.....I don't need to prove anything. They are the ones (and I will exaggerate slightly to make the dramatic point of where socialism can lead to with eugenics, a la Hitler, fall of Rome, Stalin, China, etc) who want to tax the fuck out of breathing (we exhale C02), due to some non-proof.

The Carbon Cycle is life on earth. These lunatics want to tax and destroy life.

I wouldn't complain once we have anonymous cryptocurrencies if bounties are offered for their heads. They should be more careful about how this socialism is going to go down. They feel too safe. They are a cancer and a threat to the survival of the human species. Note I am not making any personal threat, nor am I inciting or advising any one to. Just trying to wake them up to the reality that their lunatic actions have a cost, and they better be more careful about banning the truth and running roughshod over the human species. Nature attacks back.
Not only that but the weak solar flux in the last 15 years or so, and the lack of sunspots, has solar scientists publishing warnings that we may have a 'little ice age coming'.  The point to the one in the 17th century, as the only other time we know of which is similar.

That's huge, even if admittedly a possibility, since the Earth's population is so much higher today.

So does this make me a believer in climate change?

What if there was an effect from the man's co2 and it stopped the ice age?

That somehow also falls within the definition of "Denier".

Go figure.

14142  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Reddit’s science forum banned climate deniers. on: December 19, 2013, 03:08:25 AM
Just to clarify, do you guys think that humans have no effect on our global climate?

that would be a ridiculous thing to think.
So every single thing that has lived as had some effect, however infinitesimal.  Have to formulate a better position for a debate than that.  Otherwise you won't have any DENIERS!

lol...

They could be put to work studying the dietary habits of polar bears close up.  I think to really understand the dietary habits, it would be about right to get 6-36" inches away from them immediately before they start feeding.

No need, it turns out the polar bear population is at record levels Grin Grin Grin
ROFL....

Time to use our human wisdom, reduce the population to ecologically sound levels.

Where dat bbq sauce?

rofl and how long do you think their grants would continue if they didn't claim that the sky was falling? they would all be out on their asses out of work in about 5 minutes if they came to the opposite conclusion of what that diagram shows.

I've got an idea, lets create a group of people who's job it is to figure out solutions to help preserve the population of the arctic fox and then lets ask them for an unbiased opinion on whether or not steps ought to be taken to help to preserve the population of arcitic foxes.

no wait i have a better one, lets ask an asprin manufacturer whether he feels that the the supposed health risks surrounding aspirin use are or are not founded.

"Yea well sorry boss it turns out that there is absolutely no risk associated with climate change, now can i please have an increase in funding for my climate research"

 Roll Eyes
Climate researchers could be put to useful purposes.

They could be put to studying the effect on the environment of trash in national parks.  This would involve picking up all the trash.

They could be put to work studying the dietary habits of polar bears close up.  I think to really understand the dietary habits, it would be about right to get 6-36" inches away from them immediately before they start feeding.

Now for the fat dumb and lazy climate researchers who want to sit in front of their computers and not go out in the big vast Gaia, there is the vast polluted Internet, which is globally warming up.  It's actually getting positively hot.  And this has brought massive virtual pollution in the form of spam.
That is a big job, clearing the spam off the internet.  But if you just connect the dots for these guys .... CO2::SPAM .... they'll get it....

Plus, climate researchers should be cheap and easy to hire.  No gas allowance, no airflight to conferences, no health care for children (they shouldn't HAVE children of course), one light bulb for every dozen or so of them in their hot, sweaty unairconditioned cubicles...

You have entered tinfoil hat mode.  Doctors keep records and as such every country in the world has access to the medical records of its population.  Find something serious to worry about.  Surely obamacare can't be such a success that this is all you can find to criticise?
Every country has access?  Really?

Feel free to point me to a country where the security services can't get a warrant for medical records.
No goal post shifting please.  We are talking here about total data collection on all citizens.

With no warrants whatsoever.

Neither you or Anonymint has an arguable point.  He would argue that the Religious Warmer's co2/lag argument is "this time it's different", which is not impossible but a recognized logical problem.

No I argued the irrefutable point that they have presented no falsifiable science, because they are just picking models out of their ass assuming some variables matter but not others, finding one of many possible statistical correlations, and declaring that to be cause & effect.

