1502  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: April 14, 2015, 11:47:26 PM
So.. I moved my Spondoolies

I boot up 6, 3 come online
3 blink yellow twice. one of the 3 eventually came online.
The other two eventually move to blinking green. than eventually rapid blink between yellow and green.

No idea what they are doing? All I can find is that two yellow means IP found?

They are on a switch, on a 100ft cat5 cable. 3 came on. 4 tops. I can't possibly imagine I'm overloading the line.

Help please?

I think you might want to try some simple experiments to help isolate the problem.

1) Start with all miners powered OFF.
2) Turn on one, and wait at least for a minute to see how well it does. If it fails, you might want to consider a different port on the switch, or a different cable.
3) Once you have one working well, add one more and repeat.

I think eventually you'll find a pattern to what works and what doesn't. You might also find that you need to sequence the turn on of the SP20's though, there isn't  heavy Ethernet traffic.

You might also consider looking at the lights at the switch end to see if they are all the same. They won't tell you anything about legitimate IP setup, but they will tell you about about a dead port or cable.

Any chance your power cables didn't get reconnected correctly after the move?

I am assuming you had all 6 working at the same time prior to the move? What was their network connectivity and power setup prior to the move? What parts were added along the way? Static IP address in any of the miners?

You might want to double check and see if the 9V claim is still present on their website. I think they may well have realized that's it's a bogus claim and removed it. Too bad it still claims the S5 is "quiet"......

Considering the forum, an assumption of BITCOIN mining is quite reasonable.

My current summer plan is continue to dial back my SP20 to it's minimum viable power usage, and hence minimum heat production. It's current location is in the basement, but still within the total AC envelope for the house. I have never had this powerful a miner, and never downstairs like this. I'll have to see how it works out.
1506  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Newest Diff thread April 5 to April 18th on: April 14, 2015, 06:43:44 AM
If I am reading things correctly, it seems that the recent WestHash "BTC Rental Rush" is over. I think I just got my SP20 all rigged for it, and it seems that WestHash will only pay .0068 at the present time. I was kinda hoping I could see if I had it all rigged correctly, and then it fell below my .0100 threshold.

I guess the "Tron Pump" is over and we are into "Dump"? This seems to mesh with a return to BTC mining?
1507  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: April 14, 2015, 06:00:34 AM
Thanks for all the help and guidance. There are two basic keys to getting the 4.8.0 version of cgminer.

1) You need to set the "Extra Flag" to 2. This isn't real obvious, but kinda suggested.

2) The you need to REBOOT the SP20, not just restart the miner. This is crucial and completely non-obvious, at least to me.

After that you, you can start fiddling with all the other pool and "Extra Nonce" nonsense (pun intended).

Again, many thanks to those that have been down this road!!!
1508  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: I have $5,000 to buy equipment and almost free electricity. Where do I start? on: April 14, 2015, 05:44:44 AM
I too would suggest a stick miner as the starting point for learning about mining. It's so much faster than the CPU, or a GPU, that it will keep your interest a bit. It also lets you figure out what kind of speed delivers what kind of return. Stick miners are really cheap compared to a GPU, and draw little power and generate little heat compared to a GPU. You will not get rich, but you won't go broke spending $50-100 for the hardware to run a1-3 stick miners. Think of it as a learning investment, and then decide what kind of effort and risk you are willing take with Bitcoin mining.
1509  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [PPS 2% fee] NiceHash.com pool - higher profits than direct mining BTC! on: April 14, 2015, 05:28:22 AM
So for the SP20, in order to get cgminer 4.8, with the Spondoolies 2.6.14 software, you need to do:

1) Set the "Extra Flag" to 2 on the Settings page.

2) Reboot the SP20. Not just restart the miner, but actually reboot it.

Once that's all done (about 2 minutes), and you have started the miner again after the reboot, then on the main "SP20 Jackson" page, it will show cgminer 4.8.0 rather than the 4.7.0 version.

You should now be able to fiddle with the pool settings to actually add Westhash/Nicehash with the #xnsub and other stuff required. The cgminer 4.8.0 software seems to work just fine with Slush, I am now off to fiddle with the pools.

It's kind of a convoluted way to make cgminer 4.8.0 as the miner. It's also easy to forget the reboot, not just miner restart.
1510  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mining Requirements on: April 13, 2015, 10:32:29 PM
Huh I've been working with Bitcoin for a few months now and have yet to mine anything. I'm working on this for a client he had the system set up 2 antminers I think one is malfunctioning,
and I told him he has to hit a certain number to see some results as we have done everything from resets, to unplugging and re-inserting to re-starting. We still haven't seen anything even
when I saw that the antminer hit the number to receive a profit. It's hooked up to a Mac System and he is pool mining. any help would be appreciated.

The obvious question is are you using a pool, or trying to mine Solo? You need to make sure you've got everything working with a pool, and then try solo. Even then you might want to use CK's solo pool.

