You are given data to memorize, the state hands you a test, you regurgitate the data, and then forget it all a week later. You're expected to go to college if you want to make anything above minimum wage, then 4+ years and a mountain of debt later most people are entering into shitty jobs they shouldn't have needed a degree for in the first place.
Sounds like something a person without a college degree would say i'm actually in my 3rd year of college right now, doing pretty well. it doesn't take a genius to see that our education system as a whole runs counter to most of the principles we claim to instill in kids. Yay! What are you learnin'? comp sci, interactive simulation physics engines, collision detection, graphics and whatnot hoping to go indie eventually, but who knows

It's just to way to streamline citizens into a cycle of debt and dependency. Back in high school all my teachers would say was "we're here to help you pass government tests and get into college", and that's pretty much all they did. Debt is like quicksand, and the sooner you get the kids into it the better.

IIRC, Obama went on the record saying he would veto the bill if it landed on his desk.
I'm not overly concerned yet that it may pass, but I am - for the umpteenth time - disappointed by Congress.
link? Obama has historically been a proponent of government-regulated internetz

I don't think our borders really need much more protection. What we need is a much smaller military.
The US government has kinda painted itself into a corner on that one. While large militaries are expensive, large numbers of unemployed soldiers have historically been much more expensive - typically to the health of the State that produced them. Good point. If the military somehow disbanded and all those soldiers had to come home to find work elsewhere, we'd really be in trouble. Unemployment's already a huge issue. This was a very common problem in Rome. Soldiers would come home after a war and there wouldn't be enough work (especially since an influx of slaves usually occurred after a conquest). Violent crime and theft would rise drastically.

VENTURE CAPITALISM You have two cows. You sell three of them to your publicly listed company, using letters of credit opened by your brother-in-law at the bank, then execute a debt/equity swap with an associated general offer so that you get all four cows back, with a tax exemption for five cows. The milk rights of the six cows are transferred via an intermediary to a Cayman Island Company secretly owned by the majority shareholder who sells the rights to all seven cows back to your listed company. The annual report says the company owns eight cows, with an option on one more. You sell one cow to buy a new president of the United States , leaving you with nine cows. No balance sheet provided with the release. The public then buys your bull.

I hope you're right, but the tension in the region does seem to be ratcheting up.
I am more concerned about the situation between China and Japan (that hasn't been mentioned much in Western headlines) as talk of war between them (over the disputed territory) is now a constant topic in Beijing. ya i've been wondering why western media sources seem to refuse to cover this