That is not science.
Maybe one day you will learn what science is.
Perhaps you might even learn what aliasing error and long-tail distributions are.
It is not my burden to prove them wrong, it is their burden to prove something using real science.

Agreed.  But your "temperature lags co2 rise" argument is not terribly better is it?

And if it is an argument, then it is an argument against what, if there is no falsifiable science presented?

There is no climate change due to global warming period. The earth receives its energy from the sun and its a real scientific fact that the sun is shrinking-no tankers come to top it off.
You know when I put bad gas in my truck and ain't got the carb adjusted right, it has this problem, it detonates.

That sun do that too?

Heck, I can do it in three words: God did it.

Obviously. He's also responsible for global warming:

http://www.defectiveyeti.com/archives/001867.html

WTF, I'm a greedy scientist! Where is my invite!!  Cry

I guess you haven't been lying as much as the rest of us  Grin

key word: Funding. Money does not need people to meet secretly. Right now if you want to have a chance to have your research funded, does not matter what, make sure to add the words "climate", "green energy", "human impact on nature", etc.

Follow the money. We are all humans. We love money. Even tree hugging scientists like Al Gore.

As a world-renowned expert in failing to get research grants, let me give you a pro tip: Never say what everyone else is saying. The best way to get funding is by claiming you can break the consensus, not by reinforcing it. Going against common wisdom adds sex-appeal to your grant application.

Oh and Al Gore is a politician, not a scientist. Also an egomaniac  Cheesy

Al Gore is a scientist: he has an Oscar that proves it. And don't forget:  Grin Grin

There have been calls to make climate change denial a crime too, some people even suggested that climate change skeptics should be executed.

http://www.americanthinker.com/2012/12/professor_calls_for_death_penalty_for_climate_change_deniers.html

Not surprised this behavior stems from a man in the bubble of academia.  I'd like to think, in a normal world, this man's reputation would be completely tarnished and nobody would want to interact with him anymore, but I know this isn't true.
I guess the way that would work would be that the accused would be presented with some kind of a oath or creed, and if he swore by it, he would be pardoned provisionally, likely deferred adjudication.  However if there had been evidence of the accused doing bad things, then yeah, he'd have to go before a jury.

Now that jury, they'd all have to be checked out to insure that none of them were overt or closet deniers - as well as the judge, court reporters, and the bailiff.  You just can't be too careful these days.  The exact meaning of "Denier" would have to be codified and reduced to the proper belief set, and this agreed upon by the relevant committees.

I think when we were done setting all this up, it would be quite interesting.  You know, a lot of those SWAT teams are worried they won't have any work as more and more states legalize marihuana.  I can see where they could swoop in, when an informer ratted on a Denier.  There could be a cell phone app for Denier Reporting.  The NSA would be glad to help out.  Something to help them get a good public image.  Doing good work, you know.  Or maybe not.  Maybe we couldn't trust the people in the US - it'd be better to bring in international cops, observers and enforcers.

I have to admit to being a bit worried about this plan.  Not because some innocent people could die, after all it's all for the planet.  But what if we missed some of the Deniers?  You know, sort of like the Racists that don't even know they are racists, and don't say or do anything racist, but actually are racist?

Hey saving the Planet's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it.

Sun is the Main Driver of Climate Change and Global Warming or Cooling say Friends of Science – Not You or 400 ppm CO2

Carbon dioxide (CO2) levels reported to have reached 400 ppm at Mauna Loa Observatory sent climate change activists like James Hansen, Al Gore, 350.org and Scientific American into a frenzy but Friends of Science say solar and ocean cycles are the main drivers of climate change, not CO2. With no global warming in 16 years despite a rise in CO2, the role of declining water vapor in upper atmosphere partially negates the ‘heat-trapping’ effect of CO2.

Well, it's rather interesting that at least in verbal or post driven argumentation, AGW believers typically don't fare too well.  Doesn't mean they are wrong - some subjects don't do well in debate as over simplifications lend credence to one side or another.  "If the glove don't fit you gotta acquit", etc...

I guess what I am curious about is for those here who sincerely believe in the general theory of man warming the planet, what do they think about Reddit banning so called 'deniers?' and why?

