1441  Other / Meta / Re: Forum advertising space for free signature/avatar advertisement on: September 28, 2022, 06:34:36 PM
Thanks for the notice Pmalek, and great work creating the Bitcoincleanup project NotATether.
Due to sentimental reasons, I would prefer not to change my personal text at this time, and I cannot wear an avatar yet, leaving only my signature to be used. I have updated my sig space and would be waiting on proper sig design matching my rank.

Great work all round

1442  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: HeadsTails | Simplified Prediction Betting w/ Revenue Sharing via Crypto on: September 25, 2022, 06:43:20 AM
How does it work?
Prediction betting allows you to place bets on the outcome of real-world events. There are other prediction betting sites, but they are needlessly complex. As the name "HeadsTails" implies, every topic on the platform is a simple "yes" or "no" bet, and you are free to bet as much or as little as you like.
First reality is that majority of users would come from sports, not politics or science, or world events, so limiting your wager options to just yes or no in sport events, would not be attractive to most gamblers. Having multiple options does not make a website "complex" as you call it, it creates options for those who are unsure it team A would win Team B.

Focus of simplicity should be the site interactiveness, support for customers, claiming rewards.

HT has to resolve the question (select a winning answer) within 7 days of the question end date. The resolution source is transparent. If we don’t, users can unstake their tokens. This feature is built into the smart contract. This ensures that when users take part in a question, it will either result in the winnings to be distributed to the users or the funds can be claimed back by the users. HT cannot keep hold of the funds incase a question is not settled and winning answer not chosen.
Can you explain more on this?

1443  Other / Meta / Re: A blog for BitcoinTalk on: September 24, 2022, 11:05:34 AM
So my vote is for no blog.  If the Youtube channel is any indication of interest in extra-forum stuff, it'd be dead on arrival.
The Youtube channel as an indication might show some level of potential for off forum activity. It takes time to build traffic on a channel, and after about 4 or 5 videos, there was decent enough engagements. If that was consistent effort, it could be way more popular, within a year to 6 months.

A blog would not have the on forum interest that the Youtube project has, so engagements would not be replicated.

As I half expected, the members here are not really enthused by the idea.
If I do push on with it (cause I have a strong interest to write about what is written here Cheesy), it would be more of a pet project, and I will probably not announce it here. All feed-backs are appreciated.

1444  Other / Meta / Re: BSV subforum on: September 22, 2022, 12:35:49 PM
Would people be supportive of creating a sub-forum for investigating/exposing Craig Wright and his BSV scam for the protection of Bitcoin and Bitcoiners?
I also do not mind such a board being created, but I am not so sure about calling it a BSV subforum. The focus now is obviously on CSW, but it would not always be, and we cannot create a new board for every troll who takes it extreme.

Something like "Bitcoin protection" or "satoshi vision" sounds good.

But the question is, who'll be moderator of this board?
If theymos is in agreement, who to moderate the board should not be a worry, there are patrollers, staffs and global mods. Beginners and help does not have an active local mod, but it is still going fine [enough].
If new nominations are needed, o_e_l_e_ o or LoyceV are good options.

1445  Other / Meta / Re: A blog for BitcoinTalk on: September 22, 2022, 07:52:12 AM
It'd be a nice idea to have a emailed newsletter every month or so maybe, a Web based version could be a good addition too.
I have subscribed to some newsletters before, but never created my own list. I would explore that option, or maybe not, as the poll is not overwhelmingly in support of it.

BTW, You will need a whole separate blog just to Cover reputation sub-board dramas. A lot of Drama is already happening there.
WO is another thread. You will need another blog for WO.
Much of the drama would be uninteresting to a non forum user, some of which I hope to reach with this idea.

That'd be cool, but is there really an advantage of creating a separate blog, versus just creating a typical topic(probably on the Meta section)?
Users who are not on the forum can follow up on it.

Also, I just noticed that if I create a poll and set it to Only show the results after someone has voted, even I, the poll creator cannot see the results without voting. I am not sure if this is an SMF feature, but it would be best for the creator to be able to see results without contributing to the results.

1446  Other / Meta / A blog for BitcoinTalk on: September 21, 2022, 07:43:07 PM
I was reading the thread by Cyrus for TheBitcoinTalkShow[1] and got inspired about how other tools, like blogging, can be used to spread the word about Bitcoin, directly as seen here on bitcointalk.

Here is my question - Who would be interested in reading a weekly or biweekly blog (mini-series) about what goes on here on the forum?

As I imagine it, the blog would comprise notable posts within that week, summarized into a quick read. It would be presented in a fun way, with some featured series posts about certain members, as well as historical content for posts not as publicized as popular ones, like the BTC for pizza or Hodl thread.
On this blog, members who missed out on the forum for that week can have a quick resource to know what went down, without having to read through the entire forum, and with links to the highlighted posts there, for those who wish to read more about a particular story.

This can also help people who are not on the forum, or who find the forum layout off-putting to find out about what goes on here.

