14781  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are bitcoins valuable? on: July 06, 2018, 03:02:09 AM
they have been saying that about bitcoin for as long as it existed. they don't even believe it themselves either, otherwise they wouldn't have stuck around this long buying bitcoin all the while. i recently went through my post history and found interesting stuff from back in 2014 which i posted here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4525450.msg41539055#msg41539055 look at the bottom part of that comment which are quotes from 2014, you can click them and see the whole topic. you can see nothing has changed between now (price @$6600+) and 2014 (price @$200-$300)
14782  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin future in India on: July 05, 2018, 03:50:47 AM
The future of Bitcoin in India - The Government of India has not accepted the crypto currency as valid currency. If government accept this currency then currency"s future will be bright.

it is true that when a government accepts bitcoin as a currency that helps build the future of it since it "paves the way" for adoption. but the opposite of it is not going to "cancel" the adoption! for example if a government bans bitcoin (which is the ultimate thing they can do whereas in India the bank is just causing some troubles) it will only slow down the adoption of bitcoin. and that's the beauty of a decentralized and censorship resistance currency.
14783  Economy / Speculation / Re: Underwater newbies - are you comforted by BTC's historical behaviour? on: July 05, 2018, 03:24:52 AM
under water? Cheesy
i was on cloud nine when i was a newbie back in 2014 as the price was dropping down from around $500 and reached $200 eventually. it is all a matter of perspective in my opinion. back then i would have given anything to have more fiat to dump and get bitcoin in return but naturally i only had a restricted amount of money to invest.
look where we are now. and i still would give anything to have more fiat to dump and get bitcoin in return so nothing has changed in my attitude either!

i took a little walk down memory lane after making this comment and it seems like the comments has not changed one bit in the past 4 years that i have been around.
there here is the classic doomsday reply to a silly topic i made back then (look at the date):
Bitcoin will fail, sell it all now
20 bucks or less.
I would say the main argument is that bitcoin is a psuedo currency that was pumped by a bunch kids speculating. I would say that is dead right.
We are going down, that's for sure, and I'm talking about <$50 down in the first months next year.

Sell now and buy back in when it's <$50.

You've been warned!

it is like dejavu Cheesy
14784  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Wallet Problem on: July 05, 2018, 03:08:56 AM
take a closer look at the words you are typing in that box, a mistake can mean an invalid seed. for example if you type in "advise" instead of "advice" it would be invalid.
you can see the list of 2048 words that Electrum uses here: https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/blob/master/lib/wordlist/english.txt
try verifying that you are typing the correct words using it.

~ importing back your wallet.dat ~

on a different note:
why do people call it "....dat" the wallet file for Electrum hadn't have an extension for a very long time. it is just a file without extension by default called "default_wallet" and if it were to have an extension it should have ".JSON" since it is a JSON file.
14785  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Most likely a Scam on: July 05, 2018, 02:58:17 AM
this is the 2018 version of the old Nigerian prince scam!
and the funny part is that they are using the lack of knowledge and understanding of the greedy newcomers about bitcoin to scam them.
14786  Economy / Speculation / Re: ETFs will take BTC to the moon! 🚀 on: July 05, 2018, 02:50:40 AM
true but all of these ETFs (for example Winklevoss twin's ETF from last year) have already bought bitcoin a long time ago and have it ready to go for their ETFs. they are not waiting for the approval of SEC to go buy it next! in other words no new money would come in if the ETF was approved and any possible rise would be some hype leading to the rise and this type of rise is never big. i'd say somewhere between 10% to 20% rise is possible but not moon!
14787  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Clipboard Hijacker Malware Monitors 2.3 Million Bitcoin Addresses on: July 05, 2018, 02:40:16 AM
i don't understand 1 thing though. why is it saying "monitors addresses"? does it have a database that matches the address you copy because that would be silly! the way these malware work is that they monitor your clipboard and when something enters it they just check to see whether it is a bitcoin address or not and it is very simple since the text has to be a valid base58 (and now Bech32) encoded string.

