I need to think about converting back to a non smart phone. Once you have experienced smartphones it is hard to go back though especially because most phone manufactures only do smart phones today. What phone would you recommend that has a good camera and does not rely on Google, Apple or Microsoft?

I haven't found one yet with a decent camera. I use the Punkt as it offers me connectivity via WiFi or BT to my other devices like notebook but it has no cam. So far I use small dedicated cam with USB only (no WiFi) like the Sony DSC-W810B or the Canon Ixus 185.
Unfortunately convenience and OpSec are always indirectly proportional.

Not a problem if you drive a 1992 Volvo 940.

My words, but at some time these vintage cars (including my 2001 Opel Caravan) will be EOL and I fear the day I have to buy one of these rolling fondleslabs.

Wrt to 'intelligent', self-driving cars, today a autonomous BMW iX caused an accident with 1 dead, 9 heavily injured in Germany. Though it is not clear yet if the vehicle was driving autonomous or was controlled by a human.

I vaguely remember some regulars here talking about using Ring cams, thought you might find this 'interesting':

Amazon has revealed that it gives police videos from its Ring doorbells without a warrant and without user consent.

    Ring recently revealed how often the answer to that question has been yes. The Amazon company responded to an inquiry from US Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.), confirming that there have been 11 cases in 2022 where Ring complied with police “emergency” requests.

-> https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2022/07/amazon-finally-admits-giving-cops-ring-doorbell-data-without-user-consent/
-> https://www.markey.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/amazon_response_to_senator_markey-july_13_2022.pdf

Also, if you (like me) refuse to wear a tracking device (vulgo: 'Smartphone'), make sure you understand to what extent your car is snooping on you and tracking your every move:

TheMarkup has an extensive analysis of connected vehicle data and the companies that are collecting it.

    The Markup has identified 37 companies that are part of the rapidly growing connected vehicle data industry that seeks to monetize such data in an environment with few regulations governing its sale or use.

    While many of these companies stress they are using aggregated or anonymized data, the unique nature of location and movement data increases the potential for violations of user privacy.

Full disclosure upfront: I'm too daft to know how to multi-quote (quoting and responding to different posts in one reply). So I'm trying to address every post relevant to this discussion in one go (hopefully in chronological order), in order to avoid multi-posting.

Simply open every post you want to quote from in a separate tab or window with the quote button. Finally hit "reply" for an empty textbox and start copying from the tabs/windows what you want to quote. Make sure you get the start quote tag copied so that people can click to read the post you are replying too. Also make sure the quote is properly closed with the /quote tag, see example below:

Code:
[quote author=psycodad link=topic=178336.msg60716403#msg60716403 date=1659981557]
What you quote from my original post you are refering to.
[/quote]

What you say.

[quote author=Tuco Benedicto Pacifico link=topic=178336.msg60720657#msg60720657 date=1660047345]
What I quote from you
[/quote]

What I reply.

You can also make the quote refer to a web page, which looks admittedly messy, but very nice and useful for the readers of your post:

How to make a quote with an url-address
Code:
[quote="[url=http://www.simplemachines.org/]SMF[/url]"]What is SMF?[/quote]

Use the preview to check the results and fix any problems.

Hope this helps you or somebody else on quoting.

@psychodad
They are the No. 1 contributor to the EU, and therefore member states, financially.
So if calling the shots means splashing out money to everybody else, you might be right. Other than that...
And the EURO as their trojan horse to transfer wealth into their direction is obviously a genius move, since the Deutschmark had failed so miserably before.
There`s a study out, I think by OECD, comparing median household wealth in the EU. You might want to look it up. From what I remember, German households are among the poorest (as opposed to government finances, which are still relatively godd, althought deteriorating fast).
With things looking like they are right now, you might have a reason to rejoice in the near future. Germany is hanging itself, while simultaneously shooting itself with a shotgun, thanks to its brilliant energy policy - along with several other self-destruction mechanisms..

No more shot-calling, Fritzes`dictatorship ends..yeah.
A bright future for all of the EU, or in fact Europe, lies ahead..

btw: No personal attack intended on you, either. Trying to be realistic, though.

