1461  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TradeHill - Person to Person BTC Transfers Now Live! on: July 23, 2011, 04:25:38 PM
Can the law do anything about Tradehill facilitating P2P transfers? Seems like a difficult thing to outlaw, as compared to outlawing exchange trades, and might be a good way to keep exchanges running if public market trades are banned.
1462  Economy / Economics / Re: American Foreign Dept ceiling on: July 23, 2011, 04:58:17 AM
The "debt ceiling" is raised every time the Federal Government gets close to running into it. It has been raised something like 95 times over the past 80 years or something. It has NEVER not been raised. Not once.

One might ask, "so, what's the point?"  And the answer is... to pretend the Government is responsible.

This is how I visualize the Fed dealing with America re. the economy, the dollar, and the debt ceiling:

"If you don't let me stop you from driving your car into that wall, I will shoot you in the head. Let's take a right turn. Also remember you must drive faster and faster; keep accelerating or else the engine will die."
1463  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 56k as failover for broadband connection - 8GH/s - Too slow? on: July 23, 2011, 04:39:22 AM
56K dialup is sufficient, though I'd expect a slight increase in stales from the increased latency.

+1

56K would not be too slow, as its faster than no connection (and sufficient) in the event of a failure.

Failure of both connections is a non-issue. If we are talking about a failure of both phone lines and DSL/cables lines at the same time, sounds like a serious event such as a storm. In which case the power will be out anyway. So its moot.

1464  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Mention on Alex Jones Today & Mention of Bitcoin Forum URL on: July 23, 2011, 12:17:46 AM

So what you're saying is that he is a dink? Smiley

Well I do stand up for him on occasion, but I would not defend him against that accusation.  Wink

Oh come on, AJ is not a dink. He is just enthusiastic and realistic about the war he's fighting. We are up against some extremely ruthless people, playing nicey-nice is not going to go very far. Granted it's not the best way to draw people in, but its his nature, and he wouldn't be AJ if he didn't cut people off and go on thumping rants!

And Lemonginger, you're right that a BTC exchange will probably be blown out of the water long before a tiny BTC casino is...it wouldn't even surprise me if Dwolla got shut down along the way. What is cool about Bitcoin is that as long as people want to use it, they will find some other way of moving it around. It seems ready to become a chain reaction. Anyway, thanks for coming to my aid here... I'll tell ya this, the day we can take bets safely from the US, without giving up either our morals or our freedom, it'll be a great day.

For every Dwolla that is shut down, two more Bwitcoins will pop up.

Another Canadian newspaper article (online).

Skeptics of financial system push Bitcoin as alternative online currency.

Not very accurate, and some negative tones.

$16 trillion!
To give you an idea of how much 16 trillion is, I cant give you an idea of how much 16 trillion is.

Imagine a sugar cube, one cm on a side. It comes in a cubic box 10cm on a side, 1000 in a box.

Stack the boxes up in a cube, 10x10x10, or 100cm (1 meter) on a side, and you've got a million sugar cubes.

A cube 10 meters on a side and you've got a billion sugar cubes.

A cube 100 meters on a side and you've got a trillion sugar cubes.

A block 400 meters on a side and 100 meters high and you've got 16 trillion.

I believe you have just cornered the sugar market.

Any word on timezone? Would like to know exactly when "9PM" is, is the timezone adjusted after the user or does it simply use server time?
Also thanks for the max pass change.

Yes, we need a server time displayed prominently on the site.

so we agree then that your example was worthless? that it doesnt show proof of inherent resistance?

Cheesy. This wasn't my example. The resistance to antibiotics was offered as an example of evolution a few dozen posts back.

the mutation that gave it that resistance came first. that resistance is likely tied to a gene that has another function.

There's no evidence of that. I could just as easily hypothesize that the resistance was inherent. It is as valid a hypothesis as yours.

If the evidence doesn't fit, reject it. That's how the evolution train rolls.
1474  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Religion is a plague on: July 22, 2011, 05:46:42 AM

Because bacteria can reproduce in minutes, while for higher order species it takes years. This is obvious to anyone who has the slightest idea what the theory of evolution is all about. Clearly you don't know what evolution is or you are just trolling because you seem to ignore inconvenient facts that have been presented earlier.

I suggest you watch this video:

Foundational Falsehood of Creationism 9min

Do you seriously believe that I didn't know that bacteria reproduce in minutes, or are you just trolling?
Do you deny that bacteria, even very old strains, have some natural resistance to modern antibiotics?

Here: www.google.com This site links to many videos disputing evolution.

1475  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Religion is a plague on: July 22, 2011, 05:42:03 AM

and where do you think the subpopulations come from? previous mutations.

How far back do you want to go?

Q How does antibiotic resistance come about?

A This is a natural phenomenon and has been around as long as bacteria. Bacteria isolated from a glacier formed long before the discovery and use of antibiotics have been found to be resistant to some modern antibiotics. A certain level of inherent bacterial resistance to antibiotics must therefore be expected but surviving bacteria will be those that are of low sensitivity or are resistant.

PS: Please respond soon, I'm going to run out of styles.

What are you, 7 years old?
1477  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Religion is a plague on: July 22, 2011, 05:36:30 AM

Note the heavy use of the words "mutant," "mutated," and "developed" in that article. Thanks for proving our point.

You clearly didn't.

"A subpopulation of resistant bacteria often exists. "
1478  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Religion is a plague on: July 22, 2011, 05:32:48 AM
A small percentage of the staph are naturally resistant to any antibiotic,

any antibiotic? you believe this?

bullshit. you are going to have to back that one up.

there is no population of staph that is inherently resistant to ALL antibiotics. resistance comes from mutation and natural selection.

1479  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Religion is a plague on: July 22, 2011, 05:28:11 AM

So you accept Evolution finally? Because that is EXACTLY the mechanism. Genetic variation produces small portions of the population which will do better than the rest when exposed to negative environmental factors. Thank you, we're done here.

Evolution is a slow gradual process, taking billions of years. * **

*EXCEPT FOR STAPH BACTERIA.
** EXCEPT WHEN ITS NOT
1480  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Religion is a plague on: July 22, 2011, 05:20:25 AM

genetic mutation in staph bacteria allowed it to become resistant to the antibiotics we used to use to kill it.

how do you think new strains of antibiotic resistant bacteria occur? jesus?

A small percentage of the staph are naturally resistant to any antibiotic, especially in lower doses. Because doctors prescribed low doses of antibiotics, and/or patients often do not complete their full rounds of antibiotics, the resistant staph survive and thrive.

It really is that simple. No horseshit magic required.
