14843  Economy / Speculation / Re: Solution to Bitcoin volatility: Require double checking orders before confirming on: February 18, 2013, 08:41:09 PM
I've been "goxed" enough times by my own haste to come to the conclusion that at least some portion of Bitcoin's volatility is due to Mt.Gox not requiring confirmation before placing orders.

Show of hands: How many times have you mis-entered an order only to realize your error moments after you see a dramatic change in your account balances? Instead of buying 200 BTC for $25, you buy 25BTC for $200 or in your haste you forget to change window panes and rather then selling 2000 BTC at $35 you place an order to buy 2000BTC at $35? (Okay, I'm not working in numbers that large, but you get the point) .

I'm seriously tempted to think that some of these crazy break out asks/bids sells might be due to simple human error. Lord knows how Gox freezes up in the most inopportune of moments. If Gox were to hold all orders until "released" I think some of these crazy up/down spikes would go away, and we would have a more stable, predictable, market.

lol no.

Gox does not show you the order your about to place and make you confirm? really??

I would be very very surprised if BTC/USD ratio gets under 20$ ever !

I would be very very surprised if BTC/USD ratio doesn't gets under 20$ ever...

.. and as they start to understand it scares them! they don't want to hear about why the dollars we all use are really just FAKE money, it scares them.

As it should. This is hell of a scary thing going on with bitcoin. It does take guts to take in all the information, take bitcoin to the logical conclusions and accept that there's a lot to be afraid of. Two other options is to deny its viability or to be blind to the dark side and be a blue-eyed ideologic as most here.

I might not think it's all roses, but there's no point denying the potential of BTC and would be stupid not to hop along for the ride.

yes i keep trying to tell them, "your stupid! just give me your money!"  but they don't listen...  Grin

+1 to this thread. Thank you for starting it. I believe one of the largest obstacles to major bitcoin adoption is helping the rest of the world "get it". There are so many people on this forum alone spreading disinformation and lies it's astounding; and the majority of us (myself included) do not yet fully understand bitcoin enough to rebuttal. The more we focus on why and how bitcoin is the answer, the more we learn ourselves and the more we pass that knowledge on to others.

people "get it" but they don't Believe it, last Sat Night i was playing poker, ( i was pretty drunk ... and high   Cheesy) anyway at one point someone asked "what is bitcoin?" and i told her, we talked about... Government! ...  Fake Dollars! ... Real Bitcoins! i had blurted out so much info so fast one of them lol'd at me and said " you going to sign us a song now" so i got up and starting signing "Mr. BITCOIN Bring me money, give me a chance out of this economy!" LMAO!

gr8 publicity right?

sure, but they will never buy in, because they don't believe and they never will.... they like their bank notes, they like their bank accounts. to them this is money, and just cuz some kid can cough out tons of "BS" about "Dollars" and thinks "bitcoin" is better, wont change their mind. nothing will!

Honestly I believe it scares them, they don't really understand it, they hear me say thing like " everyone fights over a VERY LIMITED SUPPLY, and that's what gives it value!"
and as they start to understand it scares them! they don't want to hear about why the dollars we all use are really just FAKE money, it scares them.

i think we'll retrace a good amount and then breach the all time high and not look back  Cool

i don't expect the down trend to be all that strong but it might last a few ... months  ? we'll have to wait and see to be sure

Let's assume for a second that the reddit news attracted more investors. How long do you think their money will be competing with the rest in the market and therefore drive up the price?

10 years to get the full effect  Tongue

"Some coin" means a lot of loot, but you don't say you have 12 coin in your pocket. I have BitcoinZZ because that's the pluralized version meaning more than one.

just loading a bit^^

the spread is crazy. its bot heaven these days. im kicking myself for not majoring in CS

Yo me too. Math skills are the most essential part of it (additional to what you usualy learn in CS). Its realy hard but I've put myself through 3 courses at coursera.org and started on edx.org... But I won't deploy one of these "high frequency" bots yet. Everything is possible if you can glue yourself to the screen, week for week. Still limited to python though. There are nice open sources to learn from.

the idea is to write a smart bot with code you can really feel confident about...
a lot easier said then done...

I write a program used to re-program embedded devices easily in a Visual or "Block oriented programing environment"
its makes it really simple to write complex programs given arbitrary inputs... i thought about retro fitting it to allow users to make Bitcoin Bots for any exchange with an API! ... but it would be a considerable amount of work...  time is BTC  Tongue

would be cool tho, a short 10 min video and anyone could have Their own bot running  Cheesy
14852  Economy / Speculation / Re: many bitcoin or many bitcoins on: February 15, 2013, 09:11:16 PM
i would of thought the polls would be different...

i really don't think i like "Bitcoins" because in fact their not more then 1 bitcoin.. what are you saying when you say i have 100 bitcoin!  your saying you have a part of the whole. so its incorrect to say i have 100 bitcoins!

it sounds bad too!

 Cheesy
14853  Economy / Speculation / many bitcoin or many bitcoins on: February 15, 2013, 07:14:48 PM
this is a serious question  Tongue
14854  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Sold my truck for bitcoins on: February 15, 2013, 07:10:48 PM
Ok, it is not all that spectacular since I am selling my truck to my mother but...

I told her that if she is going to buy it she has to pay me in bitcoins.

This is mainly to help her learn how to convert her dollars to bitcoins to help her get her feet wet.

Plus the usefulness of Bitcoin comes into play here. I will be out of the country with no access to a bank. She cannot send me a check. She would have to either go to my bank and deposit into my account or attempt some sort of wire transfer or come up with some other difficult way to pay me (or expensive using PayPal).

why how does your mom have bitcoin?
Are you making her buy the coins off mtgox and then she can buy your car with it
this is your MOM, why! why, would you do this to her Huh

I could care less if other people use Bitcoin. They will eventually, it is just a matter of when will the technology make it as simple as paypal to switch over. Until then, I am content in buying Bitcoin cheap while it still takes a bit of effort to get set up initially.

But I care about my family and want them to benefit as well. If I can show my mom how to get Bitcoin so that after that initial transaction she knows how to easily transfer money from her bank account, then she will be able to do so at her leisure from then on and enjoy the benefits that come along with it.

She used to not understand text messaging on her cell phone (she called it a "tex mex"). Now she is on her iPhone almost constantly.

if you want your family to benefit as well, give them a COIN or two... OR  buy their car with bitcoin!  don't make then spend their bitcoin  Tongue

I'd take her dollars and convert them to bitcoin myself if it was my mom...