No offense taken, you certainly are right that Germany is the biggest contributor to finances, though that is what I meant a bit with my trojan horse remark. A good example was Greece with the subs they bought from Germany, Germany borrowed them money to buy German submarines. When these famous useless bridges or streets somewhere in Romania, Hungary or wherevers are built with German money so to say, it is more than often a German contractor doing the job.

But I'll give that relative poverty is widespread in Germany, many just work from payday to payday, a lot is relying on social services ('Hartz IV'). Though there are differences. For example in all parts where Germany borders to Switzerland most of them work in Switzerland, they drive up to 100km one way for work. These guys earn maybe a 6-8k salary in CHF, swap it to EUR and get even more at current exchange rates, while at the same time they would get 3-5k EUR in Germany for the same job. But in general I still agree with you, wouldn't want to be a construction worker in Berlin or such.

Also it seems to me they have installed (or disposed in the case of von der Leyen  Grin)) a lot of functionaries into the EU apparatus to make sure their interests come to the table. Still as long as Martin Sonneborn is there, there is some hope  Grin

Don't get me wrong, I live very close from Germany (and France) and I have many friends in Germany. I don't want to see Germany to break down because a) those friends, and b) it will take us all down too. But I personally fear that by spring latest, they will be fucked and in a real crisis with riots due to cost of living and lacking support from government (it seems the green party is rather supporting the industry than the poor most affected by gas/energy prices).

And the EUR might as well implode. While the current exchange rates are good for export, they are very bad for import, so the industry is happy, the consumer not so much.
When the Euro was introduced in 92 it was worth 1.80 CHF, right now it is worth 0.97 CHF and I foresee it to go down further, I guess EUR/USD is similarly developing.

I guess we have to prepare for the worst in Europe, still hope for the best and just enjoy the ride.

<snip>

The EU concept was Germany's plan B if the war was lost, to continue their dominance over Europe.
Sadly the occupied Europe of WW2 has long forgotten why they are not all now speaking German.

<snip>

While I am all in for some recreational Germans bashing, this is not true. They went all in and lost, there was no plan B.

The original and primary goal of the Montan Union (predecessor of the European Community which is the predecessor of European Union) was to keep the Fritzes under close watch of their neighbours after the war (especially France wanted to have a close look) by common control over the (war-)important resources like steel, coal etc.
The idea came from France, Germany agreed immediately as it allowed them to regain some sovereignity. And most of the world agreed that helping them rebuild is a smarter thing than keeping them down for ages (like after WWI, which was what brought Hitler and the NSDAP to power finally).

It is however IMO true, that today they're calling the shots in the EU and the EURO could be seen as their trojan horse to transfer wealth into their direction.

Watched Attraction 2: Invasion this weekend (I know we're not supposed to consume products from the evil empire, but nonetheless watched it and it is actually not that bad..).
There was that funny moment when the teacher/professor demonstrates his robot puppy named "Vitalik". The teacher then turns to a student (Maxim) and says: "It could be named Maxim if YOU had invented Bitcoin".

Not sure what the take-away from that scene is, but this and the heatwave here left me greatly confused.
The best explanation I came up with so far was that I misunderstood it and the teacher actually said "It could be named Maxim if YOU had invented [a] shitcoin".

And of course I restrict user's home directories as much as possible (usually 700 or occasionally 750).

Do you ever see any application broke when you use 700? Usually i'd use 750.

In most standard situation it makes no difference as it's the users own group owning his home directory. It starts to become interesting when your primary group has more than one member or you chown the group ownership of your home directory to some group with more than yourself as member. In the vast majority of standard setups both settings have an identical effect.

One thing to note is that omitting all access from world/other (the third byte) breaks certain things, like ssh key-auth or mail forwarding. So I've seen 751 or 711 as recommended alternative to 750/700 [1][2].

Earlier this month, I and others wrote a letter to Congress, basically saying that cryptocurrencies are an complete and total disaster, and urging them to regulate the space.
..