having a database for that is like having a database of 2.3 million numbers to check whether an input like 235513314955 is a number or not!
14788  Economy / Speculation / Re: Fundstrat’s Robert Slyumer: Bitcoin Must Rally Through $6,300 on: July 04, 2018, 04:39:28 AM
Nothing new from Fundstrat, just a another person with some new "wisdom" that BTC must do something just because he think like that, based on 15 day studies - imagine if he studied BTC for 30 days Cool

Regarding Tom Lee’s prediction, even if in this moment that 25k $ seems very elusive we should all remember that exactly a year ago price was only 2400 $, and by end of the year reached its peak at 20k $. I do not know can we see something like that this year, but if a new one pump happens, then it will be much easier to reach 25k $ then 20k $ last year.

Well Tom Lee's very bullish predictions seems to be off the mark since he started to open his mouth specially during the bearish trend and no amount of influence really swayed investors to pour their money plus their confidence in the market. For me, to be really safe, $10k will be a good gauge to see that. However, its around April or May that we see the price almost touch it, but then again it started to free fall again. Looks like though we have broken the $6300 mental barrier, but the question is, can it be sustained or just another bull trap in the making?

I have some feeling that in the days ahead we could test 7000$, but we can also go down close to 6000$-it is very hard to predict anything in such a tricky market. But it is interesting to see how price jump by 250-300$ just in a few minutes, so if we hold at 6700$ few days next jump can bring us to 7000$. But if we can see big pump like last year it will probably start at about the same time - it take only a month from November 2017 to December 2017 from 7000$ to 20 000$.

The only question is whether something encourage such a sequence of events again.

you are talking about a transaction, more like a complete U turn. and that takes a lot of time. first the bear market has to end and drops to stop. then we have to see some sort of in-between-period which will be the accumulation/uncertain phase while market makers buy bitcoin and everyone else gives up on it.  then we see a slow rise and finally the "big bang" to the moon.

the thing in 2017 from $7k to $20k didn't start there. it started from $200 in 2015 which was the accumulation phase and all the rest.... i am not saying it will happen the same way with same time frames but it should still be similar.
this time i suppose we can see the big rallies in 2019 but that doesn't mean no rise in 2018 either. we can see at least $10k before the year ends.
14789  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Skyrocket soon launches! Fasten your seatbelts! on: July 04, 2018, 04:32:10 AM
On the other, this might be the nail in the coffin for Bitcoin as a currency. If everyone's investing through ETFs, no one will be trading actual Bitcoins.

the keyword is "everyone" which is never going to happen. in fact majority of people want to hold what they buy (by hold i mean have in their possession not hodl and never sell) which means they will always buy bitcoin directly and move it to their wallets to have 100% full control.
using ETFs you would be using a third party and that's not bitcoin anymore.

Yeah that's right. I don't think a lot of people are trading btc to usd directly since most trade alts to btc so i don't think that'll be much of an issue for majority of traders. It probably will make btc's value a little less volatile.

you say "thats right" then make a contradictory statement?!!!
people ARE making traders with fiat meaning BTC to USD back which is why i said ETFs won't have the big effects people are anticipating from them. and trading altcoins with bitcoin has absolutely nothing to do with the discussion here.
14790  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Must know Technical terms in Bitcoin/Blockchain for Newbies on: July 04, 2018, 04:20:57 AM
most of these aren't important for a newbie to even know and some of them are even wrong.
1. why in the world made you think  the number 1 thing for a newbie to know is  a 51% attack with only 1 line of incomplete explanation?

Quote
3. Block Reward
When a miner mines a new block( adds the first transaction to a block) he is given a block reward. The reward give is halved every 210,000 blocks which happens every 4 years and currently the reward is 12.5 BTC
"adds the first transaction" is misleading the reward is claimed in a mandatory transaction which is always the first transaction called coinbase.
also it happens "approximately" every 4 years.

