
142  Bitcoin / Armory / Can I have bitcoin core open and star armory too or only armory can be open? on: July 06, 2015, 03:09:38 PM
Yes, I know armory sort of runs bitcoin core in the background or something. The thing is, I have bitcoin core open right now. It's taken me almost 3 whole days to reindex the blocks (second time now!) and after it did then it continued updating the blockchain download, but it seems stuck at the last 9 hours...
But I am afraid to close bitcoin core in case I get the reindex problem again, so wondering if there is any problem if I launch armory while having bitcoin core open too?

I tried a search in this forum but could not find anything with "armory with bitcoin core open", sorry if this question has been asked a trillion times  Cry
143  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How can I take my bitcoins onto a new hard drive? on: July 06, 2015, 03:03:42 PM
AFAIK, you only need the wallet.dat file, just copy it to your new HD and you can continue like nothing happened

This is the best answer and aside from that, you can copy the private keys manually then export it in your new wallet

And if you are going to continue using Bitcoin Core, then it's better to copy default directory so that you don't want to download blocks from the start.

You can find wallet.dat in default data directory. See https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Data_directory.

One thing, so if I manage to download the whole blockchain with bitcoin core as I am in fact doing, if later I take that wallet.dat file from bitcoin core, could I use this file in another lighweight client (electrum) to check my coins?

No, especially electrum allows you to restore its addresses via a mnemonic called seed. You could import the private keys and addresses from your old bitcoin core wallet into electrum, but it would defeat the purpose of the seed. The imported keys are not covered by the backup via seed. If you use a different wallet the most safe to do so is to transfer all coins from your old wallet into the new one. If you cant get bitcoin core to work for some reason for this, ask someone you trust to do it for you or import the private keys into a temp wallet.

What if I have several wallets in bitcoin core, will there be one wallet.dat per wallet to copy or just the one ? thanks

A wallet is not the same as an address, by default bitcoin core only manages a single wallet file the wallet.dat. You can rename the file to e.g. wallet1.dat and bitcoin core would create a new wallet with a new file and new addresses for you, but there is no way to manager several wallets within a single wallet file in bitcoin core. You would have to close bitcoin core and rename the files every time.

Thanks, got mixed up. Bitcoin  core only manages one single wallet file at a time, noted. (It's with armory where I have more than one).

145  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin-qt reindexing again? on: July 05, 2015, 02:32:58 PM
I updated my bitcoin-qt and the newer version, Bitcoin Core, reindexed the blocks.  It shuts down every day and now today it says it has to reindex all the blocks again.

Yesterday I sent ~.1 btc to Coinbase.

Is this maintaining a blockchain getting abusive?  Some kind of scam to force the use of an online wallet that will incur charges?

Same thing happening here !
bitcoin core seems to never get past the "last 9 days" when downloading blockchain (takes me about 4 days on my win7 laptop !)
After that, when  I close bitcoin core and re-start it has to reindix the blocks (second time it's happened in a row, and it takes me about 48 hours to do so !)

I read a rumor somewhere that BLOOMBERG might start including bitcoin in their charts in cooperation with blockchain, to be announced tomorrow...

148  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: BTC withdrawals are not working on Bitstamp on: February 20, 2014, 05:21:04 PM
I repeat:

To hold too much fiat or too many bitcoins at any exchange is retarded. There is nothing to back you up.
The proposed strategy was and is to buy quickly, maybe during a, say, seven day window for some cost averaging, and withdraw all bitcoins as you buy them.

But of course, if you want to let greed (having money and bitcoins there for long so as to TRADE) guide your decisions...
149  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Massive 41,700 BTC transaction just happened on: February 11, 2014, 05:24:03 PM
I am not impressed. Perhaps exchanges move large amts of bitcoins all the time between their own wallets to create transaction volume, who knows.
150  Local / Mercado y Economía / Re: Bajón y caída del BTC $102 !!! Qué ha pasado ? on: February 10, 2014, 12:35:16 PM

151  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - Discussion Thread on: February 09, 2014, 09:02:40 AM
I'm running avast as well and I do not have that issue.  I even manually scanned appdata/armory to check.

Thanks both replies.

Yes, I am scanning just the appdata/armory folder with avast too.
What's exactly inside those sst files ? Is it text ?
152  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - Discussion Thread on: February 08, 2014, 11:34:22 AM
Hi, used Search in this Armory forum but got no results.

In windows7 an antivirus program detected the following TROJAN:

AppData\Roaming\Armory\databases\levelb_blkdata\035288.sst   marking it as: VBS:Bicolo-IU(Trj)

Has this issue been addressed already ? Is it somthing normal or something abnormal to worry about?

Please let us know, thanks.

Uninstalled Armory, deleted the Armory files, including databases. Reinstalled, synchronized OK. I Ran the antivirus program (Avast) again and AGAIN I got a TROJAN warning as the above, mwith a different SST file this time. The Antivirus program deleted that one too but then Armory crashed with an error warning when trying to Sync again.

Can anyone give me some feedback as to if there are any precedents to this sort of thing ? Should I worry ? Is there anyplace else where this sort of issue has been addressed ?

THANKS

So many maybes, yes.

so much fear, greed, wishful thinking, dreams and nightmares, yes.

prepare for the worst, that is, losing all money invested in bitcoin, but hope for the best and hang on.

This is not a poem, no.

155  Local / Mercado y Economía / Re: Precio bitcoin 2014 on: February 02, 2014, 08:20:06 PM
Mis previsiones:

$0
o
10.000
o
$ 818 (precio actual aproximado de ahora)
o
$ 1200
o

156  Local / Primeros pasos y ayuda / Re: me presento on: February 02, 2014, 07:53:48 PM

159  Economy / Economics / Re: Current situation with slovenian banks...? on: January 20, 2014, 06:27:02 PM
I think he's not worried about how fast he can take out his bitcoins from bitstamp, but of the USD he has parked there waiting to buy bitcoins when there's a sufficient enough good drop in price.

Personally I am inclined to buy soon, even if putting orders in several price ranges, but in anycase within a short time, say 7 days, to get the bitcooins and get them out fast just in case.

Greed is good, greed is bad.

There's a a disadvantage either way.

If you park your USD there indefinitely until bitcoin makes a big drop, say to $500, your greed is bad as puts you at risk of something happening to bitstamp or their bankers and losing your USD.

If you buy quickly as I mentioned above, reduce risk of losing your USD but of course maybe you are buying much higher than "you could have bought"....if there is another big drop which isn't sure either.

Since I prefer to deal in higher probabilities and lower risk, my opinion is to do what I describe instead of having a pile of USD sitting around somebodyu else's bank when there is no regulation that can compensate me in case of government robbery or the exchange's bankruptcy.
160  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Some advices for Bitcoin-QT on: January 20, 2014, 06:15:59 PM
if you are going through the trouble of using Bitcoin-qt, that is, having to download the whole blockchain, then why not make a little extra effort and also install ARMORY which I believe gives you even more protection, as you can create all your wallets completely off-line ?
