I think that's a cool idea Lucky. I'd send 10k SLR to help fund that. Perhaps more!  Grin

Anybody make any progress with a flyer?  If so, maybe I can use it (somehow) in the giveaway site?

I have been slacking.  Im not that good at it but i do want to try to make one hopefully very soon.

Yeah, me too…have to find some time next week to dive into the web site and the flyer creation Smiley

The last few weeks have proved that the price is only reflecting an idea in its infancy. If people valued the new idea and demand picked up more, the price would go up and miners would come back. Yet that hasn't happened. It will be the same with the PoS structure. Until we see action on the idea (i.e. an increase in generators claiming coins), I don't think we'll see much of an uptick in price in the short term, even when the wallet algorithm changes.

Even I fell victim to the expectations trap!  Shocked

It's an interesting chicken & egg scenario. Cheesy I think we all had expectations of a price increase solely as a result of making changes to the algorithm even though the only goal of changing the algorithm was to reduce risk on the network to support the price as it naturally goes up. Soon we will have a safer algorithm in place to support growing the network (and eventually price) but it still comes back to the mission of getting coins into generators hands, that IS the point of SolarCoin. And, as we are all aware, that sort of thing doesn't happen overnight, especially when almost everyone involved thinks the only people qualified to grow the network are those involved with the "Foundation". We can all choose to play a larger role, we don't need their permission to do it. The foundation is already there and it isn't about individuals, it's about all of us as a network. As soon as we clue into that, the better off we'll be.  Roll Eyes

Right now most people are classical "investors". Throw some money at something and expect others to do all the work to make it happen and then when nothing happens, rage against the machine. The thing about cryptocurrency that we need recognize and accept is the fact that we are all cogs in that machine and if it's gonna move we can't just sit back and expect everyone else to do all the work.

And now we are back to the same place we were before, the price is not reflecting the value of the idea. The idea needs to be acted upon more robustly and show signs of becoming a reality first before price will follow. Securing the network via PoS is just one of the first steps the community felt was important to make, i.e. secure the network before coin distribution starts to pick up. The PoS algorithm should keep the technology of the blockchain current for long enough that focus can be paid again to the Mission, thus the current holding pattern. I expect once that hurdle is cleared in the next week or so, advancement towards acting on the mission will continue, hopefully by more of us than just Nick and Joe.

That's my humble opinion.  Kiss

It's a good opinion.  Wink

Personally, I think we also need to tap into the potential investor/promoter/supporter that exists for the good of the cause; not necessarily a solar producer (which will be the backbone of the coin); people who might like to get involved or promote the cryptocurrency, even though they may not be able to produce the energy.  IMHO, there is a large number of potential wallets in this space.

I'm coming back to my idea of the coin giveaway site. I'm going to throw out some ideas, and maybe others can lend their thoughts.

The basic premise, is to build a site that allows/provides a vehicle for those who want to get involved and distribute the message. It would be the collection or distribution site, where people could come to claim coins. The site could:

- manage personal donation wallets that contain coins for potential claims
- provide the ability for site Users to control a personal donation wallet, where coins could be deposited for potential giveaways
- the ability for Users to check their personal wallet balances, and see any claim details
- provide the User a sequence of auto-generated unique codes that allow potential Users to visit the site and claim coins
- provide a User interface within the site, where the person giving away the coins can define how many potential giveaways (codes) they want to generate, and how many coins per giveaway they would like to distribute (satoshis level, if desired)…not all of the flyers that may contain the codes would be claimed. Note: the donator could have more than 1 giveaway; i.e. some may be special, where the number of coins given away may be larger for one lot of codes.
- a deadline for the giveaway (a timeframe when the offer expires)
- provide the ability to auto build flyers, that contain basic information about the coin (web site/mission/cause/how to get a wallet/etc.), maybe some cool graphics, an auto generated code per flyer, the url to come and claim the coins/code. *** This feature is a biggie. It's also be nice to auto-produce a large pdf doc, with multiple flyers/pages, with a unique code on each one.  Maybe a multiple PDF options (?), so that people could email one or more to their friends or if any PV vendor or other solar manufacturer that may have an email list where the site could autosend an email flyer for promotion?
- accept the User input of 2 fields to claim the coins : code from flyer and coin wallet id

Again, I am over-worked and tired, and my mind is not too clear…but I am throwing thoughts out there.  I think if everyone started their own promotional campaign, it could be a huge take-off for solarcoin. Even 10k of solarcoins in a fund like this, where you could send a flyer out with 5 slr for each code, and 2000 flyers, would potentially bring in a few dozen/hundred new Users/wallets?