If you click back on my main link, just browse all the way down for the comments. Looks like they loved that move.
But Grist always has selectively deleted posts to drive away people who didn't like their attitude and worldview.  Grist, as I recall, the editor there is the guy that invented the phrase "Denier" as applied to climate skeptics.  Bunch of nutjobs.

Example from their postings...no, it isn't the Onion.

The only genocide here, active as well as passive, is that caused by the increased floods, fires, droughts, crop failures, storms, social chaos and other effects of global climate catastrophe. Those few rich people causing the vast majority of it are guilty of crimes against humanity and the Earth, and all you denying delayalists are guilty of conspiracy and aiding and abetting felons. In some places the felony murder charge is applicable. That's 150,000 to 300,000 counts a year; a lot of prison time for you folks. I'd like to help you avoid that but you have to cooperate. Stop spreading delayalist lies, go through the Truth and Reconciliation Committee process when you get the chance and help solve the problem, starting now.

Solar, wind, efficiency, reforestation, local organic low-meat permaculture are the answers. Pick one or more and learn about it so you help.

...snip...

Of course that's my (American) perception of the state as bad, evil corrupt...while the European/progressive view is the state is good, merciful and just.

The state is only 'good' to the extent that the people keep it that way.

"Every nation gets the government it deserves." - Joseph de Maistre

Without wanting to offend, Americans spend a lot of time killing one another compared to other nations.  Your government is bound to reflect that fact.

I am glad to learn that was NEVER the case in Europe...

It still is that way where I am from (Ireland).  And we have laws on hate speech, on possession of explosives, on firearms and on membership of terrorist organisations that reflect that.  As I said, no offense was intended.

Law is often a reaction to perceived social needs or threats.

But what would it mean to start gathering and maintaining a universal medical database on a population?  That the entire population might be a threat?

No question, a possible reaction to terrorism is that a state becomes more totalitarian.  Just having some trouble figuring out the relation of medical to any perceived actual useful utility.

My inclination is to simply attribute this to the workings of perverse authoritarian liberal controller personality disordered people, given jobs where they can do their wildest fantasies without prosecution or fear.

The UK government wont even release the official government figures for nuclear subsidies due to the fear of a public backlash. To clean up Sellafield, just one toxic waste dump, will cost the taxpayer over £60 billion. Corporate socialism at its finest.
Technology has advanced so much that the nuclear waste disposal is not much of a concern as it was earlier. And considering the  massive environmental damage caused by the thermal power plants, I have no plans to withdraw my support for nuclear energy.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2311217/Nuclear-power-station-leaking-radioactive-waste-months-says-Environment-Agency.html
"A nuclear power station in Kent has been leaking radioactive waste, which can increase the risk of developing cancer, for months according to the Environment Agency".

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/firm-guilty-of-14year-radioactive-leak-1548532.html
"A nuclear power station operator was today found guilty of allowing radioactive waste to seep from a decontamination unit for 14 years, the Environment Agency said.
Waste leaked into the ground from a sump at Bradwell nuclear power station near Maldon, Essex, between 1990 and 2004".

http://www.theguardian.com/business/2009/may/17/safety-scares-at-sellafield
"New safety scares at Britain's largest atomic site – including a 14-month radioactive leak and the loss of two toxic containers."

http://www.theguardian.com/society/2005/may/09/environment.nuclearindustry
"A leak of highly radioactive nuclear fuel dissolved in concentrated nitric acid, enough to half fill an Olympic-size swimming pool, has forced the closure of Sellafield's Thorp reprocessing plant.
The highly dangerous mixture, containing about 20 tonnes of uranium and plutonium fuel, has leaked through a fractured pipe into a huge stainless steel chamber which is so radioactive that it is impossible to enter".

I think what Bryant was trying to say is that with something like coal power, we really do know the number of increased fatalities due to the mining, and the additional bad stuff that goes into the air, and it is orders of magnitude higher than that from atomic power.