Expected Cons:
1. Compiling dozens of posts into a blog post could prove challenging and if not done well can exceed the attention span of most readers.
2. Majority of frequent forum users may not be interested.
3. How to include local languages in.

Hopeful suggestions:
1. What platform would be most appropriate to use.
2. What sort of content should be highlighted more.
3. Any idea on how this can work better.

This is just a spur of the moment idea, and I would not be surprised if some are not in favor of it. Whether or not I go ahead with it is dependent on the response to the poll.

1447  Economy / Reputation / Re: Total time logged in: 1 days, 14 minutes. on: September 21, 2022, 05:22:59 PM
I've learned so much about what crypto is, and what Bitcoin is, and I'm thankful for all the knew insight I have because of the short time I spent reading.

What have you guys learned since joining?
This forum is an actual goldmine of information. Since I discovered here, I have been hooked to it and the loads of information available. For the younger generation, writing ad reading here would need some getting used to, but when you settle in, you start to build good community habits and understand more how a forum works.

I have learnt a lot. School and work keep me away, but whenever I got some free time, I log in to learn some more and write a few of my thoughts.

He does deserve one but these awards usually are only granted posthumously.
That is incorrect. Nobel peace prizes are to the fact, only awarded to those who are alive[1]. AFAIK, only once has it been awarded posthumously.

1449  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What amount of fiat and/bitcoin would you consider safe holding in a bear market on: September 21, 2022, 05:08:58 PM
I'd recommend keeping 90% BTC and 10% FIAT. There is really nothing worse than FIAT, even gold and silver are better. FIAT is what makes bankers happy and people miserable.
Do you recommend this as a general rule for investors in bitcoin?
Someone who had 90% of their worth in bitcoin before the market recent crash from the ATH would have lost over 60% of the value in a year, which could lead to serious financial crisis, especially if it is for a pressing need. Fiat losses its value as well, but bitcoin is much more volatile.

I will recommend a more reserved amount of about 20-25% in bitcoin and an average of another 35-40% in other investments, and the rest in fiat.

1450  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Crypto wallets have a long way to go on: September 19, 2022, 08:38:28 AM
1. I believe that one of the main reasons why wallets get hacked is connecting wallet to a platform for way too long, some users even forget to disconnect the connection after.
It could be that people do not properly use crypto wallets to promote security.
I do not know anyone that would connect their physical wallet to anything at all, they would keep it safe and secured, regularly patting their pockets to ensure it is there. This is the same for bank accounts, people are very cynical with handling their finances linked to fiat, but with crypto, that sense of security is not replicated.

A solution is to use a wallet that gives you control of your keys, and use that wallet securely.

2. Not every crypto users are tech savvy and most don't even know how to keep their keys safe till date, writing recovery seed down or carving on a stainless steel or wood is still risky
Writing down your recovery seed phrase and keeping it in secure places, is a secure way to store it. No means of handling finances is risk free, but there are practices that would lessen the risk.

1451  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Merit] Hey Bitcoiners! Can You Send Encrypted Messages? on: September 17, 2022, 07:57:25 PM
Using ognasty's public key to encrypt this message means he'll be the only one that will be able to decrypt it right?
That is accurate. The objective of an encrypted message is to create one that no one else can read or decrypt except the receiver. You use the receivers' public key sent to you, to encrypt message, and they use the private key they own to decrypt it.

N.B, Private keys cannot be derived from pubic keys.

1452  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Q/A] Can Bitcoin And Eco-friendliness Go Together? on: September 17, 2022, 11:58:37 AM
"Will Bitcoin ever become environmentally friendly?"
Yes, it can, and is to an extent already.
Are there industries which are worse off in how environmentally unfriendly they are, and yet are not a subject of public criticism? Yes.

The above question shows bitcoin going green would not bring a lasting solution to the social criticism it gets. Going 100% green is a huge task for any industry and not usually set as a standard, but there is an exception here as bitcoin is not a conventional industry like many others, and with those, the government would take a sort of passive approach towards their environmental effects.

Bitcoin can and is going green, but I doubt it can ever go as green those who envy and wish to exert some sort of control on the network.

"Is bitcoin going to do anything about the Congressional proposal to ban Proof-of-Work algorithms?"
Devs cannot do anything, but the community can.
Announcing the efforts of miners to keeping the environment safe and reducing carbon emissions, would show mining activities is not as bad as it is reported to be. The major issue with this, is how most media houses prefer to report unsettling news about bitcoin, for more engagements.

1453  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hodlonaut Trial on: September 17, 2022, 10:37:52 AM
I really don't understand how uneducated a court could be. If they do not understand the technology then they need a team who understand it. People paying tax to waste money on those uneducated court people, why?
Situations like these are all too common. I can remember when the social media giants (facebook, instagram, whatsapp...) were on some sort of trial years back for misuse of public data information. Many of the questions asked were misinformed and not technical in line with the activities of those companies.
They court here could appoint an expert (court appointed expert), to assist in demystifying technical terms. Not aware why it was not opted for.