I am a big fan of Bruce, have read all his books (well, actually not true for "Applied Cryptography" which in parts is much above my comprehension, but I tried it too) and so far all his writings have been a great inspiration and education to me, but I do not agree with most of the points he makes here. For example, he doesn't seem to get the difference (or that there is a difference at all) between POS and POW and quite a few other misconceptions AFAICS.

Anyway an interesting read to know what the crypto guys (<- cryptographers, batslap not applicable!) think about BTC, the discussion below the article is the most interesting part IMHO.

Yesterday's surprise was that Lennart Poettering quietly had left Red Hat following a decade and a half there leading PulseAudio among other projects and ultimately going on to start systemd that has fundamentally reshaped modern Linux distributions. It turns out he had joined Microsoft and continuing his work on systemd.

Funny how this once was a conspiracy theory that systemd was invented by Microsoft to kill Linux when that pile of crap surfaced first.

...

Only 209 kids between 6 months and 4 years old have died from Covid—about 0.02% of all virus deaths in the U.S. About half as many toddlers were hospitalized with Covid between October 2020 and September 2021 as were hospitalized with the flu during the previous winter. More children were hospitalized during the Omicron wave last winter, but hospitalization rates were still roughly in line with the 2019-20 flu season. None of the 5,400 or so toddlers in Moderna’s trial were hospitalized for Covid. Yet at least 15 were hospitalized for non-Covid infections.

...

At least Moderna’s trial showed modest efficacy against symptomatic Omicron infection—37% among 2- to 5-year-olds and 51% for those 6 months to 2 years old. Pfizer claimed its vaccine was 80% effective, but this is misleading. For one, Pfizer contravened numerous clinical-trial conventions. Its initial protocol involved only two doses, but this failed to generate the antibody levels required for FDA approval. So Pfizer added a third dose, which the FDA generously allowed. Usually the agency won’t let drugmakers make a course correction when a trial ends in failure.

...

More troubling, vaccinated toddlers in Pfizer’s trial were more likely to get severely ill with Covid than those who received a placebo. Pfizer claimed most severe cases weren’t “clinically significant,” whatever that means, but this was all the more reason that the FDA should have required a longer follow-up before authorizing the vaccine.

153  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [ANN] KRAKEN.COM - Exchange with USD EUR GBP JPY CAD BTC LTC XRP NMC XDG STR ETH on: July 03, 2022, 08:49:30 AM
Why is kraken.com so very slow nowadays? Every click that has something to do with security takes about 30 to 60 seconds. Examples:
  • Entering 2FA
  • Clicking Deposit
  • Generate new address
  • Copy address
  • Withdraw
During this time, there's a process "Isolate Web Content" that takes 100% CPU. I don't know what it's doing with all this CPU time, but it makes the website almost impossible to use. A simple order that should take no more than a minute to complete now takes about 15 minutes.
I know my laptop isn't the latest model, but most sites work just fine.

I can only speak for myself but I use Kraken on a daily base since ~2016 and I see only improvements in speed and reliability (which in all honesty doesn't say too much given the timeouts and downs we were used to years ago and when you were lucky to submit an order actually within an hour or two).

For example the 2FA screen comes really instantly after submitting user/pw. Also the site loads within 1-2s after 2FA. I too use (very) outdated hardware (basically what other people kick into the trash) but I haven't experienced any notable slowdowns recently.
I generated a new DOGE address yesterday and that wasn't a problem too (3-4s IIRC).
I checked just now and everything seems to be working smoothly for me. Though deposit and withdraw (tried BTC and DOGE) take 3-4s to fully load but I understand you experience a completely different ballpark of waiting times.

BTW: I use Linux, Firefox ESR and have around 10ms network latency to kraken.com.

I have seen quite a few reports of Firefox's site isolation feature to go nuts: https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/discussions/quot-firefoxcp-isolated-web-content-quot-is-slowly-consuming-all/td-p/1872

Given this, it might be worth a try to disable site isolation to see if things improve then (though I am always more than hesitant to advice anyone to disable some security feature, so only try that if you are fully aware of the risks):

To enable Site Isolation on Firefox Beta or Release:

    Navigate to about:config.
    Set `fission.autostart` pref to `true`.
    Restart Firefox.