Let me know if anyone thinks something like this makes sense….or not.  lol

I'm thinking to buy more CCN too before their wallet release, has anyone else considered this? I expect our wallets will be out a little after theirs as we do testing ourselves. That way I can see what this PoS wallet business feels like as their code will be the same as ours.

It's odd though, I could have sworn last week CCN was trading around 2500 sats but the chart on Bittrex is only showing a low of 4900. Has anyone else noticed this?

I was thinking of buying some too. There has been a doubling (or more) of the price in the last few days?  It looks like many small buys on Bittrex; maybe there are bots (or humans) manipulating the price there too?

Well it's not really price manipulation right now.

We are in a meltdown trend thanks to all the scams of Altcoins.

Mintpal bankruptcy after the wonderful Mt Gox scandal...  Poloniex exchange DDoS attacks and also several instances of lost coins.  Bittrex selling scam ICO/ITO offerings...  Bots...  Pump n dump groups...  The list keeps going on and on and on...

Dan Metcalf - highly respected cryptocurrency programmer was accused of some pretty hefty things and after reading through all the info, it could quite possibly be legitimate.

Either way after all these downward spiral events, we are at the turning point where people are no longer trusting altcoins due to the greedy few that have truly screwed the system...

There is a long road ahead for Bitcoin, but an even longer road ahead for altcoins.  You can see the crash happening, looking at every altcoin.  Volume is gone, price is gone, and the downward trend will continue...  For how long, who knows.

The few good coins that are legitimate and have a good community, like solarcoin, will survive the storm, but the scar in the system will remain...

The future of altcoins is a giant black cloud right now....  I will continue holding, as I believe SLR will carry on, but in the near future, it's going to be a roller coaster of a ride...
Interesting take... Thanks for that

Mazz, it's the truth of the current stage of altcoins.  I read a post somewhere a while back about the "altcoin meltdown".  I was a skeptic, now I am a believer...  It's happening right now.  Too many negative events, new users losing money...  The trust factor has been lost.  Pump n dump groups soon won't have anything to pump which in the long term will be good for altcoins.  Maybe once the pump groups are gone, we can actually see real growth in the real projects, but until then, it's a dark time.

There's no meltdown…more like a shakedown.  Fear mongers are everywhere.

There's always problems with exchanges - people who leave their coins on/in exchanges are nuts!  Most of these exchanges are average Joe's, so why would you trust them?  In-and-out should be everyone's philosophy when using an exchange - get your coins back in your personal wallets / cold storage; at least until a regulated/trusted body gets involved.

There are some dumb/junk coins. It's time some of them went away.

Do your DD when choosing coins, specifically when it comes to the people behind them. This is what attracted me to solarcoin. Solid purpose/goal. Transparency. A charter. A team. A move to incorporation, non-profit. Nick. Educated professionals/volunteers backing/moving the cause.

I don't think programmers should drive the progress of a coin. Solarcoin has a Foundation, that needs to make the decisions. The technology development (blockchain) is the vehicle, but the developers do not drive it….that's just wrong, and too risky. I would be very weary of putting my money in a place that operates like that.

The cream will rise to the top in this space - and there are some great coins that are moving forward.  The strong will always survive.  I wouldn't sell anything right now.  I'm holding strong…and buying where the weak are giving.

Dear SolarCoin community,

I have been a dedicated volunteer for SolarCoin for about 7 months, and it has been an amazing learning experience. I have always believed SolarCoin is one of the cryptocurrencies with the most potential to change the world for the better, so it made sense to get involved and work hard for this project. I am grateful to Nick and Joe for the opportunity to be part of their team during the early stages of SolarCoin's development.