What kind of Antminer are you using? A U1? A U2? A U3? Virtually all of these USB attached miner will only mine a tiny fraction (e.g. 1/1000 or less) of a Bitcoin in a day using a pool. Solo mining, you may never mine anything.

Without a better description of your hardware, it's going to difficult/impossible to help you. Once you have figured out what you have, you might want to consider finding an appropriate thread under tha "Hardware" sub-forum.

In short if you were expecting "get rich" by mining, prepare to be sorely disappointed.

Unfortunately BTC price is down to $225 as I type this. So difficulty down, along with price. Sad
1512  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: April 13, 2015, 07:26:37 PM
The Postal guy just dropped off a box with an eBay SP20 from Florida -   Inside, the boards had shifted off their mounting rails to the point that the PCIe power plugs didn't line up, oops !  Took it apart and noticed several ASICs were loose.  Each heatsink is held to the board with a captive stud and spring, then locked into place with what appears to be a high-temperature hot-melt glue to hold everything into place, or in this case not holding it in place.  Any clue as to the correct glue used here ?  Hoping it's not too critical, looking for specs now.  Ugh. Huh

My understanding is that the glue was used to better secure the heatsinks during shipment. I don't think the the glue matters for normal operation of the SP20. Apparently it doesn't always hold, or maybe not on a 2nd/3rd shipment.
1513  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: April 13, 2015, 03:23:35 AM
So, I want to "cash in" on the current Westhash insanity. My limited understanding is that I need cgminer 4.8.0 in order get the "extra nonce" issue resolved on the SP20. I have installed the 2.6.14 software from Spondoolies, and I am happily hashing away on Slush.

How do I go about setting up cgminer 4.8.0 on my SP20, and can I just leave it place of 4.7.0 once I get there? Forgive me if this already answered in a different thread.
1514  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: New Bitmain Products? S4+ and S7? on: April 13, 2015, 03:13:40 AM
I really don't theink the S3++ had different chips, in terms of design, compared to the S3. They were no doubt better, and clearly the S3 got a rough start, but the chip design is virtually identical. Maybe somebody more in the know could comment, but the S3++ more like a "fixed S3", than a V8 version compared to the V6 version to use the car analogy. Once the S3++ was out, there were no more S3's available, except on the used market.
1515  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Newest Diff thread April 5 to April 18th on: April 13, 2015, 03:08:38 AM
OK, so lets assume that a new "Pump & Dump" happens on a AltCoin. Somebody has to get burned by that maneuver, don't they? If this is repeated, does this cast a pall on Bitcoin long term, or do folks manage to keep the various alt-coin debacles separate from Bitcoin??

While I am happy with a declining difficulty, if it puts Bitcoin in the crapper long term, it may not be all that great.
1516  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mining Requirements on: April 12, 2015, 09:39:13 PM
Actual CPU requirements are actually quite minimal. For $100 you buy a Raspberry Pi, a powered Hub, and a couple of Antminer U1's. The Raspberry Pi is nothing compared to your 64GB dedicated server in terms of CPU power, but paired with the ASIC's it will run rigs around the server in terms of Bitcoin mining, and do it for a fraction of the electricity required.
1517  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Watch out for FRAUD listing on ebay BFL MONARCH on: April 12, 2015, 09:34:30 PM
While I know folks rage about the high prices on Ebay, it's a very open system in terms of what folks are willing to pay. Separate from that is how you pay for your Ebay purchase. I know that Paypal fees are no fun, but sending Bitcoin is even more risky than sending actual cash to a PO box. At this stage in the life of Ebay, if someone won't take PayPal, I usually look at another listing. To me it's a huge REDflag, in addition to their feedback rating.
1518  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Got my ROI some days ago... on: April 12, 2015, 09:25:42 PM
You could always consider doing an R-box (100 GH, 110W), or even a down clocked S3. The point is that you could, and should IMHO, start with something way smaller than $5000 of mining hardware. You won't make much money, but it would be quite reasonable to fit within your environment and budget, to see the realities of mining. You could also take a big chunk of your $5000 and just buy Bitcoins. It's not fun or sexy to just buy/hold, but at less $250/coin, it's about as safe as anything Bitcoin related gets.

In case no one has mentioned this already:

Don't put more into Bitcoin and mining hardware than you are prepared to lose!
1519  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitcoin mining energy efficiency over time on: April 12, 2015, 03:46:07 AM
I believe that the only way to make a profit using a GPU to mine actual Bitcoins (not an alt-con converted to Bitcoin), is to have a "free" electricity. By free I mean somebody else is paying the bill. If I had free electricity, I could run an operating profit using a 333 MHz Block Erupter.

In the long run, Bitcoin would need something more efficient than a GPU to mine. What would it cost to process Bitcoin transactions using GPU's? It just wouldn't fly at scale, as fun as it might have been 3 years ago.
1520  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: 1TH Bitcoin miner on: April 12, 2015, 03:28:11 AM
Point of comparison:

Bitmain S5, shipped from stock (new): $340 + $45 in shipping. Paid with Bitcoin.

Same new S5 via DHgate is about $402 (shipped) if you use a Credit Card.