^ Just checked and my FF ESR has fission.autostart on false by default.

HTH and good luck debugging it.

I think that Jay and I can probably more or less agree that you have overconfidence in your predictive abilities.  (To put the matter “diplomatically”.)

And I think that all of us can more or less agree that you are the mindrust for this season.

I beg to differ, losing the stash due to margin gambling is a whole new level of mindrusting compared to selling the bottom and exiting the market without loss (IIRC mindrust even made a small gain or at least no loss). Maybe the term mindrust2ing would be appropriate for leveraged gambling?

Though in my opinion, they both deserve great credit for speaking so candidly about it and letting people learn from their mistakes, many of us probably fucked up badly at one point or another and (at least w/r to me it's the case) stayed silent so to not look dumb. We don't know how many diamond hands mindrusts story created, but I bet there are quite a few pairs of them. At least mine got definitely harder from it. And that's good me thinks.

In these dire times it is nice to hear some good news from time to time:

Seth Green bought back his NFT Ape for around $297,000 in cryptocurrency after it was stolen in a phishing scam.

After all, additional ~$300k to get back a token on a wannabee blockchain where the hash of the URL of that specific picture is stored seems like a great discount for idiots with too much money on their hands.

Trials show it keeps patients from getting sicker, but the agency won’t approve its emergency use.

What’s rotten is that applications for new uses of generic drugs are reviewed under different standards than those for novel treatments. That’s what the FDA did this month when it rejected a Covid emergency-use authorization (EUA) application by doctors for the antidepressant fluvoxamine.

The agency also said there are plenty of alternative treatments available. Never mind that the Biden administration has been warning it may need to ration antiviral and monoclonal treatments unless Congress coughs up billions to purchase more. A 10-day course of fluvoxamine costs about $5 compared with $500 to $700 for Paxlovid and molnupiravir. Monoclonals cost about $2,000.

At the same time the german Handelsblatt reports that Paxlovid is doing more harm than good and it's meanwhile suspected to allow the virus to develop resistance:

https://www.handelsblatt.com/unternehmen/industrie/corona-medikament-pfizer-und-die-covid-tablette-paxlovid-die-furcht-vor-resistenzen-waechst/28379956.html

(^sorry only german)

A Swiss doc who strongly advocated the use of Fluvoxamine was arrested in 2020 by a police SWAT team and sent to the nuthouse for a week on the basis of being a threat to family and politicians. He was never charged with anything. Just if you wonder why not more doctors speak up, maybe they just don't want to spend time in padded cells...

At a glance I do not see much about the following here... my apologies if it has been already discussed.

This is a shot of central bankers and finance ministers from 40+ countries that Nayib Bukele invited to El Salvador for a conference on using Bitcoin as a nation.

The list of countries reads like a whos who of the folks that would be targeted by the IMF et al with their loans etc.  These folks are looking to get off the plantation and they are doing so en masse.

<removed list of countries>

They did this quietly, and it has not been covered much by mainstream western news.

Probably nothing, right?

TBH, I'm getting tired of hearing about these third world countries claiming they're getting into Bitcoin, but then not really doing anything. And by 'anything', I mean more than just talking about it or making it a legal currency. I want to see them buy bitcoin as a reserve asset by the tens of billions! Piss or get off the pot! Drain every exchange dry! I mean ffs, if idiots like Do Kwon can buy $1 Billion worth of btc to back his stupid shitcoin, then surely these Central Banks can buy several billion dollars worth EACH, if not more.

It's what we all want to see and hear, but so far they're just jawboning. I don't even feel like El Salvador has bought enough bitcoin in reserve to impress me yet.

I have hunch that many if not most of them just try to publicly flirt a bit with BTC thinking that it might scare the IMF and hoping it would improve their negotiation position with the IMF.
Still positive news methinks, thanks for bringing that up cAPSLOCK!
And yeah, Torque has a point there, once they start disposing their USD/EUR/JPY/CHF etc. for BTC we will see jumps in prices that even now are unthinkable.