1454  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: We are all Hodlonaut on: September 16, 2022, 08:18:19 AM
In the war of words that is court cases, the judge should have cryptocurrency specialists brought around to testify the true nature of (technical) stuff in their rumors like sign message.
Seconded. Could have cleared up issues like this[1]:
Quote
This is what @hodlonaut's lawyer was trying to get across - unfortunately too technical for a courtroom setting.

Highlighted is a documented lie, still present today on Wright's blog. There is no way to pretend it isn't a lie, nor a way to claim it wasn't intentional. *image attached*

Quote
The 479f... string is provably a sha256 hash of two transactions we can see on the blockchain today.

This blog post claims (explicitly) that the 479f... string is a sha256 hash of a piece of Sartre text that is partially quoted.

It cannot be.

Court Proceedings have resumed with hearing witnesses and this particular one caught my eye:
Quote
Did you discuss alternatives to traditional banking? Yes, Wright pitched them a banking/payment system that would take out the middle-man and allow cheap transactions between banking institutions. Around 2008-09. Bank had a lot of interest, Swift can be expensive

*technical disruption*

Fixed, judge apologises. Helle repeats the question. The system "had this genesis block", would be alerted if something was changed. Can't explain it technically, something about "hashing of the block". Didn't need middle-man, very appealing to the bank
Bitcoin as: A system which appeals to banks and acts as a middle man between banking institutions.  Roll Eyes

1455  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The description of the Topic Starter (OP) Hidden on: September 15, 2022, 09:31:49 AM
Just to add a minor anecdote to this topic, there are certain circumstances where (OP) won’t be shown in a thread in this recent implementation on Bitcointalk.
Could it be in cases where The OP's account is deleted and the content is edited by an admin or mod? In an example[1], the OP shows as anonymous and the (OP) sign does not show up besides their post or any subsequest one.
In another case here[2], even though the account name is not changed, (OP) is not attached to the profile on threads they created.

Jenssen talks about his company. Says Bitcoin represents a "zero-to-one" innovation, no middle-man. Open system, free innovation. Bitcoin brought the missing piece of the open internet. Society beginning to see the consequences, but most things are ahead of us.
Day 4 has kick-started with video evidence as well as witnesses, first of which is Torbjørn Bull Jenssen, CEO of Arcane Crypto.
He gives his opinion that CSW is unlikely to be Satoshi:

Quote
"For me, it's very difficult to believe Craig is Satoshi". Would expect signing or moving, which while not a complete proof would strengthen the thesis considerably. White paper describes an open system, while Wright changed license, uses lawsuits, very unlike Satoshi.

It's hard to ignore the constant stream of manipulated docs, broken promises etc, says Jenssen. This perception is widely shared in the field. Very few think he's Satoshi. Cites Vitalik
Starting off to be another positive day for Hodlonaut, more like yesterday was. And there was a lot to show of the character of CSW in those videos[1] shown.

Here are a couple of Norwegian bitcoin users who are in attendance and will be tweeting some updates as the trial progresses:
https://nitter.it/kristiandoble/
https://nitter.it/bitnorbert
Mind editing this into the OP? It could save some a few minutes searching through the pages for where it was posted when they want to get back to it at a later time.

Judge asks Wright to help her understand why signing cryptographically is harder for him than what he's doing now.

Wright says it's harder to do because finding up to 100 people and getting them to witness is very time-consuming.
Hahahaha what? Note that question wasn't from one of Hodlonaut's lawyers - it was from the judge. Seems like she is also seeing through CSW's bullshit.
That is a very crap answer, shows little thought or regard for the audience, particularly the bitcoin audience.
Even with the benefit of the doubt, is getting 100 witnesses, less time consuming than multiple trials or less expensive than paying the bill of multiple lawyers.

1458  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Things to keep in mind before accumulation of Bitcoin on: September 12, 2022, 05:32:20 PM
One does not need most of all this information to get into and use bitcoin.
Knowledge of why bitcoin is valuable, how to DCA and store your assets on a safe non custodial wallet, with backups, is basics enough. A newbie does not need to monitor whale activities.

Exodus is best for beginner as they have 24 hour lives support and you can use it on phone and pc.
Electrum is a better option and has customer support communities[1].

Quite the interesting balance. As someone pointed out in the comment, the more the lawyers, the more wrong you are.
Facts are immutable, and CSW has none of them on his side here.

I agree that btc is good for long term but you cant ignore other projects that are also has good use case and potential. Its just that you need to be very careful cause some are really money scum bag only.
Sifting through to pick out good coins with potential out of a whole bunch is a huge task. There are thousands of altcoins with majority turning out not to be profitable in the long run.
Sticking to BTC is a safer option, to taking a gamble with altcoins. This is my personal opinion.

The comment above yours mentioned forms of diversification like real estate, gold, stocks, which are much preferable to altcoins if done right.