As I'm sure you all know, volunteering is something we can only do when we have enough free time available. Everyone's time is limited and everyone's time is valuable, and we must all make difficult decisions about how to use it.

Recently I decided to leave the SolarCoin team so that I can become one of the principals in a startup. Any successful startup requires a very high level of time commitment and dedication by its founding team, and my new position demands all the time and energy I've got.

I had hoped to announce this after we completed the transition to Proof of Stake, but unfortunately there have been some unexpected complications and delays on the development side. Other SolarCoin team members will be keeping you posted on these issues going forward.

Although I'll no longer be working for SolarCoin after the next week or so, I will continue to follow this project with interest as an investor. I am pleased to see other investors in this forum sharing ideas, and perhaps some of you will volunteer as I did. I wish you all the best with SolarCoin and hope it will rise to its potential.

Sincerely,
Eric (freebird)

All the best Eric!  Good luck with the new endeavor. Maybe when things settle you can return and advance the cause some more  Wink
153  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][SLR] SolarCoin | PoW to PoS v. 2.0 | Solar Proof of Generation (§1 = 1MWh) on: October 29, 2014, 10:34:17 PM
We can all start as simple as puting a flyer about solarcoins in any persons mailbox if they have solar panels on there roof. start with your neighborhood.

Good idea. Do we have such a flyer?  I seem to recall reading about someone writing about such a flyer, but cannot recall if one was completed?

If not, what would such a flyer contain?

- logo
- url for more info: solarcoin.org
- short description of initiative
- short description of how to claim
- enticing snippets -> perhaps future value/potential -> be part of the initiative
- ?

This could also be used as an insert to any promotional giveaway of soalrcoins too.

I was talking about the flyer, i really like the idea of a wallet on each flyer but I fear that may be impractical. The costs to make each flyer unique would be huge i'd imagine. You could print out individual wallets and put them in each fler I guess but that would be quite time consuming.

Each flyer could just have an e-mail address and a unique ID random phrase.  person emails with phrase and address gets coin. could also start a dialog.  or even post a request in BTC forum.

Maybe I can develop a web site to do this?  Would there be a general need for something like this - an automated giveaway of cryptocurrencies?  Maybe cryptogiveaway.com ?, where coin owners/promoters can deposit into a locally maintained wallet, and then define the terms of the giveaway.

To validate (terms), there could be a few different options. One such may be instead of responding to a publicized email address, maybe I could have the site accept the random phrase in one field and the User's wallet address in another? If the random phrase was one of the valid phrases (initially loaded ?), the site could automate sending coins to that wallet? The amount of coins to giveaway could be chosen (pre determined/set), or random. There could also be multiple types of giveaway, with a different amount of coins being given away, for different set of phrases; as the promotions and rewards could vary.

I'm half asleep right now, from working many hours over the last handful of days, so if anyone has something to add, or better thoughts, let me know.  I should be able to code something up fairly easily.  Smiley

It might be a nice way to get cryptocurrencies "out there", for all someone would then need to do is print and distribute flyers with the random phrases, and load the random phrases into the site, deposit into a local wallet, and define the terms of the give-away.

Thoughts?

Mining will continue until the new wallet gets released. We don't know yet at which block the proof of stake hard fork will take place.

Oh - I managed to misunderstand the original statement; "Starting on Block 310,000 the PoW block reward will go from §100 per block down to §1 per block over a 33-day period at which time the 100% PoS algorithm will be implemented".  We are a day away from SLR 1 per block - or even 0 per block if the '--3' continues - since we went to 99 and then --3 from there.  It will be instructive to see how many miners keep burning electricity mining a 2000S coin at 1 per minute.

I will keep my little gridseed farm online to protect the blockchain, but it seems like a chasm of uncertainty looming tomorrow.