Apologies for the faulty link posted earlier. The correct link is http://www.skepticalscience.com/skakun-co2-temp-lag.html.
First of all, you point to a True Believer's efforts to 'explain a technical article' to lay people.  You do not point to Skakun's article or his conclusions.  I am just commenting on this as wrong, and unnecessary, and clearly biased.  You've pointed to an article that asserts "Co2 is the principal control knob governing the Earth's temperature" - not Skakun, dude.

Neither you or Anonymint has an arguable point.  He would argue that the Religious Warmer's co2/lag argument is "this time it's different", which is not impossible but a recognized logical problem.  You'd argue that "no it's been different before, too".  Neither of you has a sound basis for predictive capability based on presented or available arguments and knowledge of historical CO2 and temperature lag or lead.

Now go prove it with tree rings.  Or whale bones.  Or tree lines at altitude.  Oxygen isotope.  Sediment.  Venus.

Yada Yada Yada...

Please grow up.
Nope.  What my personal beliefs are are not relevant to scientific investigation.  I'll still advocate for clear, testable hypotheses.

If the result of beliefs and opinions and politics interfered with that, I'd be opposed regardless of whether it was pro or against my personal opinions.

No video found there.

But I'll challenge Nathan Allen, the 'self proclaimed PhD chemist who is the moderator', to come to this thread and debate his beliefs either with you or I.  Don't think he'd do very well.

I mean, what is he going to say?  The planet just isn't cooperating with his Great Schemes of Warming.  Darn.  Dam that planet.  Ban it!
14158  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US health care mandate (Obamacare) on: December 18, 2013, 02:27:18 PM

There are a number of related reasons why people don't care.

1. Having your doctor store your history is not a breach of privacy.  Your doctor is obliged to send a copy to a new doctor if you leave his practice - that saves a lot of hassle.

2. Under EU law, every organisation that has info on you has to share that info if you send the equivalent of $5 to them and they do get prosecuted if they mishandle data. For example, I was able to have my credit record fixed when Experian made a mistake.  This system works well.

3. In the UK, the public supports massive CCTV and the main victims have been the police and politicians.  Cops that used be able to get away with beating up prisoners, with assaults on the public or flat out lying are now being videoed in action and are being prosecuted.  The public loves this.  They also love the way politicians are forced to go on the record almost all the time.  The old days of "memoirs" that really were just whitewashes of history are gone.

4. In most of Europe, over 100 years of bombings by terrorists has left people relaxed about telephone surveillance and the like.  We do have nutters who do want to plant bombs.  These nutters, for example the IRA, precede al qaida by 100 years and will still be active in 100 years time.  That that affects our attitude to privacy.

So we are not that worried about state oversight.  We worry far more about private companies that might break the law and use data in ways that we don't want.  Americans could care less about their private data and they mistrust the state.  Its a significant cultural difference.

Got it, yeah it's a big difference.  Our (my) general interpretation of what you wrote is "yep, successful brainwashing.  Big Brother tells you to be in fear of enemies within and outside, and he will relentlessly pursue them(you)..."

LOL...

But most of what you wrote was about general surveillance and data collection - you've noted at least in Germany that the medical records are not collected by the state.  And that was the focus of my question.

I view the medical data collection by the state as far more dangerous and invasive than say, collecting data on cars passing camera points, or people walking down a certain street.  The medical database can be used by political forces against opposing parties or persons, and would be so used.  At least here it would be.

Of course that's my (American) perception of the state as bad, evil corrupt...while the European/progressive view is the state is good, merciful and just.

The state is only 'good' to the extent that the people keep it that way.

I decided a long time ago to act in forum the way I talk in everyday's life. I would get abused but never abuse back or censor, and keep it cool.

I realized true believers never need a hammer to nail their ideas to others, never use force. Obvious is obvious. Complicated solutions or explanations last the length of some scientist's grant or their natural life then get forgotten by history.

Yeah.  But what happens with theories, or pseudo theories or whatever AGW is, is that if false, they get burdened with more and more rationalizations and explanations until eventually they simply collapse of their own weight.

Politically the problem seems that there's big money in ascribing to airborne CO2 the attribute of evil, and thus instilling guilt in people from producing evil gaseous outputs, and then assessing punitive fines and taxes for this 'justifiable and urgent' crisis.

Basically it's an attempt of governments to assert ownership of the air envelope of the entire world.