Quote
4. Confirmation
Successful hashing/processing a transaction and adding it to the blockchain
hashing doesn't concern the transaction. all the work goes into finding the block then when the block is found you include the transactions in it and that is called confirmation.
1 conf. means it is included in a block
more than 1 conf. means more blocks have been found and now your transaction is deeper in the blockchain and safer against double spend attacks.

Quote
5. Consensus
Consensus is achieved when all nodes of the network agree on the validity of a transaction, ensuring the ledgers of exact copies of each other.
consensus isn't just about validity of transactions. it is all the rules that make bitcoin, bitcoin.

Quote
8. Daap
it is dapps ... d-apps ... decentralized applications.

Quote
12. Fork
fork in different contexts means different things. for example when you copy the code of a project you are making a fork of that project. for example Electrum-ltc is a fork of Electrum.

Quote
18. Node
A copy of the blockchain ledger operated by a participant of the blockchain network
the "copy of the blockchain" is not node! the computer that holds that copy and is sharing blocks and transaction across the network is called a node or a full node.

Quote
24. Testnet
A alternative version of the main blockchain used by developers for testing purposes
it is best to call it "an alternative version of the main network" not just blockchain.
14791  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Thinking of switching to Electrum on: July 04, 2018, 03:58:44 AM
So I want to start using Electrum. Do I use it to access my Armory wallet or do I have to create a new wallet with Electrum and make a transaction from Armory to it?
even if you choose any other wallet it is always wiser to create a new wallet and then make a transaction to send your funds from the old wallet to the new one instead of importing the old one into the new one like importing your private keys.

Quote
Also, if I (for some reason) lost my wallet but know the password, could I retrieve it or would it be gone? I noticed the app creates a file that stores the wallet locally. So, if that file is gone forever does it mean my satoshis are gone forever too, or is there a way to get my satoshis back in case that file went missing?
Electrum is a Hierarchical Deterministic (HD) wallet which means it is using a master private key to generate all the keys in your wallet. this master key is shown to you in the form of a bunch of words known as "Seed". all you need to do for back up is to write down this Seed somewhere and keep it safe. later on if you wanted to recover your funds then you simply start Electrum and instead of creating a new wallet and generating a new Seed you give it your old Seed to recover from.
14792  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do businesses/vendors that accept crypto HODL or SELL? on: July 04, 2018, 03:53:40 AM
they are not accepting crypto/digital asset/.... they are accepting bitcoin as payment. and what they do with it depends on which business you are talking about. for example most of the big ones with a lot of liquidity (like Steam for instance) aren't even receiving bitcoin directly. they go through a payment processor like BitPay and they receive the fiat equivalent.

but those other merchants that are accepting bitcoin directly (like the coffee shop you mentioned or i knew of a food truck that has been accepting bitcoin) are not directly selling bitcoin. they keep it and maybe sell some portion of what they have received to cover some costs and get the profit but not all of it.

as for the problem obviously those big ones that receive the fiat through BitPay aren't worried about price. and others aren't worried about the price enough to want to do anything else. it is a risk they are willing to take and that risk has been rewarding them greatly so far.
14793  Economy / Economics / Re: CAN WE SAY THE MARKETCAP OF BITCOIN IS FALSE?? on: July 04, 2018, 03:34:15 AM
~
I know whales are not fools...but selling a huge part of what they hold is a way to manupulate the market. Causing more downfall. And with my little knowlege i believe that it will get a point when tether printing will bring fake marketcap. That was my reason for this topic. A friend of mine said that cryptocurrency was a joke. Sincerely i couldn't argue it. I just smirked.

then what do you think has been happening so far? and why did you just think about it now? do you think they are going to start now that we had a 70% drop?
what you need to know is that any manipulation also has its own power and will soon run out of. you can't manipulate the price from $20000 down to $1 there is  millions of other traders in the market too and they are also buying and selling bitcoin. at some point you reach a strong  resistance (which is most probably the $6000 that we saw tested 3 times and remain strong) that can not be broken so the reversal happens.