Good point! I hadn't realized the OP wasn't written quite right. I'll go fix that. Smiley

As to the "chasm of uncertainty", I'm not uncertain at all. The price has to go up. Roll Eyes If it doesn't, mining dries up, volume dries up, price will get stagnant, yada yada. Is that what we all want? The price isn't going to go up by itself.  Grin Now IS the time to buy since the over supply from the miners, who kept dumping on strong bids are, for all intents and purposes, gone. This is true whether we stay at PoW for a few more weeks or go to PoS right now. Would it have been awesome to have PoS kick in right now? Yeah. But there's a delay. That's why we have the fallback in place at 1/block. The whole point of this exercise was to address the over supply issue somehow so that we could get the price to a more palatable level so that generators would start claiming their coins. To me that should be at least $0.10 if I'm going to convince anyone to claim coins. The demand has always been strong, now it seems to be "paused". The mission is still on track, the CCN team is continuing to work on figuring out how to properly address the issue they've bumped into. In the meantime, we're mining at 1/block instead of earning 1% interest. Big deal! LOL

I say carry on, add to your positions, push that price up to a level where is is profitable again, miners will come back, coins will be secure. It's all good.

But like I said, it isn't going to do it by itself. In one of my previous posts, I tried to show how even $0.04 cents would make it profitable to mine again. That's only four times the current value, it's certainly not out of reach or an outlandish goal. We can get there now without having to worry about a miner coming in and shoving it back down to a fraction of a penny. Ain't gonna happen anymore, that risk has been algo'd out of the equation. We're free to proceed now if we choose to.

That's my 2 photons.  Kiss

Epiphany,

Thanks for doing a great job in keeping the information flowing.  We will let everyone know ASAP when the new codebase is ready for the move to Proof of Stake. In the meantime, mining will be at the rate of 1/min, which is  roughly 1,440/day.  I am working on a white paper explaining a theory of monetary value via economic utility which puts forth a thesis for why SolarCoin or any token given a finite number can represent economic value if enough participants engage in its use.  Hope to have the paper out in 3-4 weeks time.  The general thesis involves the economic utility of a currency and the network effects of having more participants using it.  Basically, more users equates more places/people to spend/trade currency and goods with which increases economic utility.

Bitcoin with a $5b market cap and lets say 5m users (using the term lightly) means each users creates/supports $1,000 in economic utility.    With say 34m SolarCoins in place a $20 utility would require X users. (X is estimated and varies non-linearly) as a function of the network scaling factor.  If it is metcalf's N^2 then 250k users would each produce roughly $330 each and 25k users would produce $33 in value each. at $33/user * 25k users=$8.25million/SLR 34million=$0.24/coin. (huge caveats on the multiplier network utility effect).  the other factor aftecting price is speculative value which is the buy in the hopes of prices going up crowd.  The foundation is interested in cultivating long term economic activity of users first and foremost.

lots of "looseness" in the model, but you get the idea.  25k users isn't a lot relative to a solar community and associates that is probably in excess of 500k employed http://www.irena.org/Publications/rejobs-annual-review-2014.pdf  and well over 2m globally aware or engaged as consumers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_power_by_country

Nick

Hello Nick  Smiley

I like the math/ratios.

IMHO, it's clear there needs to be a Foundation sector/chapter dedicated to coin promotion.  Smiley There are so many potential avenues to explore. I'm going to throw out some random thoughts:

Does it make sense to try and promote the idea of solarcoin, in various retail spaces?  An obvious application is within the PV hardware and service spaces, but what about other green manufacturing?  Light bulbs? Exterior solar lights? Grass seed? Shovels @ Home Depot or Canadian Tire?  Other solar/pv products; i.e.  smaller kits for specific applications?  Calculators?  Recycled products? Compost materials? etc, etc.? Plants?

What if, and I'm just throwing it out there, we hooked up with major "green" manufacturers and asked them to insert a solarcoin paper with each product?  It could be isolated to solar products, or possibly other green products?  That solarcoin paper insert could be a paper wallet, with a fraction of a solarcoin. Additionally, it could come with instructions on how to use the cryptocurrency, get a wallet, and get involved (be a part of) and support the solarcoin initiative.  It might be the quickest way to get that User base where it needs to be  Wink

Thoughts?
156  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][SLR] SolarCoin | PoW to PoS v. 2.0 | Solar Proof of Generation on: October 26, 2014, 11:23:36 PM
Cryptopoolmining seems down? I can't access the site... so I switched my NiceHash contract to Mining Pool Hub. I figured I'd point this out and see if anybody knows what's going on with it. I did tweet them but haven't gotten a response.

