141  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Amagi Metals - Best Prices of Gold & Silver for Bitcoins on: August 04, 2013, 08:27:28 PM
just got my maple leafs today. you guys are my favorite metals dealer so far (fast shipping, tracking number, pay with BTC Smiley

i do have a question though. i understand buying a monster box (value over $10,000) requires an 8300 form to be filled because its legal tender. does this also apply to the generic rounds when the purchase is above $10,000 when paying with BTC?

At this time Form 8300 only applies if you purchase $10,000 worth of gold and silver in cash/money order or if you purchase legal tender coins with BTC. If you are purchasing bars/rounds, then we do not need you to fill out form 8300. Of course government regulations could change at any time in the future. Please let us know if you have any other questions!

But a monster box is only $500  Grin

Nothing that readers on this forum don't know, but how about for Americans that want some assets that is not under US control?

144  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It's all about "why" do I need Bitcoins on: July 21, 2013, 09:50:16 PM

Being able to move across state lines with nothing but a code in your head.  Its difficult to cross into a new country with 100 oz of gold, but easy with 1000 btc.

Those that are facing a 50% tax on estate taxes on their death. Wouldnt it be nice to give your children btc instead of stocks, cash, or land?  evasion if not reported, but not the dead guy's problem.
145  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Bitcoin will never reach mainstream on: July 19, 2013, 12:18:44 PM
People aren't going to like what I'm going to say but it needs to be said regardless.
The only way bitcoin or any other alternative currencies will become mainstream is if enough infrastructure is built around it.

Person A sending bitcoins to person B (irreversibly) is simply not going to cut it. There is no inherent trust between both parties. We need 3rd party business (banks, insurers, lenders, exchanges etc) to build trust.

I doubt it.  I bought a $1,600 domain using namecheap and sent them irreversible funds by Bitcoin.  OH NOES was I worried, did I use a trusted bank as a third party?  Nope.  namecheap has a solid reputable business and they stand to lose a lot ripping me off.  I had not a second of doubt/fear sending them the BTC.

Imagine your local power company, amazon.com, newegg, namecheap, (insert company you already trust here) asked you to pay with Bitcoins would you have a problem?  I don't think most people would.

Now for fly by the night never heard of the "company" (which isn't even a real company) until they got out of noob jail and starting asking for tens of thousands of bitcoins in "pre-orders" well yeah you probably want to escrow that, then again if they asked for cash you probably would want to escrow it just the same.

I pay for gas the old-fashioned way, with cash. I walk into the store, "$60 on pump #3", give her $60 and leave without a receipt. Every time I think how easy would it be for the teller to just pocket the money and say she has no idea what I'm talking about when I come back and ask why pump #3 isn't on. Haven't been scammed yet.
146  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Amagi Metals - Best Prices of Gold & Silver for Bitcoins on: July 17, 2013, 03:34:01 AM
Hello all,
I am here to warn anybody that is, like me, new to Amagi and considering purchasing gold bullion from them.

I ordered 5 of their Five-gram PAMP Suisse Bars on June 27th and have yet to receive anything. Mind you, these were not marked as "Delayed" or back-ordered when I purchased them online. I did not hear anything for quite a while, until I emailed support on July 3rd and they responded on July 8th. I was informed that the holiday had delayed their order processing, so I played the waiting game some more. Then, on July 11th, I finally receive an email from support saying that my order is now "Shipping". Most people would have a different definition of shipping, as it is now 5 days later and it has not even been to the sorting facility, according to the USPS tracking link.

This is my first time ordering bullion ever, so I do not know if this is typical. I sincerely hope that I didn't order from Amagi right when they are starting to turn into a Coinabul. Is this how it normally goes? What is going on over there?

Sadly, this is typical. While I don't have exact details on how each business works, it is too risky & costly to have a warehouse of silver and gold on-site.

I suggest you should seek out some large coin shows. Hand over a wad of cash and walk out with a hunk of metal. Usually no ID, receipts, or any other paperwork involved.

very nice, tried this with the announcement I saw in the press section. I may use it as a throw away service if it forwarded emails to another address.

Rally seemed to have started with sunrise in Tokyo. Could mean MtGox started withdrawals, or it could mean they didn't.

Awesome. Issued and redeemed many DYM over the last few months!
151  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Sick of surveillance on: June 22, 2013, 07:48:01 PM

I'm not a developer, but this reminded me: I have been looking for something I call "nuisance encryption", similar to hashcash. I give you an encoded message and the key to decrypt it. Your computer must do some work to come up with the final message. If you could get enough people to use it, it would become in-feasible to decode *everything*.

benefit for sender: you can push an encrypted message to anyone, don't have to have a public key - "You must download this app to read this message" or send them to a java page.

152  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: snapswap USD ripple gateway on: June 21, 2013, 03:04:02 PM
there's a http too much in your Signature dividendrippler Link

is there a Cheatsheet for that Ripple IOU Stuff, it's too complicated

haha. Never noticed that, thank you. Off topic: I had a private key in my signature (with bitcoins on it) for months and no one took them, when coins got to $200 each I decided to redeem myself. It was base64, so it wasn't obvious. Wanted to prove that no one looks at the signatures, guess I'm guilty of not checking my own sig.

Cheatsheet - its not complicated once the idea is understood. Start out trusting only Bitstamp for USD and BTC, and go from there.
153  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / snapswap USD ripple gateway on: June 21, 2013, 02:42:21 PM
After verifying my bank account at snapswap.us, I was able to get $100 into ripple. I then bought dividendrippler btc ious, which I then redeemed in my client. Pretty cool - business got done with 2 independent gateways.

I have not tried to redeem USD ious to my bank account with snapswap yet.

154  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: So...Gox has stopped USD withdrawals for 2 weeks, to upgrade???? on: June 20, 2013, 02:48:13 PM
I'm pretty sure you all know what the term "2 weeks" means in Bitcoin-ese.  Smiley

(In case you don't follow ASIC drama, it means "several months up to 1 year")

I'd see to it to get my money out of there. Just saying.

You'll be able to withdraw via coinlab

DR.com is not working now.

It is back up. Sorry for the downtime!

The large increase in difficulty from late sunday night could have an effect. Less coins for new miners to sell.

159  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] DividendRippler.com Anonymous BTC/LTC/TRC Ripple Gateway on: June 15, 2013, 07:07:45 PM
I'm missing something. Trusted the address, registered the account, sent the 1 XRP.... Then what? Everything looks fine, but how would I trade? Using the Trade option in ripple.com doesn't show up on the page, sending ripples to my account ?dt= just gets automatically refunded... So what's the next step?

DividendRippler doesn't hold XRP. The trading isn't done on DividendRippler's site, it is done on the ripple network. You need to bring up the BTC/XRP market in ripple, making sure the issuer of BTC is DividendRippler.

This may be related to the upgrade to 2.24