tether has nothing to do with market cap! 90% of the things you read about it online is pure bullshit created during the downtrend to create panic
14794  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Supreme court of India refuse to grant temporary stay against crypto ban on: July 04, 2018, 03:28:51 AM
this is why the localbitcoins trading volume for India has increased about 40% in the past 2 weeks. i think Indians have already proven that they are not going to give up bitcoin that easily. last year we have had similar news coming for some restrictions and stuff like that and they still continued buying bitcoin with high volumes and even higher prices than the rest of the market.
14795  Economy / Speculation / Re: If Bitcoin Up then all crypto is Up HOW ? on: July 04, 2018, 03:13:59 AM
But sometime if bitcoin goes  falling down some altcoins are uprise in the marketplace because of the demands of the market same situation from bitcoin if the demands high the price become huge.

it has nothing to do with "demands". it is all in the pump and dumps and how they work. sometimes some coin is still it is pump and dump period when bitcoin goes up or down so  that particular coin or coins will remain in their own trend. for example if they were being pumped they continue being pumped or if they were getting dumped hard they will go on falling.
14796  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Fees are low, use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs! on: July 03, 2018, 01:36:42 PM
And now that I'm thinking about it, what fee information would miners see/use?

that is a good question. and the answer is nobody knows. they don't run the same software sometimes, it usually is their own modification and they all have their own personal settings.
i have had my transaction skipped over because of seemingly having lower fee like this case of yours in the past but not so much recently.
14797  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Fees are low, use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs! on: July 03, 2018, 03:39:36 AM
Just to report, I made a 0.45 sat/byte transaction yesterday,

are you sure that you are not using blockchain.info (.com now) for checking your fee? because they have not yet implemented SegWit and if the transaction you made is the one that i am looking at you did actually pay 1 satoshi/vByte which is what matters. blockchain.info uses your raw tx size 2601 and then they divide the total fee by it 1232/2601=0.47
but the problem is they should divide your virtual size by it 1232/(4917/4) = 1.002
virtual tx size = weight (4917) /4

if i am correct then when you preview your tx in your Electrum you should see the fee as 1

14799  Economy / Speculation / Re: BitMEX’s Arthur Hayes Predicts Bitcoin At $50k By The End Of 2018! on: July 03, 2018, 03:12:20 AM
What is your opinion as per Hayes prediction,
i think people are getting too excited again about bitcoin so they are making exaggerated predictions again. $50k in 6 months is possible but don't think the chances of that happening are high enough to predict it.

Quote
owner of the largest crypto trading platform by volume,
the largest volume belongs to Binance and it has been like this for a while now.

Quote
the idea of reaching a value of 50k is not an exaggerated or impossible prediction.
of course reaching $50k is possible and it WILL happen but the WHEN is important. i'd say not in 6 months. but more like in a year.

Quote
"I think something that can go up to 20k in one year can have a correction down to about 6k. I think it definitely found a bottom … but with one positive regulatory decision away, to climb to 20k or even 50k by the end of the year."
i agree that it has reached bottom. we have enough evidence to support that $6k was the bottom but reaching the bottom doesn't mean price is going to just reverse and shoot back up. we can see a long accumulation and slow rise phase then a fast rise.
14800  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The " I told you so " people are working on my tits! on: July 03, 2018, 03:03:24 AM
no i don't get that but because i have been around for a while (4 years now... wow) i get the opposite of it meaning they tell me "You told us so ... but we didn't listen." i have been introducing people to bitcoin whenever they ask for it and they usually also ask about its price. so for example when i told them what bitcoin is and told the price is $700 and they just forgot about it and now see it is worth $6k+ they kick themselves.
of course i try explaining again what bitcoin is and try to make them understand that the price is not all they can get out of bitcoin. the decentralization and freedom of using your own money is the more important thing.