Yes Nice/West Hash have been down for a while now.  I have gone back to solo mining for the last 3 days of SLR mining.  With difficulties down in the 10's that is practical; and I do not expect any great hash numbers appearing with the reward at 6 SLR.

It gave me an opportunity to get the new wallet (1.5) sorted out on my little solar powered rig, so that it can then stay open 24/7 - even when I shut down the gridseeds, because they don't earn their lunch in practical terms anymore.

I can recycle the heatsinks and fans....  Sad

Mining will continue until the new wallet gets released. We don't know yet at which block the proof of stake hard fork will take place.

The price of SLR is definitely on an upward trend, which should help bring in more hashing power.  Keep up the good work guys.

Also, considering the size of your generator pool, it might be a good idea to scale your payments in the beginning.  In other words, maybe paying out 1 coin per KW/h of generation for the first 3 months, then .5 coins per kw/h, and down over time.  This would give incentive to early adopters.  The current 1 SLR per MW/h isn't much.

Just a thought/suggestion from reading through the specs.

I think that's too many.  I think the current reward/model is valid. The incentive will not be there if more solarcoins are rewarded, for if the coin has no value, it doesn't matter how many coins are paid out.

IMHO, the Foundation needs to put some time/energy towards building a plan to bring value to the coin, as that still appears to be missing from the recently stated goals (in this forum). How is the Foundation's $20-$30 target value going to be realized?

Hi all,

Thanks Corather and Mazzaneo for mentions. Wink

A short update on my project called the #solarcoinalphaproject. I promised that the first version would be out by late October so I thought I had better inform about the schedules. I am running behind schedule.
The goal of the project is more of a running proof of concept to show that an encrypted signal can be sent from a stand-alone PV system's API to any required receivers to accurately and securely prove the number of solarcoin's being generated by the system during daylight hours of operation.

0) Design completed. Electrical design and then some tests of the gateway and its communication to the software teams API. Completed. I had some initial road blocks here.
1) Components procured and delivered. So far it also includes a global pyranometer enabling the system to have a prediction mechanism inbuilt based on historical weather data for the location.
2) Weather proofing tested for battery box.
3) Power system DC Wiring half completed.
4) Meeting with software team completed. Understand tasks.

Remaining:
5) Communication box wiring
6) Dry test and link to API.
7) Stability and running for 1-2 weeks.
Cool Writing the white paper (in parallel) to explain the prediction technology, the link to the API and possible further work ( I hope others can pick up from where I stop) i.e. secure blockchain calls and receives because my area of expertise is solar yield prediction technology, solar PV systems and PV monitoring systems, not networking security.

Please note, the system is only a proof of concept intended to show what could be done theoretically. It would not interfere with anything.

Thank you,
-lfloorwalker

Wow - great stuff! I did not know things were that close.  Great work!  Smiley

What are the next steps?

Do the solarcoin devs now get involved to write the interface to the blockchain, using the API.

Thank you!

Is there going to be a new wallet available to download when we shift to PoS? If so, when will it be available?

Yes, users will need to download a new wallet to begin staking. We're hoping to receive the new code and wallets from the CCN devs soon. Unfortunately we don't know exactly when they'll be finished.

Dev team of coin is important.
Solar need official programmer..

Research the threads; there are tech leads dedicated to the coin; they leveraged the Cannacoin dev team for latest blockchain advancements/upgrades, as they were already implementing similar changes with that coin. The Cannacoin dev team is one of the top dev teams in the crypto industry.

Just 'pos' :p

And even the version is not from nova.. Black..

We're using BlackCoin code and that's one of the best PoS systems out there. We chose it carefully because of its superior features.

Even where is the main notification board??

Bitcointalk?? Twitter ?? facebook ?? Solarcoin.org ??

Well, I've been posting updates here on Bitcointalk and also on Twitter, on a regular basis to keep the community informed. There are also updates posted on the website. Facebook too, I suppose, though I haven't been active over there lately and I think others on the team are the ones who post there.

Your support is admirable. Keep spreading the word…it's a difficult journey, but every word of support helps :-)

Someday we'll/you'll look back and say I feel good about fighting the good fight :-)
